The interviewer then said "Ok great, leave you contact information here with us and we will draft you into the army when time comes." I have never seen a man run away as fast as this one did...

My great grandfather was dragged out of the house and shot by Russians because he worked as a local judge during our brief period of independence.
My grandmother and her family were deported to Siberia in cattle vagons, her grandmother didn't make the journey, because of lack of food and water.
My other great grandfather fought in the Red Army against nazis, took a shrapnel in the right side, but afterwards was not acknowledged as a veteran, to avoid busting the myth of Russians fighting alone. Foreign troops were mostly put to the front, since they were "expendable".
My grandfather lost most of his brothers and sisters to starvation, because when the war ended some Russian soldiers refused to go home, but instead raided the countryside, and his family were forced to hide in the forest, instead of working the farm.
My other grandfather participated in the Olympic games for USSR, but now Russia acknowledges it as their win and does not even mention Latvia.
In almost all job interviews with Russian bosses or HR people for Latvian companies I have been asked to switch to Russian, to prove my language skills, even tho the job had nothing to do with language skills, and it is illegal by law to discriminate based on foreign language skills if the job does not require it, simply because it would be more convenient for the person doing the interview.
Almost every Russian person in Latvia assumes that we know their language, and many will get upset if you do not respond.
Sometimes I say on the street in Latvian to someone trying to start a conversation in Russian, that I do not understand Russian, simply because I do not want to talk. After that I have to listen as they loudly announce in Russian, that I should learn, or even that I am stupid or retarded.
Many Russians living in Latvia refuse to learn national language. The reasons they list are: it is difficult, I do not need it, it is nazism, that I am asked to converse in my non-native tongue in Latvia, and Latvian is the same as German, and Germans are nazis. So living in Latvia I am often forced to switch to Russian to get services or even pass non-state education courses.
Many Russians openly disregard our culture and history. Most notable is forcing us in workplaces to celebrate 9th of may (when they "liberated" us and mass deputations, native population culling, and russification begun).
I wouldn't say I hate Russians. There are may different people in such a big country and each person should be judged individually, but when they ask for special privileges or threaten, or commit violence based on a twisted version of history or sense of superiority it is disgusting.
What about Germans who did those atrocities? It’s not the reason to keep being hostile to the great grandchildren of those people, the war is over.. you are friends with Germans but you hate Russia, yiu are brainwashed, exactly because if people like you the wars are going on incl this war in Ukraine.. people who started it have your logic

Considering they're getting their orc arses handed to them in Ukraine, I'm not sure where this confidence comes from when people answer the USA, Poland, Georgia and the Baltics. It's also incredible (in a bad way) to witness a Russian confidently speaking about how Russia "never did anything" to the Baltics. It shows the complete lack of awareness of history and Russia's words and actions recently.
It's particularity of russian mentality and culture, where wishful thinking is more important then reality. When more confident average russian (except the russians with intellectual formation, so-called "inteligentsia") sounds in his affirmations, more doubt he has in what he is saying, reaching max.level of confidence when he is lying.

I am a citizen of a nato member and it never came to my attention that anybody is planning to attack russia. So how do russians explain russian troops invading ukraine?

Like to point out, that russian geography and demography make it next to impossible for russia to launch a successful military invasion into the United states. With all that land, they have one warm water port (next to ukraine incidentally). They couldn't supply that army if it landed on our coast. Russia's population is contracting (or on the verge of doing so) due to a low birth rate.

well I have to say as an American with Russian and Polish lineage I had the utmost respect for Russia. Even took Russian in high school but have become really disappointed in their attitude concerning the war. The younger people seem to advocate for peace but not the older generation.

I would like to clarify a little the position of many reasonable Russian people on the events taking place in the world.
We, the citizens of Russia, have nothing against the American people and we would like to be friends.
The problem is that the United States is captured by globalists who arrange color revolutions around the world and provoke such wars
(in America, you call them a swamp, which Trump tried to drain. The globalists staged pogroms inside your country in exactly the same way, during the elections, in order to destabilize the situation in the country and thereby discredit Trump, as they did in Ukraine when they overthrew the legitimate president in order to destabilize Russia).
And that's exactly what we hate, they are our enemies, not the US people themselves.
Many of us remember that during the Second World War, while American politicians were thinking who to help, Hitler or Stalin (moreover, many American businessmen at that very time supported Hitler with supplies), the American people privately collected donations to support the Soviet people, for which we are very grateful and respect Americans.

The problem is exactly that. First the Soviet regime, then the actual regime rewrites the history in the way that glorified them, and also present their oppressive administration in Warsaw Pact countries and in now independent ancient soviet republics like Baltic States, Ukraine, Moldova, etc... as liberators behavior, not occupant slaughtering, deportations and mass oppression of the rest of the population who survive theses atrocities, and then colonization bringing Russian people to these countries, in each of these now independent countries.
I have Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Polish and Czech friends who told to me about the deaths and missing people (great-fathers, great uncles, uncles, mostly men) of their each families because of these Russian occupation crimes, something most Russians don't know about.
It is the main reason why they think and believe that the USA obligated your countries to join NATO or call Polish, Baltic and Ukrainian people as "traitors". They can't understand and don't believe that you join NATO, not by obligation or because you love the USA, but mostly because your fear that your ancient torturers want to come back, and because you praise freedom.
Did you saw the recent documentary showing a Representative of the "Donetsk Republic" (what a joke!) in Ukrainian Donetsk Oblast, speaking about the new History school books that Russia is sending there to the opening of the new school year: "The children here will be able to learn the truth about history"!!!!! Seeing the Russian sputnik channel almost every day has showed me what "truth" means for the actual fascist and imperialist Russian regime!

Why so? Russians have placed just 150.000 soldiers in ukraine, of course the whole war will last very long with such a small force. Compare that to the Iraq war where the US and NATO outnumbered iraq with 1 million soldiers.

Iraq and Ukraine are very different theater of operation and the type of conflict was very different - Iraq at one point at the 5th Largest military and at the time had recent combat experience but after NATO repelled Iraq from Kuwait In the 90s it never really recovered from that beat down they received and when the United States invaded Iraq in the 2000s it obliterated the military and the conflict was reduced to a guerilla war / sectarian war.
Ukraine is a conventional war with them fighting a numerically superior force who isn't restricted on what they can target.
The invasion of Panama would be a more suitable comparison.
