I find hating on Peach in the movie for being a "cringy girl boss" ironic. For the past 15-20 years, Peach got so much scorn for being kidnapped and needing to be saved. But now she's hated for being self-reliant and capable. Also, "Japan, you're our last bastion of normality in this sea of subversive crap!" Does he know about anime or movies featuring self-reliant women? Japan in real life isn't how it's depicted in that James Bond movie 'You Only Live Twice'.
Yeah. Shad actually kinda pissed me off with that one. I mean, Japanese media is full to the brim with what American conservatives would call "girl bosses" and that trend goes back into the freaking Feudal era. Which is something he should definitely know. Plus, the scene they're pissed off about is barely 12 seconds out of a feature length film and, has good context. It's like they didn't even watch the movie. -_-
What they're forgetting: Peach was top-tier in Mario 2, she trolls Mario at the end of Mario 3, she sneaks power-ups to Mario in the Mario World Bowser fight, she has an espionage sequence in almost every Paper Mario, she's the team healer in Mario RPG, and she’s in most Smash games, where her umbrella is an OP save move. Peach has always been a badass. Shut up.
Not only that, but Peach was pretty flippin' proactive in the "Super Mario Adventures" serialized comic that that was printed in Nintendo Power back when "Super Mario World" was the Mario game on everyone's radar! I was 5 when that was a thing and as a result, I always saw Peach as proactive in some way.
Man, it'd be so unrealistic if a princess, in a time of war, ignored the direct command of the king and joined the armed forces anyway... Oh wait. Queen Elizabeth 2nd did that during ww2. Peach is in good company.
I guess it's a stylistic problem. Peach, while pulling off a lot of powerful stuff in many games, as was pointed out, always had a particular vibe about her. She never really exuded confidence, strength and power, she had more of a feminine elegant vibe about her. Her voice was soft and her moves floaty. The movie definitely strikes a different tone there.
I mean, it was full of references to 80s and 90s Mario canon too. I never expected Spike to show up. It was just pure fun for me, and I'm a 35 year old animation buff.
@@atomixfang Or maybe he liked it? You do know that seeing something else that you may like doesn't obviate the thing you do, right? You don't actually stop liking a Big Mac just because you have a "real" burger, and you're clearly circularly presuming that the Super Mario movie is the Big Mac in that analogy. We don't control nostalgia and we don't control joy. Be a snob if you like, but use that to promote new great experiences, not crap on the joy people already have.
30 years ago, there was a Nintendo Power comic in which Peach was portrayed as a total badass. February 1992, so I guess more than three full decades ago that Peach was popularly portrayed as a "badass girlboss."
In all sincerity, I think that whole spiel was a deliberate diversion from the actual issue, which is that M&Ms changed their mascots so news would have something to talk about other than American chocolate companies admitting in court that they use child slave labor in foreign countries and arguing we can't do anything about it because the Constitutional prohibition against slavery only applies in America, not in Africa. And Tucker played along with them because he's intensely stupid.
Interesting that Shadiversity ended up in here. He kept getting suggested by the algorithm to me for medieval nerd stuff. Tried him, couldn't put my finger on why I hated him. Now I get it. Great video, spot on analysis as always.
I used to watch his medieval and fantasy weapons content. Never used to rub me wrong back in the day, but that was years ago (and admittedly I was far less socially aware at the time). At some point TH-cam just stopped putting his vids into my feed and I lost track of the channel. If this is the kind of content he makes now, however, I certainty has no interest in picking him back up.
I used to watch him, but unsubbed when he defended the r@pe goblins in Goblin Slayer. Saying it was necessary to make them r@pists so they can be threatening.
It's a damn shame too, because I theoretically like his content fine when he's just talking about architectural features of castles and shit like that. But now I can't enjoy even that without it leaving a bad taste in my mouth.
"They don't know what things to hate until they're told to hate it" This is such a good point and I can think of another great example: Mad Max Furry Road. That movie is peak feminist! The bad guys are all representations of toxic male culture who use cars, guns, and violence as symbols, and who treat women as literal property that only serve as baby factories. The good guys are made up almost entirely of women who are trying to escape the men while establishing their right to control their own bodies. And I know Max is the one with his name on the title, but this is movie is all about Furiosa. But because that was all subtext, none of these reductionist pick up on that. It went right over their heads.
Actually, Mad Max did get a pretty big blowback for exactly that reason. But I find the Mad Max one very illustrative. These are people who will generally talk about how Woke Hollywood doesn't do R movies, doesn't do violent or bleak movies, etc. (And who will unironically adopt Immortan Joe's rhetoric and concepts, as they very often do with bad guys from progressive stories: See also Stormtroopers and the Empire). Here, though? Awesome fucking action movie. Time to scream because it's progressive. Because, see, what they actually hate is female agency and women.
Fury Road was not "subtext"; it was 72pt, bold-face. The thing is, they *tried* to cause a backlash against Fury Road. But because it was one of the best action movies of the last decade, it got very little traction and faded away into obscurity. Nobody wants to hear about their culture-war nonsense over a great movie. Your movie has to be exceptional to escape these nimrods. That's why they get the most traction on movies that are more mediocre or good-but-flawed.
He showed his darker side when the Captain Marvel movie came out. I stopped following him then. It seems he found he can make more money being the right wing grifter and has leaned into it.
The first cracks where showing when he picked apart The last Jedis fight Choreography while completely ignoring that none of the Star Wars fights made sense.
"Japan you're our last bastion of Normality." If you're counting on Japan to be the one uphold what you call normal then clearly you don't know Japan. 🤣🤣🤣
Japan doesn’t have culture wars mostly because the right-wing won their culture war - hence why Japan is extremely conservative (the LDP openly favors Republicans)
I was under the impression that anyone who actually played a Mario game, watched a cartoon, or read a comic would know that Peach is and always has been a freaking badass. Maybe not as strong as Bowser most of the time but able to hold her own at least. They even pointed out that the only reason Peach couldn't fight was because her kingdom was basically held hostage, a point brought up several times in discussions of the games
That's the thing, most of the people who get outraged know nothing about the history of what they are outraged over. It's like when they freaked out about She-Hulk breaking the fourth wall when the character had been breaking the fourth wall harder than almost any other character long before Deadpool was even a concept.
You are cherrypicking a handful of instances of her that could possibly be interpretted of her being a badass in a series of over 300 titles.. Nintendo has depicted has also depicted mario as a villain before so by your logic Mario should have been a villain in this movie.
@@Guy-cb1oh no, Mario COULD have been a villa8n in this movie, if your standards for what's allowed is what's already been. When it comes right down to it, they can make Peach a stone cold badass if they want, and they did, and it worked. So take your bullshit and walk the fuck away lol.
@Guy-cb1oh He's only been evil once, you freakin' idiot. And that was in his genesis stage, before he had a fully formed character. Meanwhile, Peach has been playable in several games after her debut, including Smash Bros. And even when she's not playable, she has her moments like in 3D Land and Odyssey.
@@Guy-cb1oh Ok, dumbass, let me list off any instances of Peach being more than a DiD. Super Mario Bros 2. Even if it is a Doki Doki Panic reskin, it established Peaches iconic float ability plus her stat distribution (slow, decent jump, decent strength) Super Mario Bros 3. Granting Mario strong powerups after him beating World each world up to World 6. a.k.a. a monarch funding her enforcer. Super Mario World: Assisted Mario in the fight against Bowser by throwing power ups in phase transitions. Super Mario RPG: During the Booster Episode effectively stalling the marriage attempt by crying and managing to dodge both Boosters and Bowsers attempts at kissing her. Playable Party Member afterwards with heals and strong status spells. Paper Mario 64 & TTYD: Snooping around the Big Bads hideout gathering information for Mario and delivering it via assistance. Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga: Foiling Cacklettas plan by installing a Birdo posing as her, also immediately realising the plan with Luigis dress-up as her and playing along. (i swear people only remember the stupid escort quest, when it comes to her role in this game) Mario & Luigi Partners in Time: Despite being surrounded by an army of aliens unknown to her, she takes the energy source of her vehicle and uses it to catch and seal off their leader plus shattering the source, effectively removing her from the board, before being blindsided by the younger sister. Also assists during the final boss fight. Mario & Luigi Bowsers Inside Story: In the beginning trying to solve the crisis brought by the big bad and basically telling Bowser to piss off, when he starts causing trouble again. Plus magically restricting him during the tutorial fight and after defeat throwing him out with one swing of her arm. Also managing to find her way among Bowsers Inside on her own. Super Paper Mario: Escaping Count Blecks castle almost completely (with a mysterious force helping with the last stretch), playable party member afterwards. Mario & Luigi Dream Team: At the end she shatters the artifact Bowser wanted to use to empower himself. Bowser still managed to do so, but points for trying. Super Mario 3D Land: Over the course of the game, Mario gets post cards detailing how Peach is escaping Bowser and avoiding his minions to the point Bowser has to recapture her personally and puts her cage next to his throne to keep a constant eye on her. Super Mario 3D World: Playable Character from the very start. Oh and lets not forget Super Princess Peach, where the roles were actively reversed. And that are only the games. In the Nintendo Power comics, she plays a role very similar to the film, being proactive to the point of jumping off of towers and kicking ass. Same goes for the Super Mario Bros. cartoon shows, where she is an active party member alongside the bros and Yoshi. "Cherrypicking a handful of instances", you say? I see a very consistent pattern that only grew stronger over the years. But sure, lets ignore that, cause you think "masculinity/femininity" is a substituite for personality....I swear it is always the same with conservative drag like you.....
My Daughters aged 3 & 4 absolutely loved this movie. Was the first movie they ever saw in a movie theater and they were beyond elated, wanting to go again. This and paw patrol are definitely their 10/10s. Appreciate your original review and this big picture.
I love this analysis about Cocaine Bear at the end! I've been trying to articulate this idea for a while now that reactionaries only can really be bothered to complain about woke stuff when it's told to them. I think it also pairs very nicely with how they miss the point of antifascist media like They Live, Starship Troopers, The Boys, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, etc. They don't actually care about art really at all, they just want something to complain about.
Oh, they want more than that, typically. They want to be rich, powerful, respected...you know, like that guy who never got over having no status after high school. They whine because no one is typically willing to give "their" due.
Yeah, it seems that they have trouble connecting with media on some fundamental level, because they're chronically incapable of seeing anything beyond the surface. The only thing that's real to them is what's staring them right in the face. Now, how does this make sense considering that conspiracy theories are their favorite pastime? I'm not sure. I think that they _sense_ on some level that there is a deeper world out there passing them by, but they can't grasp it so they invent one for themselves.
Not to mention that a lot of them are quite sympathetic towards authoritarian ideas and characters, even if they don't like to admit it. Hell, I remember having arguments during the first season of Discovery with people who genuinely thought Lorca was the greatest captain ever. And he was so clearly evil that his heel turn was barely even a surprise!
Actually, the missing the point of antifascism in Starship Troopers happened long before the rise of these quite recent youtube guys. When the movie came out in 1997 many liberal reviewers missed the point, missing the fact that the movie was a satire, and accused Paul Verhoeven of being pro-fascist (if you know anything about the guy, even in those days you’d know how utterly ridiculous it is accusing him of that). The US didn’t get the movie, Europe did. It was only over the years, and with it being pointed out to them, that these reviewers (and the American audience) at large started to understand that Starship Troopers was a great satire.
I admit I have felt weirdly vindicated in having my initial "Shadiversity seems like he's probably an insufferable fucking asshole in real life" from years ago being proven so, SO correct.
Good on you :). I never heard of him until this video, however the bookshelf perfectly framed in the shot and other decor kinda gave me a feeling instantly before he opened his mouth.
I was more surprised that Peach wasn't a playable character in New Super Mario Bros Wii and Wii U. it was more glaring that there were two Toad characters rather than just one. Having Peach be a bit character awaiting rescue is the weird and antiquated thing now. Activitely calling for Peach to be a damsel again is just dumb and shows a lack of imagination.
Thank God that Mario RPG didn't release today. After being rescued, she decides to join Mario's team as a playable character. They'd probably bitch and moan that's "woke" as well.
So I'll defend AI art on the consumer end here. Yes, artists are getting fucked by this and yes we need to find a way to stop AI from raiding the commons and turning public risk into private gain like tech almost always does under late-stage government-captured crony corporate capitalism. But as someone who got the chance to see some of my characters from my RPG come to life when right now I can't afford a commission.. it's awesome. And the upside is that I actually now *know* what I want from a commission, and could even send the artist examples so that it could actually *reduce* the time, while still getting me things I want because AI right now is still *mega limited* . (Two things it won't do: Make giant women very well, and do multiple-armed characters).
That intro, Bob. It's why I love ya. Also, you know what's another "woke" movie that the reactionaries could've dunked on? _Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves._ Every main character in that movie is or was involved in an interracial relationship (in terms of species and skin color), the men are inept and have no physical combat ability (except for the paladin who only joins the party temporarily), the women are competent, confident fighters, and the lead character, played by one of the prettiest, whitest Chrises ever in Chris Pine, has a mixed-race daughter. No explicitly queer characters though, but me and my friends are pretty sure the paladin's not straight. It's box office is disappointing, making it perfect fodder for the anti-woke mob to say "GO WOKE GET BROKE!" but I haven't heard a peep out of anything.
I'm surprised more of the basement dwellers aren't bricking their pants over the sorcerer character (who is black) being descended from Elmimster. Elminster is of course the Gandalf of Forgotten Realms and one of the most well known and popular characters in the lore of D&D.
My theory is that if they attacked the D&D movie it will discourage people in fandom from joining them. That or it wasn't penetrating the mainstream enough for them to be told to hate on it.
They kinda did. I saw some takes about "strong non-white warrior woman with idiot white bard sidekick". Don't know how big that was, but there were some of those.
The only bad part of this video was the beginning where you implied you were going to drink bud light to own the cons. NOBODY should put themselves through that, I don't care who's on the can.
18:36 Another big thing that proves his point is the entire decade of CW Arrowverse DC shows, which not only had gay characters on every show but went as far as to feature the first trans superhero played by an actual transperson on a show made for parents to watch with their kids and *crickets* because simply no one got any marching orders that this was a thing they needed to be mad at.
First, what a perfectly appropriate opening, Bob. Now, just to add something myself, about that stupid right-wing bit about Top Gun. "Top Gun: Maverick is 'anti-woke'"? Let us see what is in that movie: - The main character is _still_ experiencing severe PTSD, and everyone who knows him also knows that he is. - An ex of the main character is a literal girl boss (and a single mom too). - Said girl-boss ex has to school the main character on sailing, even calling out how he should know about it given that he is supposed to be in the Navy (cue Village People's "In the Navy" joke here). - Phoenix and Bob, enough said. - Hangman, the Maverick wannabe of the new generation, most often put in his place and by the original Maverick no less, who, to reiterate, changed and grew a whole lot in the 30+ years since the first Top Gun while still being recognizably Maverick. - Maverick agreeing to pull Rooster's Naval Academy application out of a secret request by Rooster's mother before she died - because after what happened with her husband, she was _genuinely_ concerned about the same happening to her son. - For the whole main plot, Maverick acknowledges that while skill will help, it is best to NOT engage against more advanced enemy fighter planes. Even in the end, with the final fight, not even his skill could save them (and it took a quite blatant deus ex machina to save them). All of those points, all of which are quite big details - and in a few cases, a major part of the plot, if not the actual plot itself - using their own...what can _very_ charitably be described as a definition of "woke," shows just how (again, by their own "definition") "woke" Top Gun: Maverick actually is. So yeah, like Bob said, the right-wing grifters really are f^^^ing stupid.
Woke us kind of like “fat” or “racist” or “greedy” in that most people using these terms tokens if there an agreed upon definition but where people draw the likes on what counts or not is actually wildly varied and controversial. Most people complaining about wokness don’t see themselves as people who have a problem with women or black people or gay people or even people with mental illness. They’re mostly convinced that there’s a nefarious and harmful push to “force” progressive ideas into media and so will get upset if there’s a black main character or woman just existing because to them, they’re not taking an issue with someone being black or a woman, they’re taking an issue with it feeling “forced”. Granted a decent chunk are just genuine Nazis or other variation of ugly ideologies trying to pull the bigger demographic towards accepting their views.
It's stupid because even they don't believe what they say. Was it not documented recently that Tucker Carlson himself did not subscribe to many of the opinions he was spouting on his show? As long as it's loud, angry and targeting the right sort of people for it's target audience, the arguments do not need to hold up to any scrutiny or even make any sense. As long as you can use that image of the woman screaming when trump was elected, a wojak meme or a picture of Brie Larson with glowing red eyes then it doesn't matter what is being said.
It's really important to bear in mind how shallow the reactionary mind is. For the reactionary, the mere fact that the film nods to the idea of martial valor as a good thing and valorizes a military tradition in the form of nostalgia for a Cold War property is enough. Any complexity goes out the window. The rightwing authoritarian doesn't care about anything but virtue signaling. That's why they don't care that Trump and other fascists are demonstrably grifters who don't believe any of their values. It's how the religious right could move from caring about family values in politicians to not in one election cycle. And it's why they have to fight this culture war. When the culture moves left enough that it's actually sufficiently unpopular for them to say this stuff out loud, *they stop* . Sometimes they even thank the left for doing it. They are fundamentally followers. *They don't have values. They have feelings* .
I’m pretty sure there were pieces/ reviews by ‘the woke’ attacking the movie for depicting a, as they see it, thinly veiled imperialist right wing ideological agenda against Iran and/ or North Korea, though.
25:16 - not only are the vast majority of these people not going to ever watch this video all the way through (or learn anything if they did), but the other good reason to (ostensibly, at least) explain this stuff to them is because, on the rare chance one of them DOES understand what's being said here, I think it's then more likely to trigger a cascade effect where they learn to stop being so easily manipulated and outraged by all this stuff in the first place.
That's literally why they will stop. It's important to bear in mind, as hard as it is to keep empathy for these people (and how much we should *never* let that empathy translate into excuses or into not defending and prioritizing the marginalized and vulnerable people who need solidarity the most): They are living under late-stage capitalism too. The world is shitty a lot of the time, it's not their fault that the world told them racist bullshit, and it's not their fault that racism and sexism and all these ideologies create artificial scarcity and make the people with power afraid that at any moment if they lose that power they will lose everything from the ravening hordes. Just like people on the left do not become that way because they were so galaxy brained that they saw through all social indoctrination and propaganda when they were five but because they had the right mix of good values, good friends, personality types that led them to caring about truth (at least in some contexts), etc., people on the right don't either. And so the people addicted to this stuff *need* the anger. My friend went down this rabbit hole when things went wrong in his life with his girlfriend and his daughter. Yes, he almost certainly crossed some lines, but I know he's fundamentally not a cruel or bad person. He's a victim of a lot of shit. But in that moment, he needed that anger. And it poisoned him. The people deepest in this rage network are addicts. Patience and love is important alongside stern resistane.
@@fredericchristie3472 Yeah, I don't give a rat's ass for ANY of those excuses. Your life being shitty is NEVER a good excuse for being a bullying asshole.
Jebus, so many solid points. That Marx Brothers song was in the 4 pack of movies that my family got when I was a kid. Much slower pace, but good witty comedy stands strong. They have to fight a princess taking action and the blonde, blue-eyed princess keeps her pink aesthetic throughout the film? They can't say she.... duck, I'm too riled for this
Thank you for this. Glad to know I wasn't the only one who noticed how fast the canned outrage sphere did a 180 on this film. Without even blinking or breaking stride. And you hit the nail on the head about how disingenuous that outrage honestly is from the start. How media illiterate and just...freaking dense these chuds really are when you get down to it. Oh, and glad you enjoyed the film and looking forward to your Evil Dead Rise and GotG3 reviews. :)
They’re grifting, so they don’t need any real media awareness, they just need to figure out how to virtue signal in the way that will get the best engagement
It’s sad we live in a climate where someone like Bob isn’t employed by the media because the media can no longer let Bob be Bob. Fantastic episode. Just Fantastic.
So, The Mario Movie is basically a good time where you can let loose your inner child with all the movie snackies they can carry and not have to worry about being an adult for a brief period? I think I know what I wanna to with that Regal Cinema gift card I got last Christmas.
Yeah that's an excellent description. The movie takes very few risks but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, and when the worst I can say about the movie is "I wish Charlie Day had been utilized more and/or better" you've got something worth seeing and sharing. Also Jack Black is the best Bowser has ever been, he and the writing staff nailed the best aspects of his character over the years into a perfect whole.
The vibes were vaguely unpleasant first time I clicked a vid of his, couldn't quite figure why but one moment of perusing the comment section made it clear, his audience was overflowing with reactionaries.
7:30 "Japan! You're our last bastion of normality in this sea of subversive crap" lol, does he not realize that Japan IS the main source of modern, strong female characters? There are so many anime with strong female characters in them it's hard to count, and if an anime has a main male character, they are usually looked over by the fandom for the female characters. Hell, if you take a look at some modern cartoons with strong female characters like Steven Universe, Owl House or Amphibia, you will notice that they have anime influences and references in them. Creators like Rebecca Sugar, Dana Terrace and Matt Braly have clearly watched anime before and used those influences to help build their animation projects, especially for those afformentioned strong, female characters.
@@shikatsu or Fat/Stay Night. Saber, AKA Arthur Pendragon is a woman but was known in history as a man to hide that she was a woman. The strongest knight, the King of Knights. He'd "love" that.
Not to mention they came up with Samus, one of the most iconic female video game characters and one of the very few female gaming protagonists still around.
I also want to point out that people got really anal over Chris Pratt being cast as Mario but then it turns out it was a) a deliberate choice for both Mario & Luigi to sound more like they did in the 90's cartoon and b) not that big of a deal since the movie worked just fine with them.
The most surprising thing in this video was that Cocaine Bear had more thematic depth that I gave it credit for! Well done, Bob! Excellent reaction and analysis of the Trash Goblins!
People also forget that the first Anchorman is progressive as hell. All of the male characters are mostly absolute idiots, and the female characters mostly have to put up the guys screwing everything up all the time. There’s a ton more to breakdown but Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy was very much ahead of its time.
Went into Mario hoping for a decent plot, sarisfying fan nods, respect for the source, Jack Black shenanigans and a wish for Pratt not to F his Mario up, and the film delivered on all fronts with chef's kisses. Not sure what anyone else wanted from a Mario movie.
This reminds me of a weird situation from 20-odd years ago when YU-GI-OH first came out. Around that time, Pokemon of all things was being accused by the religious right of being "satanic" and child-corrupting, not to mention the whole "it gives you seizures" thing, but Yu-Gi-Oh, despite being incredibly popular right away, was largely ignored by the right wing when it honestly should've been a slamdunk for the religious right to freak out about. After all, YuGiOh has all the following: - Summoning dark/demonic monsters to do a child's bidding. - The hero's favorite monster is a DARK MAGICIAN - The hero not only has occult powers but is *possessed* by a PAGAN GHOST. I could go on, but my point is that YuGiOh actually did do or represent a lot of the stuff that Pokemon and D&D and other stuff was blamed for, and yet YuGiOh was ignored because it somehow flew under the radar of the conservative issue-definers and went on to become so mainstream that you can still buy YuGiOh cards in wal-mart to this day long after the original series went off TV with nary a protest from conservatives despite it containing everything they ostensibly hate and fear. Because the conservative reactionary thought process is bullshit.
I think that's just a testament to how popular pokemon really is. Also probably the fact that pokemons "evolve" made it a prime target from religious groups.
Man, a pastor screaming about the evils of Yu-Gi-Oh! would have the same energy as Tucker Carlson explaining “bakunyuu” to his mosty 60 year old audience. A thing that actually happened.
Thank you, Bob, for your relentless service to actually rational (not the "I put Rational- in my screen name to look smart" kind) online discourse and the defence of fair and just social themes and topics. ✊
Well it was technically a word from black culture that white right-wingers/libertarians hijacked to mean anything liberal that makes them uncomfortable. Seriously Bill Maher uses the word more in one show than we use in a year.
10:05 That actually sounds like Hitchcock's definition of a perfect movie. To wit, the images work so well at telling the story, you could cut the sound and still be able to follow it. Not just for kids movies either...the action film The Replacement Killers had that same dynamic.
Great video Bob! Regarding the reviews, I really think most critics were expecting a Pixar or Shrek kind of movie, they all said they were disappointed by the "basic plot" and "shallow script"
So...because it didn't live up to THEIR expectations and were unable to adjust their brains to what it was, it was therefore BAD? That's a Simon Simple thought process I'd expect from the grifters.
@@johnathonhaney8291 completely agree with you, but as Bob said, there was some 15+ years of precedent for "smart kids movies", like Up or Toy Story 3. So it's understandable why they were expecting this for Mario
@@FranciscoAreasGuimaraes Sure, I get THAT part. But damn, if you call yourself a thinking critic, you need to be able to adjust when presented with new info.
To be fair, the Mario never had a deep story and I expected peach to be more active in this movie for the exact reasons Bob pointed out and the damsel in distress is like the most cliche trope in Hollywood. The last movie I remember with a damsel in distress was a Tarzan movie from a few years ago and it got absolutely roasted for it.
Pre-Mario Movie: Peach just sits there helplessly every time she's kidnapped, and is only a prize for the main character. That's sexist. Post-Mario Movie: Peach has an active role in the movie as a strong female supporting character constantly helping the main character out. That's sexist. People really need to make up their minds.
Three guys talking about "girl boss princess peach" in larp outfits from the nearest party store is perhaps the most cringey thing I've witnessed today. I can comfortably know that I'm living life well since I'm so far removed from that.
To be fair, Shadiversity is actually a medieval history channel, and not all his takes are atomically bad. It's just that, a lot of other people who like the neo-traditionalist aesthetic, he clearly has some reactionary tendencies, and if he's doing react content it comes out.
@@mabusestestament Which is sadder, the man who gets paid to be a creepy man-baby on cable news and talk about how sad he is that the green M&M isn't fuckable anymore, or the people who pay to watch him do it?

it irritates me when people say "oh the movie should have been more". i hate movies feel the need to be "deep", i wish more movies where just fun like this
I’m generally more traditionalist but I really appreciate the breakdown of the grift. The one thing I’d add is that you can really tell who truly believes this and whose really just in it for the money; hint most of them. By seeing how far they’re willing to go, ie complaining about feminism is miles safer than complaining about a mixed race character.
That's a good point. Feminism and LGBT representation are an "easy" target, but not many of them are willing to go all the way into full-blown white supremacy and authoritarianism (at least, not as openly).
Bob, your videos are always a genuine pleasure to watch and listen to. They’re always funny and edifying and I come away better than I started. Thank you.
Hasn't Peach been active in the narrative since THE 2ND GAME!?! I swear she as one of 4 useable characters, but maybe I'm just a gamer not a poser.....
Yes ! These people have probably never even touched a controller in their life... I doubt video games would be allowed in these christian fanatics' households.
I came into it with the same cynicism that i brought to both sonic movies and came away from it positivly, mostly for similar reasons. characters got personality, like peach being proactive and showing why she is in charge, luigi is who mario is trying to rescue, and mario needs to learn the ropes and fails the first time. What wasn't to like about taking blank empty digital homunculus and making them characters?
I am at like 6:30, so forgive me Bob covers this. Princess Peach has been kicking all the ass since Super Mario RPG released in the mid-90's. A active kingdom saver since Super Mario 2. And a staple combatant in Smash Bros since day 1.
Not technically day 1, as she didn't make her Smash Bros bebut until Melee. Although given the extent to which the GameCube sequel eclipsed the N64 original and remains relevant to this day, I can forgive the error.
"Gave her pants..." Oh you mean like Mario Kart has been doing off and on since forever. Especially when they introduced motorcycles. Gotta love it when people don't get references.
@@LupineShadowOmega: Especially when those pants are the exact same ones from Mario Kart because the scene in question follows directly after the chase sequence on Rainbow Road where she was riding a motorcycle just like in the game.
I mean, she’s literally the only other human being in the Mushroom Kingdom before Mario and Luigi stumble upon the world, where mostly everything wants to dine on her flesh, so how could she lay dormant and helpless for someone to come, when she has no actual reference of time for when that event happens? It would make more sense for her to know all of the nooks and crannies of the Mushroom Kingdom and the power ups/train to Bob and Weave all of the fatal nonsense it has, as well as be diplomatic with the Kongs and maybe any other lands of importance (Sarasaland maybe? 👀👀). My politics are honestly all over the place, but I absolutely have no problem with a stronger interpretation of Princess Peach.
I agree that there's a lot of wild stuff in the mushroom kingdom but it's really not that bad, now is it? The toads live cute, peaceful lives, something the movie points out explicitly. Peach lived a nice and secure life so why would she ever have to learn all those martial arts and who could even teach her?
@@Nusma AAAAND to strengthen diplomacy with those who do not see her true cause, such as with the Kongs, although she had some help later on with Mario when he joined the fray, but only because she trained him enough with her obstacle course level that she also used herself to be prepared for an invasion from Bowser, and she helped regained confidence for Mario when he fought Donkey Kong so that the Kongs could agree to fight alongside Peach, Mario, and Toad.
I just thought they didn't make vids about Cocaine Bear because it wasn't a Marvel/DC/Star Wars/video game adaptation movie so they didn't even know it existed 🤔
Ya know, I originally became a fan of yours (& Patreon) because I liked your movie reviews & nerd lore deep dives, but I have to say I’m proudest of you when you do these sorts of videos. Good work sir
Bob, love the parts where you dissect movies, the industry, insider information, all that part is top tier. But the adlib, the copious amounts of examples, the takedown of the examples. This is an excellent 10min video, that takes 26min to watch.
I saw a really stupid "Mario vs Broke Woke" webcomic the other day and, just...man, can these guys at least *pick a side.* Like I know the answer is "no" because they don't actually believe in anything, but I couldn't imagine needing a narrative to be so fluid and weightless just for the sake of pandering to a base.
Wow. Those nerds @7:30ish complaining we need Japan as our last bastion have some fucking nerve having some of those highly acclaimed fantasy books on their shelf with incredibly empowered female characters.
The problem with the internet. They gave a loadspeaker to idiot . He be back . Rip for fox , they losing fan base. No sane person would watch themn and crazy one won't watch themn because they not insane enought and are sell out
6:30 Every fiber of my being wants to believe that this woman is doing a Colbert. Her show is apparently even named "Wrongthink." Surely surely this is performance art, right? Please?
Even if you don't start with Mario, if you're a gamer, you WILL know about Princess Peach by sheer cultural osmosis and literal decades of games. Peach is probably the most recognized female characters next to Chun Li, and even gamers who don't play that much Nintendo (like me) would have picked up that she's a proactive, playable character who gets in on the action as well as the boys.
Is anyone really surprised at this? People complained about her scarf and bodysuit outfit in the trailer even though that one is *literally* taken straight out of Mario Kart Wii, one of the best selling Nintendo games ever. Join us next week as these same guys bitch and moan about how female characters doing anything in a dress is unrealistic.
The fun thing about this, when Jeremy from Freaks & Blamers got called out on that, he couldn`t let it stand and defended himself by repeating ad nauseum, how much he loves to play Mario Kart with friends. Mario Kart. Thats it. This sad pathetic excuse of a human being thinks he is a fan, cause he is playing one small part of the franchise.
+ Thank you for this. Been watching you for a long time and if my economics allowed it you would be on my very small pateron list. I hope you keep making great content long enough for me to show my appreciation with more than just words.
Thanks for reminding me how old I am by mentioning "Follow that Bird" which is a movie I loved and forgot about for 3 decades. Always appreciate your take. We don't always have the same taste but your reviews always tell me exactly what expectations to set and therefore best way to enjoy what I watch.
"Peach is confident and commamding and Mario is a bumbling doofus!" Uhm, yeah? She's a monarch and he's a plumber. I will say, I'd like to have seen her personality more in line with the game and less "Generic cartoon princess." Wherein she has sort of a delicate, feminine facade, which underlies a very tough, brave personality. Not because of any political bullshit, I just think it's more interesting. As is, Peach is just kind of boring in this movie. A character we've seen a billion times, doing things we've seen her do a billion times.
When I saw the trailers I’ll admit that I was worried that Peach would get to much screen time. But I wasn’t mad at how they made her cause in the games and comics she’s still able to take charge and still need help. I’m just glad that it turned out as good as it did
I suggest you make a video telling your ideal "plan" for future Nintendo adaptations. For example, what franchises do you believe Nintendo should adapt next, and in what form? Personally, I'm expecting spin-offs about Luigi's Mansion and DKC.
And even though that last is my favorite classic era James Bond movie, that was...**checking notes**...56 years ago. LOTS have changed there since.
Imagine if they saw Sailor Moon or Ghost in the Shell
The funny thing is, Nintendo is a Japanese company. For this movie to be made Nintendo had to greenlight this. A.K.A they're ok with this.
@@TheFabulousRBKOr pretty much majority of Studio Ghibili movies...
Shut up.
Also, Super Princess Peach exists. ‘Nuff said.
Super Mario Adventures - that's all you need to know to understand the source of this movie
The movie was 90 minutes of pure dopamine straight to my brain. I’m 41 years old and I was able to have fun with it.
You talk about it as if you had never seen an animation in your life. There is more to animation than DreamWorks and Pixar.
I mean, it was full of references to 80s and 90s Mario canon too. I never expected Spike to show up. It was just pure fun for me, and I'm a 35 year old animation buff.
I'm forty, and my reaction going into and coming out of this film was "...I've been waiting THIRTY YEARS for this."
@@atomixfang Or maybe he liked it? You do know that seeing something else that you may like doesn't obviate the thing you do, right?
I watched his videos for a while, but this kind of thing kept creeping into them so I stopped. Seems like he's gotten even worse about it since then.
I used to watch him, but unsubbed when he defended the r@pe goblins in Goblin Slayer. Saying it was necessary to make them r@pists so they can be threatening.

"They don't know what things to hate until they're told to hate it"
This is such a good point and I can think of another great example: Mad Max Furry Road.
"Furry Road" sounds like a very different movie than what I remember!
"Oh, what a day...what a lovely day!"

Assuming they're still alive and not crippled (though they'd blame THE VACCINE for the latter).

Even if it is a Doki Doki Panic reskin, it established Peaches iconic float ability plus her stat distribution (slow, decent jump, decent strength)
Super Mario Bros 3.
(i swear people only remember the stupid escort quest, when it comes to her role in this game)
Mario & Luigi Partners in Time: Despite being surrounded by an army of aliens unknown to her, she takes the energy source of her vehicle and uses it to catch and seal off their leader plus shattering the source, effectively removing her from the board, before being blindsided by the younger sister.
Another thing is in JRPGs if a princess is an important character in the story 9/10 times she’s also a party member.
In Super Mario RPG, she throws bombs.

I think that they _sense_ on some level that there is a deeper world out there passing them by, but they can't grasp it so they invent one for themselves.
yep, fucking exactly.
There's an Old Daily Show bit where Mic "Mankind" Foley shows how quickly Wrestlers and Politicians can flip the script when needed.

4:29 A counter quote from Pete Buttigieg seems to be in order: "When someone says 'trust no one', they're also saying 'trust me'."
Thank God that Mario RPG didn't release today. After being rescued, she decides to join Mario's team as a playable character.

Also, you know what's another "woke" movie that the reactionaries could've dunked on? _Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves._
Every main character in that movie is or was involved in an interracial relationship (in terms of species and skin color), the men are inept and have no physical combat ability (except for the paladin who only joins the party temporarily), the women are competent, confident fighters, and the lead character, played by one of the prettiest, whitest Chrises ever in Chris Pine, has a mixed-race daughter. First, what a perfectly appropriate opening, Bob.
Now, just to add something myself, about that stupid right-wing bit about Top Gun.
"Top Gun: Maverick is 'anti-woke'"? Let us see what is in that movie:
- The main character is _still_ experiencing severe PTSD, and everyone who knows him also knows that he is.
At least don’t steal children from their families

It's the definition of a fun time, and I don't think that's at all a bad thing.

That feels less fair to say. People complained about it after the trailers because the Mario bits in that were passable at best.
The most surprising thing in this video was that Cocaine Bear had more thematic depth that I gave it credit for! Well done, Bob! Excellent reaction and analysis of the Trash Goblins!

There’s a ton more to breakdown but Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy was very much ahead of its time.
Can't believe i got duped into thinking shad was a cool dude. Screw that guy.
After all, YuGiOh has all the following:
- Summoning dark/demonic monsters to do a child's bidding.
- The hero's favorite monster is a DARK MAGICIAN
- The hero not only has occult powers but is *possessed* by a PAGAN GHOST.
20-years... well, I feel old :-(
Man, a pastor screaming about the evils of Yu-Gi-Oh! would have the same energy as Tucker Carlson explaining “bakunyuu” to his mosty 60 year old audience. A thing that actually happened.

No, I noticed that too.
I definitely have. It's a useful word, despite attempts by the far-right to make it a catch-all term for bullshit culture war grievance.
Well it was technically a word from black culture that white right-wingers/libertarians hijacked to mean anything liberal that makes them uncomfortable. Seriously Bill Maher uses the word more in one show than we use in a year.

Nothing wrong with a damsel in distress trope. If done right.
Pre-Mario Movie: Peach just sits there helplessly every time she's kidnapped, and is only a prize for the main character. That's sexist.
Post-Mario Movie: Peach has an active role in the movie as a strong female supporting character constantly helping the main character out. That's sexist.

By seeing how far they’re willing to go, ie complaining about feminism is miles safer than complaining about a mixed race character.

I agree that there's a lot of wild stuff in the mushroom kingdom but it's really not that bad, now is it? The toads live cute, peaceful lives, something the movie points out explicitly.
