Here’s what I would do- evolve the story. Not go back to the mansion. But evolve from both status quo. Have the X-Men move to Mars. Then have the non-Apocalypse mutants vs the Apocalypse mutants as the main conflict. Proving that it’s not just humans vs mutants, but one group vs others. It’s always going to be Us vs Them. And in another turn of events, I would make the humans suffer without mutants in their world and actually MISS the mutants. For example, a threat that only the mutants can handle appears. They realize that human kind NEEDED to evolve in order to take on these kinds of threats.
And thats the thing. I think the reason why Krakoa was so popular was that it was the X-Men and the mutants as a whole finally moving forward. Now this era feels 2-3 steps back. Although I don't think we've seen the last of Krakoa.....
Not gonna lie it will be one of the best eras. Those who complain only see the thing the Xmen fans dreamt about but this time sustained. However the point is to show that even if you get the dream if your ego gets infront of it, you make your own nightmare. Look at The mutants became a little hypocritical towards the XMen's creed became the thing they hated the most the aggressor the pompous saviors and the segregation they fought against. While fighting to save the world even though it looks like it was to prop up their dominance even if that dominance may have been an illusion from the start.
founding a nation is messy, and they learned that real fast. Black widow even calls it out how they turned out to be like every other government in one of the crossovers when they won't take evacuee's
@@LohengrinX14 Namor told him. It’s one thing to play kingdom. It’s another to Play King. I’m paraphrasing however I knew the were in for more they could chew. But that’s what made it compelling. Like I truly believe the fear humans should have. Once everyone aligned. Yes you still had your fuck ish. Like sinister evil mutant cousins. But there was very much. But you ain’t gonna pull up and something . And none of marvel did!!!!! Sigh. It was a great time. Thank you X-Men and thank you Hickman
Who in the hell in their right mind expected or even wanted Krakoa to be free of problems??? The whole idea of it was to give the X-men a whole new set of problems instead of more of the same old thing along with a slew of new ways and characters with which to solve these problems that would make for greater adventures.
thank you. Inhumans have a nation and they still have interesting problems, wakanda has a nation and still has interesting problems. Mutants were finallying getting a voice in the galaxy, they could've moved the stories along that route.
@@TheLionsBane Genosha wasn't for all mutants. Krakoa was about mutants and for mutants. It was about a race facing all kind of aspects and surviving it.. far more beautiful
The main issue with the end of Krakoa is that most people mix 2 things : the in-world side of things and the meta side of things. Krakoa was full of flaws from the beginning, and that's what leads to interesting stories. On the "in world" side of things, something doesn't have to go because it's imperfect or, if it was the case, the U.S. needs to go too, it was never perfect in the first place. On the meta side of things, the Krakoan era brought new and interesting conflicts, and my biggest concern is that, what will come next will ignore the Krakoan era and go back to the good old treatment and conflicts. I love Gail Simone as an author and a person, but my experience of her writing leads me to believe that she will bring a lot of heart and fun to the stories (which is needed too), but she won't deal with concepts as high and deep as those we've seen in the last years. I fear that the mutants on Mars will become a footnote, a corner of the marvel universe rarely explored (if they'll even exist after all is said and done). I fear that at some point we will come back to the tired conflicting love triangle of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Wolverine. To make them a throuple was fresh and new, and it could have been a way to explore new themes and dynamics. Ultimately, my issue with the end of the Krakoan era is the same I have with mainstream comics in general, in that everytime authors take stories to new and unexplored places, at some point some editor, CEO or what not comes along and say "let's bring it back to the comfortable same old, same old status quo". And the stories never evolve, and the universe stagnates.
Yep, being flawed is what gave Krakoa such great storytelling potential. Marvel editorial is just lazy and they fumbled such a great opportunity. Krakoa still has so much story potential. 😢
I agree the CEO will push to regress any meaningful and interesting ideas authors who know they are doing have established. Like I’m pretty down the line there’s going to be another House of M event to decimate the currently increased mutant population because why not it’s a big and shocking shake up.
@@ParaplegicKeanuReeves Ooooohhh poor brain-dead patriot triggered by some words without understanding the context. I DO live in another country and my life is WAAAAAYYYYYY much better, thank you very much 😘
Krakoa era is the best era in X-Men it finally made Storm and Omega mutant. Plus, Synch is in the spotlight and recognized Apocalypse and his family as Black Egyptians.
Facts... we finally got to see the development of so many characters. We got new expansive story lines. I'm going to miss the sword comic and X-Men red. We losing sword for an x-men team in Louisiana? How can that not feel like a step back?
Krakoan era by far the worst X-men era by far. Storm was a much more prominent character when she was unquestionably the leader of Marvels main team for decades. Don't understand why anyone gives modern Marvel credit for a few token issues for Storm and ultra fascist Krakoan state.
A reader of X men or comics in general....we all know "the paradise" is never that and that will end eventually. The story people want would lead to the end of the comic....happily ever after and mutants no longer had problems
I mean, you could easily keep Krakoa in some form, but not for most of the X-teams. I don't think Krakoa was supposed to be a Utopia, but it was somewhat Utopian. And as a mutant, you were generally safer there than in the US, Russia, or the UK.
Mutants have been oppressed. There's no denying that. But so were the Americans from the British centuries ago. Krakoa would most likely repeat the mistakes from the US if it continues to be a nation.
The krakoa era brought the X-men back on top after a few years back X-men books Sucks trying to start a war with the inhumane sales was down I sure hope when the krakoa era ends that X-men sales don t drop to far
I just feel a certain way about Xmen returning back to this “specific” type of marginalized group trope when there’re so many historical examples of marginalized groups gaining and LIVING for centuries with their own independence and autonomy and community and their own space yet still have drama and conflict to inspire new and different Xmen stories from Haitian slaves, Jamaican lagoons, and etc but they keep going back to this “they gain-they’re-own-hopefully-space-and-place-for mutants-then-loose-it” trope
Krakoa was something new and it brought interest back to the X-men. The mutant circuit and the tech. The fact that Mutants were really making a major impact on the world and humans still found something to complain about and weren't grateful with the mutants drugs and Resurrection. Forge had a plan to end hunger and homelessness. It would've been interested in seeing how that would have played out. Krakoa had some issues like any other nation does and the fact that the quiet council planned to do better with new plans would've been great to see, too
Krakoa was never going to go the long term route, no place so far the mutants have used as a safe home for them all, end in death or worse. They have a planet now just peace out all ready.
Krakoa could’ve been the status quo for the next 20 years but I also can appreciate the slow build of the house cards and then tearing it all down to have a succinct era that you can see a natural arc and flow through it. People get way to hung up on HICKMAN as though he was some god figure for this era and conveniently ignore that this whole era launched with a half dozen titles and was always a communal effort. Would’ve been nice to see Hickman’s plans but if he stayed we wouldn’t have gotten stuff like Judgement Day and I think that’s honestly a fair trade.
I don't think Hickman was a god, nor was he perfect. He was easily by leaps and bounds the most talented writer and creative on the team at the time and since.
@@elbimio4u shoulda written an actual arc then I get how he writes and HoX/PoX is untouchable, but all he has to show for his time on main X-Men is very underwhelming Giant Sized issues and a few neat one offs that he abandoned and did nothin with. He chose to literally never use Moira, he could’ve stayed, he just didn’t want to do anything but what he wanted. So we’re left with a resoundingly mediocre 20 issues that don’t amount to anything because he chose to stop writing. And Ewing is Marvels best writer
@hobbes6392 I mean, he did write an arc. It's not his fault Marvel has one of the worst editorials in history. Also, it wasn't just him on this project, and a bunch of people had their hands in it, which would rightfully frustrate most. His Ground work on this X-Men run is the main reason we love it. And what do you mean not use Moira? He literally used her to bridge most of the X-Men alternate reality stories, making them all Canon in a non story breaking way. Love AL but no. It's definitely Hickman. There's a reason they gave him Spider-Man after what they've done to Peter and MJ in 616.
@@elbimio4u im talking exclusively about his 20 issue run. Moria doesn’t do squat there, and to be honest she’s the absolute least compelling Time Machine, sorry character, I’ve ever encountered but that’s my own opinion. As for Spidey, what I’m supposed to kiss the man’s feet cause he did the bare minimum spidey fans have been begging for for 30 years? He’s done 3 issues, the most interesting thing of note is a very cute gay old man couple. Come back to me in a year when there’s been an actually story. By then I image the spidey fans will have turned on him and curse his name, cause he’ll have introduced character drama between Pete and MJ which is unforgivable. Give it time, spidey fans are nothing if not hateful and spiteful. I adore Hickman’s stuff, I’m upset that a lot of the interesting political discourse he introduced kinda got left at the wayside but Krakoa was built by more hands than Hickman and every other hand was actually cultivating what was, while Jonnyboy ran for the hills as soon as those hands went “yeah but we don’t really want to go to space and be data mind planets”
There was a poignant scene in X-Men Forever where Xavier confessed to Synch that Krakoa was the exact opposite of his true dream, peaceful coexistence. As much as I loved the Krakoan Age, it did have to end. Isolation and segregation only worsens hate and distrust. That said, I will miss the f**k out of this glorious era.
Noooo we don’t want to see krakoa go!!!…. Even though it’s obvious it was becoming very effed up and we knew this would happen now for months….. but still my emotions say “Noooo we don’t want to see krakoa go!!!” lol
I don't think that most people actually care about Krakoa, specifically. Rather, its a fear of the reversion to the same kind of X-men stories that had been getting rinsed and retold for decades prior to House of X/Power of X. X-men stories had matured, progressed, took chances. And now we're basically right back where we were before Krakoa started.
There were people who thought Krakoa was perfect? Waaaaay back in House of X, when they put sabertooth in the ground, Nightcrawler looks back clearly wondering about the choice. That seemed pretty obvious to me, from just about the beginning that thi was a story about corruption. It is much like James Bone. His creator, Ian Fleming even said he was not supposed to be a good man, yet people complain about him being problematic. Yes. He is. That was the point from the word go.
I agree 100% with everything you said. I always expected the Krakoa era to end and ending for these reasons makes a lot of sense. It's not simply that humans won't let mutants live it's that the mutant leadership did not handle this situation well at all.
We always knew Krakoa wouldn't last, but I still think is soon and that it had a couple more stories to tell. Specially about IAs. For me one more year of a final event/saga before the fall would have made a difference. And why is it soon right now? Because Krakoa was just permeating out of the X fandom. Yeah, we the hard core fans followed since day 1, but it was something so big that it could have impacted the whole pop culture. "Krakoa era" is not just an island nation. It is the first time that the status quo of the mutants changed from discrimination to prosperity (not sustainable, I know, but still is a change). Magneto also said "what could people reach if they weren't fighting for their lives?". And another important thing is the editorial resource of the data pages. I know some people didn't like it, but I didn't see anything like that before. It's like the evolution of the narrator in old stories. Something off screen that contributed to the story in a natural way. People actually communicates through emails and text messages. Seeing something that is always there for us is a smart resource. But you are right, we gotta get over that, as we got over Disney's attempt of boicot against the X-Men in the 2010s before. Nothing new under the sun for the hated and feared.
I always thought that the Krakoa Era was like the novel Animal Farm. So, I see the points that you are making in this video and agree with them 100%. Plus, it sounded like the PIT was way worse than any prison the human society has.
I think you made a great argument for why the quiet council needed to end and less so for why a murant nation of Krakoa was narratively bad. The real issue to me is that returning to the status quo feels like such a massive step back and restart that it makes most X books look like a rehash. Prettyuch none of the team books look worth it to me. Storm, Pheonix, and maybe NYX were the only 3 I could see myself grabbing.
So we gotta go back to the endless status quo of Mutantkind being hunted, hounded, and on the brink of extinction? That gets tiresome. Why can't they do something different for once?
That's not the only problem. They're literally gonna put them right back in the mansion😂 Imagine actively owning an island leading a country and then go and back to a mansion like well, this is a good idea.😅
@@brandonfitzgerald-eo3tk Yeah, makes no sense. They were the richest nation on earth and they just... didn't save a dime? No offshore accounts? Gold bullion? They should be able to buy somewhere better for them to go
I loved the krakoan era, it was a fever dream as a queer person and x-men fan to have virtually all the mutants having a literal safe space seldom asailable by wicked humans and so many characters i love being relavant again like omega red, toad, gorgon, selene, destiny, and especially sinister getting so much love. Good apocalypse was incredible, i loved arrako and queen storm. I didnt want krakoa to end but it definitley went off the rails in the past year or so. Im not surprised its ending and it lasted longer than i thought. I hope alot of the things it introduced carry over line a return to good beasr and previouslt villainous mutants new lives like omega red and nekra. I just dont want it to go back to the same status qo it left off at that mess of the early 2010s with dead wolverine, terrigen mist, and the axis event
Krakoa was fine, the struggle to get accepted as a nation for real was needed this ending should have been it, the next step for Krakoa is actually functioning on a level playing field and still trying to help and save mutants all over the world who will still be hunted down. Krakoa was nice but eventually reality would sneak in an economy would have to be addressed and mutants who think their better than other mutants would still be an issue. There is still a lot of hate among each other that could be explored being manipulated or funded from people still trying to harm mutants.
It's hard to know to what extent Magneto's "New Gods" comment reflected his thoughts. If you send Magneto & Apocalypse to a meeting (where you're expecting an assassination attempt), you're hoping to remind those who are threatening you to think twice before attacking. For the Magneto deterrent to work, people have to believe Krakoa is willing to let Magneto go all Silver Age on their butts. In the round, Krakoa was probably no worse than most nations. If we judge them harshly, we should probably extend that judgement to similar (and worse) real-world nations & governments. I'm guessing, that's part of the point.
Krakoa has been the best era of X in a long time and really put my mutant fam back on the charts. It’s sad it has to go but I agree on every point you made. I just wish Krakoa could’ve last at least a year or two more to finish fleshing out some more of those stories instead of rushing everything. However I understand.
The Krakoa era was amazing. As a long time fan this era of X-Men this era was something I really needed and a main reason I jumped back into comics. I always felt everything before was just too cartoony and try to be too based of the movies (even tho it was great plan being played) . After Clarmont era everything was kinda meh. Every single xmen book, x-related issue from the start of the 2019 always left thinking " like damn this went down in spider man, FF, avengers or ghost rider etc I wonder how this affects Krakoa?" everything mattered to what was going on that island to the how they was trying to help the humans, finding there footing amongst themselves. If you read my previous comments I always preach diversity and I gonna miss they can just come up with a new title and literally press random select and get 5-10 people we ain't never heard of I think that's going to be very missed going forward. I hope this gets revisited like the age of Apocalypse time line cause there still some good food left on the table. I do feel there is a lot stuff they wasted that could have more light on. You mean to tell me in both Nightcrawler's titles not one person came out from the waiting room? Outside of X-force I felt they shoulda had another black Ops team title like X-men Black (or what the Hellions shoulda been doing) where they was just retrieving the dead mutants bodies to bring back for res protocols. X-Corp shoulda had another title with them flipping the mysterium and more on the space trade and the backlash after Orchis put fentanyl in the Krakoain meds and they gave us the Deviant breadcrumbs during A.X.E. event no follow up on that but aye long live the Krokan era!!
Krakoa Era got me back into it heavy again... I never stopped paying attention to what happened to the X-Men... But the era had me plugged full time again... I think they can move up ahead with a nice natural progression.
My only problem with the end of Krakoa is that it really feels like Marvel is preparing to take the mutants twenty steps back. Like it’s obvious Krakoa couldn’t last forever and that whenever we got a new era it was going to change things, but that change is really just going back to what they were doing for the last thirty years so it makes it pointless in keeping up with the mutants/X-Men if we can only get the same three stories out of them.
The Krakoa Era was fine. The comments are reasonable. Does it have to end? Not really. Yes, Krakoa era has many problems and isn't as idealistic as they claim to be. Are the mutants arrogant, no more than any other group of people? Are the non-mutants arrogant? Are the Shiar, Kree, Atlanteans, Inhumans, Eternals... arrogant? Marvels tackled the issue of equality as in the Fantastic Four run discovering how they received the boost of their Cosmic power from the race that banished its failed superhero's turning into nonhuman appearance. We've seen the Inhuman's treatment of the Alpha's. The mutant community could easily depart Earth and form its settlement on another planet, Universe, other Otherworld or Dimension but many choose not to relocate for a host of individual reasons of family, friends, community, way of life. Some could pioneer relocation elsewhere and relocating at their own time of choosing and where but that's an individual's decision. Mutants are so accustomed that all their problems are human initiated, yet they've always known that some of their greatest adversaries were other mutants who had goals of power, greed and accumulation of material, which are some of the same reasons of human actions on humans. Why would mutants be immune to their own vices and weaknesses?
I will also say that, fallen Angels excluded, the stuff they did with Kwannon was really good. To the point that Excalibur’s issues where the two were interacting were some of my favourites. Also, Saturnyne is now one of my favourite antagonists. Mostly because she’s so powerful, is such a Dynasty level soap opera and her thirst for Brian made me laugh. Especially when the Betsy Mosaic happened.
I just loved the Krakoa Era and it was nice for them to have some time just not getting to shit on 24/7 and getting to see some of the mutants being happy. even if they did not have perfect lives I think it was nice to see some happy moments. but all good things must end to keep the story going. I also loved Wolverine and the X-Men with head master Logan. I know they were not the same but I got the same feeling from both runs.
You're completely right about Krakoa. It shows the flaws of this kind of system but also this was one of my favourite eras of X-writing. I kinda wanna see them progress with different issues having Krakoa being the norm and solving the foundation of that society, kinda like how IRL nations have to.
Who ever thought the Krakoa era would not be problematic? As an avid comic book reader and collector with over 40 yrs of consistent reading and collecting, I automatically expect and want the problems too arise. What fun would it be if there were not? Krakoa offered a wealth of new storytelling Let's keep it one hundred percent; After Hickman left the writers fumbled the bag. I can sit and rattle out a hundred different dope ass stories off top. No nation is perfect and without problems lol I've been into this stuff long enough to recognize BS, and Marvel is on BS. This has nothing too do with Krakoa lacking any good storytelling potential. This has everything too do with the films and the anticipation of the X-men coming to the McU along with the upcoming Deadpool featuring Logan. They always do these ridiculous resets when these idiotic films come in the books and it's become somewhat of a curse for lifetime collectors like myself because they disregard any Canon progress in the books. They're so slow that it never occurred too them to create a line of books that coincide or are more familiar to the films for new readers that are here because of the films. You're silly too feel that any problems that you mentioned are non problems lol They dreamed up the problems and I'm sure they have or can dream up the solutions. I could right here and now. You're reasoning for saying Krakoa is simply a weak argument as well as your opinion, and I respect your opinion. This is mine. If these curremt writers cannot write stories that resolve issues and problems that arose during this most excellent era then they suck more than they've already shown how "suck" they truly are.
The most painful part is how much potential there was with Krakoa. Like you said, there are so many stories to be told from it all. Krakoa deserved more time but I don't blame the writers. Immortal X-Men & X-Men Red were some of the best stories imo. But with Fall of X feeling so rushed the stories became redundant and disjointed.
My issue is clear, They are saying it happened but we are not keeping any of the ideas. So far they want to go back to the 90s for cartoon synergy and idealistic getting that Jim lee/Claremont lightning in a bottle. But I as a Krakoa reader hate the notion that nothing is going to stick, no Krakoaesque tech or looks, no diverse teaming so far namely on the main team, something i heavily worry when i heard the rumors Gail was writting, since she barely touches any melanin in characters. Krakoa had to end but now almost anything aesthetic positive in this era is gone. I do feel that Krakoa did plummet after Hickman left, everything was trying to wrap up and i feel bad his vision didn't come to fruition and Gerry...he's now persona non grata. Now this new era looks like an abomination at least to me. Visualy, and so far none of the core teams really sound interesting and borderline just dumb. I do hope to be proven wrong but this looks like the IVX era beat for beat. I'm happy it happened and hope someone on AO3 makes a better sequence post inferno.
I’ve been out of comics for a minute, mostly following channels like yours for cliff notes. I’m looking forward to reading the whole Krakoa run and hope it has a great ending. I agree it has to end bc all X-Men runs have their endings to give way to something new
Krakoa was bound to end at some point I think that was pretty evident with what they set up day one. But what it’s replaced with should go forward, not backwards.
You reinforced why Krakoa should continue. Problematic is real and closer to reality. Storylines that were never explored but let’s go back to era of Mutants be hunted and exterminated that never been done before
My first hint that something was wrong was when Nightcrawler suggested that the third law of Krakoa be "Make More Mutants". What does that even mean? Does that illegalize abortion? But only if the baby is a mutant? Is contraception illegal? What about being gay? Is virginity a crime now? And then the Quiet Council just adopted the law with no further questions. That's when Krakoa's national banner started looking like one big red flag.
Krakoa is one of the best eras for the mutants with a dope status quo. None of your points really justify why krakoa as a whole should end but instead problems to be fixed. Every country has its failings
I completely disagree with the "if people made wise decisions, there's a boring story" take. To the contrary, a story is elevated when everyone makes sensible, smart decisions. Conflicts can arise between two smart people man, how's that not obvious? Yes, there can be rash, dumb decisions made by characters too, but they should have a better explanations than "so that the story progresses" , that is writing 101.
Might be why Ayala’s run on New Mutants was so good; because it had a lot of the characters go “wow, this is a mess. Let’s actually try and sort out the problems.”
Even with all its flaws, Krakoa was the best Mutants ever had to date. The regression, knowing what was lost, what could've been, is just tiresome as much as heart-breaking, to me. It was a paradigm shift that simply can't be forgotten. Krakoa should be the dream of every ethical Mutant who desires sanctuary from persecution.
I loved the Krakoa era, but I recognized from the beginning that it wasn’t permanent. I’m ok with that. Why? Because I could tell by the way it was written that it wasn’t built to last. At least not in the way it existed. I don’t know what to say to people who can’t move on. But what I hope is that lessons learned carry over. That’s my biggest thing. Let it serve the grand narrative well.
Nothing lasts forever and really from a writing perspective when Hickman left Krakoa had to go. And I agree you can’t have a ‘perfect’ story it’s like the old argument of why didn’t uses the Eagles in LOTR…because then there would be no story to tell or my preferred answer to the question that Tolkien gave: “….Shut up!”
There was a simple reason, Eagles were huge, intelligent, and powerful. Things that make the ring want to corrupt even quicker, hence why the Hobbits were picked. They were small, simple, happy in their bubble, and wanted nothing except home, which is why Bilbo and Frodo were perfect for it. That's what a good story does, it can even close "plotholes" without you trying if you just elaborate on the world and characters enough. Just ending things to restart it again because "nothing lasts forever" is such a lazy reason, and it's been done oh so many dang times.
@@YourSuperman35 and yet Tolkien himself has said when asked why the Eagles were not used that it would make the story too simple. Per his own words he likened the proposed shortening of the Fellowship's journey via Eagles to "introducing helicopters" to the first ascent of Mt. Everest "to take the climbers halfway up (in defiance of probability)", and said that this would make "a farce" out of "the arduous journey". He wrote that this "achieves nothing but incredibility", and that it makes stale "the device of the Eagles when at last they are really needed". But it’s not just ending, the end of Krakoa is an ending that had been planned and foreshadowed for more than a year now with some plot points being put into non X-Men titles so in fairness I wouldn’t call this lazy at all, the “everything ends” comment relates to not getting attached to the status quo
@@Wezt334 I know it was part of an interview, but if you keep getting asked about it over an over again, you tend to resort to a simpler phrase instead of trying to explain the lore and detailed description of everything to every person that asks. I mean, look at George RR Martin. He's so sick of people asking him when his books will be done, he's taking that approach to the answers too. So yeah, they themselves may have said a thing, doesn't mean it's the definite answer from here on, it means they are tired or talking about it. As for Krakoa, it was foreshadowed things were about to pop off, not the ending of Krakoa. They could literally try to resolve this conflict, sacrifice a few people, then have Magneto take over Krakoa with new laws and rules, because this should be a nation they shouldn't give up on but learn from their mistakes and hubris. Or just reset everything, that's fine. Maybe they should've done that in Lord of The Rings right, it was written that Sauron wanted the ring and wanted to take over all of Middle Earth, so why should they have a happy ending and have a perfect land. Nothing good lasts forever right? Yeah, that would've been a Great final book to read...
@@YourSuperman35 hey if you need to make it so the authors words can be ignored to suit your narrative cool, personally I don’t subscribe to that. No it had been foreshadowed to end sir, it was why things ramped up the way they did, if you are unhappy with that then cool that’s your opinion but this is comics no change to the status quo lasts forever take Utopia for example you could argue it was Krakoa on a much smaller scale and it too was never meant to be forever. Again this is comics not a novel, LOTR was a singular story that had a beginning, middle and and more importantly finite end comics however are ever changing both in landscape, character and plot whether the current story has the character/s in a good or bad place does not mean they will remain that way forever.
@@Wezt334 it's not to suit my narrative, it's to suit the actual lore and books that he spent years writing and crafting together. But yeahhh let's take the words of maybe an hour long interview instead. Because by your logic, then we should be calling lightsabers laserswords instead since that's what George Lucas calls it in oh so many interviews. Explain to me how that's different then? For it being a "utopia", dude, it was a nation at best. They stopped calling themselves a utopia after House and Powers of X. And if utopia are your issue, then explain why on Earth is Wakanda still a thing? They should just wipe it out with a flood or something and start fresh you know.. If we're being generous, this is the 3rd or 4th time they are "starting fresh" with the X-men. It's tiring and people slowly start to give up. I know it's my opinion, but so is majority of folks. So yeah you may enjoy starting fresh, but most people like investing in a place or a story, and building on the foundation of it there. Imagine resetting the Harry Potter universe, or Star Wars, try using your logic on those and see how the Fandom reacts.
Agreed 100% I've been saying for years, that Krakoa was mutant Olympus and indeed, it would fall. I loved the story, it broke the mould and changed things up, people changed, their beliefs changed. It was great. all the hubris, injustice, egos, etc, played out exactly as I expected. Epic story telling.
All I am hearing is confirmation of what I believed before I watched the video...Krakoa was a rich enough concept that not only could it have continued, but, the X-men/mutants could have been distanced from the rest of Marvel with their stories shifting focus to these internal conflicts. You're not giving a single reason Krakoa had to end. You're literally listing off all of the stories and books that I wanted to see told in Krakoa. Krakoa is not ending because there were no more stories to be told. Its ending because the MCU can't adapt it. That's why From the Ashes is going to be intentionally bland and reductive.
Great video. One thing i have been wondering... Since we seen in the next era of X-Men they are turning the old school into a prison or something... What happen to Danger? Last time we saw she was staying int he mansion with robot versions of the X-Men since they abandoned her and didn't want any AI on the island. And what of the guy who died that was in love with Danger and was put in the pit because he wanted to be with her? Will he come back to try and get into contact with her?
This idea that there was no conflict with Krakoa is the silliest argument. External enemies - Humans, Aliens, Technology AI, Gods Internal enemies- different ideologies, old rivalries, All of these things could have been used to create conflict. I'm sorry Blur but this argument that Krakoa needs to end just because Krakoa isn't perfect and they just need to go back to the mansion as if it was perfect is silly.
I am one of those who didn't want Krakoa to end and I caught some guff from it online. It would descend into name calling and no discussion happened. So, thank you for making this video outlining the thoughts and reasons as to why it should go. It's the first time I've heard such an excellent argument. Keep up the top notch content
I wish yall could hear the Monopoly ad that came up when Blerd started talking about “clapping” lmao. I thought he inserted some big band music and I almost choked on my food 😂😂😂
Oh well, the Morlocks can get over it. You obviously don't remember that the Morlocks you sympathize for are the same Morlocks that have kidnapped, mutilated, and killed people. They don't get a pass. Krakoa was a starting over point for them all. The babies issue is a non issue 😂I mean c'mon dog 🤦♂️
I imagine there is a lot of money in making negative videos, but I love your channel because you don't do that. Sure, you may have a criticism, but it is quick and you keep moving. I can't imagine the last time I heard you spend a video complaining. I say this to say I always try to catch your stuff even though I'm always a month behind. If I saw any other video labeled Why Krakoa needs to end, I would have skipped it assuming it was a rant that somehow sneaks in racism and mysogyny in place of intelligent critism.
I think every criticism you made about an imperfect Krakoa is valid. The ruling class of Krakoa WERE arrogant. They were messy. They made mistakes. Which is exactly why I loved it. Because beyond the corruption, the imperfections, the concept, the idea and the ideals of Krakoa were sound, and at it's core represented a natural progression, a culmination of sorts of everything that came before. Xavier's dream of peaceful co-existence? It never worked. Magneto pushing the mutant's survival and agenda by terror and brute force? It didn't work. But this time WAS different. They broke all the rules. And the beauty of it, no one really had to sacrifice their sense of self to make it work. They were who they were. Magneto's ALWAYS been arrogant. Did you think he was going to stop? Xavier has ALWAYS been arrogant? Did you think he was going to stop? Absolutely not. And that's what I loved about it. I think your criticisms with Krakoa at least with me, has had the opposite and unintended effect. Build on these imperfections. Let's see the internal struggle of the ruling class give way to a true democracy while simultaneously continuing to fight off Orchis. That's a damn good story there. What are the ramifications of making babies and not caring for them? Are concepts of traditional children raising considered "too Human" and should be rejected by mutants? There's a story there. Why was it decided that only Domino, Kid Omega and Wolverine attack the Forge over and over again? Why not every Omega level mutant attack? There's a story there. And then there's elements that weren't addressed by you that should be explored. I'm not thoroughly convinced that the universe resets if Moira dies. I think when she dies, she starts anew but the reality she left? There's no reason why it shouldn't continue. After all, that reality existed BEFORE she was born, there's no reason for it to end after dies. Again, this is a story to explore. Krakoa doesn't have to end. There's literally years of potential storytelling from this paragraph alone. And we haven't even touched on the Omega Level mutant Storm who NEVER DIED in the Krakoan Era and her reign to be the regent of Arrakko and the voice of Sol, and all the ramifications that came with it. As Beast descended into villainy, Storm's arc of ascension was unparalleled. There's more stories to tell. A flawed Krakoa guarantees fascinating storytelling. It shouldn't signal it's demise.
Honestly, I agree. X men’s soap operas are what gets me hooked. You mean to tell me Hank’s arrogant blue ass goes too far and people have to actually address it? Sign me up. What’s this? We have a story where Monet, Angel, Trinary and Selene beat up Fenris? Yes! We get a story where Karma is a leading role, Wolfsbane reminds us why she should never be around kids, we have a deep dive into the psychology of the Shadow King and Martha Johanson chews people out!? Hell yeah! What else? Stories where Stacy X, Dust and blindfold were doing stuff were fantastic.
Create a new conflict! Stop reusing the same conflict over and over. Human fear mutants but love Fantastic 4. Makes no sense! I don’t want to see them move from the planet of Mars and go back to living in their mom’s basement. So many other stories that could be told beyond the same ole conflict. I hate that it’s gonna end. The next run will get one book purchase from more me. It better be damn good or I’m done.
This opened up so many’s possible stories. Like imagine if the Australian team reunited on Mars. Imagine what a Mars or space adventure could’ve looked like. Or how about this idea, get rid of the entire we hate mutants crap and turn it to we like em like I like another normal human.
"krakoa must end cause you can't tell story in utopia": proceed to enumerate the source of conflicts and storytelling brought by krakoa. "So yea, all those strife demonstrate it was a flawed paradise so that's why it must end" like as if the building of an utopia wasn't chokefull of 'human heart in conflict". Seem like a huge waste and a pety marketing/editorial shift but okay, let go to the new and exiting "a handfull of mutant in bunkers".
Krakoa was cool at first, but it ended up feeling too pretentious with the writing. Resurrection is the reason why I took most of the issues off my pull list. It was getting old. I also really hated the Moira reveal. But there were some fun stories. It could be my nostalgia glasses that wants a more down to earth X-Men that are fighting for everyone.
It was a very fun ride. Some things that were done were problematic af, but the X-Men books have always been a great superhero soap opera. And trust and believe, with the success of this era, it's only on the self for awhile.
One of your most eloquent videos Blerd and they are all pretty bloody eloquent. "There is a wrong way to administer justice." You could have that printed on buttons when you run for mayor, DA or.....
Insightful commentary. Never liked Hickman’s Krakoa from the beginning, primarily because the characters were not written well, nothing like the Claremont era. And such drastic shifts in character. I never got over Kitty Pride willing to mutilate an opponent with her power.
I understand the need for conflict to keep a story going...but why would you not try to evolve on a set story. To just go back to the "they hate us" and again lets blow up the mutants, etc... I ❤ the X-men but Im getting bored of the rethoric. Lol
I agree! As much as I loved the Krakoa era it couldn’t last forever. That wouldn’t make sense. Although, I’m not super excited about this upcoming new era i’m willing to give it a shot.
It def has to have conclusion….but I don’t want it 😅😭 I find it poignant that when we talk about most runs in comics, we refer to a specific writer or artist. Yeah, this was Hickman’s baby but we all call it the Krakoa Era. This meant something important to longtime X-Men fans. The persecuted finally attained what they had been fighting for over decades. Im excited to see what’s next. Hate to see you go…but I love to watch you leave 😂
As usual, your analysis is on point. I just hope that when the next phase unfolds, they don’t abandon all the character changes of the last few years. If all the mutants who started out villains go back to their old ways, that’s a real wasted opportunity.
Completely right @Blerd, and at the same time, with every great story, there is a longing by the audience for that illusion of happily ever after, and getting to the new era could also be done with the leaders learning their lessons and using a reset to basically pull a Moses. We can found Krakoa (or a version of it) but it a) cannot have us in it, and b) won't be for everyone. Therein all you said comes to bear. 1) Krakoa gets its system of psychic sustenance, and has its Five, but it also has 2) a democratically elected government, without 3) any of the worst offenders being allowed in. Plenty of conflict could still arise, but they could be off and out of spotlight for a decade or so while the X-Men are dealing with the realities of a) not all mutants wanted to go so bigots still target the smaller presence, b) the worst villains (e.g., Marauders, Selene, etc.) were barred entry, so they're still the world's problem, c) making mutants look bad, and even d) still wanting to have entry to Krakoa (at least some) so making their way there and causing problems. On top of the fact, even without the main heroes and villains involved, other mutants are flawed and problems will still arise.
Honestly, yeah I get it. Shame for it to end but it could not exist in the form it had. The reason why Third Eye was imprisoned is darker but also funnier; he took couples who were thinking of abandoning any kids they had if they didn’t use protection to the astral plane to see the consequences. He scared them straight so badly that the birth rate fell by 25%. The hatchery was run by Stacy X and I loved when she punched Nightcrawler. Almost like retribution for the Chuck Austen era. They didn’t even have an adoption system in place. And there’s me constantly thinking “the Hellions are a thing, Maddie wasn’t allowed on the island and the Morlocks chose to have the Florida golf course instead because they didn’t feel safe.”. And YET, Cassandra Nova can prune Krakoa’s organs to her heart’s content. On top of that, FENRIS, the “what are you doing Stepbro?” But with less steps Hydra agents were both allowed to have offices of power. I know they’re the flops but it said a lot. Probably why I liked X corp so much; because it confronted the failings of Krakoa that those two could be seen as Ambassadors with their consulting firm. I feel sorry for Doug when he would monitor their quarters. Making characters like Danger, an AI, and Selene, a magical user who can resurrect without the system’s help, was a really bad call. Especially after Apocalypse left. That Cerebro episode was right; Selene got elected to the quiet Council and apocalypse came back to fire everywhere lol. The big one is that issues the X men already had came to a head. Beast is the big one isn’t he? Sells a homeless black woman to Sinister? Gets praised for curing the legacy virus. Destroys numerous timelines by pulling the original 5 teens to the present to get on his “I hate Scott” soapbox? Gets scolded by the Watcher and just goes to bed. Genocides a Latin American nation? Jean throws him around but never reports him. Legion was literally trying to help people but his dad was awful to him. Props to Blindfold verbally destroying Charles. Good on her. Here’s my issue with Krakoa; half of the leaders sucked and it’s only because of the citizens in each book that most problems are noted, let alone handled. The terraforming was a massive feat but they left the MVP of Academy X, Dust, to clear up after them. She’s an icon. Yeah, keeping Moira isolated made sense but it did mean that the two characters who would’ve added more nuance to her, Proteus and Wolfsbane, weren’t seen anywhere near her until the second gala. I will say that, out of the quiet council members, Storm, Kate and Emma were the MVP’s.
My two biggest concerns were how easily some mutants were ok with the new society (felt Storm, Nightcrawler would have issues) and the isolationist attitude (departing so drastically from Charles’s dream on which the team had always been adamant). I agree, and it was told that a fall was going to happen. Kroakan era had a beginning, middle and end from its inception (even if writer was no longer). It should not be revised as it should be something remembered and work should be made not to go there again. Not exactly like that. Let’s see…
That is what I regret, the possibilities a year or two of more comics dedicated to address (more in depth) the flaws of that society could have given us.
And that is why comic books are not as popular as manga is. People like to see their characters develop in different ways and not get reset every couple years.😂
This had SO much potential, though! If they learned from their mistakes and made things better, the stories could have had outside conflict to fuel them. As it was, the mistakes were coming from within and they were never addressed. Fans were too drunk on the hype of "Oppressed group in control of their oppressors," that they never saw the flaws.
Finally, a mutant character I can relate to. Both as a conjure man and as an anti-natalist I can totally relate to what Third Eye was saying. There are far too many children in this society being abandoned and neglected by adults all because of selfish reasons. Only for those children to be lost within a system that leaves them vulnerable to abuse -creating more victims and abusers. Also, wasn't the "make more mutants" Nightcrawler's decree since he's a practicing Catholic priest his beliefs influenced this law. What was his response to such negligence? Did he even express accountability for encouraging such reckless behavior across Krakoa? Did he try to resolve it? Most likely not.
It's also quite ironic a guy like Nightcrawler would suggest this.Considering he had such a horrible checker passed with his own parents. I know he's catholic but he should have at least thought of family planning especially what he No so many Fellow mutants that have been abandoned by their families. They may have been human but it doesn't really matter abandonment is abandonment Whether it's a mutant or a human.

Man, I unsubscribed from you from a prior video a few weeks ago. Just sometimes I can’t get on board with some things n it’s how I separate. But then this video shows up on my feed and it’s liquid gold and now I’m back! …for now
This is/was my favorite era but I agree with everything about this video. I just hope(d) that Krakoa would stay around much like Latveria and Wakanda. I think with all these problems mentioned in this breakdown, it could provide a template of what NOT to do should they keep around a sovereign Mutant Nation. But yeah, comics. Lol.
It needs to end because it became to convoluted and hard to keep up, from about 6 comics bi-weekly to maybe about 12 comics bi-weekly. There were many great stories especially when Hickman was steering the ship. Plus it gave alot of the b and c xteams great stories. The hellfire gala was great each year, wanda became magnetos daughter again. Apocalypse was great as a team builder. Then it started to go into chaos, when the writers kinda got free reign so to say.
I will say, first off, I've only watched 10 minutes of this so far, but I felt I needed to respond. I'll watch the rest afterwards. No conflict is boring. That I agree. In many instances, if there is a prolonged peace, at some point there is a fast forward of the story, so that it takes place near the start of when the peace starts to break down. However, I will say that you don't ALWAYS have to have physical injury and murder to have conflict. Conflict can be a personal story. Take Lifedeath as an example. Take Silver Surfer Requiem for example. A conflict can be, hey, we need to seriously deal with the Trauma of having the morlocks in the same place as the Mauraders. That in of itself could easily have been 10 books; perhaps leading to a trial, perhaps leading to a desire to excommunicate them, perhaps dealing with some members of the morlocks attacking the Mauraders and then being thrown in the Pit. But it doesn't have to be an existential threat to the world. This I will touch on later, but another option is. Well the conflict is relationship conflicts. I don't care what you tell me. I've read the X-Men for decades. There is no way Wolverine, Cyclops and Jean Grey are going to be having whatever they were having. I kinda interpreted more as Both had access to Jean, as oppose to a threesome, but that type of deep seated issues isn't not going to just go away because there is a temporary truce. Take conflicting tribes in say a Foreign made Nigeria country, and 200 years later and you STILL have conflict among the tribes even though they are supposed to be 1 Country. So tell more personal stories about characters themselves. But more on that later. Next, Even if you have conflict that leads to fighting, Afterall, this is a comic book, Not every conflict has to be Extinction level, or worse, Universal or Multiversal in it's scale. It's the DBZ issue. Keep increasing the scale, keep giving them a power creep, and then eventually, you are left with telling a story about the most powerful persons in each universe fighting each other as, the scale is no longer a local Tenkaichi Budokai on Earth anymore. This is why I HATE Omega Level Mutants. The whole, no upper limit thing is dumb. All animals have limit to everything they do. All everything has a limit, The biggest black hole doesn't not swallow the universe, The Sun's gravity has no effect on anything in the Virgo Supercluster. There is nothing wrong with a conflict that leads to maybe a damage of a few buildings, if the story behind that damage was well made and thought off. What is the X-Men at it's core. Go back to 1963. It is a team of young people, initially teenagers, who were learning to use their powers, while at the same time living in a world that hated and feared them. They were enrolled at a School for Gifted Youngsters, where they taught the Benevolent leader in Professor X. The groups there, learn how to use their powers. So for example, there were limits. Cyclops would get tired if he used his powers too much and needed rest, he learned how to bouce his beams off the walls to be a good marksmen. They learn how to use their powers together in tamdem. The Danger room was pivotal to this. It is also a place where they came of age, relationships happened, conflicts happen, but they learn to be a family, when in many instances their personal family had abandoned them; or like in Wolverine eventually, he didn't even know them as his memories were wiped. The Family aspect, the team aspect is gone today. Everyone keeps saying, hey they are going back to the mansion as if that is a 4 letter word, but the Mansion is pivotal in the X-Men, more so that most other teams. While they may go off in space, go to Australia, or elsewhere, the Mansion was always the place where they eventually found their footing. Krakoa was not that. To me, Krakoa was just a different Australian Outback. Eventually, it was going to end. But I don't see why they are in new Orleans or Alaska. Watch X-Men 97. There is a Reason why that works. go back and watch it, and you are like.... THAT's the X-Men. That is the essence of what the X-Men is. the biggest damage in episode 2 was the UN building. The biggest damage to episode 3 was the X-mansion or Sinister's mansion. The conflict itself, the lost of identity, the lost of a child. That was a far bigger conflict, then the end of the world extinction, Secret Wars multiversal ending that it seems these stories are pushing for. A Dominion that is outside time and space, that is essentially a God?? or sinister kinda ruling for 1000 years... come on these stories are not X-Men. So yes, The Krakoan age needed to End. But I don't have faith Marvel is willing to Course Correct.
The Phalanx
None of the 3 upcoming core X-Men titles take place in the mansion
@@juansanchez209yeah, but it’s more like a return to the old status quo

This Era was the best X-Men had in a long time. It made the X-Men exciting again 🔥
Same
Definitely, they haven't been good to me in decades.
Big facts
It definitely did a whole lot for them.
I just love that Mutants stood on business during this run. We was running all fades. All mutants welcome. But i agree we had problems too
founding a nation is messy, and they learned that real fast.
Doom got to keep his country but the mutants can't smh
They tried to have a Doom less Latveria…it was worse than when Dr Doom ran it (between Christoff and Lucia von Bardess those two made a mess )
Ikr? Even tho Krakoa makes so much sense and is the best thing for mutants
Genosha didn't have all these problems and they couldn't even keep that...
Dracula got to keep his vampire nation longer too.
Arrako will still be around after Fall of X: they've already solicited a miniseries where Apocalypse has taken over as leader of the planet.

I've loved the Krakoa era. My favorite X-Men era in a long time.
100% correct! Krakoa was crazy as hell! But ultimately it was an ethno-state that had planted the seeds of it's own destruction at the very beginning
The Krakroa era will always be a special period in my life. All good things come to an end. And that’s ok.
Krakoa era is the best era in X-Men it finally made Storm and Omega mutant. Plus, Synch is in the spotlight and recognized Apocalypse and his family as Black Egyptians.
100%. Which is what makes it ironic that this channel would want it to end.

Krakoan era by far the worst X-men era by far. Storm was a much more prominent character when she was unquestionably the leader of Marvels main team for decades. Don't understand why anyone gives modern Marvel credit for a few token issues for Storm and ultra fascist Krakoan state.
I still want Krakoa. I mean we have Atlantis, Wakanda, and Latveria
The krakoa era brought the X-men back on top after a few years back X-men books
Sucks trying to start a war with the inhumane sales was down
I sure hope when the krakoa era ends that X-men sales don t drop to far
From Hickman the Krakaon era was only supposed to last 2 to 3 years. So we knew it was going to end it was just how and when.
I mean, Hickman is probably the best writer in Marvel by a large margin, so pretending that he isn't kinda Godly at this is wild.
@@elbimio4u shoulda written an actual arc then
I get how he writes and HoX/PoX is untouchable, but all he has to show for his time on main X-Men is very underwhelming Giant Sized issues and a few neat one offs that he abandoned and did nothin with.
Even though it’s obvious it was becoming very effed up and we knew this would happen now for months….. but still my emotions say “Noooo we don’t want to see krakoa go!!!”
lol
Animal Farm is actually a great analogy for the Krakoan Era
Precisely.
The Krakoan Era works well from a story standpoint. I think ending it is throwing away a huge opportunity.
This video is going to make a lot of people upset... but it needs to be said.
Definitely needed to be said.
I think krakoa should move deep underground for the morlocks. And only storm would know about it. Like the xmens own children of the vault.
I loved that this Era did something with Betsy. I hope they don't forget about her moving forward.
You cooked, I was on the side of the mutants can't have nothing...but you made a very good argument. I just don't want them to go back the mansion.
I really love the krakoa era. However I do agree every story must end. “If you love me let me gooooooo!!!!!”
Krakoa was the X-Men Breaking Bad era.
Nah it’s the most interesting thing they’ve done with X-men in a decade
The Krakoa era ended when Hickman left. And yes, I'm still salty about it.
Same
Why did he leave or was he let go?
Agreed. They didn’t know what to do with it after he “left” or whatever happened there.
It makes it too easy to retcon deaths of characters with the krakoa arc.
Takes a lot of hte stakes out of it imo.
Krakoa era was dope. Nuff said
All I am hearing is confirmation of what I believed before I watched the video...Krakoa was a rich enough concept that not only could it have continued, but, the X-men/mutants could have been distanced from the rest of Marvel with their stories shifting focus to these internal conflicts.
External enemies - Humans, Aliens, Technology AI, Gods
Internal enemies- different ideologies, old rivalries,
All of these things could have been used to create conflict.
Thank You for what was actually a Great commentary on the situation with Krakoa Era!!!
I can see what Black Americans could be like if we could have a nation of our own. Nation Building isn't easy
We kind of did with the establishment of Liberia 🇱🇷
On that I can agree. The Krakoa era opened up storytelling more than anything I've experienced since the Claremont years. Gonna be hard to beat that.
@@slyaugustus9578Think something else will come from it.
"So yea, all those strife demonstrate it was a flawed paradise so that's why it must end"
like as if the building of an utopia wasn't chokefull of 'human heart in conflict".
Your commentary on the ending of the Age of Krakoa gave me closure. I loved this Era so much. I’m looking forward to the next story
Lol
Preach!
I just want the mutants to all be somewhere together. It doesn't need to be an island. But I loved Forges idea for a future
Unfortunately starting to look like it's gonna be the mansion
I agree! As much as I loved the Krakoa era it couldn’t last forever. That wouldn’t make sense. Although, I’m not super excited about this upcoming new era i’m willing to give it a shot.
Agree completely. Krakoa was a ground breaking and fantastic story. Because it was so well done, the utopia failed, and needed to fail.
It def has to have conclusion….but I don’t want it 😅😭
I find it poignant that when we talk about most runs in comics, we refer to a specific writer or artist.
Amazing vid brotha man! Appreciate the perspective and breakdown💯
They should have had NANNY running the Hatchery .. Makes Perfect Sense
Here's the thing and alot of fans and those who get on the bandwagon don't want to hear and that changes in comic aren't really permanent

11:42 Duude My character is "The Badger" one of the babies from that very krakoan hatchery! Great vid! 🫡
Man, I unsubscribed from you from a prior video a few weeks ago. Just sometimes I can’t get on board with some things n it’s how I separate. But then this video shows up on my feed and it’s liquid gold and now I’m back! …for now
Great breakdown of the Krakoa Era. Thank you for your insight and comic wisdom. Keep it, plus ultra.
Lol.
I agree with the Sabertooth thing! I thought so at the time it happened.
