  • My friends, weathering a brown tank is not something we do every day, and when you couple a brown camouflage with heavy mud effects, it presents a nice, creative challenge!

Hey Nightshift. I still watch your videos, but since you started making fewer videos, TH-cam has stopped pushing your videos to me. At all. Maybe you need to think about making smaller promo videos, teasers or updates to keep your channel alive in the algorithm. Sorry for the bother, you can probably see the statistics better than I can.

For the characters, brown primer makes a lot more sense. In combination with tan zenithal, you'll get warmer tones, especially for the skin, where the translucency doesn't really allow for fully black shadows.
Also, if you think of photography, the fill light could be your dark primer where the shaded areas are. Black primer i would say makes everything unnecessarily dark and dirty looking. Your techniques of darkening elements with oils towards the end, add more than enough darkness where it's needed.
At least that's my conclusion, seeing i kinda abandoned gray or black primer.

I always look forward to your builds, I especially like the details you add. Painting and weathering are a personal thing so, I don't commonly make any comments about it. However, in this case, the model is just so highly stylized that I was really disappointed in the finish. I know, I know, your model, and I always allow for artistic license, but this time it looks like art not a miniature replica of a tank. Still, really like the model and looking forward to the diorama! 👍

I absolutely adore what you do and the effects you achieve. You are incredibly talented. But, must EVERYTHING, every bolt, every edge, and every detail have the halo of a shadow effect around it? Done to excess it does have a negative effect on the realism.

i find it really interesting hearing nightshift talk abt how highlighting details like bolts and rivets after pin shading is "controversial" which is (almost) always done with wh40k/fantasy models (and most other wargamesas far as i can tell), every detail gets a nice highlight to make sure that people can see them and distinguish them, idk its just interesting

  • @ironspike171

I love how the model in between looks ugly and unnatural. But in the end its looks more accurate that i would have imagined it ever would. This is what our Uncle Nightshift set apart from many other modellers. He has clearly an understanding how things work out at the end, even when in between it gets ugly.

It's good to have a rough idea bout how the finished model should look like, and it also helps when you already know how each layer interacts with the previous ones. There's nothing worse than panicking halfway through thinking the model is looking bad even though it's far from finished :)

I feel mini painting community is kicked in the head with the idea of SPEED PAINTING which is kinda a pressure you feel sitting to a mini. Like techniques efficiency this or that, I love your approach mate. Paintjob is obviously mind blowing, thank you I think this is very inspiring whatever is your miniature of choice
