Nice one mate. I think you got the right balance of wear, a bit of grime but not too much, looks good. 👌🏼 Too often modellers put too much dirt and rust on interiors, but tankers practically lived in their machines and generally tried to have the interiors as orderly and squared away as possible, I think you've nailed it. 👍🏾
It's meant for adding some artistic effects to be more pleasing to the eye. Making everything in a tank look new is a style but a bit boring for my tastes

I love building interior models I never textured the inside but looking at your result I'll try it on my Tiger 2 which I working on now, I also started using lead wire for spark plug wires, cables etc. and I love it. I'll use the wire primer too

At 3:58 the narrator shows us a small part and suggests that it's "power distribution" for the radio. That part did not exist in Tigers. RFM created this kit by studying photos of "Tiger 131" in the UK. As far as I can tell, they did not visit the museum to look at the tank close up. And that's why they copied this little box, which is a modern controller for a fire suppressor system. It was added to Tiger 131 because of modern safety requirements. RFM have been told about this, the error came to light in 2005. They could easily erase that part from their instruction sheet. But they don't. That's why I keep flagging it.
Thanks for sharing. I recall a similar piece on the Panther tanks which is where my conclusion came from. I also had seen the same wiring installation done in guides put out by Ammo of MIG. I guess I'll have to do more research next time! Will say it has been tough to find authentic interior photos of a Tiger though!
@@relentlesstorm I wouldn't trust Mig for anything, to be honest. Concerning the radios: each module of the radio set (there were either two or three installed) had its own power supply, a smaller grey box. In most Panzers they are visible somewhere or other. But in a Tiger I they are under the floor panels.

Thank you! I agree on the decals as well. I think some modellers get exciting about weathering and forget to put decals on until the end. I know I've done it. This is my first RFM kit of many and I'm happy with it. Think I have all but two or three of their interior kits in my stash to get to. Very impressive so far tho! Good luck with your build!
@@relentlesstorm My favorite kits are the recovery type tanks. With the booms and the chains and cables, it make a very interesting kit visually. I think I now have 3 different Allied recovery tank kits in my stash. I think 2 Sherman variants and a M3 variant. Right now they are all packed away, so I’m kind of guesstimating right now. Also depending on where you live, the good quality kits for me are about 60 bucks. So I’ve been paying the extra, about 90 bucks and up,,,, for kits with interiors. For me it’s like getting ‘2’ kits in one. I’ve got a mini art M3 Lee with interior, a Sherman, and a Panther. Looking to eventually buy a Tiger variant. But,,,, now strange for me to say “I’m retired and on a pension” so I have to save all my nickels and dimes to buy the good kits. I’m hoping to start my own channel, and my first build, after getting back into to building after 45 plus years, will be a Willy’s jeep, because it’s an easy simple build, and you have to start somewhere. Your videos and the other on the channel are a good inspiration for others to get into building. I’m hoping this retired old fart might be able to have videos to joint this great group in order to inspire others to start building. The recovery vehicles are fascinating considering how they were usually retired tanks that were retrofitted with cranes and other engineering equipment. Very exciting!
Beautiful build, usually I am not a Tiger model fan (saw so many passing by😉) But a detailed, well crafted interior (and exterior) makes it interesting for me again.
That was exactly the problem with this tank, engine and gearbox was overstretched and with that many mechanical problems. They even used the same engine in a kingtiger, imagen that.
Jus thought I'd add: 17:29 Tamiyas acrylic 'XF-84 'FLAT DARK IRON' is a GREAT exposed steel color, dark steel greyish-brown without a 'silvery' sheen of any sort... (TAM's XF-56 'METALLIC GREY' works well dry-brushed over the top of XF84 D.I for high wear exposed edges)... -Again, the TAM XF-56 Met-Grey dry-brushed over the top of it isnt too shiny in an unrealistic manner. I use quite a bit of the Dark-Iron in combo with the German undercoat/primer RotBraun/Red-Brown iron oxide as base coats or for chipping....;)

Bit late, but for the fire extinguishers, I had some included on a 1/35th M36B1 model I built, and upon searching for reference photos I found that some were silver, olive drab, a lighter sort of tan colour like on the Tiger, and a few red ones. I'm not certain of the authenticity of all of these, but it seems as though the olive drab and tan colours were the most common
Thanks for the information. I had one reference photo in black and white that clearly showed a silver extinguisher as well. I chose the tan color for the extinguisher inside and outside as red would've stood out too much I think.
@@relentlesstorm Sometimes the black and white reference photos can be hard to tell. I think you made the right choice, especially as most of the red ones seemed to be more recent photos and not during the war. This is the first interior kit I've seen someone build and it looks great
I have been trying for years to get mine to look this good, never works. I am 61 and have been building models since I was around 7 or 8, I just recently had to move so most of my things are still packed away. Am hoping to jump right back into the fun real soon.
They were primered in red then painted a base coat. Panthers were typically painted in the off-white. Tigers were painted a blue-grey color and the off-white. There was a small stretch of a few months where the Panthers were only primered in red and not coated in white. Check out my Panther build and you will see that.
No, at first they were painted a medium blue-grey colour in the lower half, and Ivory in the top half, and all pieces of working machinery in the Ivory part were painted black. I can't speak for the very small tanks, but this rule applies to the Panzer III and everything larger. Sometime in the early-to-middle of 1943 they began to stop using the blue-grey paint and they just left the lower part of the tank in its red primer. There was also a brief period there when they didn't use the Ivory paint, leaving almost everything red, but there were complaints, so they soon brought the Ivory back. As for the Tiger I : it seems like the engine compartment of Panzers were usually left in red primer regardless of the year. But the Tiger I got the blue-grey colour in there too.

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. Weathering is very subjective and it is one of those things that can be difficult to balance between realism and something that is eye catching and fun to look at from an artistic standpoint. Another difficult aspect of weathering is that old photos don't have the resolution to see such fine details so it can be difficult to use references. I try not to over-weather and make a functioning tank look abandoned but again, it is all about balance.
Im building this tank at the moment, but there are some faults in the kit . Like the whole asmebly for the radio is missing and the piping and plumming for the engine in the manual. So i bought a book with Nice pictures to find al the parts lent in the sprues
VMS black thick CA or thin CA depending on the application. VMS makes great CA both clear and black, both thick and thin. Their CA remover is safe to use on styrene too.
This ones next in my build queue w/ATAK zim set/Metal Tracks. Itll be under a 16T Fries crane getting its turret roof plate OxyAcetyline cut & replaced w/a donor roof plate, by a Schwere Panzer WerkStattCompany crew (Battle damage/partial pen to top side turret that also buckled the roof plate beyond simple/common repairs)...So as to better show the turret interior, although a bit of the inside turret walls will be lined with anti fire/slag leather sheets.... Its my 2nd stab @ such a scene, guess the 1st one was a prototype? Plus my skills have advanced quite a bit since I'd finished the 1st one.... (Been steadily working away on a Normandy '44 Panzer WerkStattCo(s) mega-dio for past 15 years now. Base prob be 5-9 foot in dimension, poss 4x8? Well see I guess?) NICE WORK here man! (RFM made a Boo-Boo with the T1's rearmost sponson ammo storage, as all the stored 88 rounds were stored facing forwards (Make such MUCH easier for the loader & crew) Oh well, if interested, if youre not familiar with already, David Byrdens 'Tiger 1 Info Site' has damn near EVERY modeling company's 1/35th Tiger 1 model kits omissions, oversight(s), miss-steps n' whoopsies. Hes got an accurate critique on nearly 60+ T1 kits, past & presently available, multiple photos, changes made from early-mid-late, explanations, & diagrams available for every issue presented.... -A Tiger 1's ADHD prone 'Rivet-Counters' dream site..;) You'd prob be interested in the two-book/volume hardcover series: "Repairing The Panzers-German Tank Maintenance In WW2" in ENG by author: Lukas Friedli ($50-55$)...Emphasis on the heavies & mediums in all manner of disrepair & re-fit. HIGHLY recommended for the armor modeler...;) Keep up tha great work dood!

('Tiger Model Designs' wonderful resin 6-8 ton bilstein crane & his accessories offered for vehicle, 'Panzer-Art' FAMO front wheels & all the Wheels/Tires for the Famo's Sd.Ah.116 23 ton trailer, 'Panzer Concepts' FAMO late fender/air-tanks/wheels/track kit. 'BoldDivision' folded canvas drivers cab/tilt. the TAM FAMO also kitbashed with sub-assemblies from 'AFV Clubs' Bussing-Nag 4500A 3-ton crane truck (AFV's is an EXCELLENT, well-detailed kit BTW, you'd prob dig?)...All I can say is that Ive painted up nearly every era-appropriate 'PlusModel' accessory set they offer, many in multiples...Ha! Thank the Lord above for PlusModel. I appreciate the more mundane aspects of life behind the front, as the fiery kinetic energy of combat scenes is well nigh tough to capture in any scale (Or do correctly, although it can be done) Prob 4 PZ III's, 5+ PZ IV's, 6-8 panthers, 3 Bergepanther recovery tanks, 5 heavily mod'd FAMOS w/two trailers, 6-7 Tiger 1's, 10+ StuG III's/IV's, 6 or so Sd.Kfz 234's armored cars of all types.(Then RFM & Miniart releases NEW Sd.Kfz 234's!?..Grrr-ood thing I guess?...;) Bunch of soft skin vehicles, buses, Anti-Aircraft emplaced 88's & 20-37mm armed 1/2 tracked Sd.Kfz 7's & 8's. A TON of scratch-building (Which I LOVE doing;), all 'Hansa Systems" structure & buildings, hes got GREAT stuff BTW-'Legos' for adults;) All buildings present plumbed for lighting, etc....Plan on donating the dio to a museum when done.... The overall scene being a French mans rural countryside Gas Station, bearing his own auto/heavy truck repair shop, machine shop, foundry & auto junkyard. GREAT short term place for Germans to rent from him for a bit & set up operations due to in-place additional heavy lift gantries. Late June-Mid July 1944, somewhere between Falaise & Argentan, France.... SO Correct as to ones skill progression, even models completed just 2 short years ago dont seem to stack up quality wise against current builds, so time to re-purchase & rebuild em (Or try to repaint/jazz em up a bit if poss). This on top of modeling since I was 5 years of age (Born: 12/25/1974) Theres >always< room to get better right? I hate to point this out but once the main gun recoils, it will throw the empty shell casing straight back, and each of these casings hit a leather pad at the end of the basket, of which I dont see here. Small point of course, but with all the other details youve put in, missing this bugs me enough to remind you! Sorry for the nitpicking, this is the best Tiger interior Ive ever seen modeled, so why not just put in a small brown leather square where it stops the casing after ejection?
I believe that towards the end of the war the nazis used steel for the shell casings as they didn’t have brass…. Could be wrong, but otherwise a great build and go to vid for armour. Thanks
The Maybach engine is actually a V12 gasoline engine. Many German and American tanks were gas powered early in the war. Heck the US used radial engines in the Shermans and Stuarts to start.
I’m surprised they actually modeled the turret interior. I haven’t really done any of this before, but I just assumed it was hollow shell, like the M4 Sherman model my friend built and gifted to me, there only was the areas for the model crew to stand on for me.
.01"? I didn't have any wire that thin. I think the size I used portrayed the headsets just fine. One has to be realistic in what materials you use when making something this complex. Have you made this model? I'm curious if you've taken into account the thickness of the etching solution and paint when you plan this project for yourself. When dealing with such a small scale, even the thickness of layers of paint can make one's measurements inaccurate and ruin the entire model!
The turret inside had no stuff as they went flying about when receiving hits like pieces of shrapnel. One Ammo bin under floor is actually a storage bin. RFM refuses to fix their inaccuracies despite years of Tigers. They added engine detail (after charging for them as separate parts - shame on them) The turret rods you fitted look good but one of them will make the gunner very uncomfortable as it cuts across where he sits. You fit it in the wrong place Wonderful build
@@relentlesstorm no need to be so defensive. It makes you look like a sensitive bigot. You obviously have no idea about how to use reference materials - I already told you the list of blatant errors you have made. Now quit crying and put a diaper on your head
Commendable attention to detail, accuracy and realism. BUT then at 4:59 you replicate cast texture on the hull and turret interior. Problem with that given that the steel was NOT cast. It was welded rolled steel, and if you look at photos of the actual beast (like 131 at The Tank Museum at Bovington…plenty of pictures and interior video), the surface is smooth. Thus in your penchant for accuracy, the texture that you added was way over the top. It’s your model, so that’s your prerogative as you are building for your satisfaction. But as an IPMS competition judge, if this was entered in competition I would be raising an eyebrow at that and pondering my score sheet. Also, you made the comment, in effect, of “same steel, same texture” throughout the tank…but then the texture was only selectively applied. Following your theory, why wouldn’t it be on the top of the sponsons, on the bulkheads, etc. if it was the same steel? If you are going to do a technique, consistency of technique scores or removes points. At 7:09 you say “ Look at these beautiful textures. You’re always going to see me do this…”. Yeah. The real subject was never like that. “Always” doing it (to me and some other judges) is incorrect. Research the subject. If there was a lot of cast texture and the kit is lacking it, sure, add it. Now this nitpicking is overwhelmed by the overall quality of your build, but the feedback is well intended and yours to consider or reject.

Ah! yes, there are tons of colored photos from the 1940s. How could I have made such a silly mistake in not looking those up first...please do educate us all here on TH-cam about your background on 1940s armor and exact shades that were used on every part. There’s plenty of information about tank interior colours available on line and you have used the colours of an early Tiger 1 on what is clearly a late version. Your work is excellent but if you are after realism then getting the colour right is rather important especially if you are going to post a video showing others how to do it.

That was exactly the problem with this tank, engine and gearbox was overstretched and with that many mechanical problems. They even used the same engine in a kingtiger, imagen that.
Which is accurate. The Maybach HL230 was the same powerplant as used in the Panther.
That's the reason I like making 1/24 cars, especially common production cars because you see them on the street, then on your desk!

17:29 Tamiyas acrylic 'XF-84 'FLAT DARK IRON' is a GREAT exposed steel color, dark steel greyish-brown without a 'silvery' sheen of any sort...
(TAM's XF-56 'METALLIC GREY' works well dry-brushed over the top of XF84 D.I for high wear exposed edges)...
-Again, the TAM XF-56 Met-Grey dry-brushed over the top of it isnt too shiny in an unrealistic manner. I use quite a bit of the Dark-Iron in combo with the German undercoat/primer RotBraun/Red-Brown iron oxide as base coats or for chipping....;)

Bit late, but for the fire extinguishers, I had some included on a 1/35th M36B1 model I built, and upon searching for reference photos I found that some were silver, olive drab, a lighter sort of tan colour like on the Tiger, and a few red ones. I'm not certain of the authenticity of all of these, but it seems as though the olive drab and tan colours were the most common
Thanks for the information. I had one reference photo in black and white that clearly showed a silver extinguisher as well. I chose the tan color for the extinguisher inside and outside as red would've stood out too much I think.

I thought the lower hulls in most German tanks was painted primer red.
They were primered in red then painted a base coat. Panthers were typically painted in the off-white. Tigers were painted a blue-grey color and the off-white. There was a small stretch of a few months where the Panthers were only primered in red and not coated in white. Check out my Panther build and you will see that.
No, at first they were painted a medium blue-grey colour in the lower half, and Ivory in the top half, and all pieces of working machinery in the Ivory part were painted black.
I can't speak for the very small tanks, but this rule applies to the Panzer III and everything larger.
Sometime in the early-to-middle of 1943 they began to stop using the blue-grey paint and they just left the lower part of the tank in its red primer.
There was also a brief period there when they didn't use the Ivory paint, leaving almost everything red, but there were complaints, so they soon brought the Ivory back.
As for the Tiger I : it seems like the engine compartment of Panzers were usually left in red primer regardless of the year. But the Tiger I got the blue-grey colour in there too.

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. Weathering is very subjective and it is one of those things that can be difficult to balance between realism and something that is eye catching and fun to look at from an artistic standpoint. Another difficult aspect of weathering is that old photos don't have the resolution to see such fine details so it can be difficult to use references. I try not to over-weather and make a functioning tank look abandoned but again, it is all about balance.

Im building this tank at the moment, but there are some faults in the kit . Like the whole asmebly for the radio is missing and the piping and plumming for the engine in the manual. So i bought a book with Nice pictures to find al the parts lent in the sprues

VMS black thick CA or thin CA depending on the application. VMS makes great CA both clear and black, both thick and thin. Their CA remover is safe to use on styrene too.
This ones next in my build queue w/ATAK zim set/Metal Tracks. Itll be under a 16T Fries crane getting its turret roof plate OxyAcetyline cut & replaced w/a donor roof plate, by a Schwere Panzer WerkStattCompany crew (Battle damage/partial pen to top side turret that also buckled the roof plate beyond simple/common repairs)...So as to better show the turret interior, although a bit of the inside turret walls will be lined with anti fire/slag leather sheets....
Its my 2nd stab @ such a scene, guess the 1st one was a prototype? Plus my skills have advanced quite a bit since I'd finished the 1st one....
(Been steadily working away on a Normandy '44 Panzer WerkStattCo(s) mega-dio for past 15 years now. Base prob be 5-9 foot in dimension, poss 4x8? Well see I guess?)
NICE WORK here man! (RFM made a Boo-Boo with the T1's rearmost sponson ammo storage, as all the stored 88 rounds were stored facing forwards (Make such MUCH easier for the loader & crew)

'BoldDivision' folded canvas drivers cab/tilt. the TAM FAMO also kitbashed with sub-assemblies from 'AFV Clubs' Bussing-Nag 4500A 3-ton crane truck (AFV's is an EXCELLENT, well-detailed kit BTW, you'd prob dig?)...All I can say is that Ive painted up nearly every era-appropriate 'PlusModel' accessory set they offer, many in multiples...Ha! Small field hospital, Nachrichten/Signals detachment, olde Roman ruins, large field officer meeting, field laundry, river & bridge. I appreciate the more mundane aspects of life behind the front, as the fiery kinetic energy of combat scenes is well nigh tough to capture in any scale (Or do correctly, although it can be done)
Prob 4 PZ III's, 5+ PZ IV's, 6-8 panthers, 3 Bergepanther recovery tanks, 5 heavily mod'd FAMOS w/two trailers, 6-7 Tiger 1's, 10+ StuG III's/IV's, 6 or so Sd.Kfz 234's armored cars of all types.(Then RFM & Miniart releases NEW Sd.Kfz 234's!?..Grrr-ood thing I guess?...;)
Bunch of soft skin vehicles, buses, Anti-Aircraft emplaced 88's & 20-37mm armed 1/2 tracked Sd.Kfz 7's & 8's. A TON of scratch-building (Which I LOVE doing;), all 'Hansa Systems" structure & buildings, hes got GREAT stuff BTW-'Legos' for adults;) All buildings present plumbed for lighting, etc....Plan on donating the dio to a museum when done....
The overall scene being a French mans rural countryside Gas Station, bearing his own auto/heavy truck repair shop, machine shop, foundry & auto junkyard. GREAT short term place for Germans to rent from him for a bit & set up operations due to in-place additional heavy lift gantries. Late June-Mid July 1944, somewhere between Falaise & Argentan, France....
SO Correct as to ones skill progression, even models completed just 2 short years ago dont seem to stack up quality wise against current builds, so time to re-purchase & rebuild em (Or try to repaint/jazz em up a bit if poss). This on top of modeling since I was 5 years of age (Born: 12/25/1974) Theres >always< room to get better right?
STILL learning new techniques & striving to properly apply them, set new goals or way-points to meet. The reason why I love your own & others vids here on YT, being that I pick up so very much from them. For that: I thank you for your copious amounts of work invested, with not only the models themselves, but the immense amount of TIME invested in the video making editing, narration & overall vid assemblage process.
Such a discipline being an entirely secondary art form in & of itself! (I'd thought about doing so, but it would suck up SO much more time than just the build process's alone! -IF I ever vid n' post examples of my work, itll be a quik n' sloppy job just showing the past n' present works. I hate to point this out but once the main gun recoils, it will throw the empty shell casing straight back, and each of these casings hit a leather pad at the end of the basket, of which I dont see here. Small point of course, but with all the other details youve put in, missing this bugs me enough to remind you! Sorry for the nitpicking, this is the best Tiger interior Ive ever seen modeled, so why not just put in a small brown leather square where it stops the casing after ejection?

Had no idea those big cats had gasoline V8s with dual 4 barrels, wow. Would have been way better off with diesel engines.
The Maybach engine is actually a V12 gasoline engine. Many German and American tanks were gas powered early in the war. Heck the US used radial engines in the Shermans and Stuarts to start.
During the war, diesel was actually difficult to find, it wasn’t a popular fuel at the time.
I’m surprised they actually modeled the turret interior. I haven’t really done any of this before, but I just assumed it was hollow shell, like the M4 Sherman model my friend built and gifted to me, there only was the areas for the model crew to stand on for me.

.01"? I didn't have any wire that thin. I think the size I used portrayed the headsets just fine. One has to be realistic in what materials you use when making something this complex. Have you made this model? I'm curious if you've taken into account the thickness of the etching solution and paint when you plan this project for yourself. When dealing with such a small scale, even the thickness of layers of paint can make one's measurements inaccurate and ruin the entire model!
I don't know I keep my engine looking new in a 20 year old vehicle yes it still looks new because I wash it
I don't think the crew in these had much time to wash down the engine though. Not quite the same as a civilian vehicle my friend.
The turret inside had no stuff as they went flying about when receiving hits like pieces of shrapnel.
One Ammo bin under floor is actually a storage bin.
RFM refuses to fix their inaccuracies despite years of Tigers. They added engine detail (after charging for them as separate parts - shame on them)
The turret rods you fitted look good but one of them will make the gunner very uncomfortable as it cuts across where he sits. You fit it in the wrong place

Commendable attention to detail, accuracy and realism. BUT then at 4:59 you replicate cast texture on the hull and turret interior. Problem with that given that the steel was NOT cast. It was welded rolled steel, and if you look at photos of the actual beast (like 131 at The Tank Museum at Bovington…plenty of pictures and interior video), the surface is smooth. Thus in your penchant for accuracy, the texture that you added was way over the top. It’s your model, so that’s your prerogative as you are building for your satisfaction. But as an IPMS competition judge, if this was entered in competition I would be raising an eyebrow at that and pondering my score sheet. Also, you made the comment, in effect, of “same steel, same texture” throughout the tank…but then the texture was only selectively applied. Following your theory, why wouldn’t it be on the top of the sponsons, on the bulkheads, etc. if it was the same steel? If you are going to do a technique, consistency of technique scores or removes points. At 7:09 you say “ Look at these beautiful textures. You’re always going to see me do this…”. Yeah. The real subject was never like that. “Always” doing it (to me and some other judges) is incorrect. Research the subject. If there was a lot of cast texture and the kit is lacking it, sure, add it. Now this nitpicking is overwhelmed by the overall quality of your build, but the feedback is well intended and yours to consider or reject.

Interior color is not that color its buff white on red brown primer . As the ammo loading area of main gun is beret green. 😢 better do more research

There’s plenty of information about tank interior colours available on line and you have used the colours of an early Tiger 1 on what is clearly a late version.
Your work is excellent but if you are after realism then getting the colour right is rather important especially if you are going to post a video showing others how to do it.
