A few points:
1. Green bark is the ideal, but old bark can be used as well. Hot water makes the bark flexible - just don't use burning hot water, it will damage the bark.
2. The ideal is to use a single strip for wrapping around the entire sheath - but as I show in the video is it possible to use multiple piece of bark strips for the wrap, friction will keep it together.
3. You is not limited to use only birch bark - you can use bark from a lot of other trees as well example willow.
4. Birch bark sheaths is common/was common in Finland and just in general in the north. One sheath can last many years.

Not having many birch trees that I can cut up here in New Zealand, I make these out of waste cardboard. They're very tight-fitting and durable.
I find it amazing that the bark does not break later when it is dry.
It always looks so easy when you make such a Thing.

Thanks. Mainly do I just love axes and some of the axes is more or less job specific. Secondary is using different axes an easy way to get some variation in the videos.
I know this question maybe sound silly cuz I see that u know your stuff when camping , but do feel u can survive out in the wilderness if things would get horribly bad with civilization ? I mean I have not seen u hunt for food on your videos .. of course for the moment there is no need praise the Lord ...as for me well I'm a senior citizen and it would really be hard to run and hide and survive the elements of the wild ...☹️ Good to know maybe others would care for the older people 😉 ... thank u for letting me sharing my thoughts with you ❤️

Have never seen this done before and it is fascinating . Are oils or animal fat needed to preserve a birch bark sheath ? Thanks again Rune for the lesson .
Thanks. No. Birch bark contains tar so it's perfectly self preserving - last over 100 years in the north as the waterproof layer on roofing in the north. It can dry out more than ideal, but it's just a matter of adding water to it - it will naturally happens just by using the tool in a a wet forrest/in light rain from time to time. The sheath is so fast to make so traditional and just still, do you just replace it with new bark instead of doing maintenance - but do last at least a few years with on problem.
