In this video I am making and fitting an axe handle from seasoned ash wood to an amazing viking axe head replica by my good friend and master blacksmith Kim Holm Andresen (The Dragon Smith). I do this with very simple tools, no measurements or guide lines and also craft a wooden sheath for the axe inspired by many finds like this from the viking age. I like my axe handles to have a slight curve especially for smaller carving axes like this one. Making the handle from a branch is not optimal cause the pith of the wood will be in the center of the handle. But it was easy to bring in my luggage from Denmark to Spain where the video is shot. It would be better to use a small radially split log with better fiber orientation and strengt. But this will do for a smaller carving axe so it will be ok.
Kims blacksmithing skills are out of this world. The quality of the metals, the forging, the edges and the sharpness is outstanding. If anybody is looking for hand forged highest quality tools i would never hesitate to recoomend him and his work.

    Very good my friend.
Should try it, mine are all from leather.
Once I did it from wood but just for the blade part.
    Stay safe.

Have you done anything to season and protect your handle? E.g. scorched or added linseed oil etc?

I made this while i the north of Spain so i used a few drops of olive oil. I normally just use a little bit of linseed oil or birch tar oil. Most of the times my axes and tools live indoors in a toolbox nice and dry so I find that I dont need much protection for the wood.
