Dude you said you were worried that it wasn't to terrible. Well I found this the only tutorial I could see logical steps. All the other ones on face shading were these same use 4 color the whatever pallette then they unlike you did not paint in a logical way. Their way was guady shapes you couldn't even tell it was the same sketch at all. You though built up step by step and it was skillful but also simplistic and your explainations are super clear on the intent with the light and dark colors while they were mixing the colors you showed how changing hues slightly and a bit lighter or darker brings the skin to life. I've been trying to figure this out for 10 years and they confused me but your's was simplicity and ingenius at once and no guessing colors just move a bit here and there and you are done. So that blue schadow underneath the chin is misleading and WRONG. Considering the bounced lights from the hair would be correct. Now what would happen if the environment and the sky would turn all warm? Good artist bad instructions @4:50 this is the same thing again. Imagine a studio or empty space for that matter; how would you Schade wenn u have one single light and ABSOLUTELY no bounce light? U guessed it: YOU JUST MAKE YOUR COLORS DARKER. I suggest do as much as your time and schedule allows. Don't stress yourself because that'll just make it harder. Remember to have fun and just give your best :)
Nice tutorial, I like the idea of using cool shadows too but what I leaned from photo studies is that the cool color of the shadows are caused by the ambient light color (might be the sky) which reflects on an object and the ambient light is more prominent over the shadows because the area is not affected from the direct light (sunlight) So I think it would be better to use a cool colored background for it to make more sense, or turn down the saturation a bit more on the shadow color. Not complaining here, you get to make decisions for your own piece and it looks good anyway
You're correct, the environment does heavily influence the colors. Bounce light is really important to factor in but I didn't want to make this tutorial too complicated and long. Perhaps I will create another video in which I will explain some more advanced lighting scenarios. Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it! :)

No matter what your media or painting style is, you get some information from this video to help you
I'm really happy I found your channel - I just got into digital painting and i've been struggling more than I expected, but your videos really help me understand the process and the mechanics behind the art. Thank you :)
What brushes do you use?? Also, I love your work so much, keep up the good work :)
Most of them are custom brushes (link is in the description of this video) but I could probably create the same piece with just the standard brushes that come with most programs. :)
@@ericanthonyj thank you so much, will definitely check out!
This was a good tutorial and as a fan of your style it was both interesting and helpful, however, I think you could have went into more detail on your process of picking the value of different colors and staying consistent with them. Keep up the vid bro 👌👌👌

When you lay down the "life" giving colors how do you blend them out to make them so smooth?
Do you use a specific brush?
use soft airbrush thats what they commonly use.
On Photoshop there's the mixer brush tool. It helps to blend colors.
*attempts to make face realistic. 20 minutes in and my hand feels like it's gunna fall off* yup nope not for me 😂
Thank you so much very helpful
I don't know if you're giving a life lesson or digital art lesson, but anyways you're advice was so clear and accurate. Keep up the freat work
