I have literally been trying to paint skin all week and NONE of them looked “right.” I just couldn’t put my finger on why. This shit right here is what I was missing, so THANK YOU.
I’m just getting into digital art and colors have always been a mystery to me. This video is so awesome at allowing me to wrap my head around things that felt so complex. Thanks for making this!!
@@savannah5731 Sorry for the late reply! I have been jumping between Sketchbook, Adobe Fresco and Procreate. They each seem to have their own pros/cons. Sketchbook for product sketches, Fresco for realistic paint and vector work. Procreate for everything else. I think I prefer Procreate the most; it feels most intuitive with the iPad, but it doesn't have some disappointing limitations like lack of vector and artboard boundary restrictions ✌️
You’re THE ONLY PERSON who I actually learn from, other art channels went WAY too fast or gave vague explanations and instructions. I’m actually here taking notes :3
As a Blender modeler, I very much approve of this video and the explanation of subsurface. The material that best represents subsurface scattering is probably wax, hence why places like Madam Tussaud's uses wax for their celebrities
I really appreciate that you included all sorts of different skin colors and even took the time to explain the difference between darker and lighter skin tones! It's a refreshing change of pace from things like "How to paint hair!" and it's only straight/slightly wavy hair, etc
I have heard of sub-surface scattering and refracted light before, but it made my head hurt when I saw explanations of it and why they were important for artists. With this video, I was able to understand those factors a lot more clearly, and how to use them in the future when I add color to my digital and painted works. I even learned a lot of new things, like specularity. I’m really glad I came across this video! Good job and thank you, Lucas!
I just watched a TH-cam video where they said just extract a color pallette from a photo, but you went hella in depth on this going scientific with it. You even broke a misconception I had about cool shadows/warm light that was hindering my ability to select the right colors. Thank you so much! I feel a lot more comfortable selecting colors and being creative with them instead of feeling restricted.
I know this is a year old but I just gotta say, you are a lifesaver. Every other tutorial on skin is way too vague and simple for my tendency to want to break things down into components. They don’t provide the easily, widely applicable structure that this does. Again, thank you so, so much for this.
I basically wanted to design a cover for my book. I was feeling so frustrated about it until I saw this video. Because I only know to do monochrome art. I've never colored. Now I'm really enlightened. When I taught myself art, I observed every object around me in light and shade. But I would have never broken away my fear to paint in color and would have never got the idea unless I saw this video. Thank you again!
Omggg ive been looking for this type of tutorial for a lifetime and could never find one. But yours is a MASTERPIECE!! It includes everything possible, with all the variations that a skin (+it's environment) could have... and that help us so so much!!! Muchísimas gracias Lucas!!!
I learned so much more in the video than any any paid curriculum. 😭 Tysm for making this video and sharing the basics in such an easy way to understand 🌼🥺
I have watched literally dozens of videos about skin coloring and this video so far is one of the best. He actually gets straight to point towards the important, most valuable information
You broke this down so well and provided such fantastic explanations on how the light and shadows are actually effecting each other. I’m more amazed with how you carefully and slowly showed us your process of applying this theory instead of just speeding through it. Great work!
the theory of using cool shadows is not based on comparing warm vs cool but because thge flesh is naturally warm and the skin without natural light becomes dull which means you mix a complimentary which is usually a cool color. Painters exagerate the cool color to interact with a warm color which enhances it. It is a suggestion, yet it's a suggestion that makes alot of sense. It will also stop your portraits from looking monochromatic.
I can’t even believe how helpful this video was! I’ve watched so many videos now on colouring skin in digital art and this is literally only one that has made any sense to me! Thank you so much for going so in-depth and explaining so well!
Yay your back! Don’t need this tutorial right now because I’m working on my drawing right now but it will definitely be useful in the future! Can wait for more videos to come!!!
OMG! Such a great job with this tutorial!!! Thanks for sharing this. I've been watching a bunch of other how to paint skin videos and when I heard how you began this video I knew it's something else. GG! 10x again
C curve saturation for shading. It is that alone that answer more for me than even the best color theory videos I have seen so far. So many explain it in a way that just doesn't click but this filled in the gaps of my amateur coloring
This is the single most useful and comprehensive video on painting skin I have ever watched. I was having so much difficulty with the colours. Thank you for explaining everything in detail!!
This is a fantastic lesson, Lucas. I've returned to it a couple of times to make sure it sinks in. I didn't quite get it the first time. Thank you for sharing with us!
Thanks for this! I started drawing a while back but if a little earlier I would've just learned from the earlier TH-camr vids and have totally missed yours. This is a huge speed learning I get from you. I'm relearning to draw and paint at 41 and I don't have much time to take it easy.
Hi Laura, thank you very much for such a nice comment, I’m very happy that the video was useful to you, and props for taking the challenge of relearning! It takes a ton of courage to do so 🙏
This was great!! I needed a refresher on where to add reds and purples but when creating my own light sources adding where I think those go was off but this helped a lot with how and why those colors would show up in areas. THANK YOU!
This is the first time I’ve ever seen a Slavic, especially a Slovenian artist (I’m only half, but still!) And this video helped me so much, WHERE HAVE BEEN ALL MY LIFE?! (Sorry if my English sounds weird, I only learned recently)
in the sorolla piece at 18:45 is a perfect example of your point that shadows are the result of the color of the fill light. The shadow of her elbow is blue like the sky but the shadow of her umbrella is green like the grass
Omg! That is amazing!!! Didn't knew about c-curve etc. 😳✨until now. Out of the tutorials i've watched you're the only one who shares about these stuff.. 😍
Thank you so much! Whenever I’ve tried painting skin I never quite figured out how to choose the colours so it looks right, I only managed to do it by picking them off of a reference image or by using a lot of different layers. With this tutorial it suddenly makes so much sense, I can’t thank you enough!
If only color theory on light and shadow was taught like this in school .Oh dear are you for real? This is the best video on the topic. The sub surface effect. Moving towards "Soft surface scattering" Thank you so much You are awesome
Finally! i found an artist who knows that warm light doesn’t always equal cool shadows and vise versa. I would hear that all the time in videos like it was a fact but i knew it had to be wrong at least a little cause it didn’t make sense like 40% of the time. Thanks for explaining
