There's really no more simpler way to describe it. First flats, then shadows to describe shapes, lit areas to describe volume and finally highlights to make it pop. Got it!
@@helenaostojic9237 for me it's like a rollercoaster, going between pride and joy and then quickly descending into heavy inner criticism. Happy to improve, yet disappointed I'm still not at the level I want to be and can see others at.
I really like how around the 15 min mark you mentioned that if you made it this far, you can be proud of yourself. That was really encouraging, and it makes it seem a little less scary because I don't feel like I have to achieve your end result in order to be proud of my work. Thank you :)
What I learned for the skin: 1) *[Layer1]* Flat color 2) Pick the flat color y move it on the color wheel a little bit to the red/pink and make it a little darker and more saturated 3) *[Layer2]* Paint the shadows looking at the reference 4) *[Layer3]* Pick an even darker color for round 2 of shadows and paint the darkest spots from the reference 5) Merge the two layers of shadows 6) Blend it a bit with a blender brush, but not too much, you don't want to get rid of the forms you've just created 7) Pick flat color and move it a little bit to the yellow and make it brighter 8) *[Layer4]* Do the lighting looking at the reference (do it like you hate it: fast, not stopping and not overthinking), it shouldn't take a long time 9) Blend it a bit 10) You did it :D
I feel like a lot of tutorials focus on doing different "short cut" techniques that the artists personally find easy. But they end up being confusing because of the amount of steps you need to take and how specific the techniques are. You kept this really simple and it's just layering. Thankyou so much for this. Made me feel less confused

This was an INCREDIBLE guide. I’m still brand new to art at all, and this explained it so easily. It really clicked for me and I’m already seeing improvement in my work! Thank you so much for making this !
thank you so, very much for this real-time tutorial!! it's one of the few times i've seen someone upload without an incomprehensible time-lapse (as a total beginner at painting) and you even showed us how to avoid murky shadows!! 😭✨
I think this was one of your most helpful, insightful, and easy to follow tutorials that actually showed us what you were doing along with the image, incredible work and thanks so much for sharing your process and efforts with us Eric!
Eric your content is golden! I started watching a while back and instantly became a fan! you're a big inspiration for me and I try to learn from you as much as I can. Please keep the incredible content and thank you!
Seriously, your tutorials are amazing. I think I have watched every single one. So far, you are one of very few people that actually introduce us to your workflow and go through things slowly for us that may be having a hard time on this subject. I overthink EVERYTHING, and spend an exceddingly amount of time on each project. By you breaking everything down into simpler terms and steps, I am confident that I can overcome my obsession with taking way too long to finish one project. Thanks for the time you spent to put this together. We appreciate it so much. Can you add some hair and clothes specific tutorials?
I've already followed the video for sketching and sketched one which turned out soooo good. now I'm gonna shade it following this tutorial. wish me luck!

if you want to try painting hair, here's some tips, first: make a blob for the shape of the hair until you're happy with it. second: change to a darker color of the hair, and shade lightly third: use a even darker color of the hair and fill in the darkest shadows, {usually inside the light shadows} forth: put in highlights with some a light yellow, (since yellow is the color of the sun and it makes the drawing pop) Fifth: if you have a hair texture brush, make some strands, hope this helps, and btw, instead of the air brush try using a round brush
I personally love to use the inking brush or the real oils brush but make it completely dry and are used to scratch blend to blend everything out make it look natural
Thank you so so so much. Painting seems very scary, especially skin, but this was very simple to understand, its incredibly helpful, so thank you so much for this video!!! You are a life savior
Hey so I've watched this video multiple times and when it comes to the light section I still struggle. When I "take it into the yellows" there's seems to be such a small window in which the colors work and my lighter skin sections seem to be so out of hue that it just looks awful. What is the best way to get the right hue and the right brightness. Color is a huge struggle for me so I'm just looking for some expert tips
Mortal Komment I normally color pick directly from the image while practicing. That way you can go into the color wheel and see where the color lies on it so you can get a better idea of where to pick colors from later on. Definitely don’t color pick directly from images all the time, but it’s good practice to get used to digital painting. Having such a large degree of colors to choose from can be intimidating and really make your painting muddy if you aren’t careful.
Mortal Komment There could be a few issues. 1. Light isn’t always yellow, it’s just a recommendation as it’s usually the most common color of light. The color of light depends on the color scheme of your portrait. For example, if your portrait is mainly comprised of blues and purples, you could use a pink or green light to complement the rest of the scheme. However, if your portrait uses realistic colors and takes place in a day setting, yellow should be the default light color. 2. Your skin base might be too bright. If your skin base is too bright, placing a light yellow color on top of it would make it look gaudy given how the skin base already looks like a light source. Hope that helps. Painting is different for everyone.
I always seem to make the bright too strong and the shadows too deep. But if the light source is stronger, do you color brighter in the lights? And darker in the darks?
Ima be dead serious and say that this process fucking helped me a fuck ton 💜 I can really see a major difference with past paintings omg this is amazing

“Don’t use the airbrush” tHeN wHaT dO I uSe?!? 😫 my struggle is definitely shading and painting the hair and face
Air brush for blushes, but use different pens!! Try out different textures!! It really makes drawings pop and become more alive
Something with a harder edge and preferably more texture.

forth: put in highlights with some a light yellow, (since yellow is the color of the sun and it makes the drawing pop)
Fifth: if you have a hair texture brush, make some strands,
hope this helps, and btw, instead of the air brush try using a round brush
