I love your painterly work so much, really appreciate showing your workflow
of course!!!!
Hey Ross, i have been following you for about 6 years maybe. I just wanna say, thank you for coming back and making these videos.
I am not much of an artist, but I used draw following your tutorials back in the Covid days. I remember you probably used to upload on Wednesdays, and I would jump right back to drawing every time you upload new videos.
You gave me inspirations for drawing as well as for living a life. I loved how positive you are and always spreading happy thoughts through your videos. It gave me motivation to not go in any dark spaces. I live in Bangladesh, not sure if you'd notice this comment. I hope to get a chance to meet you in the future.
Thank you so much for keeping us involved with your art journey.

Since then, I've been forcing myself to learn the fundamentals and do everything by hand 😢

Hy, Ross!
THANK YOU ROSS!!!! Super appreciate you breaking this technique down in an easy to learn quick video! Defintetly would love to see the photobash techniques too.
I think you put the wrong brush settings on your clippers😅 Those strokes are a bit artsy.
I can't judge because I gave myself 2 haircuts. Lol
What a coincidence.. I had also cut my own hair first time just a few days ago
Amazing video Ross! Thanks for sharing your tips with us - really helpful and I'm going to for sure try these out in my next piece!
one thing I love when doing backgrounds to make em more painterly is to use a square brush. For some reason I just vibe with that. I'll have to try to jam these into my memory bank. :D
Oh my goodness😍😍😍
The Color Dodge King has struck again😁😁😁
I shall absorb everything now😳😳😳
* 10 FORMERLY secret painterly techniques
These are really good tips, thanks bro! I like B the best, however A would work well as a poster or cover.
Dang, 2.5 :,)
But that profile one (B) surely looks like a 10 to me. Really brings the character vibe out. It's almost as if we're there, closely observing. ♥
I went bald over the past couple of years so I finally decided to just shave it off. Razorblade style. Silky smooth like a new fresh tablet... ☺ Feels so good.
I like A, B and C dude. All 3 of them give off a different vibe.
Lol Barber :D
Thanks for the sick video.
I MISSED SO MUCH YOUR VIDEOS AAAAAAAAA
Wishing the best to you on this new book journey!
This video was mindblowing!! and yes! Photobashing tutorial would be amazing!
First
Hi new to your channel. I’ve watched so many of these kind of videos and this is the first that I’ve felt actually gives good useful tips. I feel like not enough artists understand what a huge difference blending modes can make to a piece of work. Love your enthusiasm too. Thanks for sharing.
Something about a video like this is so helpful - seeing it work into a full process. I've been aware of these tools for a long time, but never knew how to work them into a painting process beyond the earliest stages. Seeing how you employ each one visually helps it make sense for me. Great tutorial Ross! :)
You are soo sweet for sharing all these techniques! They are definitely life saviours! ♡
B feels more dynamic. And the imagery is clearly on the tree where as in A i couldn't tell if it was floating in front or not.
Additionally B has a much more interesting composition. You still have him in the middle, but now we also have the rule of thirds (vertically) with the tree and not just from the ground plane
Thanks for this, I'm not skilled enough yet but I'll for sure come back to this many times :3
Also all 3 versions are awesome, but if I had to pick one, I'd pick B :3
11:03 Tbh I reeeeaaally love look C out of the three. Obviously each one of them are a masterpiece on their own- but the third…oh gosh the way it’s so captivating. Perhaps it the atmosphere that you captured so well? Like the rendering of the foreground that leads the eye to the subject in the middle. THE LIGHTING!! And I personally think the lesser details on the tree gives that depth, its back in space without having that “too much blur” look.
Still looking at how well you are able to do color notes on different parts of the painting and making it feel so alive😭 this is so specific but that hint of blue (or maybe it’s a cool gray?) that is on the Lower left side of the tree, is so satisfying to look at. You’re so amazing😭
Really appreciate the tutorial ! It’s a really smart technique and it’s definitely much easier than just working on the painting straight away. Really love your work and it’s been part of my inspiration in my own art career ^^ welcome back Ross :P👍
I really love option B it really seems like hes thinking about something and the pose makes a very nice silhouette (I love triangles) :)
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS THANK YOU ROSS
Hi Ross! Have you considered doing live streaming? No need for commentary, just painting along studies and some chill music ☺️
I love how you make videos. They're always really polished and fun to watch, like they're really filled with love, and they also teach techniques that I haven't seen anyone else use or talk about before... maybe I just need to be an artist for longer...
Also, I personally like B the best. The composition of Hollow being turned away from the viewer along with his posture really evokes that feeling of not being good enough and unable to look one's audience in the eye. Plus, I think B does the best at showing that the sketchiness is actually on the tree and not just wisps or spirits or something emanating from Hollow.
WOW! 🤯🤩!!! (Your enthusiasm is infectious, but the video editing is just super cool as always!!)
Oooooh…~ I liek B… the side profile hits me, too.
Whoaaa! This is amazing. Great tips too! I never thought to use cloud brush for light. Gonna give that a try!
Love B and C!
This is really helpfull,i feel like i can use this technique on my next illust, thank you ross!! your working flow is amazing i really love the making process luv luv╰(*°▽°*)╯
All of them has their own charms, but the dynamic perspective of 3 makes it pop out even more I think. So will choose Nr.3 :D
I’m so happy you’re back into the swing of things making new video Ross!! I’m still glad you too time to take care of yourself!! Can’t wait for more amazing video to watch that make me super happy!! 💕✨
I'm liking B. Thanks for the great tips. Awesome to see you back on TH-cam!
you need a computer with 4 GPUS to use that kind of brush, in that size, with scattering and almost no spacing in a big canvas like that without the PC exploding on photoshop.
I really appreciate you sharing the techniques most people won’t. In reference to the nervous laughter joke, I doubt people will start ripping you off just cause they learned some new techniques. It’ll manifest in new weird ways that are probably unexpected and really cool❤
I can paint traditionally and wondered what wrong i was doing in digital art. The video was very helpful for creating the texture effects. thank you for sharing.
I love this new style of video, a lot more relaxed and a bit of insight on what happens behind the curtain
As for using the eraser as a brush - I use it all the time. In Krita all brushes have an eraser mode so I can just press E and whichever brush I was using starts erasing while keeping all its other settings (brush tip, size, reacting to pressure etc). I don't know how it works in other software, but at least Drawpile has the same thing (with a different keyboard shortcut though. Pressing E will change it to a basic eraser).
As someone who watches you from 2016, I'm so happy you're back 🩷 Your works still inspire till this day.
Wowww I love those pieces, they are awsome ! Love the different versions, I hope we will see more of it in the future (my favorite is C !!). I'm really happy you are doing videos again, I missed them ❤
-Love from a french artist
Don't give up on cutting your own hair just yet! I've been cutting my own hair since I was 14. Try, try, again! It's worth it.
Great video. Amazing talent. Master, what do you prefer this pictoric technique or line art?.
i've been struggling so hard with making backgrounds so tysm for sharing these tips!!
i definitely think i like b the best because of how Hollow stands out against the bright background, it adds some really nice contrast. he looks so cool!
I really like drawing B because the side profile just fits. I like how I can see the piano better as well!! 🎹🍀✨
Really like version B, the side profile, the pose, the majestic tree, so good!!
Está ilustración me gustó mucho! Sobretodo la segunda me llamó la atención. Me da vibras de Shadow of the colossus o ICO. De mis juegos favoritos ☺️💖
really nice, do more photobashing videos :)
My favourite is B. I really like the contrast and how the figure stands out. Thanks for the handy tips!
Whoah I'm using Paint Tool Sai for my draws and paint but i think i will move to Photoshop :O
I really like the composition of B, as well as the story being told in A. The composition of B guides my eyes through the image in a pleasant way and my attention is drawn towards the character and what he's doing. In A, the drawings and objects hanging from the tree are more in focus and seem connected to the character since he's in the center of it all. A, makes me wonder more about the character, his expression, and the tree. B, draws my attention more towards the world and asks what the character is doing there.
ROSS!!! Happy to see you shine, can't wait to watch the video. Now rest up!
Thank you so much!! I do some of these already, but seeing them in your process truly helped me see how useful they are
All three are good it simply depends on what message you want to convey or what you want the people to look at. So first one emphasizes the character the second puts focus on the BG aka the tree and the last one showcases the action or mood of the scene.
I would looovve a photobashing video!! I just started doing it, but don't know enough about it and how to best incorporate it x)
It's so epic to see that even the already-established artists still continuing to develop their artistic style and voice with new techniques and experimentation. this video was a really nice surprise, we've all missed you! Continue to take the time you need.
yes amazing!! so happy you're back, cant wait to see all your projects you inspire me!!
YES!!! PLEASE MAKE A PHOTO BASHING TUTORIAL
Welcome back and thanks for all these tips, that’s really helpful 👏🏼🙌🏻🤩
I’m more interested in c because it give our character a peaceful feel to the environment while giving himself a way to express his feelings of being peaceful
Thank you ross very helpful!!😊😊🙌🏾🙌🏾❤️
Love seeing videos from you again Ross!!! You are so loved! Also so awesome to see these tips from you ☺️
I like the vibe of B and C
Your videos are really awesome and really enjoying to watch
Love the A & B version !! Also would love a photobashing tutorial :)
Personally prefer C. Thank you for the tips!!!
I think he seems to sound more gay after the break, what does this dude was depressed about? he got a brand new expensive cintiq pro, lol
Thank you so much Ross, you are the best❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🥺🥺🥺🥺
you are a true legend for this!
thanks!
B.
At least you still have your hair after trying to cut it yourself.
