    My gun of choice is a Remington model 870 Wingmaster 20 gauge slug barrel with rifle sights . It's great within 100 yards.

    A 30-30 deer kill at 30 yards does minimal meat damage.
    A 30-06 150 gr cruising at 2910 deer kill at 30 yards will blow a deer shoulder to pieces and damage a good bit of meat. That’s another attribute of a good brush gun, minimal meat damage at close range

    Tested .308 shooting thru palmettos anything flying over 2000fps under 200 grain was wildly inaccurate against brush. 45-70 450BM 35REM were hands down better performing. .308 wasn't the only round tested either. .270 7mm mag .300 WIN MAG. 30-06 my findings are speed kills thru brush. Idk you try it and let us see your results

    • @decklanburkhart8113
      @decklanburkhart8113  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do agree that the 45-70 and others will be superior then 308. However did you test the round nose bullets in 308? You can't find them loaded you have to load them. As factories only load spire point bullets really anymore. The round nose that are almost flat definitely are better then the normal factory rounds that you can find today for the 308

    Great video. Thanks for sharing.
    My choice would be a 44 magnum lever action. Have a Marlin 1894 SBL-gorgeous, on point, and smooth as butter. Also a Henry Model X in 44 mag with a red dot, factory threaded for a suppressor outside brush or in a sling. Both also make great home defense tools.

  • @evanwindom3265

    You can get a 16.5" barrel without a bolt, a scope, or being chambered in .308. I don't think I'll ever think of .308 as a "very good" brush gun. I think I'd rather have a red dot than a 4x on a close-in rifle, but that's completely a personal choice. I strongly agree that a Model 94 with a peep is a great option. It's light, quick, and incredibly intuitive to shoot at shorter ranges. It's also a great choice if you're hiking or horseback riding on the way in and need to keep the rifle in a scabbard. All-around solid choice. Where I grew up, you could just about count on finding a box of .30-30, .270 and .30-06 in about half the gas stations along the highway, too. At the end of the day, though, I think it depends on what you LIKE and are comfortable with. For a lot of people, it may not make financial sense to buy a rifle solely for use in brushy environments, so there's that consideration as well.

    I've used shotguns to take deer most of my hunting life, .410 being one of them. A .410 slug is a great brush round without a lot of recoil. The 30-30 is a great brush gun that is good out to 200 yards with a good 4x scope. The 12 gauge is my favorite simply because of the knock down power, one shot is usually all it takes and I've never had to track a deer after being shot with it. Thanks for the video.

    Call me old school. My go to woods rifle is a Remington model 600 in 308 Winchester. Running 180 grain round nose, or a Remington model 673 in 350 rem mag w/ 250 round nose for bigger game. You give. Good choices and 20 g can be helpful to those who are recoil sensitive. The 30/30, 32 special, 35 Remington great records as woods rifles. So have 44 mags, and 357 mags, in rifle/ handgun combo's there by using the same ammo...also you have just handguns that for some are with practice, just the ticket.
    Then there are bow and arrow shooters, crossbows,...Thanks again for your time.

      @@jasonsimone3523 Thanks for the comment. The 350 Rem. Mag. Is an often over looked caliber.
      Why, Remington Model 600 was way ahead of it's time, and kicked like a mule in 308 win, and when you went bigger in caliber, painful for many. Model Seven, M 700's and M 673 do have more weight and better stocks. Therefore, easier on the shorter.

      Awesome! I do think that the 300 wsm is a little overrated that is my opinion though. Either way it's a awesome gun! Great carry and/or camp gun I love it. I wish it had some iron sights but the 2-7 scope on mine it's ok for now lol

    • @johnthurman1854
      @johnthurman1854 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@decklanburkhart8113 .......Given the same barrel length, the 300 WSM runs on average 50 to 75 fps slower than the 300 Win. In the field, that is really nothing. Imo, given the shorter action and less overall rifle weight, the 300 WSM might be under rated by many. From my 16.5" barrel, 66.5 gr of RL17 gets me an average of 2917 fps using a 180 gr Hornady with a 1 moa and less accuracy. My Frontier has been bedded and floated.

    Like your list. Here is mine.
    -Browning model 92 lever in 44 mag. The benefit is it holds more rounds then the 30-30.
    -Remington 783 threaded 16.5" heavy barrel in 308. Great "truck gun" or "camp gun". Inexpensive, accurate, never worry about scratching your gun. (You can also club the deer to death with it if you run out of rounds. lol)
    -Valmet 412 (double barrel) in 12 Guage over 308. you can buy an internal 22lr barrel for the 12 Guage then you can shoot anything. Quick detach scope mount, and iron sights. This gun can break in two to fit in your back pack.

    • @decklanburkhart8113
      @decklanburkhart8113  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely agree with the model 92 in 44 mag, my grandad swears by his 357 mag lever gun. He loves it. I think your 783 idea can be used for a few different "cheaper rugged guns" such as the ruger american, or the savage axis. Just getting a good shooting gun that you don't have to really worry about is the big factor. Also I like the idea of 12 gauge on top and a rifle caliber under on a O/U they are just so expensive!

    • @fabulousoffroaddesigns5080
      @fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@decklanburkhart8113 the 783 HB is a really compelling gun though. It's hard to find a 16.5" heavy barrel , bolt action gun that shoots 1 moa, is threaded for a brake/compensator and comes with a one piece picatiny rail at that price. The Ruger and the Savage may be slightly more accurate but they don't offer the features. Even the trigger is quite good for a woods gun.

      @@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 I do have to agree to get the american package with those features you have to get the predator model which is an upcharge. But even with that it's not a heavy barrel. It's a heavier barrel than the american but not a true heavy barrel they both come with solid triggers from the factory the Americans is adjustable too. I really like the rem 700 tactical 308s! But they are in a different price class!

      @@decklanburkhart8113 true it's not a full Bull Barrel (more sandero) which means it's 6.5 lbs before accessories. It looks good with a comp on it and would be a nice set up in a chassis.

    I currently own 2 Ruger Compact's in 308. They are walnut blue. I have also owned in the past a Mk1 M77 compact in 308. I regret selling it. I also had a Mk2 stainless laminate compact in 308.
    All these rifles have/had a Leupold 4x33 fixed scope. You can't buy that model scope anymore.
    I live and work in the forest and I haven't ever killed anything over 100m. The Ruger Compact 308 is a great work tool and hunting rifle.

    Hate to be this guy, but a .308 isn’t a brush gun in any way,shape, or form. 30-30, 45/70 etc are good brush guns because they’re round nose bullets and they just bust through brush as opposed to a normal bullet, which often deflects upon impact. Just because the rifle is short and easy to maneuver doesn’t mean it’s a brush gun.

      You ever reload? Most likely you haven't but you can reload round nose bullets into 308 cartridges. If you go to store to buy ammo, which I'm guess you do... You can only find soft points normally which will deflect.

    Stopped watching when you said "a brush gun does not necessarily mean a heavier bullet." The heavier, slower bullet is EXACTLY why brush guns are better at deflecting small branches. Please do your research.
    Also, please practice speaking clearly and concisely, with confidence. Speaking slowly with lots of place holders (um, uh) is the quickest way to lose your audience's attention.
    Best of luck to you!
