    We desperately need more support for Oculink or something like it.
    I think a lot of people would embrace more laptops and SFF if they had a powerful "dock" for when they get to their destination/home.

    • @kbhasi
      @kbhasi ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree, as I ended up finding that I was better off with a custom desktop PC as a primary device and small laptop as secondary, then access the former from the latter using one of a few remote access apps.

    • @colinmcbottle
      @colinmcbottle ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We just need bandwidth updates on the USB spec.
      USB4.0 was a good change in that regard, as it demanded 4 lanes for thunderbolt. Before it was device dependant.
      We just need USB5.0 to 2x the bandwdith, USB6 2x again, etc etc. Just keep up within reason with PCI-E lane increases.
      Propietay connectors are not the way to go. eGPU is already a mess even with the standarized usb-c connection because of 2/4 lanes thing I mentioned on TB

    • @dreadlord9257
      @dreadlord9257 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@colinmcbottle USB has almost never kept pace with anything. Once we go to PCIE5, then PCIE6 it will be the same problem all over.
      That's why I suggested something like ePCIE, sort of what eSata did for Sata back when that was the hdd norm.
      I do agree, it cannot/should not be proprietary.

      Egpus also need to become sensibly priced. If they were sensibly priced, more ppl would ebrace the 'dock' experience.

      Desktops are already a minority of sales but they don't take much more space (measured in square centimeters, not esthetic desire for minimalist art but that's valid too) than another complete, more powerful machine. Owning at least two PCs so one has instant backup is wise.

    This is an eye-opener... Connectivity is finally catching up to what these newer GPUs require. I would love to see the day when modular is the norm like this and the big boys release GPUs with a "modular" option. Thanks for the vid!

    400$ for the minisform , 600$ for the egpu , that's a 1000$ , for the same price you can build a 12400f 6700xt Mini ITX pc that can preform a lot better and has a good upgradability path as well.
    This is just a cute expensive toy

      If someone was looking at this setup, they would have their own reasons as to why. Some level of portability? Aesthetics (hide it away)? lots of other reasons. You're so narrow minded on the idea. Just because it isn't for you and you can't justify it for yourself, doesn't mean other people would have no reason to justify it for themselves. This is a much smarter solution, or just buy a laptop, which is what all these devices (including the miniPC) are using internally. At one time, it made sense to buy a NUC or miniPC since laptops with the same components cost twice as much. These days, you can buy a laptop less than a NUC (which is why Intel is getting out of the business). What aggravates me is the GPU manufacturers could make a small form factor discrete GPU that could easily fit in single PCIe slot on a minITX, but that is not where the money is. Also, companies like HP or Dell are no longer the leaders in defining standards with the prominence of Lenovo, ASUS, Acer and MSI crowding the field leaving sadly small Chinese companies to lead the way in this area, which are not always the best at innovation, hence the flurry of copycat portable gaming devices.

    If I'm going to replace my humongous gaming PC, it will be similar to this! Modularity is the future! This doesn't take that much space and you have the option to either use the eGPU or just the APU depending on what you're doing. I must say though that USB4 is such a big disappointment with the hype for it a while back. I have a USB4 eGPU dock too (Razer Chromax) and the performance sux. I'm more than willing to switch to Oculink or any similar tech that can actually take full advantage of the GPU as if it's directly connected to the mobo.
    That said, I would like GPD (or any decent tech company) to make an eGPU enclosure using Oculink that can fit massive GPUs easily and can use full fledge PSUs that are user-replaceable. I would like to fit my old 1080Ti or 2080Ti I still have in it. 🤤

Just upgrade one part without needing to expose motherboards and stuff. Absolutely amazing. Wanna keep an ancient gpu? Just keep upgrading the cpu til it outdoes the gpu. I see it baby. I dont think i would build my own personal computers anymore if it was broken down this way.

    Considering this is not available to anyone yet, I have to assume you received it to evaluate and promote. With that being said, with a retail price of $795.00 and the cost of the miniPC being at least $500, you are looking at spending $1300 for these two items. Connecting via USB4 is no match for Oculink which is only PCI gen 3 X4, while the RX 7600M is PCIe gen 4 X8 . As much as I love small form factor PCs, I don’t see how this would be better than spending the same amount, if not substantially less on a laptop with more memory and a RTX4060. Even better, you get a keyboard, monitor and battery system built in. If you don’t like that, find one of these laptops and pull out the laptop board and make a new case for it (like you did in a previous episode) and it will still be cheaper.
    These external video card systems only make sense when they are $200-$400 including GPU, or you are stuck with an older Mac mini or MacBook that is still running Intel iGPU. Even then, it almost makes more sense to just buy a PC if you need a discrete video card; which is the only way with newer Mx based Macs since you CAN’T USE Discrete GPUs.

    Just like proper mixing and matching for DIY desktop PC's, one should also match components on these tiny interconnectible micro pc's and this GPD G1 should always be connected via its Oculink port to native oculink port on the host device or via M.2 converter. Only use usb4 if oculink connection cannot be made. For everybody else that doesn't own a decently powerful micro pc that is compatible with GPD G1, just get a gaming laptop of similar or better specs ^_^ which im sure will cost cheaper and easier to lug around.

WIth that being said....would love to see you making a video, where combine the GPD G1 with the Intel NUC11 Enthusiast (Phantom Canyon) and the PCIe to OCCULUS LINK Adapter just to see how this GPU would scale with an 11th Gen Intel Core i7

    This is awesome! I would love to see this with a little beefier setup for the CPU side. I really need 64gb ram for what I do (live visuals via Resolume) and Thunderbolt 4 on the CPU device because I would need to connect an additional eGPU box for my Blackmagic Quad (capturing multiple external video sources simultaneously). Any suggestions?

    Mate your videos are top shelf! I’ve preordered the Framework 13 AMD 7840U which has 2x USB4. Do you expect I can use this eGPU and get similar results? Thanks for your effort in making these vids. Very enjoyable

    For mini pc if you going with a external gpu setup you are way better going Mini Itx. And actually owning a product that can be updated, it will be more powerful and cheaper at the expense of a little more space. External GPU setups are basically as big as a Mini ITX setup..

    I had been designing something like this for my laptop for awhile now...well, something very similar. Now I can just buy this or wait for other brands to take a stab at it. I still might build my own because i am cheap and would use some oem low power gpu. And if i build one, I would like it to "plug in" to my laptop as a module with no cables. I could even buy a used laptop chassis and use it to make one that looks like it was made specifically for my laptop.

    Are you sure the RAM in the specs is really correct stating it's LPDDR4X at 6400MT/s? I've never seen LPDDR4X clocked that high, it usually tops at 4266MT/s. Also, Ryzen 6800U doesn't have an integrated DDR4/LPDDR4 controller, but DDR5/LPDDR5 instead, so this ram may be LPDDR5x at 6400MT/s.

      @@LiLBitsDK It's pretty odd that GPD is sending out review units when they haven't even launched their crowdfunding campaign, and haven't told anyone how much the unit is going to cost. All of the coverage on this thing is recommending it as a viable option, and that viability is completely dependent on the price. Which I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess is quite high for a 7600M. We'll see.

      @JITISH1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thatsux0rz I could be wrong but I though Oculink was open source. I'm sure ETA mentioned it in one of the reviews for one of the GPD Devices.... I think it's industry more wanting to find their own ways of proprietry connectors to make consumers spend more. Like the XGm on the ROG Flow and ROG Ally, that really just seems like a way to close the eco-system. Else I am sure they could have easily used Oculink.
