    I agree with others on a second video showing a comparison between all three GPUs on this setup. I love mini PCs and travel with one, so the idea of having a Oculink native setup at home would be nice. It would also be nice to see a video running ChimeraOS on this setup with the GPD G1 or a higher end AMD GPU in one of your DIY Oculink docks.

      @@jonevansauthor I travel with a wireless keyboard/mouse and currently use a minisforum UM560XT 32GB/512GB SSD that I connect to the TV in the hotel room. Most hotel rooms use ethernet to feed their streaming devices now, so I just steal their HDMI and ethernet connection to plug into the mini pc. I have a company provided Macbook Pro for my day to day work so the mini pc is used for personal stuff. I use the mini pc for light gaming with some older titles that the onboard graphics will support, streaming, watching TH-cam, paying bills, etc..
      I'd love to have an Oculink dock at home with a higher end AMD graphics card in it that I can run 1440P using a mini PC like this one when I am not traveling. I may end up building a full blown PC in the end, but a mini PC setup like that would be an interesting project. I have been using higher end gaming laptops for years and I got tired of dragging the bulky things through airports when I travel.

    • @jonevansauthor

      USB 4 is capable of more than 40 gb but I realise that doesn't mean that it's available to us mortals yet. Obviously not much point having it in the eGPU at 80gbs+ if we can't then plug it in to the PC.

  • @jonevansauthor
    @jonevansauthor 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    An eGPU video/s would be great. Questions you could probably answer that I definitely can't.
    * Will a 4090 saturate Occulink or USB or is it sufficient for all current gen cards?
    * If you get the new 4060 that has a built in NVME slot, will the PC be able to access that disk over Occulink/USB?
    * Is Occulink better than a PCI riser cable? Perhaps it can be a longer cable or is just as fast?
    * What open bench style options are good for an eGPU with Occulink?
    * Are there any prebuilt eGPU cases with Occulink worth using?
    * Is it worth putting an AIO or other extra cooling with things like a 4090 in an eGPU format?
    * Is it simple to put the card in a small PC case of some kind, and use it as an eGPU?
    * If so, what's a budget case that would be sensible, and what's the luxury option for the 4090 crowd?
    * Is Occulink better or worse than the Asus XG Mobile connector (which seems to be Occulink+USB for extra bandwidth/device support)
    * Do you think there's something better than either of those coming such as Occulink 2, Asus thing becoming a standard, or USB-65?
    * Is it possible to use a mobile GPU in a home built eGPU and is that even worth thinking about?
    * How long can an Occulink cable be, because that affects desk layout?
    * Are there any docks that support Occulink too that might help with that?
    * Will you be getting an ETA Prime Stencil so you can replace the tiger with your own brand?
    I think that's about it. For me, I'm hoping to get an Asus Z Flow 13 at some point, so I can use it as my office/work PC going forward and also to give me a tablet and laptop all in one. I probably wouldn't bother with the eGPU for that as it's unlikely to face that kind of workload and I want to avoid gaming on it anyway.
    But for the gaming PC, and for messing around with Stable Diffusion and ineptly using photo editing software and stuff, I'd like to move up to a 4060 Ti 16gb from this 1080 which is... well, it's a champ and it was given to me by a friend, but it's still 'ancient' and a 40 series would be a massive upgrade. Not that a 4090 wouldn't be nice to have. I love the idea of a future where I could put whatever card I use, in its own box with reliable cooling and plug it into a Rog Ally, or Steamdeck, or my office or gaming PC to use it as needed. Not to mention the cooling being easier to control. Hopefully the Occulinks of the future will surpass the speed that the graphics cards can operate at, have long enough cables to help with layout and ultimately, reduce e-waste.

    • @jonevansauthor
      @jonevansauthor 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You might need to do a series of eGPU videos answering questions such as, 'Why even use an eGPU instead of a massive desktop?' and, 'Why wouldn't I just use an expensive laptop with weak hardware?' Lots of comments in here have no earthly idea why an eGPU is advantageous in some situations, which is not entirely inexplicable. I have reasons to like the idea, some people are completely baffled by it though because other options seem more sensible, easier or better until someone explains what the use cases are.

      I'd say the Intel NUC was a pretty major thing but it came out after Pi. It's probably more likely that there was an inflection point where the hardware shrank back down to the size that could make the whole thing possible, and of course, Microsoft stopped bloating Office and Windows so normal office usage requirements remained similar.
      (Don't get me wrong, they're still buggy, bloated and awful but a better CPU isn't going to make Word, Outlook or Acrobat Reader perform much better anymore.)

      I was running Atom based X86 PCs in 2009 well before the Raspberry PI came out. The Pi and the NUC were just this generation's foray into the idea of what used to be called "nettops". Those Atom based machines would run Windows 7 or Linux (I ran Lindows for a few years) like a champ, game on basic stuff, browse the web, and even run some versions of photoshop. I traveled with one of those for YEARS. My favorite was the ZOTAC that was the size of a cigarette pack.

    I'm curious if it would be worth considering putting in the 7745hx in this and keep its peak power low. As opposed to pushing the hs chip to its max. I know that would require a while new motherboard, so it's not practical, but....if they figure an egpu will be used, the hx models may be an interesting chip to use in this size case

    im really wondering how much RAM was allocated to the GPU. if you said it i missed it. Would like to see it maxed out and the GPU to be overclocked and the CPU tuned

    Do you have or would you consider making a sheet that lists and compares emulation performance across chips ? Sbc and igpu/apu would be of most interest for me but others might be interested in cpu/gpu combo performance as well.
    If this already exists somewhere, oops! I’d love to look at it.

    Hey, Prime, I'm a long time viewer, and love your videos, and you are always my go to guy when trying new stuff. But I have a question, if I may.
    I am in the process of building myself a luxury off grid mobile home, and I knew that this would be the perfect computer for this purpose. But here's the thing: I don't really want to run this little PC off of a power inverter. I am building my van around a 24v solar system, but do you think it would be possible to hard wire this computer straight into my 24v system? I appreciate the volts/amps need to be specific to this computer, otherwise I run the risk of blowing it up. But do you have any ideas where I might be able to get a custom built power supply that will run straight from my 24v batteries, and give this little computer exactly what it requires?
    I appreciate this may be a little out of your usual content, but any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks, buddy.

    Really wish they had more USB-C ports.. those USB-3 ports seem out of place here. Also, it would be really great if you could test this model with your beefier eGPUs.. running games in 4K. I'd appreciate that as that would be my own use-case. Finally.. when you are running Cyberpunk, are you able to turn on Ray Tracing with the setups you tested in this video? Thanks!
