I think you explained the Dreamcast very well. "An intersection between old-school gaming and modern gaming"... Because this is so true, why the Dreamcast is still attractive to this day is because games are simple, creative, fun, with a huge emphasis on "gameplay first", a design principle which has been lost in modern AAA gaming and can instead be found in creative indie game development. Dreamcast games also looked great because this was the first generation where we truly got high res. (480p), perspective-correct, texture filtered 3D (the N64 dabbled with it but had too many technical shortcomings). Many of the rasterization techniques we use today, The Dreamcast could produce. Texture filtering, multi-texturing, cube maps, light maps, shadow maps, normal maps (bump mapping), hardware geometry culling. It lacked programmable shaders, which was the next big step in rasterized graphics. But all in all, Dreamcast games still look nice!
SEGA definitely was in their absolute PRIME when they launched the Dreamcast. And I love this console to death. I still play on it, every week, and all of these years, it's the only console which has always been hooked up to my TV.

The Dreamcast was the very first system I ever saw & played on back in the late 2000’s. Since my grandma worked at Sega assembling arcade cabinets, she got us a Dreamcast with a few accessories & sealed games. To this day I still play on the Dreamcast with games like SA1, Sega smashpack vol. 1 which is also my first ever game, & more recently SA2. I had to order that one & man is it expensive lol. Hopefully one day I can get all of the emblems. I also got a really nice golden shell & metal Dreamcast emblem to replace the original shell since it had gotten sticky after being in storage at some point, & the same for the GD-rom assembly. Recently I put in a Noctua fan & it’s a lot more enjoyable playing on the Dreamcast :)

I wish Sega was still putting out home consoles. They were always top notch, and still are, in the arcade realm. To bring the arcade experience home was always what Sega seemed to be after (at least thats what I got from them) and they, imo, did it very well.

Dreamcast was the perfect Nintendo 64 upgrade, we traded our N64 with a lot of games for a Dreamcast in a store back in 1999. We were amazed by the graphics, we also knew a guy that could burn the games on CD. Shenmue 1 and 2 became my favorite games of all time next to Street Fighter 3th Strike, great times! I still play some DC games on emulator.

Dreamcast at launch for only 199.99 with amazing launch library was the greatest value of all time in gaming. They could have discontinued it after a month and just with the launch price and launch titles I'd have put it as one of my favorite systems. I had Soul Caliber, Sonic Adventure and NFL2k for over 2 years while people were dreaming of dishonest PS2 promises that never happened. NFL 2k and Soul Caliber in particular just absolutely destroyed anything else in the world for quite a long time for launch purchasers.

Even after more than 20 years, Dreamcast still holds up. It’s interesting when the AVGN reviewed Seaman, he says the fact he hasn’t reviewed that many DC games was a testament to how good the console truly is. But yes, as for the console being easy to program for, it’s why it still has a homebrew scene today, and many of the developmental tools are still compatible with the console.
My top titles are: Shenmue (1 and 2), Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Guilty Gear X, Capcom Vs SNK 2, Virtua Fighter 3tb, Soul Calibur, Rez (Japan only), Skies of Arcadia, Crazy Taxi, Gunspike

Man I fell in love with that thing, especially playing it during the summer. The cool thing was because it was a failed console the games were dirt cheap at my local circuit city. I bought Zombies revenge, Sonic adventure and Jet Grind radio, each for 10 bucks. As soon as i figured out how to pirate games it was GG mustve played 60+ games on it.

  • @fishersfritz7958

Worth mentioning as well is that a lot of titles had their definitive version on the dreamcast, to name a few Spiderman, THPS, Soul Reaver, Shadow Man etc... These titles would struggle on the ps1 or the N64 with low framerates and inferior graphics. On the dreamcast however the games would look crisp have a stable framerate and would look very impressive for their time. I always found that pretty cool.

I love the dreamcast. I agree with you that it was kind of a sweet spot between the things we see now in gaming and the previous generations. I’ve got all the sega consoles and it is by far my favorite. It’s such a shame that sega died out the way they did I honestly think that if they incorporated a dvd drive like ps2 did it would have been a much different story but that’s all history and now the gaming industry has been forever changed and we all lost out on a lot of potentially amazing machines because of the stupid console wars and the fanboys (and gals) loyal to each company as opposed to just gaming for the fun of it regardless of which machine it’s on.

The Dreamcast will always have a place in my video game collection, and it’s the best way to play most of the games released during that time until the GameCube and Ps2 stepped in but even some after that, and I think that’s that “sweet spot” you’re referring to. It made 3D games that seemed lesser on PS1 or N64 really shine their most, and even MVC2 on DC is better than PS2 imho. Great video!

Like everything is just a matter of personal taste.
But as long as I agree with most of your reasons, I must add another one:
    The peripherals.
I just completed my collection of all the Dreamcast peripherals a few days ago, buying the Panther DC, and it is incredible how much the peripherals, most of them high quality ones, enhance the gaming experience to the point that playing a rythmn, or fishing, or typing game is a lot of fun.
As you talk about Slave Zero, I found myself using my new Panther DC with Starlancer and it was awesome, even the crappy Kiss Psycho Circus can be fun playing it with the Panther DC.

Most Dreamcast games were 480p. Most PS2 games were 480i. Back then most of us had only CRT TV’s (I know I did) and you couldn’t see the difference. If you wanted to play in higher quality you needed a pc monitor with VGA for Dreamcast and a tv with Component for PS2. Most of us used the cables they came with (avi).
PS2 came with a DVD player and backwards compatible with PS1. The controllers had built in rumble and dual analogue sticks and twice the triggers. Rumble for DC was a controller attachment and there was no BC or DVD playback.
I had both. Returned the DC because of overheating issues after only an hour of play. It would need to cool down and eventually do it all over again. Dealt with that for about a week..
With modern tv’s today and other devices to get clean signals out of both consoles it’s an easy win for Dreamcast outside of a smaller library. I hardly ever play PS2 because the interlacing is too distracting for me.
I think the best we could hope for is Sega to release their games on modern consoles through digital downloads.
Also play Gauntlet Legends. It’s on N64 and PS1 but graphically the best on Dreamcast.

SEGA is not the company that introduced me to gaming, but the SMS was the second video game console in our house and through it and the Genesis, my love for gaming was assured!
Early 3D was really a growing pain for the games industry and it can be quite difficult to go back to 3D N64/PS1/SAT games, as most have aged less than gracefully. When the DC was released, this is when I felt home gaming had caught up to the arcades (or in some ways, surpassed them, as with Soul Calibur)!
Although Sony and MS have helped grow the industry, it was truly a sad day when SEGA announced they would no longer be making any new systems...it's like gaming's innocence died that day. We were lucky to have that time for as long as we did! (:

You mentioned something similar to what I am typing, in my opinion the SEGA Dreamcast has the highest and funest and replayable games of any system in my opinion that number is between 65-90 percent, nothing even comes close (except the PC ENGINE or turbo graphics 16) and some of the consoles with the highest none replayable games PS2, PS4, N64 and Wii each with thousands of titles can go as low as 20 percent replayability sad, SEGA was truly on fire with their swan song console and don’t forget to mention a big thank you to Capcom for helping to keep the fire burning…. and the north of 2k sports….. if this played dvds we would be talking about the Dreamcast 3 or something else, well like you my mouth can keep running about the Dreamcast and of all consoles more games are still made for the Dreamcast….. look it up, thanks for the video, I have been answering phone calls also for years to that awesome orange swirl and crazy cool SEGA sound…..peace

I bought my first Dreamcast in 2022 and its the console i most enjoy playing currently.
Only game i have that i don't like is Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Eagle Watch Missions. It hasn't aged very well.

Just wanted to give some recommendations. Plasma Sword is a pretty solid fighting game by Capcom that nobody really talks about. Same with Project Justice. Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 is a fantastic and addictive racing game, probably the best looking one on the system too IMO. The DC version of Soul Reaver is easily the best console version of it. And if ya want a couple great newer / indie games check out Gunlord and Sturmwind. Both absolutely gorgeous.

The system is amazing. The only thing that makes it hard to play in 2022 is the lack of a second analog stick. It makes many games that I’m used to playing with two sticks, really hard.

the Dreamcast is a 6th generation console and it did beat the ps2, Gamecube and Xbox to market which were also a part of the 6th generation, launching on September 9th 1999. but because of the PS2 launching in 2000 the Dreamcast was overshadowed. the Dreamcast was definitely ahead of its time.

Not sure if people know this but Microsoft actually helped a lot with the Dreamcast. Like the software, how it could go online, etc. So pretty much the original XBOX was Dreamcast 2 when it came out. That’s why lot of the games that were on XBOX were sequels from Dreamcast.

Agreed. The OG Xbox was the closest thing we got to a Dreamcast 2.

Let me pet your cat while we take turns in toy commander.
But fr what a good taste I never owned a Dreamcast (was born in 97 didn’t have older siblings) and my dad was past video games at the time I was born he introduced me to the Genesis tho and and I’m a sonic fan since then, and I only owned a ps1 from that generation, and i gotta say that game looks so fun and something I would’ve loved

There's actually a cat in the house in Toy Commander. You can wake it up and cause it to walk around. You can also shoot the turds in the litter box.

91 I thought I had a pretty good DC collection with about 40 games 38 to be exact. Its one of the only systems that I still have the Dreamcast and my trusty Gamecube there was something special about these 2 systems to me as I couldn't part with them.

I took up computers in the early 90s. I never thought I would play another console again. The Dreamcast proved me wrong. At that time I had what I thought was a pretty expensive computer. The Dreamcast provided me with a more enjoyable experience.

    1: Shadow man
    2: Soul Reaver
    3: Slave Zero.
Of course Soul Calibur, Jet Grind Radio Ready to Rumble Round 2, Capcom Vs SNK 2, and many other games are all great in their own ways

Everybody should have Bought the Dreamcast .!
    It was too cheap.
    Games was fun
And it was the first fully realized online system.
You right Dreamcast was the sweet spot of 3d gaming .
*the controller was a clunky if sega had streamlined the controller it would be wonderful
*angle the handles out & shorten them
*internal rumble to remove that extra bump under the controller
*added shoulder buttons the space was there 🤷🏾‍♂️ 🤦🏾‍♂️
    * change the dpad to the genesis dpad
*slide the analog more to the right and slide the dpad up and to the left
    *widen the trigger buttons
    *rubber covering on analog

No, you’re not seeing the Dreamcast through rose-tinted glasses. No console is perfect, not all the games on any of them are all golden… but Dreamcast was a very solid product, and I will stand by this until the day that I die. It had a very solid library, lotsa Arcade games brought to home (the Naomi board let us had ALL the best Capcom fighting games to date and I dare say, even more than the next two generations), many of the Sega IPs were sick, the music was amazing, the third party support had a lot of good things going on, the graphics are still good, the creativity of most first party games makes the games prime for remakes and ports today, etc…
Yes, it is one of the most amazing game consoles to ever come out.

It's rose-tinted glasses. And I say that as a huge Dreamcast fan that has played an extensive portion of the library. The fact that it's Sega's last console, and being there in that time, and having those memories of context when Dreamcast was cutting edge... you look at Crazy Taxi now, and it looks quite quaint, to say the least. But those graphics blew me away at the time. There's no way to really explain how much of a leap that was graphically at the time. And virtually no PS1 or N64 game ran at 60fps. Anyway, most of the simple arcade stuff -- which is the Dreamcast's main claim to fame -- holds up pretty well, I think. But everything else... the lack of a second analogue creates a lot of mechanical/control problems in _a lot_ of the games. Now, I'm a person who can adjust to esoteric, non-intuitive control schemes OK most of the time, but most people aren't. However, if you're into the weird and obscure -- as I am -- Dreamcast is home to a lot of that, too. Still love it. But, objectively, I probably couldn't put it on that totem.

I totally agree with how great of a system the Dreamcast is, it’s right up there with SNES. I’ll try to make a list of sleeper hits and my favorite games I think you’ll enjoy.
    Die Hard Trilogy
    D4
    Egg
    Soul Caliber
    Sword of Berserk: Guts Rage
    Rayman 2
    Blue Stinger
    Chu chu Rocket
    Rush 2049
    Soul Reaver
That’s all I can think of but I’ll look up all the games and add any good ones below

I remember I was playing that game for a bit and ran into lots of technical issues.

  • @wettuga2762
    @wettuga2762 2 ปีที่แล้ว

First rule of a console/game collector: NEVER set your mind on a list of games you will definitely play (before you die), because 99% of people never get to do it. That's why I limited my console collection to 4 brands (Microsoft/Nintendo/Sega/Sony) and only from 16bit and up, because that's the ones I grew up with. I experienced most of them through friends, so the nostalgia factor is not as strong as those I really owned. I do have lists of the best games for each console, because that way I'll enjoy the best they have to offer whenever I pick one console to play, without forcing myself to play a predetermined list of games.
EDIT: I also have an arcade running MAME so if I want a quick play that's my main choice, but it doesn't overlaps Dreamcast games because it only contains the "All Killer, No Filler" lists plus a hand full of my favorites I used to play as a teenager :)

@@GamingTheSystems1 I guess it mostly depends on how much free time one has. Many people are so busy and free time is so sparse due to, well, life, that short gaming sessions push away those longer games. It's the main reason I go for the "arcady" type games more quickly. I do pick up a longer game once in a while but never get around to finish it, thinking "when I retire I'll play all day!"
