  • In this episode, we talk to journalist Shahbaz Ansar about what it's like to be an atheist with a Muslim name in India. I'm guessing it's definitely harder than being a "Hindu Atheist". Support this channel at vimoh.stck.me

Unfortunately, in deeply religious countries-i.e. in deeply superstitious countries-such as India, atheism and irreligious (and also non so-called Dharmic) tendencies are considered to be frames of mind that do not deserve recognition.

    In short:
I've a great care and love for my elder sister, this is how i saw and realize how my sister lacks alot of opportunity and status because of her gender.
I became feminist, being a feminist i started being an apologist Muslim, spinning Quran and hadith in order to align it my religion. But this didn't ripe well, eventually i realized I was just lying to myself only, I started looking into religion more deeper from sociological pov to scientific. And gradually my faith started to diminish which was obviously inevitable.
This is how i left my religion.

I presume that you are from India.
Unfortunately, atheism is considered unacceptable in deeply religious countries (i.e. deeply superstitious countries) such as India.
There are Hindus (i.e. so-called Sanatana Dharmists) who claim that Hinduism allows atheism-in order to claim that their religion (so-called dharmic system of beliefs) is more magnanimous than other religions, especially Islam and Christianity.
Such persons are blissfully ignorant of what Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita (especially in Chapter 7), about persons who do not surrender to him (i.e. to the Hindu god).
By definition, atheists would be a component of the set of persons who do not surrender to Krishna, because atheists do not even believe that any god exists.

Especially when Vimoh spoke about having an option for non-religious people in Census - which is what has been on my mind for quite sometime now. I want my option on being an atheist be seperately recognised. I also feel that religion option should accounted for every individual in a family. Like Shahbaz, even i feel that atheist need to be organised and I agree with his reasoning on why that needs to happen. Thanks for such an insightful discussion.

Religious minorities are provided reservation but not atheists. Either give reservation to atheists or don't give reservation to religious minorities.

It is important that Government adds "no religion" as an option for surveys and forms. There are many more atheists than officially recognized in India. A petition should be sent to GOI. On the flip side, when atheism grows somehow media will discuss "atheism jihad" in prime time and even Muslims and Christians will agree.

I disagree with Vimoh's claim at 22:21 that atheists in India are not persecuted.
Even though there is no explicit persecution of atheists in India (yet), that is perhaps mainly because atheists in India have been silent by and large-at least in the last few centuries.
If atheists in India try to run a TV show such as 'The Atheist Experience', that is when the true colours of the theists of India will come out in the open.

    1. In islam the murtad (an atheist) is brutally treated and I know quite a few atheist muslims which do not come out, remain under disguise or fly out of India.
    2. If someone is believes that an atheist in islam is a disguise for one reason mentioned above and the other reason is al-taqiya, whicj clearly allows a disguise in the dar ul haram if the conditions are not favourable.

I agree with you that we need to add atheist or non-religious to the census. It already has religion not stated option, and there are 0.7 million people under that category in the last census.
For atheists to claim policy directed towards them we must first establish that they have a distinctive need. People belonging to certain religious group need to practice their religion so they have requirements regarding that but what specific need an atheist would have simply on account of being an atheist?
Also assimilating atheism in Hindu fold is not "caste-splaining" as Vimoh mentioned. Atheist has a specific meaning in the west. It means that religion which believes in personal God. Most of Indian schools of Philosophy do not believe in personal God and people mistake this with having something like Hindu atheist...
All schools of thought except Charvaka in India subscribe to supernatural belief even if it is not a belief in person God that is the creator of the universe ex nihilo. Usually such claims come up because people do not fully grasp the meaning of the terms involved. No religion can be atheistic though some are God-less.
Lastly the question you get from fellow atheists seem like Vimoh is the new Baba of atheists who explains the code of conduct to their cult. 😅 We atheists need to be socially differently organized or else much of the discussion around injustice towards atheists at least reminded me of the early days of Christianity and unfair treatment they received. We sound like a persecuted community that is showing courage in the face of ghor anyaya from fanatics. 😅

Its beyond the comprehension of human mind. Dont we all agree that this perfect universe did not came into existence of its own without any proper planning? In spite of your laughing emoji, I will assume that you are asking sincerely, and therefore here is the definition of atheism:
'Atheism is the absence of belief that any god exists.'
I am an atheist because so far there is not a shred of verifiable evidence, not a shred of credible evidence, that any god (of any religion, any belief-system, any 'way of life', any 'dharmic system') exists.

51:26 One correction, Hitler did not persecute Jews due to blaming them for killing jesus. European anti semitism comes from this idea. Hitler hated jews due to blaming them for aiding Germanys defeat during the First World War and considered them to be communist sympathizers who were trying to weaken Germany with the destructive ideology of COmmunism.
Secondly, Hitler was not a christian, he was baptized as a catholic but was anti clerical and only pandered to christian sentiments for his political gain, he himself as recorded by his biographers wanted to reduce the influence of the Church in German society.
For someone who is supposedly Christian he banned religious instruction in church run schools, removed all symbols of the christianity from church run schools and hospitals, had a special concentration camp for priests, where most of the people were catholics( the denomination he was baptized in), he shut down catholic run trade unions, catholic newspapers and even killed catholic political opponents.
The clincher is the hatred that the German National Church that Hitler tried to form had for Paul, who is the one who spread christianity to the non-jews, no person who calls Paul a distorter of Christs message to make people susceptible to being influenced by Jews, can be called a Christian by any stretch of imagination. He was an atheist.

The amount of religious influence in Nazi propaganda is evidence that he was religious. And the propaganda about jews was fueled by Biblical hatred for jews. I understand the need to cleanse one's religion from Hitler, but I'm afraid there is literally no evidence for Hitler being an atheist. He was, at the very least, someone who did believe in god and was therefore not an atheist.

@@vimohlive Well, he was not a christian at least, in his own life he never showed any great consideration to Christianity, his own targetting of the catholic church is well documented, as well as his own churches teachings. I dont know how someone who accuses Paul of distorting Jesus message can ever be called a christian, there literally is no Christianity without Paul.
I dont deny that many of the people who supported Nazism were christian ( there were atheists as well and even a German Hindu), and I also dont deny Nazis made use of Christian symbolsm in their public speeches but behind closed doors, not even Hitler liked the religion and many of his actions against the church, his plans to eradicate the predominantly christain slavic population and his own personal views as recorded in Table Talk show this.
Please tell me how Hitlers own personal thoughts on christianity, make him a
      christian, here are some gems:
"When one thinks of the opinions held concerning Christianity by our best minds a hundred, two hundred years ago, one is ashamed to realise how little we have since evolved. I didn't know that Julian the Apostate had passed on such clear-sighted judgment on Christianity[...] the Galilean, who later was called Christ, intended something quite different. The Galilean was and must always be regarded as a popular leader who took up His position against the Jews [...] and it's certain that Jesus was not a Jew. The Jews, by the way, regarded Him as the son of a whore-of a whore and a Roman soldier. The decisive falsification of Jesus's teachings was the work of St. Paul [...] or Paul of Tarsus (his name was Saul, before the road to Damascus) was one of those who persecuted Jesus most savagely"
      - From Hitlers Table Talk dated 21st October 1941.
"The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity. Bolshevism is Christianity's illegitimate child. Both are inventions of the Jew."
      Hitlers Table Talk, 1953
"You see, it's been our misfortune to have the wrong religion. Why didn't we have the religion of the Japanese, who regard sacrifice for the Fatherland as the highest good? The Mohammedan religion too would have been more compatible to us than Christianity. Why did it have to be Christianity with its meekness and flabbiness?"
Inside the Third Reich Memoirs, by Albert Speer, Page 115
"Christianity is a rebellion against natural law, a protest against nature. Taken to its logical extreme, Christianity would mean the systematic cultivation of the human failure."
      Table Talk, 1941-44
"I realise that man, in his imperfection, can commit innumerable errors - but to devote myself deliberately to errors, that is something I cannot do. I shall never come personally to terms with the Christian lie. Our epoch, in the next 200 years, will certainly see the end of the disease of Christianity. My regret will have been that I could not behold its demise."
      Table Talk, 1941-44
      This is my favorite one.
"If, in the course of a thousand or two thousand years, science arrives at the necessity of renewing its points of view, that will not mean that science is a liar. Science cannot lie, for it's always striving, according to the momentary state of knowledge, to deduce what is true. When it makes a mistake, it does so in good faith. It's Christianity that's the liar. It's in perpetual conflict with itself."
      Table Talk 1941-44
"Christianity is the worst of the regressions that mankind can ever have undergone, and it's the Jew who, thanks to this diabolic invention, has thrown him back fifteen centuries. The only thing that would be still worse would be victory for the Jew through Bolshevism. If Bolshevism triumphed, mankind would lose the gift of laughter and joy. It would become merely a shapeless mass, doomed to grayness and despair."
      Table Talk, 1941-44
"This pride of race is a quality which the German, fundamentally, does not possess. The reason for this is that for these last three centuries the country has been torn by internal dissension and religious wars and has been subjected to a variety of foreign influences, to the influence, for example, of Christianity-for Christianity is not a natural religion for the Germans, but a religion that has been imported and which strikes no responsive chord in their hearts and is foreign to the inherent genius of the race."
      Table Talk 1941-44
He may be a theist but calling him a christain, especially in a country like India, where due to anti christian bigotry every crime western christians ever did is put on our feet is dangerous, we already face heat due to goan inquistion and the destruction of native american culture in the American culture, Indian christians dont need to hear about how the holocaust is also caused us.

@@vimohlive One last thing, yes, the German society did hate the jews due to what they believed they did to Jesus, but this had become a normative prejudice by the time Hitler rolled around.
No matter how virulently Christians hated the Jews before Hitlers birth, it never reached the level of hatred during the third Reich, along with banal religious hatred what nazism combined was a sense of ethnic nationalism where Jews were complete foreigners in terms of both religion and ethnicity, who also were blamed for the defeat of Germany in the First World War.
Christiaity definitely deserves the blame for creating anti semitism, but scientific racism and ethnic nationalism are what turned the Nazis into truly demonic people. They even wanted to ethnically cleanse the slavic people as well.

This” atheists are better and will bring peace” theory is BS. They too can be as majoritarian as religious people . Most are smug and look down on others who practice religion. ( BTW I am an atheist but don’t attribute any virtues to being that.) People can be bad/ good regardless of what they believe. China is committing genocide because they fear religious fanaticism. The world we live in is one where religious violence happens, religious violence is justified, and criticism of religion is deflected using "if atheists could, they would too". None of that is useful. I myself have a problem with smug atheists that I have spoken about on a a number of occasions. But the truth remains. Our problems are due to religion, not atheism. Imaginary fantasy scenarios do nothing to solve it. The three examples you started with, all did their bad things in the name of religion, not atheism.
