Umar Khalid has been in the headlines since 2016 when along with Kanhaiya Kumar and others, was accused of making anti-India statements ("Bharat tere tukde-tukde") in a JNU protest march, and most recently for starting the hashtag #ProphetOfCompassion that widely trended on Twitter. In a far-ranging interview with ThePrint's Shahbaz Ansar, Khalid asks why he still hasn't been charged with making those allegedly seditious comments in JNU, accuses parts of the mainstream media of compromising itself with the BJP establishment and insists that it is the BJP that has betrayed the people and broken its promises to them.

I remember an incident, coincidently from JNU, I was there to visit a friend of mine.. some guys were just talking about muslims (and why one must keep distance from them) in the washroom, not accusing them of anything coz it could be just for fun.. but when I entered they became a little concious and said, "..yeh bhi miyan hi hoga.." and looked at me if did not hear anything.. hoping that I'm not one of them..
I said, looking at them, "..haa, yeh kaise pataa chalta haii.." And they couldn't face me.
I'm not a muslim but for the first time in my life I somehow wanted to portray myself as one ki agar hu bhi toh kya kar lega..
It's not about Religion, if I'm attacked for being a Rajasthani, or Kashmiri, I'll fight as a Rajasthani or kashmiri.. as simple as that.

They didn't even put the word Secularism. And one of the key directives to State was to bring UNIFORM CIVIL COURT i.e Evry one should be treated equally before law.

And 15% is not a minority, not even by UN rules. 20 crore peoples are more than most of the countries.
