Strut vs Shock Tutorial
yet another successful trip around the Sun. Congratulations!!!
lol
These videos have been helping me for over a year now!!! Thank you man! Happy birthday!! My birthday is also dec 14
+EVOwj Happy birthday man!
Looks like you need a ski day! Should be getting snow this weekend!
+Daniel Phillips Heck YES! Got that today- I feel SO much better!
Real nice description with video. Class room - good job.
Happy Birthday
Another video as always Brian, your videos are always informative, thanks again, have a merry Christmas and a very prosperous new year
Great video Brian - Have a great day!
I love your vids and your voice is reassuring, sounds like hey this sucks, but whe're gunna get through this
wow, bless you and your family for all the good deeds you've done Brian. I hope you and your daughter back in good health soon. thank you again. keep it up
+juck huo Thank you! We're pretty much out of the woods now. She's been seizure free for several years now. I'm still just super grateful and that Glut1 group is to thank for it. They're still pushing science to make our families quality of life better and my daughters life expectancy more normal. It's SO not profitable for their doctors, but they do it anyway because they are Dr. Jonas Salk types. As for her quality of life now vs. before- HOLY SMOKE! It's so much better now that the seizures have stopped. She's reading, runs normal, looks more normal. Her motor function is almost normal now, and she can dance. That kid LOVES to dance and I don't have to hover and worry every time she does now. We had some crazy head injuries when she'd drop- it was heart breaking. Man! So grateful!
+briansmobile1 big smile (idk how to make a smiley face lol) i'm so glad to hear that. things like that are life changing. you make the most of it and it is very rewarding. as you said to see someone be able to dance after years of suffering is just joyful. im literally tearing up thinking about this stuff but in a good way lol.
The video answered a question I had during your last video on this subject! So cool. :) Struts vs. Shocks. I'll have to keep re-watching it to fully get it, lol.
Hi Brian. Thanks for the video. I just purchased Monroe Quick Struts and will be installing them on my own. Was hoping for more information on my type of suspension setup, I saw the drawing of it on the board. Can you do more videos on struts in the future please? Thanks for all the tips and tricks.
+Joe Shaw Absolutely! I'm making another one here next week.
Great repair video, man!
Get well soon!
Thanks Buddy, excellent vid , the garage is looking almost complete. I wish I knew how to do all that fancy stuff you do in a vid, ha I'm always waiting now for something to appear. Have a great Birthday tomorrow. Take Care
+Steve Rob I know, I'm blown away how he can keep talking and weave in other scenes in the middle of talking. Now that's some magic!
(You say similar awesomeness to me, thank you, but really this level of editing is still well beyond me, lol.)
Happy Birthday Brian!!
I have a 2002 Honda Accord, and had the same problem you had with the flat sided tip of the strut.
i just put new struts on my subie
nice fix
Happy Birthday
Super-awesome mega-happy cakeday, Brian!
Hope you have a great Birthday, you are taking the day off right?
Great video as always!
happy birthday, wish you all the best. كل عام وانت بخير : )
These are just coil over shocks, not struts. Struts are an integral part of the suspension/steering geometry. Just because it has a spring, that doesn't make it a strut. For example, if you remove the so called 'strut' and it doesn't effect the geometry or alignment it is indeed just a coil over shock.
+willieb66 Alright. You've got your work cut out for you. Everyone lists them as struts. They even sell "strut mounts" for them. God speed and good luck! I SOLUTE YOU! Go get'em tiger!
+briansmobile1 The aftermarket parts industry always generalizes terminology because 90% of their customer base doesn't know squat about the parts they need. It's the manufacturers terminology that important from a technicians standpoint. I can post all kinds of links that backup what I said but I'm not going to argue with you. Brian, you make great videos, you're a smart dude, and I think you're a hell of a technician. But, I'm going to respectfully disagree with you on this. Cheers brother. Keep up the good work.
+willieb66 That's alright by me. Thanks!
Bravo, dude! 12' wheel? Never heard that before 👍🏻
December 14th 🎂🍻
+Mario Dalla Riva It's a term used in body work for how fine the work is- usually associated with the paint finish quality.
Oh, and I hope you get to feeling better soon
Me too. Got sick at the same "time" or when the video was released.
Happy Birthday!
what's with the multi link and the drink the cool aide comment? I wanna know your thoughts on that lol
Came back just to wish you happy birthday. Enjoy!
+DE Nichols Thank you!
Shove it up the arse of the spring? Something tells me Brian is a bit under the weather, he rarely swears. Hope all is well man.
do you make knives as well ??
cool video bro
Happy Birthday!!!
The name on the cake was misspelled though... it should be Brain. :)
+patw52pb1 What, it's his birthday? Did I not finish the video before I started typing again? lol
+DE Nichols
Yes, sir, December 14th.
See 12:55
My daughter's birthday is the very next day, she's in good company.
DE Nichols
Give her a huge hug and wish her a happy birthday from your TH-cam family.
patw52pb1
Ha! That's awesome. I will!
MACPHERSON please Brian. Still gave you a like though. And Happy birthday!
happy bday Brian
happy happy birthday
Happy birthday bro
Yeaeeeaah we didn't die..... ending
happy birthday
wtf he giving full courses on this channel lol usually people have to pay for stuff like this
+Squabbles You're absolutely right.
I still remember the first time I saw a Nitro, I thought they had recreated the Cherokee in a slightly wrong way.
+Dest Droid I can't call it Nitro. I call it "the Jeep." I've had so many Cherokees it's what I see and feel when I drive it, but easier driving.
That upper control arm sounds really dry lol.
+AJ Harran YES! It's making me crazy. There will be silicone paste up in there if not new bushings too.
Just curious, I believe my '07 Legacy is a double wishbone type suspension, correct?
I replaced the rear wheel bearing and it seems that the rear hub arm sort of looks like a ladder bar.
+briansmobile1 i got interupted by a phone call in the middle of the video. I'm so glad these comments tethered me back to things I need to know...I may just have to pull some of my Chevy Prizm back apart and put silicon in and around my sway bar bushings. Metal to rubber - will make noise eventually. Awesome tip!
what about torsion double wishbone? i just have shocks
+RedTeamWolf That means you've got torsion bars, which are pretty much the same thing as a coil spring except they are straight, not coiled and they twist instead of compressing. They also have torsion keys which you can adjust to make ride height more or less(by increasing spring rate).
+RedTeamWolf You probably drive a Chevy. They love doing that. I had a Dodge Dakota like that too. I wanted to illustrate that too, but wanted to keep it simple for my friend Simon. Ever wonder why Chevy's high center on nothing? That is why. My Dakota did too!
+briansmobile1 it's on my lifted mazda b4000
+briansmobile1 Hmm, I still don't know why Chevy's high center on nothing.
+Jack Begley My Nissan Frontier uses torsion bars up front, good thing I know how to adjust it now too, not because I'm a lift monster, but because I need to get the camber a little flatter to save on tire wear.
Hey, what's the matter with Chrysler? I mean as a company, seriously, what the hell are they on? Great video!
+ejbcomp Thanks!
I love Chrysler. I always have, but I'm not a zombie fan-boy. I call them on their crap in hopes it will make something better. It's like screaming at the football game on TV I guess.
Chrysler has an identity crisis and several other crisis' every decade or less because they've been bought and sold so many times. They are historically almost as irritating to service as Ford's because they are historically NOT designed to be serviced. They're designed to be mass produced as efficiently as possible and sold like hot cakes.
They're designed to look awesome, have great brochure numbers, and test drive to feel like your first time touching boobies- that is, smooth, moving, comfortable, and passionately exciting. Sexy really.
I imagine the design process at Chrysler goes something like this.
Step 1: Design the coolest looking thing on the market.
Step 2: Cram some crazy awesome drive train into that shape so it's as balanced and geometrically correct as we can without going completely broke.
Step 3: Try to fit a battery and AC compressor in there somewhere.
Step 4: Strap whatever is necessary to the engine to get it to pass emissions. Step 5: Find a way to make it affordable by using plastic in unholy ways.
Step 6: Sell and advertise the crap out of it so the break even point can be met and maybe make some money too.
Chrysler's are for people who love to love their cars. They are the affordable fun car bunch.. till it comes time to service them.
Fortunately Fiat is making that a lot better now with better wiring and cleaner design physically and in the software. (if only you could access the settings and make it how you like it)
Ford could take a lesson there except their too proud to admit they've got a group think God complex problem since their inception. My opinion is that Ford is reckless in designing radical one-off parts and powertrains on the fly as if they're BMW, but too much and too fast - all just to keep competitive. They are the guy that says he can do something he's never tried before and says "dude, have I ever let you down" when he has. While he often does it, he falls on his face hard and publicly when he doesn't. He's pretty prideful, but talented just the same. That's my idea of Ford if they were a dude. I bring that up because I mentioned them earlier and I have a gift for tangents.
+briansmobile1 A very well thought out reply. Incidentally it was your videos that made me take the plunge and finally buy myself a Subaru. I lucked out and got a 99 Outback Limited with only ~62k on the odometer for $500. It needed some suspension work and the owner is unfortunately in a long term care facility so he wanted to give someone a good deal.I'm no pro, but I've always managed to do my own work outside of tires and the occasional real alignment. I was afraid to switch to something with a different type of engine, but watching your Subaru stuff along with some of the videos from SMA made me go for it. I love that car and I love your use of tangentially in this video. I'll stop bugging you on this one before I make an asymptote of myself!
+briansmobile1 I remember the first time I went to check the transmission fluid on my mom's 2005 dodge magnum and realized it doesn't have a dipstick and immediately thought to myself wtf? but even with some design flaws she's managed to safely put 300,000 miles on that thing. Chrysler does make a nice frustrating vehicle sometimes haha
+briansmobile1 That was funny and very worthwhile.
Why?? That's Chrysler! That's why... :-))
Guess what?
+DE Nichols Surprize, surprize... Chrysler @08:19 LOL.
***** it goes. Gussed what? That's what. Guess why? Chicken thigh.
If you get told what!? At this point you can switch that's what to chicken butt.
Lol. Sorry. You made me think of a child's game an adult forced down my throat. Lol
+piewolfe Wow.Thanks for taking the time for the time stamp. Lol
Ugh. Bolts and nuts despite like that don't deserve the honor to be called bolts and nuts.
The only possible excuse for bolts like that is the deaths saved from people not using a spring compressor.
Ha Ha "Chrysler, Dicks". Happy birthday
+briansmobile1 Happy Birthday!!
What a mess... My old malibu was so easy and accessible
As usual, too many shits to remove just to replace a strut. That"s an intelligent design by Chrysler"s engineers.......geeezzz...
Your videos used to be clear and instructional. Now it seems you are just rambling. Sorry but thats how you come across.
I was sick all week, but didn't want to miss. That's likely why. It won't last.
+briansmobile1 2 parts brandy, 2 parts water and 1 part honey... warm 20 seconds in the microwave and you'll "feel" better... Happy Birthday. Jim
+James Tennier Thanks for having my back Jim : ) Thanks for changing your comment settings so I can respond too. I like this!
Brian; I share my secret remedy with those I care about... It does make one feel better (whether or not it actually helps with the cold becomes less important) regardless of symptoms but especially helpful with a sore throat. I prefer Korbel but that is just me. Have a great holiday season with the family. Enjoy our winter storms after we are done with them and they cross the Great Salt Lake for your neighborhood. Jim
+briansmobile1 Absolutely! I've wanted to reply to him too. :)
crappy design!
Hmmm. Seems to me it's designed to keep the tire flatter on the road during suspension travel like a short arm, long arm suspension design.
DE Nichols isn't that what all suspension designs are made for? Except some designs are simple and easy to replace while others are are just too dumb complicated and don't perform any better than the simple designs.
+vanox Meures every time I give a steering wheel a wiggle when driving a car to guess what it needs before an alignment and I'm blown away by handling, it has a crazy instead of simple design.
Don't get me wrong. Very careful choices on my car led to a great feeling suspension on something simple, but it took a lot more thought and a little customization.
do you make knives as well ??
+Richtis Grin Yes! Badly and infrequently.
+briansmobile1 man if you ever need any pointers or help I'd be glade to answer any questions or walk you through anything. we all started from the beginning its all part of learning. if you provide me a way to contact you or visa versa other than through YT comments you can hit me up anytime. take care
