Colm Meaney, again proving that Miles O'Brien is one of the toughest, hardest working, most abused members of Starfleet. The actor shines in a way that TNG didn't allow for him.

Has anyone ever figured out how you can tell O'Brien is an NCO not an officer?
In the very early TNG days, it wasn't consistent because be wasn't intended to be a continuing character. But once they established he's a chief, it's still very confusing.

@@silikon2 He wears different insignia, like little black stripe/patches.

@@chrissonofpear1384 I'll check, I have never noticed the patches. It's still weird he has pips.
But yeah the first couple TNG seasons don't really count because they never intended O'Brien to be a real character. Reportedly, his character basically came into existence because he's a nice and a competent actor.
Whenever they had a small role they were like, hey that guy is good and we liked him so bring him back.
In Farpoint, I don't think he even had a name and was called only "conn".

The weird thing is this society's approach to criminal penalties... literally concentrates the worst aspects of imprisonment and removes the best aspects.
A not small part of imprisonment is to get the person away from where they can do harm (at least to the general public) for many years.
Here, they remove that completely, so the person is still young and able to crime.

Hard Times is, in a way, the polar opposite of Inner Light. The experience is destroying to O'Brien. Colm Meaney (pronounced Collum) is such a good actor and these "must suffer" episodes really give him a chance to flex those abilities.
Shattered Mirror really gives us the first glimpse of how much of a warship the Defiant is. Fast, manoeuvrable and heavily armed, Sisko helped build a beast.

Hard Times is one of my favorite episodes of all time. That’s something you’ll notice about a lot of the recommendations. People are trying to give you serialized recommendations, or something they think that builds to something in later seasons. But some of the best Star Trek episodes are single stand alone episodes that take the characters or stories to places you’ve rarely experienced anywhere else on TV. What other show could tell the story of an alien race that in a course of a few hours forces you to experience another life lived in confinement… and that’s only how the episode opens. It’s just phenomenal.

Both are based on a large, movable "station" which rarely moves, where they explore other worlds using ships and a "wormhole".

I had a thought watching this reaction, that O'Brien having a family probably helps him "come back". And I suppose Picard seeing his crew as his family would help too. Just being around other people who clearly are the people they were "20 years ago" would sort of anchor you back to reality, and make it easier to put the false life off to the side. You get up, you see your 5 year old daughter...she is real, your reality where you are the father of a 5 year old daughter, must be real.

@@SteveHARDWATER Well yes - this was the last episode they did big big big model work on. Again, I dunno why they spent so much effort on this but they did...
By now there's some CGI defiant in random shots here and there - and by season 5, other than re-using stock footage, the Defiant is almost full CGI.
Model work will continue sporadically up until early season 6 - I think the USS Centaur was the last physical model filmed for DS9 (early-mid season 6).
EDIT: there's a couple of custom model shots in late season 6 and 7 but not for ships - these were for either bits of the station they needed angles on, or where they'd do full scale sets (say a runabout on a surface of a planet with the crew coming out) but that isn't really a model as a full scale prop.

Because nothing has changed for everyone around O'Brian, it sets the stage for what it is like for people who go through a traumatic event that people may not know about. It's not that people don't value this episode, the thing is there are just sooooo many great episodes on DS9 that it's hard to remember them all just off the top of your head when you list your favourites, and that list can change from one day to the next, but yes, "the irishman must suffer" episodes are always very good episodes, and this one (Hard Time) has also brought back another of his engineering crew that's a regular guest on the show (Enrique "Quique" Muñiz). DS9 really handles serious issues and social topics very well, in this case being PTSD, as well as questioning the morality of tthe prison system in general.

The reference to O'Brien having been imprisoned by Paradas isn't about the Cardassian prison and trial episode; it's about Whispers, the episode where the Paradas create an O'Brien clone who thinks he's O'Brien. By the way, I saw a documentary several years ago that suggests that innocent people who have been in prison for a substantial period before being exonerated have, statistically, an even harder time reintegrating into society than actual criminals have, and are often simply unable to function again. You can see why this would be the case: the criminal has at least the comfort of knowing that he was responsible for what happened to him, and that if he changes his behavior he can avoid repeating such consequences; but the wrongly convicted person, whatever he may believe intellectually, is apt to feel emotionally that there is no point in trying to build any kind of life for himself, because past experience shows that, no matter how innocent you may be, the authorities just come and take everything away from you anyway, making all of your efforts useless and pointless, so why make those efforts in the first place?

I buy that the fully armed and operational station could fight off a fleet because that's what a military station is supposed to do, but if the Defiant was THAT special everyone would make one!
Generally, the _Defiant_ is effective because it either goes on missions it's suited for, or is part of a fleet working together, and it gets its kills in and doesn't get killed, just like a bunch of other ships. The captain and plot armor only supplement that core capacity, not make it a one-ship superweapon.

When Hard Time first aired, I couldn't sleep for three or four nights afterwards, because the story upset me so much. I still think about it from time to time because it is so awful. The pure torture of being locked in a room for twenty years is horrifying. Then to compound matters, and in typical Federation weakness, the Federation does nothing to those people in terms of retaliation. Any other Star Trek power would have sent a fleet of ships to surround their planet to end those people - even the Ferengi wouldn't have taken this lying down the way the weak Federation did.

The sentence given to O'Brien is a very cruel one - not just imprisonment for 20 years in harsh conditions, but the fake memory of murdering his fake best friend. Having the memories of prison for 20 years is bad enough but to be so cruel as to give people the memory of murdering their best friend over a mistake is... wtf.
It's why O'Brien's having such a hard time (heh) over it - he'd never do that... but he has the memory of doing it and it drives him to suicide.
These aliens basically give people a "self fulfilling death-sentence" without having to actually execute people - the prisoners execute themselves.

DS9 season four has two tearjerker episodes that always work. One of them is intensely celebrated, but to me feels like a bit of a (lovely, but maudlin) melodrama. The other one, this one, hits like a ton of hammers, but never once plays a foul note. The only problem is that this one also feels like it should leave poor O'Brien really damaged and changed for the rest of the series. Instead, it's just a one off about needing and using therapy for trauma. Which, yes, is still one of the best episodes of Star Trek.

The reason O'Brien episodes are the best is probably because he is one of the most talented and convincing actors in all of Star Trek. For acting prowess, i put him up there with Nimoy, Stewart and Spiner. One thing that always bugged me about his friendship with Bashir, is that Alex Siddig is one of the worst actors in Trek, and that deficiency is amplified by playing against the much better acting of Colm Meaney.

And as far as villains? 😅 Stop trying to ROOT for a villain and just enjoy a villain for being a villain. Just because a villain is very compelling and well performed and written doesn't mean you have to be conflicted or feel you have to LIKE the villain. Just say if a villain is portrayed well they're portrayed well.
Anthony Hopkins in 1960 Psycho comes to mind or Hannibal Lecter. Some villainous characters and performances are just very well portrayed.
Edit: Anthony Perkins. 🤣 My bad.

A couple of things- as heartbreaking as seeing Jennifer die, it actually gives him closure. When his mother died, he was a child and she was just...gone.
Now, he's basically a man and can process his grief. This was a chance to see his mother as a woman outside the context of her being his mother. He got to see her more like the woman she was before he was born.

I'm not sure a two-parter would've helped it really. The biggest problem with the current version is "episode's over, so that's all wrapped up now". I feel like adding a second part would've just extended that to "okay, second part's over so NOW it's all wrapped up." They really needed the ability to just include writing about this aspect of the character for a whole seasons or so for it to work in that "long-term consequences aspect", and theses shows are just not designed to be produced and written that way.
