CHECK OUT THE SEASON FINALE ON PATREON NOW!!
I commented this a while back. I don't know if you monitor comments, but in season 5 there is a 2-parter that will be out of sync with your 2 episode format. It's not obvious because the episode names are "In Purgatory's Shadow" and "By Inferno's Light". If you want to watch them together you can watch the episodes either side of them together too, I've double checked and there are no spoilers whichever way you watch them.
If Ollie doesn't read comments but has mods or patreon users that talk to him, please pass it along.
Jeffrey Combs! The Man! The Myth! The Legend!
He is so good this episode!!!
Hard to believe he's also Brunt: SCA.
@@jasoncaldwell5627 FCA - Ferengi Commerce Authority
Weyoun is my favourite Vorta. There's something about him that is just so hypnotic and creepy. In his short existence (played by Jeffrey Combs! (Brunt etc)) he projects a lot.
I wish we saw more of him tbh.
DS9 sometimes gives us a great new character only to kill them off...
@@jasoncaldwell5627 ... "and then they did it again." :D
@@jasoncaldwell5627 RIP Weyoun.
I mean, we'll see Jeffrey again no doubt.
That mad lad loves playing assholes in Trek, and is always so good at it.
@@VieVentar We do see him play another character later in DS9 i think (I think at least two - one is a holodeck or dream sequence character). And he also played at least 1 on Voyager and I think two or even THREE on Enterprise.
The Quickening is such a moving episode and really elevates Julian to an heroic character.
The Iconian Gateways were featured in TNG's "Contagion" - the episode where they cross the Neutral Zone and the Enterprise and Romulan ship keep losing power - and Data has to control a launch pad to detonate... Picard uses one of the Gateways to sneak about the Romulan ship.
I'm pretty sure they reused the painting of future Paris from that episode in this one!
@@jasoncaldwell5627 yes which was used in Star Trek 6 (1991) out the window of the President's office.
EDIT: And I think probably used in We'll Always Have Paris.
@@sarcasticstartrek7719 Good eye. paramount never lets a good painting sit idle for too long. I wouldn't be surprised if it got modified (a common practice) for later use on Voyager or Enterprise. Just remove the tower....maybe add a bridge or something moving (another common practice- particularly with the Cardassian Capital painting).
There is indeed a LOT more to Bashir and his backstory. We'll learn more as time goes by.
It's amazing how Julian has matured since the first episode where he's SO green and pissing off Kira...😜
The scenes of bashir on the planet made me love his character even more. He’s just one of the best of us. Sort of the DS9 Picard. Noble, heroic, virtuous. But also someone we must protect. We need characters like Kira and Sisko who are more shades of gray so that the ones like bashir can be pure.
Re: The Quickening, you're slowly learning - if a brand new, very sympathetic, honest and lovely guest character appears on Star Trek.... yeah. xD
The Quickening is one of my favorite episodes of the entire franchise. It when Bashir changes from a pompous young man with immense medical skill to a doctor.
“He doesn’t have the blight!”
I cry every time.
McCoy is smiling in Heaven.
One of my favorite virus episodes of sci fi too. Our hero didn’t come up with a cure in an hour like normal - and the cure didn’t save the current victims! So much more realistic.
The Quickening is one of my all-time favorite episodes of DS9. It is a fantastic story for Bashir. I love his entire journey through this episode. Superior direction by Rene Auberjonois (gotta love that crane shot at the end!). I also love that this episode really had no bad guys in it. Say what you want about Trivean but he was releasing patients from their needless pain and suffering. The scene where he rushes in and the patients are in agony crying out his name gives me chills every time, and then to see him holding up that baby above the crowd…so good! Just a really great episode.
Yeah I don't see Trivean as a bad guy at all he was just doing his job and stopping his people from suffering the only way he could.
DS9 REALLY makes the best of location shoots- in both of these episodes- though in The Quickening, everything seems so BIG.
The VFX of the sunrises up trough the matte paintings were beautiful.
Makes you wonder what those people once had.
> Yeah I don't see Trivean as a bad guy at all he was just doing his job and stopping his people from suffering the only way he could.
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions It's a sad realisation and something that DS9 does more than once - life is very grey, not black and white.
Trivean was doing only what he knew he could do - alleviate suffering. If something is 100% fatal then let them go comfortably.
There's a modern day "culture war" over this brewing. Doctors have a thing "to do no harm". But that can be taken in lawyer talk to mean "keep them alive as long as possible by any means possible".
"do no harm" is not the same as "do what is right by the patient".
and "right" can be interpreted in 1000 different ways.
I don't have the answers to that and I don't pretend to. But I do know that watching this episode, I do at least *understand* Trivean. He is a character to be sympathetic toward, not hostile.
imo.
im 42. my mother was a nurse (retired now). In the 70s when she was in trauma / casuality wards, she has told me there'd be times when someone was so badly mangled - industrial accident, being run over at the chest etc - that the Consultants would ask everyone else except the Matron (head nurse) of the ward to leave the room - whilst Consultant, Matron and Doctor remained.
When they went back in, the patient would have died peacefully and of "natural causes". What actually happened was the heads of surgery, medicine and nursing agreed "there's no way" and ... "assisted the person" into peace via and injection.
Obviously this was never "official" and technically under UK law would be some sort of murder / manslaughter charge. And these days it's not possible to do (legit, if anyone is worried - it's not possible these days).
I cannot say or not say what was right or wrong in those situations.
I do know that if i was faced with 100% [shit life forever, and it'll only get worse until the day you die] - I'd like the ability to make my OWN decisions.
And that is not evil. And neither was Trivean. I can imagine some circumstances where I'd be grateful for a Trivean.
Yeah, one of the best Julian episodes. And Dax was better here than usual, her pointing out Julian's arrogance was scorching but undeniable.
@@silikon2 But she's not a bitch about it- she's on his side 100% for the support- and tough love- that he needed just then.
Sometimes, it's only a good friend that'll tell you your fly is down, y'know?
Shout out to Jeffery Combs who plays Weyoun. This is an actor whose role other role on Star Trek: Enterprise is legendary, and his DS9 character is tenacious to say the least.
Come to Quarks, Quarks is fun, come to Quarks, don't walk...RUN!
I want that mug.
@@jasoncaldwell5627 I think there was a limited production run of that mug. I don't know if it was official merchandise or if it played the song when you tipped the mug.
@@Tylerpierre99 i recall going to Quark's Bar at the old MGM Trek Experience and not finding one. I still have some isoleniar rods though.
A philosophical difference about discipline: Jem 'Hadar commander kills his soldier for getting out of line, Sisko sends Worf to his room and grounds him for the rest of the mission. (I wonder if he took away his PS4 and his Klingon operas on iTunes as well.)
My old man must have had some Jem "Hadar blood in him.
When I started watching The Quickening when it was first released, it looked like it was going to be a boring episode, yeah yeah Julian doing his doctor stuff, typically not my cup of tea, boy was I mistaken, I was shocked how moving it was and watching how much pain Ekoria had to endure to see her child, left me broken inside. This episode stayed with me for a long time
I remember when it cost me over $40 to buy 2 episodes of DS9 on Video tape. They were uk imports because it took over a month for it to release here in Australia and l couldn’t wait. Same thing use to happen with voyager but luckily they caught up to england and l was able to only pay $20 for 2 episodes.
Omg, I remember the monthy release vhs tapes. Our local video store had a lot of fans so they would get it in every month and we'd have to rush to reserve it asap.
@@stackels97l use to reserve a copy to buy at the video store. I remember on the way home the levels of excitement were different depending on the episode description on the back.
It was the cover of a DS9 tape 4.4 Little green men/Starship Down. That got me into paying $40 for the uk imports.
Omg it was like £13 for two episodes!!! The bad old days!😂 The artwork for the Voyager VHS tapes was lovely though.
These are two of my favorite episodes. Season 4 of DS9 is so great.
The Quickening has always been a favourite episode for me. It's such a great take on medicine in the 24th century. We're so used to Trek medicine being a wave of an instrument, or a quick hypospray and a cure, but we get to see what it's like when they come up against a really difficult disease, and the story and production is solid.
To the death?
No, to the pain! (- Westley)
Prince Humperdink, who was on DS9!
( Weyoun appears )
End of episode approaches
( Weyoun dies )
Well that's that
2 of my all time favourite DS9 episodes of all time back to back. Which was especially great as they came sold on the same VHS tape back in the day when you could only fit 2 episodes on a tape... If it had been TNG or Voyager with their stupid cliffhanger endings to seasons messing up the numbering I would have had to buy two tapes. But DS9 was smart and only did the two parters as season openers.
Once thing I'm glad about To the Death is it's bloodless. They originally wanted to show blood and be quite violent but they were over-ruled - and given we're seeing people being "decapitated" by axes and all sorts, that's probably for the best. Keeps it only a 12 rating, not a 15+.
Funny, I was just thinking they should have shown some blood on the blades. They didn't need decapitations, but a little blood would have gone a long way- particularly when Sisko was cut.
@@jasoncaldwell5627 I'm not expert but I was around when the episode aired and TV back then was a lot more "mediated". What you could or could not show before certain timeslots (and this could depend on if you were "cable" or not - "affiliate" or not) or in my case in the UK, would mean you have stuff edited for violence/blood as TNG/DS9 were shown at 6pm on Wednesdays on BBC2 - directly AFTER kids programming (Cartoons - teenage turtles etc) finished at 6PM on BBC1 - it meant this episode could be aired in its full, without cuts of entire shots of blood on a corpse.
It DOES mean, though, that it is "too clean" and "too unrealistic" - like, how bad can the Jem'Hadar be if any random person can kill them with a bloodless punch?
These days on streaming or blu-ray or such, it's easier to show blood and violence. And TBH Trek CAN do it (TNG Conspiracy, TNG Yesterday's Enterprise, TNG Redemption, TNG Genesis) but that single shot that is 4 seconds long - if it is the centre-piece of an action/mystery plot - if it has to be cut for [geographical and cultural audience issues], it can destroy an episode.
Way of the Warrior does this, too, btw.
@@sarcasticstartrek7719Apparently the First snapping his subordinate’s neck was cut for UK showings.
@@BEBruns I can believe that - 6pm on Wednesdays after kids' shows ...
@@BEBruns might have been on the BBC but it was shown in full glory on Sky One, I remember it.
TWO OF MY FAVORITE EPISODES!
To The Death! Alright, Ollie- I've been hyping this one for weeks now- the callback to the Iconian Gateways, killer soundtrack, amazing new sets, Jem Hadar! An upper pylon destroyed! Sisko threatened! Drug use! O'Brien's speech! And best of all- we get to see Jeffrey Combs return- as Weyoun the Vorta!
A shady character if there ever was one.
Definitely an action packed episode.
We finally get some nice dialogue with Dax and the Jem Hadar. I've barely seen her this season.
Levar Burton knocked this out of the park for direction. I've seen this at least ten times over the years but, having just rewatched it now, it still stands up as a great episode with fast pacing, snappy dialogue and high stakes.
The Quickening! If there's an episode that defines a character, it's this one for Julian.
A lesser doctor (like a certain red haired ship's physician) would have gone home, filed a report and forgotten the entire planet- but NOT our man Bashir! Dax was a true friend here- and thee wasn't a peep about the crush Julian used to have on her, which I liked a lot- they became friends and colleagues.
The acting from everyone was outstanding and the woman that played Ikoria in particular was sooooo good at conveying her pain without needing to make a sound- the way she shook as they turns on her side in one scene is so believable...
The final scene where Sisko comes by to offer his congratulations but sees the determination and sadness in Julian so keeps it low key once again shows why he's the best Captain in Trek. No speeches, no pep talk- he just let his man work the problem.
René Auberjonois directed this masterpiece of Trek and it's an episode worth rewatching.
Two "S-TIER" episodes from a season full of real winners. (except The Muse)
Worf, "Prune juice, extra large." Receives a child's small.
Glad to hear you hate Weyoun. That’s the right kind of attitude lol. Jeffrey Combs is awesome. That’s why he’s such a treasured guest actor on the show and Star Trek as a whole.
How could ANYONE hate Weyoun?
Of all the make Vorta, he's the least punchable.
@@jasoncaldwell5627 There's that lady Vorta from The Ship - she was quite nice.
@@sarcasticstartrek7719 Polite, but not nice. When the very first thing they say is a lie, the rest of the relationship can only go downhill.
@@jasoncaldwell5627 True.
In fact, I'm thinking back - other than Eris (the first one we meet in season 2) who is playing the role of "victim" and thus overly sympathtic - I think I'd pretty much like to go drinking with ANY Vorta. Assuming they weren't here to enslave me to The Dominion.
Every single one seems to be interesting and have their own unique personality quirks - Eris ("The Jem'Hadar"), Borath ("The Search"), Keevan ("later episode"), Yelgrun ("later episode") and Luaran ("later episode") each had their own traits, their own ... personality.
I like how the Vorta are seen as individuals.
Even the Jem'Hadar have individual personalities that we come across. Each is a person.
Which makes their "growth" and "usage" all the more sad, in context.
Keep an eye on Weyoun's actor, Jeffrey Combs. He would go on to play a considerable number of Trek roles, and he's often very difficult to spot. Total chameleon.
He also was considered for the role of Riker.
My favourite is when he goes blue XD
We've already seen him a few times as Brunt
@@Calzaki Yeah, it was a LONG time before I realized that was Combs. The prosthetics are part of it, but he plays that character so differently.
@@silikon2 I love that there's actually an episode where he plays both Weyoun and Brunt in the same episode. Unfortunately they were never in the same scene though, THAT would have been crazy cool.
Bashir: "Come back at the end of the episode, we may have a cure by then!"
"TTD" definitely had a great WTF moment and we learned a lot about the Jem'Hadar (Their First was in "The Mod Squad)
"The Quickening" I believe was to show that Starfleet's Almighty technology can't fix everything, and for Bashir to evolve and grow, and sometimes a pragmatic solution is better than defeat.
3:25 you know things are serious when they replay that Defiant "reverse out launch and head to the wormhole" sequence that they cribbed from "the search" part 1. The last time they used that was "the die is Cast".
That sounds like J Hertzler in the episode, too.
Weyoun is such a great antagonist, you just love to hate him, great actor and great writing
It's Weyoun!
MY DUDE WEYOUN! Jeffrey Combs!
To the death is one of my favourites. Especially with the introduction of Wayun.
WEYOUN IS MY DUDE! Jeffrey Combs!
And in this episode we meet the second character introduced in season 4 who was meant to be a throw away, one episode appearance but went on to define DS9 from this moment onwards, between him and the character we met a few weeks ago you have the stony of the alpha and gamma quadrants
I am so excited for you about to enter these next few seasons. All of ds9 is solid, this is one of the best Star Treks for really good writing but they really nailed it in the fifth and sixth seasons and I’m so glad that you are posting these videos so we can join you on the journey! I hope you go on with Star Trek. I really enjoy seeing the shows/movies from your perspective.
Oh the rug-pull lol. "The founders controll the Jem'Hadar so the Founders must have wanted this..."
Nope and NOPE!
DS9 will do this a lot (Kassidy, Eddington, the Rebel Jem'Hadar, Klingon war...) Never assume anything, especially if it gets in the way of a good story.
It's great to see that the Jem Hadar serve as much by choice and pride as anything.
It's very much what Dave FILONI brought to the Clones in Star Wars.
The slaves are often ahead of their masters.
Jeffrey Combs is a Legend
Karate chops promised...karate chops delivered. 😢
Bashir: "I couldn't cure the Quickening completely. It's too insidious"
Romulans: "hmm, interesting!" 🤔
It's insidious... Just like the Federation.
Thank you, Oliver! 🖖 I love how STAR TREK actors directed both of these episodes... LeVar Burton and Rene Auberjonois. 🔸 I remember learning in grade school about that Christmas incident from WWI you mentioned. Eventually I saw documentaries and a *great* movie about it. If you're interested in the flick, check out JOYEUX NOËL (2005). 🎄
first movie i saw Jeffery Combs in was in "From Beyond" great movie based on one of H.P.. Lovecraft stories. well worth watching
I never realized that Jeffery Combs played the main Vortah, but now I can't unsee it!!
You are correct, it is Combs like "he combs his hair."
Oddly enough, when I was a kid we lived down the street from Coombs Ave, which meant I spent a large chunk of my childhood arguing with people about how to pronounce my own name :P
To the Death has one of my favourite openings. Everyone is all business. I don't think the episode quite lives up to the promise of the opening but it's still good. The Quickening is a great episode. Just brilliant character stuff.
The quickening is a good representation of Canadian healthcare.
13:50 Weyoun certainly got awful close to Odo there for a second. Did he touch him on the arm/shoulder? What was that about?😉
For future reference, Auberjonois is pronounced oh-bare-zhon-wah. Primary emphasis on the last syllable, secondary on the first.
You don't see the Vorta very often, mostly because there aren't as many of them as there are Jem'Hadar. In terms of how it plays in the Dominion: the Vorta are the carrot, the Jem'Hadar are the stick.
The Quickening really shows Bashir's heart. He tries so hard!
“To the Death” is one of the few Trek episodes (the other being “Blood Oath”) that were cut for violence. I wonder if the cut footage exists? I’m really enjoying you watching DS9 - for me its the best of the series.
Trevean looks just like my uncle Dennis
To the Death does give us some depth to the Vorta and Jem Haddar. Curiously the first Vorta we saw had telekinetic powers, but that never comes up again. I think they decided she was a "one-off" experiment.
I took longer to warm up to Bashir than most do. I really disliked him in Season one. He just struck me as arrogant and borderline on being a harasser. But I think this one finally, mostly, won me over. And it also underlined how truly horrific the Dominion can be to those who defy them. (The Quickening makes me think of Highlander, but it was also a term for when fetal movements can be felt by the mother. The second meaning might be relevant.)
There is more to the Teddy Bear. 😊
I definitely recommend you play star trek online, you do get to meet the iconians and learn about the history of the first jem'hadar (granted sto is not cannon it was later adapted to a point in star trek picard)
You should do a reaction to a music video from a band named Sabaton. The song is called Christmas Truce.
I have heard that before! I have a friend who is a massive Sabaton fan
How will he get Odo back to the founders? 🤔 Re watch that scene very closely...
Hello, Weyoun!
Somehow "To the Death" fell flat for me, but I'm not sure why. The ingredients sounded good but somehow it felt perfunctory.
I guess it kind of was a trite story. "They have to work with their enemy to defeat a common enemy."
The Iconian angle was slightly interesting but as far as the plot goes it was an irrelevant McGuffin. Obviously a nice callback, but still.
Even the Jem Hadar assassinating Weyoun was obvious almost from the beginning.
I always appreciated how The Quickening handled the issue of euthanasia. A very sensitive topic but it really shows that it's not a black and white issue. Julian is outraged at first when he sees what the local doctor is doing but the episode makes it clear that this man in not a villain. Trevean is a good man in a horrible situation who has nothing but bad options in front of him. Everything he does is to ease the suffering of his people and let them die with as little pain and as much comfort and dignity as he can manage. His commitment to his people is also shown at the end once Julian develops a vaccine. Trevean is all in on getting it out there and ending the Blight for future generations.

This is the first episode with Jeffrey Combs we loved him so much we asked him back again sorry spoiling

what really has escaped me completely is why starfleet doesnt have any kind of real groundtroops. their security personell on board their ships seems so weak in comparison to even todays military. okay, they have much better weapons, but they wear no armor, no personal shields or any kind of protection or enhancements. especially during wartime, this feels so dumb....
