Growing up in a low income household you took what you got and this game was on sale when I got it as one of my 4 games total. It was greatly underrated.
I traded at kid Biofreaks for Mystical Ninja at a trailer park once, I didn't have a memory card so I had to beat Mystical Ninja without turning the power off on the N64. Was on the space level and the power flickered, rip.

I'd agree if it weren't for the softlock you can get yourself in VERY easily towards the latter half of the game
@@omegafreddy12 i got softlocked. never went back to the game. but I probably should! right after i can freakin figure out how to get past the cemetery/church in shadowgate 64.
Skeletons on motorcycles does seem strange, but if you play as carrie, you'll go through an area called the tower of science it's got auto turret guns, conveyor belts, creatures in huge test tubes. A lot of lore/concepts within other titles show that dracula is a man of science/knowledge. His technology and knowledge is far ahead of society. I mean typical cop out kind of thing, but that explains them. I generally don't stop to explain things in comments like a try hard, but my love for the franchise gets me more than a little hyped when people wonder about it.
I remember playing and beating this game. If you buy too many items from the merchant, the merchant becomes a boss that you have to fight before Dracula.
Woah that is a cool concept they should add that to other castlevenia games
And if you use a lot of sun cards or moon cards, you fight vincent before dracula
I think I “beat” the game twice, before I found out that the game is longer on the higher difficulty.
@@richardp5920 this is why I quit playing on easy mode on every game I ever played after this. Lol.
That’s a really cool concept for horror-themed games. Although it makes me think of the asshole shop owner from Spelunky who shoots to kill if you take any items without paying, or accidentally set a bomb off or kill an enemy too close to his store. I really hate that guy.

The funny thing about the motorcycle skeleton is that Dawn of Sorrow, the last Castlevania chronologically (it happens in 2036), barely has any modern/futuristic stuff, the developers just know that those things feel out of place in these games, you're still using swords, holy powers and magic.
You could get an rpg in that game tho
I know this comment is old, but the original Dracula novel is set in 1890, and they had motorcycles (and coca cola) at the time.
The game has some pretty neat alternate scenarios, like if you buy too much from the demon or use too many time change cards. Vincent will go to sleep at the wrong time and you fight him as a vampire. Love this series!
That nitroglycerin escort challenge reminded me of the flower quest from
Hollow Knight. I got wrecked trying to do it until I looked up a strat where you kill all of the enemies BEFORE you carry the flower, and then it was easy as pie.
One thing I love about N64 era games like these is the aesthetic, I love the fonts used , the occult imagery, the enemies, the music, etc. Games like this, Heretic/Hexen, Shadow Man, Blood, Gauntlet Legends, Powerslave, Quake, Diablo 1& 2, games don't look or feel like this anymore. The closest thing to this in 2022 is mods like Bloom. I miss dark fantasy games of the 90's!
You should check out Graven, it's a new game made in that old aesthetic.

Shame Thab played as Reinhardt, I think the game is a lot more playable/enjoyable as Carrie with her homing magic attacks.
That’s what I was thinking I liked the game a bit more with her back in the day when I finished this game multiple times
I loved this game. Beat it multiple times. But first time ever, the rose garden puzzle held me up for forever. I think it gets everyone

A comment about the music on this game: since the game's world is "open" (not in the strict modern sense), having a same tune for an area would be kinda redundant and terrible after a while since you use a lot of time going back and forth in the same place until you solve all the puzzles and move into the boss.
So, more than the N64 not being capable of good sound (the very intro of this game is proof that is not, or just listen to F-Zero X's OST too), is it more of a choice from the devs. This game is very atmospheric. It might not seem like it now, but back when it came out: it was the first Castlevania to be in 3D, so it had large open areas, you could scout other areas through windows or gratings, some rooms on the inside of the castle made sense (even to the point of being empty), the garden maze is actually a small maze where you're constantly being hounded by enemies, there's a day/night cycle, etc... this game has a lot more going on than people are willing to give credit for.
But I'm glad you went around finishing it for this challenge. I'm seeing every video and loving it!

This is one of those games that has a reputation for being bad and was nice to hear Thab speak somewhat positively about it. I had this game as a kid and the Frankenstein chainsaw dude in the maze really terrified me, I wrote about him in lots of "spooky stories" at School
Each character gets three unique levels to themselves. Personally, I like all three of Carries unique levels more, but I find her too easy. The (good) ending is also different between the characters and two of the bosses are different too. It's definitely worth playing the game with each character IMO
everyone always says mario party will make their hands hurt. this games platforming literally cut my palm open. but I thought it was great the sequel is even better too

@@keyamazed1038 Honestly not too bad, it’s just super basic but it has some fun elements. The battle system is awesome, cool environments and it’s got an old school appeal. I almost think of it like a 3D version of something like the first Dragon Quest. The GBC Quest game actually has a story and it’s better, not great or anything but worth a play through.
About the final form... quote: "His sobriquet Dracula (meaning “son of Dracul”) was derived from the Latin draco (“dragon”) after his father's induction into the Order of the Dragon."
This one's my favorite N64 game. Love every bit of it, even the slowdown when too many enemies spawn
Running away from a horde of skeletons all traveling in slow motion is great because it's funny every single time

Ive always really liked this game. High difficulty and controls are a bit wonky, but the aesthetic was super neat and the game still felt fun

I like how beast didn't even care the boss jumps into a pit to raise a platform for us. O was cracking up lol.
one of my favourite castlevania games. i think the lack of soundtrack just added to the atmosphere with certain areas.

OG Castlevania 64 is pretty bad nowadays, but I recently played Legacy of Darkness with all characters and I still believe it holds up - A lot of levels were redesigned for the better (Clock Tower especially), camera felt much more competent, sliding is much faster and became a valid way of dodging attacks, there's more content and alternate costumes for the characters, subweapons could be upgraded for extra power....It's a big list of improvements, and they all felt very noticeable.
Also the default character can become a werewolf if you have no subweapon.
@@TimedRevolver Cornell can turn into a wolf any time if the player presses L, even if he's holding a subweapon, it's just that once you do, there's no way to cancel the transformation until your gems run out. Or something like a cutscene happens.

I remember renting this game for a week and beating it when it came out. I had to fight the salesmen as a mini boss at the end because I bought too many items from his shop.

The game was supposedly going to be released in November 1998 the game was ready but they didnt want to go head2head with Zelda so they delayed it to January 99 when Zelda stock was low waiting for new shipments.....it was kinda clever and it worked a bit. This game sold around 650k copies which is pretty good for a 3rd party N64 exclusive.
I'm excited for micro machines 64, I haven't heard of that IP in ages. I have fond memories playing various micro machines games and I've heard the N64 version is pretty decent.

I have only play the 3 nes castlevanias and this and I kinda like this one aswell. It was a well enough attempt to port the 2d castlevania to 3d but I think they stick to much to the formula and didn't notice some stuff don't translate very well, but still it was very enjoyble for me and also I like the lack of music and ambience it gives a very spooky vibe for the time
This game is kind of the definition of “It’s N64, so it’s required to be 3D”
That's the biggest reason why N64 is one of my least favorite Nintendo console.

@@roynijssen7813 I loved the 64. But I believe for a time Nintendo did argue against 2D games for the 64 until they realized that was a stupid thing to request....
@@roynijssen7813 this was just the era. Has nothing to do with n64. 3d graphics were new and exciting and everyone wanted to move on from 2d
Both ps1 and n64 still had 2d sidescrollers but they werent what the majority of consumers at the time wanted, and saturn had alot of 2d games due to 3d games being hard to develop for the console

Haven't played this one but that Dracula fight seems more or less in line with the usual Dracula fights, I haven't played every Castlevania game but of the ones I have played his head is always the weak spot and there's also always been a crazy second form like the one seen here.
The tears were brown. I think maybe even chocolate. Looks like a fun tour of a wealthy mans candy mansion... What could go wrong?
I have an complete N64 collection (excluding Japan and USA games since I am from the Netherlands), but i haven't completed every game. So it is nice to see the ending without needing doing it for myself for every game.

I remember borrowing this game from my sister's boyfriend and getting to the part where you have to carry that explosive stuff but never getting past that part. I got so frustrated on that part that I gave up and bought Final Fantasy 8 that weekend and never played Castlevania 64 again even though I loved the Castlevania series.

You're lucky you get to play this first, instead of Legacy of Darkness. It is the "director's cut" version of it, and there are more things there. Including a new main character with his own story.
As a side note, Dracul is Latin for Dragon, so this is ironically the most accurate one.

Jeez dude that ox thing boss fight is some messed up shit. Gotta say that was one of the most unsettling things I've seen on the N64. It's easily overtaken that creepy turok 3 intro where the logo turns into the guts and organs or whatever it was. That always creeped me out even though I played some really messed up and violent games back as far as then.

It's funny, this game used to be infamous and considered basically the worst Castlevania ever until Castlevania 2 attracted a hate bandwagon in the late 2000s. One of my best online chatroom buddies had this as his personal favorite Castlevania game.
