@@Phoenix_1991 I admit I'm in the minority that thinks that Banjo-Tooie is actually better than Kazooie, but even if you don't agree, how can you possibly think it's *that much worse?* They're both incredibly good games that are among the best of their era - not just on the N64.
Yeah you can half tell there's a three week deadline on this to say the least. Ranking games is, of course, subjective, but must admit there's some truly insane placements in this, as in a surprising amount are around 80-100 places out from where the general consensus would be.
You CANT do this list subjectively, unless you played ALL the games, and no one has done that, (or at least not long enough each game to have a real solid opinion on all) SO you have to do your homework on the internet, read reviews, see scores, playtroughs, to do it right
This list is so busted that I don't know whether to give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down so I'll just leave a comment and a fave until I figure out what it deserves.
F-Zero X should be WAY higher than 54th or whatever it was. Play it today, it holds up amazingly well. 60 frames per second with 30 racers, procedurally generated tracks meaning it is literally infinite, it's a stone cold classic. On that note, totally agree with WWF No Mercy being so high, it's amazing, shame about the glitch that wipes your save. If you were alive in the 90s, No Mercy really was the perfect game at the perfect time. Top 10 was pretty good in this list. My weird random game growing up was Forsaken. I honestly think it should be lower than 150 or whatever it was. The game itself was okay, but no save data, 10 minutes of adverts at startup, and a shit story should lower it. I do love the character names though. Gauntlet is really fun if you're playing with friends.
KI Gold had tight and crisp controls, and a training mode to help players master the moves. It also didn’t artificially level its playing field, the way a game ranked way higher (NBA Hangtime, made by Midway’s cranks) did.
@@Sharkie68 KI Gold got a lot of hate back when it came out. People wanted to play KI 2 at home and instead got a mid port with dull washed out backgrounds. Considering what people thought the N64 could do it was a disappointment at the time. Then you had the anti-2D and "fighting games are boring and played out" bias from the media as well.
The bit about "it’s not even the developer’s fault that it sucks" on the Superman 64 section -- sorry, it's not your fault, but I have to call this out every time I see it. This fabricated lie has been repeated so often (including here) it's now accepted as fact and has rewritten this game's lore. The source of this lie is from Eric Caen, of Titus Interactive, who gave a magazine interview some years ago where he claimed the reason Superman 64 was such a pile of dogshit was *not* because Titus definitely were woefully incompetent developers, way out of their depth and with a long history of making the most appalling videogames based on licences to double up on their investments. No, sir. When put on the spot he instead dismissed it as someone else's fault: Warner's! Despite the fact Titus spent over TWO YEARS developing this absolute turd. The worst part of the very same interview was Caen claiming that Superman 64 made him "a lot of money", so at the end of the day it was a "success", in his eyes. Consumers be damned, and this is how retrospective PR can work. Say it with me, people: Superman 64 sucks, because the now bankrupt Titus Interactive, sucked. The end.
Frankly, given WBs track record over the years, I believe him, especially when you take into account the vastly superior PS1 version they were unable to publish, which actually did seem to improve on many of the originals problems. Yes, they had two years to work on it, but when you have to keep redoing work constantly because WB vetoes it and sends you back to the drawing board, that's a lot of wasted time they had no control over. Could be you're right, and he's just covering his ass, but this totally sounds like something WB would do.
@@Onslaught524 There's bound to be a pinch of truth in both sides of the argument of course. At the end of the day it's excuses. A professional developer handles publisher issues and gets on with the work. The fact Titus didn't include any of the elements WB were supposedly insisting upon, doesn't reflect well on Caen, even if he wasn't a notorious liar. Superman 64 is the product of a team totally out of their depth, or just not trying. Sounds exactly like a Titus game to me.
You haven't disproven anything, you're just saying it's a lie without backing it up. Shifting blame, especially to shitbags like WB is not uncommon, but it doesn't make him a liar. He has a more reliable source (himself) than you do (yourself).
The fact that there were two other N64 games deemed worse then Superman 64 makes this list completely invalid. Superman 64 is complete trash and nothing will ever be worse then that.
As great as Goldeneye was with a superior campaign, I still vote for Perfect Dark because of its pvp and co-op. I worked third shift night audit at a hotel in Phoenix back in 2001, and the security guard and me logged a thousand hours finishing all 30 co-op challenges, and he smashed his controller when I skunked him 10-0 in the one-hit pistol kills pvp, scoring the tenth point with a bareknuckle smack to the head. Man, I miss those nights.
Probably the greatest overlooked game of all time. Revolutionized so much. Way more than GoldenEye. Counter operative was a wild concept. Only ever heard of it so to a friend recommendation.
Fun Fact: Goin Quackers has a serious technical issue where the music plays completely incorrectly, with lots of midi errors, corrupted instrument samples and more. The game is actually a port of the Dreamcast/PC version (that actually has some great, underrated music!), but has a few original songs that to this day are not as audible as they should be. The game's TCRF article explains a lot of the music errors. It's crazy!
Personally I watch these lists to get commentary on each entry. Skipping through entries just doesn't feel right, specially because the N64 had so few games, and even the jankiest of duds are a treasure trove of nostalgia for many. I know that would have made the list like 4 hours long, but I would have gladly sat through every single minute. I hope an extended cut of the list comes out some time.
Banjo Tooie 114th place?? Really? REALLY?? Its in my top 5 games still to this day. Its a masterpiece and even better that Banjo Kazooie. They must have been drunk...
Goemon's Great Adventure, Banjo Tooie and Rayman 2 being lower than Quest 64... I'm at a loss for words. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is awesome so it's great to see it's relatively high placement, though. Also Conker is still fun, I played it relatively recently. The only chapter I have problems with is Spooky, it is not very fun but the idea is cool. Chameleon Twist is legitimately underrated and I think it's better than it's sequel but they are both fun. This list is ALL over the place.
Quest64 deserves props for its battle mechanics, encouraging players to be more proactive. By this grace alone, it deserves a spot among the top 100. Better ranked than any of the games you quoted is highly questionable, though.
@@Polemodrome I honestly need to give quest 64 another try, I've seen a lot of good defenses for it lately and I only played it once as a rental as a kid, so I definitely wasn't the best judge.
@@tornekotaloon9732 Perhaps the biggest criticism you can oppose Q64 is how dull and linear the world mapping can be. At any rate, we can safely agree that Ogre Battle 64 is superior.

I'm going to call out shenanigans on the Turok 1 controls. There was no dual analog sticks when it released so no one would have known better. PS1 DS didn't come out till 8/97 Turok came out in 2/97. I also remember the first time I played any first person shooters with dual analog it felt odd since I was so used to Turok and Goldeneye using left stick to aim and the right c's to move and strife.
Rush 2 is one of the most unique and fun racing games I have ever played. If they made a new one today I would definitely run out to get it. The shortcuts were unique and you could do tricks with cars.
This list was clearly made by people that didn’t grow up with a 64. There’s some solid games buried toward the bottom under some absolute drivel. If you’re gonna make an ambitious list like this, at least have enough knowledge and experience to pull it off. It looks like you hit shuffle and then dragged and dropped games you recognized.
I call bs on WWF WrestleMania 2000 being so far down and under WWF Warzone, WWF Attitude, and WCW vs. nWo World Tour... They didn't play these games at all.
My few disagreements with this list: 1. The fact that Perfect Dark is not #1 on the list is crazy! That game did SO many things that no other FPS did during that time. I feel like it was even the 1st FPS to include actual reload animations(correct me if I'm wrong). It was Literally better than Goldeneye in EVERY way except nostalgia and "setting the bar". 2. Both Flying Dragon and Fighters Destiny 2 should have been around the 50's. 3. Majora's Mask should at least be somewhere under #15.
Ya know… that game was way better than most kart racers due to having a narrative and plot not to mention tons of variety in gameplay. I loved the overworld aspect was fun to explore. Kind of wish it got a proper sequel
Yeah! Also I love how skill-based it is. No random items! You get the exact item you choose, and you can choose to hang onto it and try to upgrade it too. Lotta opportunity for strategizing your power-up routing against tough bosses. Also the silver coin races are amazing, forcing you to take every alternate route on a stage in one race. @@tenkenroo
There are some on here that were really low and shouldn't be. Such as Turok 2 at 205. Turok 2's multiplayer was amazing. Shooting people with the cerebral bore was one of the N64's greatest experiences.
I'm so happy Space Station Silicon Valley got such a high rating. The soundtrack is incredible, the gameplay is zany and unique, and the humor is some weird midway point between GTA and Monty Python.
My only gripe is that the NTSC retail version has a bug that prevents 100% completion. Otherwise, a very unique and fun game. I have an itch to play it again.
As much controversy was in the ordering of titles, for me the biggest shocker was Tetrisphere. That game is one of my favorite puzzle games ever, perhaps tied with Tetris Effect at #1. I definitely wish we'd get a modern sequel.
Heck yeah! Tetrisphere is great! It's one of the main reasons I still own an N64 today. It is hard to get other people into it though. I show them the mechanics, and they say, "This isn't tetris!" Yeah, it isn't. They don't like the glowing shadow thing or the lives system. The pieces aren't even all tetrominoes. The trick to enjoying this game is just to forget it's called "Tetris" and take it as a unique falling block game experience. Folks looking for an actual 3D Tetris game could try Block Out. th-cam.com/video/2Tn_WoNxG2M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=csRSLnY8GADJhOC- It's like the Descent of Tetris games because you can rotate the pieces along 3 different axes. It also doesn't exclusively use tetrominoes.
I still have the soundtrack in my playlists to this day! Amazing electronic music! Crazy good and varied gameplay too!! I loooved renting it and playing all weekend
@@michaelreardon303 weirdly I have never really liked any Tetris game at all.. never played any for more than 15 mins.. yet Tetrisphere I kept and kept playing, unlocking and finishing everything in the game. Love it so much more than the basic Tetris gameplay!
I love Tetrisphere as well. Btw, ever try Tetris Battle Gaiden for Super Famicom? It's a pretty unique take on 2 player verses, especially since you're drawing from the same next piece queue, so if you time your placements right you can deny your opponent any of the good pieces.
It would have been funny to put like three games in between Elmo's Number Journey and Elmo's Letter Adventure. Like they all just happen to be slightly better than one and slightly worse than the other
31:43 I miss Rush 2049. I've seen it available in arcades still but the N64 version was just so awesome. Not only did they keep the stunt mode from Rush 2 but they added the battle mode where your cars can get equipped with different weapons to attack each other and destroy each other. My brothers and friends and I had so much fun with the four-player multiplayer on Rush 2049 on battle mode
Rush 2, one of my favorite racing games just with midnight club 3 and Cruis’n world. I miss this kind of arcade gameplay style. I have spend hundreds of hours with Forza and GT series, but I don’t feel that it’s fun like others.
I can’t really remember playing the second rush although I’m sure I did? I had San Francisco rush on my 64 and me and my friends played it every day !! It was such a fun and challenging, easy to play, difficult to master game !! Beetle, adventure, racing, or HSV adventure racing. If you’re in Australia, we’re also two of the funnest games ever.!!
The best thing about Hard Drive doing a list like this is that if there's a game placement you don't agree with, you can just say it's satire and doesn't count.
How is Hey You Pikachu that high on the list? I mean it's charming and all, but it's incredibly shallow and is barely a game. It's really slow and Pikachu just keeps doing whatever he wants. So yeah, it's cute, but I would actually call it a bad game. But I'm glad someone else appreciated New Pokémon Snap as much as I did. It's the undisputed GOTY of 2021 and I would say it's absolutely the best Pokémom game since Black2/White2.
Had serious reservations when I saw Body Harvest and Shadows of the Empire were so low, but I seriously lost my shit when I saw Turok 2 didn't crack 200. For God's sake, it's over 50 places below Turok 1, and there is no possible arguement for Turok 2 being a worse game than the first. I have to agree, this list seems more like RNG than a serious critique.
It was such a fresh game, as Victorian London is a perfect horror setting and is yet so underused. At the time, this city was so glorious and yet so dystopian, creepy and dirty at the same time...
I actually really enjoyed star wars episode 1: battel for naboo when I was a kid. I remember spending many hours playing it and having a real good time. Same goes for Battletanx. A ton of fun with that one.

Fun watch tho
Multiplayer of tooie is so fun
There’s nothing wrong with Turok’s controls. It’s actually the preferred style for speed running goldeneye and perfect dark.
This rank gets my #1 among the worst ranks of all time, congratulations!
It's appalling. Fucking Monopoly and generic sports game clones near the top 100 and platformers that still hold up are in the bottom 200.
It's authentically terrible. Imagine genuinely thinking that there are over 100 games on the N64 better than Banjo-Tooie. It's fucking insanity.
@@kevinb5417 This is made even worse when you consider than the N64 doesn't even have a vast library. So it's almost like saying ''almost every game on the N64 is better than Banjo-Tooie''.
@@Phoenix_1991 I admit I'm in the minority that thinks that Banjo-Tooie is actually better than Kazooie, but even if you don't agree, how can you possibly think it's *that much worse?* They're both incredibly good games that are among the best of their era - not just on the N64.

@@JRAw89 I know yeah it discredits the whole list especially when you look at be some of the shitty games that are above it
Yeah you can half tell there's a three week deadline on this to say the least. Ranking games is, of course, subjective, but must admit there's some truly insane placements in this, as in a surprising amount are around 80-100 places out from where the general consensus would be.
You CANT do this list subjectively, unless you played ALL the games, and no one has done that, (or at least not long enough each game to have a real solid opinion on all) SO you have to do your homework on the internet, read reviews, see scores, playtroughs, to do it right
@@enriquedossantos3283Which clearly hasn't been done.
Y'all are insane not having Banjo Tooie even in the top 100. Entertaining as always though

I never even played either game and I know that it should atleast be top 50...
Same with Turok 2
I didn't think it was good tbh but that far down was pretty bullshit
The moment when Hey You Pikachu apparently has more priority than Banjo Tooie…
... I was waiting for Banjo-Tooie and Majora's Mask to be #1 and #2, with Tooie at the top. What seriously is this BS list?
i cant believe i spent an hour watching a list, in which i disagree with every single ranking
F-Zero X at #54, Mario Kart 64 at #44, with many shitty games ranked higher - what a troll list.
I'm very shocked KI Gold was very low in this ranking. One of the fav fighting game for the N64.
KI Gold had tight and crisp controls, and a training mode to help players master the moves. It also didn’t artificially level its playing field, the way a game ranked way higher (NBA Hangtime, made by Midway’s cranks) did.
Out of all the wild takes, this one shocked me the most. This cannot be in the 50 worst N64 games.
@@NotaPizzaGRLYea but the game itself was great there's no way there's 241 N64 games better

The moment I saw Hey, You Pikachu ranked that high on the list, I immediately realized this is actually a really bad worst to best ranking!
Pokemon Stadium outside of the top 100 hurts man
Especially since it has better rental movesets than Stadium 2.
The end.
Amazing he didn't try to pull the same stunt for Robocop.
(By the way, awesome list, I really enjoyed watching this 😊)
Frankly, given WBs track record over the years, I believe him, especially when you take into account the vastly superior PS1 version they were unable to publish, which actually did seem to improve on many of the originals problems.
This is the list of someone who didn't actually grow up with the system and has never actually played the games for themselves.
mf says his boss made him make the video.
Zelda Ocarina of Time is always #1 in my book.
Ya for me that’s the n64 game given the most effort. Majoras mask is also pretty great
I like majora mask at 1 than ocarina of.time.
Majora's Mask is leagues better
The fact that there were two other N64 games deemed worse then Superman 64 makes this list completely invalid. Superman 64 is complete trash and nothing will ever be worse then that.
Love the video, but bloody hell, who on your editorial team was like “ah yeh, Jeopardy. Put that above Tony Hawk 2”
Perfect Dark is objectively superior to Goldeneye
Probably the greatest overlooked game of all time. Revolutionized so much. Way more than GoldenEye. Counter operative was a wild concept. Only ever heard of it so to a friend recommendation.
Fun Fact: Goin Quackers has a serious technical issue where the music plays completely incorrectly, with lots of midi errors, corrupted instrument samples and more.
The game is actually a port of the Dreamcast/PC version (that actually has some great, underrated music!), but has a few original songs that to this day are not as audible as they should be.
The game's TCRF article explains a lot of the music errors. It's crazy!
Just did some research, fans are working on a repair patch that should even be released this year.

F-Zero X in the 50s. My head is shaking.

Banjo Tooie 114th place?? Really? REALLY?? Its in my top 5 games still to this day. Its a masterpiece and even better that Banjo Kazooie. They must have been drunk...
This is just a bad list, sadly. The perfect example of quantity over quality.
I’m a Tooie hater and even I think putting it 114 is absolutely egregious lol
Well, British, so . . .
Jesus Christ, that Quake gameplay. That gives that infamous Polygon journalist playing Doom 2016 a run for their money.

Perhaps the biggest criticism you can oppose Q64 is how dull and linear the world mapping can be. At any rate, we can safely agree that Ogre Battle 64 is superior.
I really appreciate you telling me 90% of my N64 library is junk.
They just used a randomizer and then made a long video to get a bunch of ad revenue off everyone sticking around to see (what the heck could they rank higher than fill in the blank) and if they put your fave super low you will comment and it will boost their algorithm standing.......they farmed everyone for money and it worked

Many of the games before 200 are pretty good. K.I gold was tons of fun. Lot of people were playing that back in the day.
My few disagreements with this list:
SO happy to see Diddy Kong Racing get the love it deserves
Ya know… that game was way better than most kart racers due to having a narrative and plot not to mention tons of variety in gameplay. I loved the overworld aspect was fun to explore. Kind of wish it got a proper sequel
Yeah! Also I love how skill-based it is. No random items! You get the exact item you choose, and you can choose to hang onto it and try to upgrade it too. I'm so happy Space Station Silicon Valley got such a high rating. The soundtrack is incredible, the gameplay is zany and unique, and the humor is some weird midway point between GTA and Monty Python.

Tetris DS was better. Great mini-games & retro nostalgia

Shocked at Tony Hawk 1 being listed in bottom 100
