  • In this video I review the Televes DAT BOSS Mix model 149483. It's a high gain amplified outdoor antenna with a unique triple boom design and built in amplifier that automatically adjusts the gain as needed. At a much smaller size than the traditional yagi - how well will it work?

    The second week it came in not so good, and now it's been gone since. Pretty sure it's them, not me.
    Every other station is now rock solid though. Not a single pixel to be found. Not even on the [violet] channel.

    I purchased this antenna last week, replacing an Antennas Direct ClearStream 2, hoping to alleviate pixilation issues on several weakly received channels. A couple of these channels issues were due to "summer foliage" aka leaves. Also the weakest was a very low powered station 14 miles away, which was almost impossible to watch. Results of this antenna in an attic mount configuration - fantastic! All of our channels except the low powered one just mentioned, are now showing max bars instead of 2 to 4 bars. They are rock solid. The low powered ones still have some occasional pixilation, especially in the morning hours, but afternoons and evenings are good. Thanks, Tyler, for your recommendation of this antenna. My wife and I are both thrilled with the results. Disclosure - we live 20 - 25 miles from broadcast antennas, in a heavily wooded (old growth, tall trees) are with many trees in the direction of all of the stations. As with any antenna, your results depend on your particular circumstances.

      I agree, these Televés antennas are really good for such size, it's not the cheapest anteana, but who cares? Pay few dolars more for many years investition is worthy I think. People are very often confused because they have poor antenna with strong amplifier and it shows strong signal, but with poor quality, it's better to have not so strong but better quality signal, which is not possible with some 8 dB antenna with 30 dB amplifier.

    Can't find my comment on the Gold Standard. Other viewers of these videos also brought this up too. As we know there is not no perfect antenna.
    What we the viewers are looking for is a far right column in your review of a antenna that you tested. Got extreme good numbers. Compared to the two most recent tests. As you test other antennas from other makers. The far right will show the antenna to beat at that time of testing. You may do another 10 antennas test in the coming weeks, months or years. But that highest gaining antenna will always be there to the far right. If you did a test and and last Antenna you tested exceeded the far right column that goes up and replaces it.
    This just shows to us viewers the current best model out there. This was bought up several times with other viewers of this channel.
    This is not to put your channel down, but make it better for everyone viewing this channel.
    Thanks!

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I said - there is no "highest gain" antenna as it depends what frequencies you're looking at. I would never single out one antenna like that either. I keep the results of the last two antennas. This takes time in editing and I don't even have to do it. If someone wants to find the best for certain frequencies they are free to watch my videos or sign up for an antenna recommendation from me on my website.

    As an engineer who doesn't even care about cutting the cord I bought one of these just to see what it can do. Wired it up in my attic so I can use it for my garage TV and then run it to the home office to hook it up to a HDHomeRun. I'm still waiting for the mast to show up so I can mount the damn thing but just to see what it can do I threw it on my front lawn and the Samsung in the garage detected over 50 channels.

    I haven't found an Antenna Man review of Televes' DATboss, UHF only. So I'm inserting my impression here.
    Just "installed" this afternoon. First floor and aimed out a window. 70m from KC xmitters and my ground elevation is approximately 725'.
    Mid-afternoon and scanned two channels. Pixelation, high. But as the afternoon wore on and into early evening and after sundown, WOW!!
    I've acquired 95% of the Kansas City channels and no pixelation!
    I can imagine what I do if I get this installed either in the attic or outdoors.
    Good job Televes'!

    That automatic gain control really sets it apart from the completion in my mind. Especially if you're a Dxer like me aiming for weaker distant stations adjacent to strong close ones.

    • @diycarhome9151
      @diycarhome9151 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Been in the business several years now. Automatic gain control does nothing, a regular preamp will bring in the same channels. I use a lot of the CM7777 long distant preamp, CM does sell a CM7778 which says to use in metro areas closer to transmitter, it's just a lower gaining Preamp that's all it is.
      I have mounted the CM7777 as far as 6 miles from the transmitter with no overloading.
      Atmospheric conditions do change daily. As I check signal strength on one particular channel every time I got the tv on. One day it could be 48% signal strength aimed at same transmitter then 55% another day and then do 75%. This option of automatic gain control is not needed.
      As for LTE Filter, got no problems with cell towers. One person on a Forum said it cuts out your weak distant stations.
      The more pure the preamp the better.
      It's only made to compensate a line loss between the antenna and TV set.

  • @BeingRomans829ed
    @BeingRomans829ed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I must admit, I don't understand comparing an antenna to "the last two antennas" since the last two antennas may have been good, bad, or average. It seems like the comparisons should be to the two best ones tested up to that point. Or pick a couple of decent "average" antennas and always use them for comparison in the latest test. Seems like, at least, the test should be more like the test done with the Datboss Mix LR in which the LR was compared to two known and identified "good"(I assume) antennas. The "last two" antennas comparison doesn't seem to say a whole lot. Maybe I'm unaware of something.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always showed the results of the last two antennas. This gives a general sense of how it performs. You can see the last two antennas were small directionals and this one performs better than them for UHF and a bit better for VHF. There is no gold standard or best antenna as it depends what frequencies you're looking at. That's why I have a video playlist on outdoor antennas for people to watch - including a separate review of the LR Mix. If they don't want to do the research I do offer antenna recommendations on my website which will tell them the best antenna for their area but I'll never say one antenna is the best for everyone.

    • @BeingRomans829ed
      @BeingRomans829ed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AntennaMan Yes, I agree that it has to be true that no one antenna is best for everyone. Although there may be a "best" antenna, chances are it would be huge, which can present a number of problems from difficulty of installation (and keeping it up there) to HOA rules to wasting money buying a more powerful antenna than needed. I do have a suggestion though. Perhaps pick one good "average" antenna to be the reference antenna, weighting it towards good UHF reception since there are so few VHF stations anymore. Then keep this one antenna installed at your testing location to be used for all future comparisons. A great thing about this is that not only would it standardize the tests, but the comparison could be done on the same day under the same exact conditions, so day to day variations of conditions would not skew the tests.
      Just an idea. Thanks for your knowledge, and willingness to help people get off cable TV🙂

    Yahoo! I can finally pick up the ABC affiliate in the San Francisco Bay Area again! It broadcasts on VHF-12 and my older DV/UHF antenna wouldn't pick it up. This antenna also picks up an independent that used to be the old NBC affiliate that broadcasts on VHF-7. I have one major ridge between the antenna, about 40 miles away, and my town of Livermore, CA. 88 channels found but roughly half are in another language so I "delete" those from my channel list.
    It's early yet but I'm very pleased with the antenna so far. I was considering another antenna until I watched your review on it - then saw your review on this model. Thank you!

    To have the best reception on both bands I would recommend installing two antennas like I did. One for VHF band and the second for the UHF band a VHF+UHF combiner and an amplified splitter. This antenna is a good choice for those who can't install two antennas, but I would recommend it only for UHF reception.

    Televes makes a version of this antenna with elements that can receive VHF Lo. The VHF-Lo element is about 5 feet wide. It is very hard to find this antenna. In Albany NY, CBS comes in on VHF Lo Chan 6, which is 62 miles away from me with no ridges. I would love to get this antenna. Judging by Tyler's tests, it should be able to do the job.

      Agreed for some reason Televes fails to make these easy to find on their Amazon page or even their own web page, you can only find them on their page if you know the model number and search it. As you said once you know what you want good luck finding it anywhere. The VHF-Lo added version of the reviewed model is #148281. The longer range VHF-Lo added model is #148381. Thanks man, I'm getting one of their LR's here soon, but gotta save up for a full overhaul of good cable, proper mast, antenna, the works, big project. I wish Televes, or literally any antenna manufacturer would retune their antenna lengths for the repack. I know Televes is based in Spain, but Europe is condensing their TV airwave space too, to make room for advanced cellular.
    Speaking of cellular, how come you talk mostly about TV antennas and only occasionally about wifi, cellular, and radio? Whole house wifi or whole property coverage is going to be equally important for ATSC 3.0, and a lot of people don't know the difference between wifi b,g,n,ac,ax,adinfinium, mesh network vs. wifi extenders, or access points, home cell phone signal amplifiers, how to use directional wifi antennas to connect a far away gate camera to your system, or get wifi out to a distant shop without running hardwire, etc. Granted, theres about a million bad antennas on A->zon to do videos on, and you've built a decent testing system and kit over the years, so I would understand staying focused on one area.

    I'm late to this discussion but I noticed that the latest version of this Televes DAT BOSS mix antenna (#149484) is advertised as "repack ready" but the low-VHF version (#148281) is not. I'm considering purchasing the low-VHF model to get the infamous Channel 6 signal out of Philly but should I choose another model that's been optimized for the repack? Or maybe the 148281 is "repack ready" but Televes didn't update the description? I'm not sure how much that feature will add to the performance on UHF. My current antenna, a Wineguard 7694P, gets consistent reception of just about all of the Philly stations and even picks up Channel 6 most of the time during winter but not so much during summer.

    I have this antenna in european modification with LTE/5g filter and DVB-T2 channel range (K21-48), I guess back part with long elements is not on our model because we don't use VHF for TV in Europe or it's very rare, our TV frequencies start at K21. It works really well for K46 with bad signal and even for lower channels like K26. And the best thing is that you can use it even in pasive mode without power supply, not all active antennas with amplifier can work without power supply, sometimes, you just don't need amplifier, so why sending voltage to antenna? It's not some superior antenna or something, but compared to what is the most popular antenna in my country (small sieve made in Poland with poor amplifier), this is really massive upgrade, if you catch all channels from one transmitter ofcourse, for catching from more places at once, that sieve construction is better, but not made in Poland, better to buy our made in Pilsen, Czech Republic. :-) For some reason, my country is antenna superpower, we made the best antennas, but unfortunately, it's only small production, probably not for export.
    What I mean by "Polish antenna" - www.radiokus.cz/fotky86262/fotos/_vyr_3575_14460805.jpg
    And this is same construction made in Pilsen, Czech Republic www.digitalnitelevize.cz/images/200910/vaten-velk-sto-5669.jpg
    Do you see the difference? 4 such antennas connected together were used in communism time to illegaly catch German or Austrian TV, in such connection, it can has better results than long yagi antennas for some reason. :-) It looks like this lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/K8V4YiMDfBzycrB-mDCTJXHh8xOcF1bDmihA6kkhfqcS4XWAABS6pGQeZoQxnqOTHWhNDCnxLs4gl_J7_VcN2JsxjO40OH8OT3yrUXFj

      The DAT BOSS has higher native UHF gain, and a built in preamp. It also has high VHF elements that the db4e lacks. It will have a longer potential range than a db4e. It’s also more directional which will help avoid multipath interference. The broader beamwidth of the db4e may be beneficial in situations where stations are spread out and less gain is sufficient.
