Ativa is perfect for Malaysians. However, I would like to point out the 3-cylinder engine, as a former owner of Viva, I understood that technology has moved forward, but I believe Perodua should put better and probably more mounts as to minimise vibration. Unlike X-50 with the counterbalance mechanism that really kills the vibrations, the Perodua engine still uses counter-weighted crankshafts, maybe that contributes to vibration. Although history, my previous experience with Viva, you can actually feel the vibration at 140 km/h via the steering.
For price alone, its fair to say this Ativa is a good city with no frills. You want refinement, more power, go search elsewhere, really. It is targeted for the mass middle income folks. The overall package of this car fullfills the need for urban dwellers. The boot size is generous enough, good for a small family
Great review. He is the best among all and he lured me to buy the Passat GTI from his review. His review is less bias and I always look forward for his big "but" which many car reviewers not much willing to point out the weakness.
I think the toll reader should be an option like something within the GearUp catalog and not a feature. The toll reader doesn't really cater to East Malaysians who are forced to have it even without tolls. Imagine having to pay for something you don't need and cars cost an extra 2-4k because of "shipping" costs and another few extra ringgits just to replace it with a multipurpose compartment. Instead of making the built in smart tag a feature, make it an add on instead. It sucks owning a 1.5 Myvi in Sarawak because youre considered "not smart" for buying a car with a toll reader 🥲
After a test drive, I actually feel that this Ativa is a direct competitor of Myvi, not X50. It is inferior than X50 in almost all departments making comparing Ativa and x50 almost like comparing Vios and Civic. It is actually much closer to Myvi than X50. Between Myvi and Ativa, I cannot think of many reasons to get the Ativa over the Myvi. Paying 20k more for more advanced safety features doesn't fell worth. The ativa is about the same as myvi in term of size, leg room, refinement, nvh, power etc. I would choose Myvi over this due to cheaper price.
Have you also tried the newest Myvi to compare? Myvi wins on price and rear legroom, but you have to be kidding me to say it's more refined and has better NVH! I test drove both back to back and the comfort level in the Ativa is way better than Myvi, for real. The driving experience is also different and I guess will depend on your taste. The Ativa feels a lot more responsive in my opinion, probably due to the turbo. Add that to additional headroom, clearance off the ground, boot space, tech features etc. I think the mid-spec Ativa is a good proposition. But definitely agree with you that X50 is a different price range.
You want a frugal daily driver, easy to drive & park plus can wade through minor flash floods without worries, this is the car. An even better town car than the MyVi.
Just got this car, my first ever Perodua. I've owned alot of cars before and actually prefer this to my ford escape or chevy captiva lol. fyi the vibrations are not noticeable to me, maybe because my daily driver was a modified hatch with 260hp.
@@Jitsern94 Honestly, its excellent. I think some reviewers talk about the vibration simply because there's nothing else to criticize about the car. The only mods I did so far, a video screen bypass so I can watch it while the car is moving, and a seatbelt buzzer bypass to silence it. The high ground clearance also lets me board ferries and go offroad no problem.
@@armesisp3201 Yooo thanks so much for the review, for me I'm just wondering more about the power of the Ativa, when you're driving past 110/130km/h, does the car shake alot (like the previous Perodua models)? Also whether or not you feel its fuel efficient? 🙏🏻
@@Jitsern94 It moves very well and has plenty of power actually, I think its because the car only weighs 1000kgs. The POWER button also makes it faster quite significantly. The suspension is soft, but even at 140kph its still planted. Again, I'm very surprised at the quality of the car overall. My daily driver was a tuned Mazda 3 MPS with over 260hp (still have it) and I've raced it at Sepang before, so I'm not just talking cock haha. Definitely worth a buy, since its a Japanese car underneath (Daihatsu), reliability wont be an issue. Edit - The fuel tank is abit small, but its very fuel efficient, probably the best out of all my cars I've ever owned.
This is a very well done review thank u AutoBuzz. The question if Ativa is compared to X50 or not, is mainly depending on Perodua n Proton after sale service bocos that is what follow us long after we bought the car. I have an Alza n Iriz at home n both after sales service is day n night. I am not buyers to either brand but Perodua is truly a more Malaysian company compared to Proton. .
this review reminds me of carwow, fun and organised content delivery. why is everyone complaining abt 3cylinder noise anyway, its internal combustion engine, duuuuh?? not tesla engine. are we spoiled too much that we forgot how noisy is viva engine + belting problem?

The thing that really rubs me the wrong way is that basically all you car reviewers call this ~RM70k car "budget car", "cheap car", "ok lah this kind of price". It is like those things where you guys hope that by repeating it enough times, it becomes a new reality for Malaysian car buyers. As far as I'm concerned, RM70k in Malaysian car buyer context does not fit the category of "cheap". That category should be for those sub RM40k cars. Like the Axia and the Saga. RM70k is already "almost the price of a Japanese make (City/Vios/Almera)".

Very informative and helpful guide to process my thinking on cars. Would like to ask your kind opinion - comparing a new Ativa AV (~RM70,000) to a new Honda City Hatchback S (~RM75,000) which is better in terms of city driving to work, occasionally transporting bicycles and maybe use to fetch kids to school in the future. Which in your opinion would be the most suited? Thanks 🙏🙏
I just test drove it, the power is good enough because the car only weighs 1 ton. It reached 140kph pretty fast, my daily driver has 260hp, but I really didnt mind the Ativa. Really surprised at how good this car is for the low price.
Perodua has a long history of partnership with Daihatsu since the time it was founded, and eventually partnership with Toyota since Daihatsu is owned by Toyota now. Historically all Perodua cars were rebadged from Daihatsu. But in 2016, Perodua started to design their original cars. Perodua Bezza was the first original Perodua designed car, followed by Myvi 3rd Gen (which is brought by Astra Daihatsu to Indonesia as Daihatsu Sirion). Perodua Aruz, which is a twin version of Toyota Rush for SE markets, are co-developed by Perodua and Toyota. Same goes to Perodua Ativa, the triplet of Toyota Raize and Daihatsu Rocky, all 3 companies are responsible for the design and development.
