Enjoyed the comparison between the 2 cars, great job. I live in Austria and have ordered the Duster Journey 2WD with just one of the available options, (Winter Packet) The Duster is one of the top selling SUVs here and hold their value rearly well. Great looks a better drive and better value than the MG.
fml, another one that mentions plastics being hard or scratchy. dont care! its hard wearing. soft touch ages badly when uncared for, hard plastics can be scrubbed. The Duster isn't just the winner out of these 2 cars, but it is, pound for pound, the best car on sale in the UK today, by a mile!
Dacia do know how to screw together a well made hard plastic interior had my mk3 sandero over 3 years and apart from the odd wear and tear scratch theres no squeaks or rattles at all . imo from experience they do a better job than Toyota . I had a 2017 yaris hybrid for a short while inherited in 2021 and it was a rattle fest and everything fell really flimsy and hollow .
In this iteration Duster has a really bloody good look. And MG still being just a generic chinese car. And thats really a big point especially for urban and younger buyers
Duster has 1.0 and 1.2 renault engines ,if you have IQ bigger then room temperature you should run away from that engines at all cost ( if you want to keep car after warranty )
You may be right on the rust issue with the MG. I had a Duster for 10 years here in Austria and no rust issues even with roads salted for 5 months of the year.
It may have 7 year 80000 mile warranty but the average owner shelled out a lot in repairs with MG in your reliability survey suggesting that items classed as wear and tear were not included and must have been pretty cheaply made.
My brother is on 125k in his 2016 MG3. No problems other than servicing. Still on original clutch and no corrosion issues in Scotland. Have 3 ZSs owned by other family members and all good.
Some things that Dacia has and Mg are not in addition to those listed above (adjustable depth steering wheel, lpg, 4x4, climate control buttons): wireless charging, heated steering wheel and heated windshield, and Dacia also has soft elbow material but to a higher version
There is something nobody speaks of: although Dacia's plastic may be or look cheap, it is perfectly assorted to the car's looks in a way Suzuki Jimny's interior completes the exterior of the car. Otherwords, Dacia's design makes cheap plastic seem cool and perfect for the car.
I think the Dacia Duster still is the bench mark in the segment, but you wouldn't go wrong with the MG either, especially if you don't mind the lack of dealerships and the fussiness to repair it
Just traded my Duster2 in, for a brand new Duster3 (140 Hybrid, Journey). Didn't expect the car to be improved this much. My "old" Duster (ran on diesel, which was one of the reasons I chose to trade it), was a very good car, particularly cheap in maintenance, yet very reliable. The new one is so much more 'matured' as a car: It drives better, it feels bigger (though it isn't), it's much more comfortable, and actually is quite a modern car. Enjoy it big time.
If you look at other reviews on say the MG Zs hybrid+. Everyone says how good it is. I don't really like how the Whatcar reviewers are, it's always the same kind of comments. Unless it's a BMW or Audi they always critisize everything and don't take into account that these cars are half price or less than the BMWs and Audi equivalents. I advise people to look at independent reviewers and not people who maybe are told what to say about certain cars. Money talks 😉
Dont be fooled by the MG hybrid system as unlike the Renault/Dacia System which was new from the ground up when it was launched couple of years ago the MG is just a Parts bin Special . So its the same system as in the MG3 but the 1.5 engine is just the old 1.5 from the previous MG3 plus the 3 speed Gearbox is from old SAIC cars like getting on for 20 years ago and in mg3 atm its been problematic with the gearbox getting stuck in neutral and wont change gear . Plus Reliability not great even with 7 year warranty my neighbour had a 2020 HS on mobility and 2 years later the rear brakes seized on and was at the dealer for 2 Months as like with all Chinese cars Spare Parts are non Existent . So she swapped it for a 2023 Hyundai Tuscon .
In your (surprise!) very own very recent small SUVs reliability survey backed by 29967 responses gathered across 6 months and published on 06-Oct-2024, Dacia Duster (2018-present) sits at #4 in decreasing order of reliability while the MG ZS (2017-2024) sits at... #22... the second to last. There's no reason to scrupulously compare European engineering against 100% high grade Chinesium with a British badge. Another reasonable thing would've been to emit a judgement on the Duster as a whole based on the engine it will be most sought after with, that being the TCe 130. People looking for high value will most absolutely and definitely NOT be looking at the Hybrid 140. Then, the value proposition would've been ridiculously evident no matter how you look at it. Of course, if you would've done the aforementioned 2 reasonable things there would've been no reason to do this video...
7:36 The screen of the information system does not turn to either the driver or the passenger. There are no problems at all in seeing the information in it. Many cars uses such orientation of the screen. It's just a matter of taste.
Quite biased comparison favoring Duster. First of all you did not compare the right versions of the cars - to match the equipment of MG Trophy (electronoc brake, 360 cameras, 12in screen, HDC, car overtaking detection in mirrors, MG Pilot, Smart App, etc.) you should take the Extreme Duster version with some additional packs of equipment. If compared properly - then the price of Duster is 2000 £ higher. And still you wont get some of the perks as Duster top version screen is 10 inches, or Duster does not have app control that allows preheating or precooling the vehicle. And telling people that having a smartphone holder next to the sterring wheel, limiting the view in front of the car is the best thing in car interior is quite lame, especially in 2024... Smartphone holders were popular when the big infotainment screens were not available. ENCAP score for ZS has been published recently and it has one more star tha the Duster.

@@PassportToPimlico exactly; In case of the Renault system used in the Dacia, the Electric engine also gets 2 gears, so you are left with officially 14 or 15 combinations, so plenty; In the MG until approx 55 mph (86 km/h exactly), the engine is just a generator and the electric engine drives the engine, so the other gears are just for speeds above that; others use ECVTs (which are actually not a classic CVT) or even no gears (Honda, direct drive on the motor way, other wise electric motor does the drive); I think only not PHEV full hybrid to use a classic gear box is the Hyundai Ioniq (the one without a number) and Kia Niro.
the 4 speed in the Renault/dacia hybrid models has Variable ratios so it changes it to the driving conditions and is a good system . The 3 speed on the MG however is just a 3 speed Torque converter from 20+ years ago SAIC Models thats it . Just a lazy Parts pin Special Hybrid System along with the 1.5 engine which is from the Previous MG3 and very outdated.
@@ben3291 THing is, if you don't need gears 1-4 or so, 3 is more than enough. In either case, you will have scenarios where revs are unnaturally high (as you do with a Toyota eCVT, where I have plenty personal experience), situations where the engine is just a generator and in most normal driving conditions, not really notice much going on.
Duster. I have the previous model and for the money, it's excellent. Great value, great workhorse, straightforward 4x4, goes off-road and up farm tracks without missing a beat.
No contest, the MG is superior. I’ve tested both, and the MG is far more convenient on the motorway, whereas the Dacia struggles during acceleration. I even managed to drive at 100 km/h in electric mode with the MG 😳. The MG is cheaper, has more features, and the interior feels far less budget. I also much prefer its more classic design. And let’s not forget the 7-year warranty!
Mild hybrid works as a sort of coasting battery. So as you slow down it’ll shut the engine down, and it’ll give you a (very) minor boost when you pull away. But you’ll never be able to run on pure electricity.
Mild hibrid, motorul electric ajută motorul la pornire și atunci când are nevoie de mai multă putere. Ful hibrid, mașina se poate deplasa doar cu motorul electric în oraș, la viteza mică, deci : economie de combustibil!
Mild hybrid is 48V system, means that you can never get significant power from it because you’ll be current limited. Full hybrid is much more voltage, I think something like 250V in this case, so you can get enough power to run on electric only. But as I suspect you are intimating, I also would never buy a non PHEV, I don’t believe full hybrid can ever be as good as a plug in, the engine will always need to be fired up in a full hybrid :/ I could go to the shops on electric only infinitely with a plug in
@@alanhillyard1639 phev is a waste of time on longer trips as once battery dead you’re effectively carrying around a lot of dead weight and the mpg will be much worse than full hybrid. There’s a reason most taxis use Prius hybrids and not plug ins.

I might have to take a test drive
I test drove both and the speed difference was eye watering. The MG had great acceleration and the Dacia was like a non turbo Mazda. Painfully difficult to get up to speed. I prefer the rigid feel and look of the Dacia but the interior of the MG offered more refinement. I think I would pay the extra and go MG.

Renault makes great cars. No problem for at least 100.000 km.. so if you buy it new, you gonna have a great journey till you get bored of it and buy a new model.
I've 3 questions please. First .....there is a very fragile looking cable running forward from the battery under the boot floor.....what is that for? Looks a bit amateurish last minute thought. Second ...... another site suggested there wasn't any corrosion underseal protection underneath......is that correct? And third........is why do these manufacturers think we don't need a spare wheel? Had to wait hours for recovery once because car at the time only had a useless tyre repair/inflation kit. All not glamorous questions but what I'd suggest are 'real world' concerns.
This is true for DD3, but.... My DD3 in the past 100 days spend soooooo much time being repaired.... It's my 4th and none previous had so much issues.... I very like the bi fuel version - it goes clean and cheap - but boy o' boy. I am currently trying to return it. Hope the newer ones get better. Right now in the market for Kamiq Monte Carlo - yes it's smaller, pricier, but feels like premium compared. Had my DD3 have no issues - I woudn't ever look elswere.....

I just like how car journalists get bruised so easily by a bit of hard plastic. But lets be honest that plastic will hold up much better compared to the fake leather that will break after a bit of time in the sun. The ZS also has some sharp plastic cuts, for example when ajusting the height of the seatbelt (went to a showroom and cut my finger).
7:28 You are correct, because china is LHD market & this car didn't get the optimization for RHD market, that's why its tilted towards front passenger side!

The MG looks much better in the interrior. Also the fake leather seats are a must for me. I don't like fabric at all. I would have liked the clima control to be physical instead of the volume buttons.
for me it's the exact opposite, I don't like leather seats and I prefer canvas, the leather seats are hot in the summer and cold in the winter, the Mg's interior is grotesque, the screen is centered, it doesn't have a steering wheel that can be adjusted in depth, it doesn't have climate buttons , it doesn't have wirless charging, it doesn't have a heated windshield, it doesn't have a heated steering wheel, you don't have a 4x4, you don't have LPG, and sometimes the plastic on the doors can be very useful, if you have children, or you touch them with a sharp object, they don't break

Guess that's why duster has better residual values
Duster has 1.0 and 1.2 renault engines ,if you have IQ bigger then room temperature you should run away from that engines at all cost ( if you want to keep car after warranty )
Duster is too pretentious IMHO, trying too much being what it really isn't. In the long term it may age quicker. MG is more subtle.
👍👏👏👏👏👏
@@dzonikg, what's wrong with those engines? Taxi drivers with over 300k miles on the clock with the 1.0 TCE would like to disagree with you.
the difference between them is on rough terrain, country roads. that's why the duster is preferred and sold so well.
You did not cover one thing! After 3-4 years the MG will be a rust bucket! The duster will be ok even after 10-15 years.
You may be right on the rust issue with the MG. I had a Duster for 10 years here in Austria and no rust issues even with roads salted for 5 months of the year.
Have a 7yr old MG3. No rust at all
Maybe a tad optimistic with 15 years but 10 years i can definitely see with no issues on a Dacia .
😅@@PatrickNick-o9f
I guess this is included in the smaller depreciation of the Duster.
It may have 7 year 80000 mile warranty but the average owner shelled out a lot in repairs with MG in your reliability survey suggesting that items classed as wear and tear were not included and must have been pretty cheaply made.
Have you had one, 4 years 30k faultless
Lucky you. MG seem to have a bad reputation for trying to get out of warranty work, time off road, and parts availability.
My brother is on 125k in his 2016 MG3. No problems other than servicing. Still on original clutch and no corrosion issues in Scotland. Have 3 ZSs owned by other family members and all good.
My mg dealer told me it’s not mg that refuse to pay for warranty stuff normally. It’s the dealers
Some things that Dacia has and Mg are not in addition to those listed above (adjustable depth steering wheel, lpg, 4x4, climate control buttons): wireless charging, heated steering wheel and heated windshield, and Dacia also has soft elbow material but to a higher version
Nope. Not even on the higher trims
@@alxdava2004 yes and much more ;)
whatsinmy AI fixes this. Dacia Duster vs MG ZS
The problem with MG is their dreadful reputation for reliability.
I think the Dacia Duster still is the bench mark in the segment, but you wouldn't go wrong with the MG either, especially if you don't mind the lack of dealerships and the fussiness to repair it
Duster just looks soooo good
MG looks like old hyundai ...or latest Audi, which is not a compliment 😅
"Looks like old Hyundai or latest Audi"... 😄 Didn't think of it that way, but is so true...
Money talks 😉
this
Makes me laugh when they say there are better cars out there but they cost more money 🤔
@@martynmorris8160 exactly, don't trust what they say, when others say how great it is.
What's the deal with the plastic arm rest? My "premium" 2015 BMW has a plastic armrest and this wasn't an issue for a bloody 30k- 40k euro car.
I have a « padded » armrest on my 2019 BMW… and added a small cushion because the padding is too thin for me 😊
Bigster vs MG HS please…
Dacia. Don't buy chinese! It's easy.
No contest. The Duster wins hands down.
Great Review... I'd go for the Duster.
No idea what camshaft drive the MG has, but the Duster has a long life timing chain, so no cambelt service changes.
The MG is also a chain
Totally agree.
well - i just got a 6 month old Suzuki Swace.
1.8 eCVT Self charging hybrid. Ultra Spec. Paid over 5k less than these SUV's.
0-60 in - 9.2. 140bhp - 102 c02s - 66mpg! - PLUS a 600LT boot and warranty till 2030!!
I do prefer the position on the road in an SUV - but could not find anything that came close to Suzuki's/Toyota's Hybrid Estate!
I am not in love with it, its not as lush as an Audi A6 Avant or drive like a 3 Series BMW - but as a tool to get you from A to B for family needs. Perfect.
I must be getting old now! lol
if the duster got the eco g 140 from the bigster it would be unstoppable, cheap driving and good power
It most likely will come to the Duster later.
😂@@sebastianstoica578
I was all for the MG until it got to the climate controls and the faffy touch screen. No go. 👎
I believe you can configure the Favorite ⭐ button on the staring wheel to control it (I have seem it on other reviews here on TH-cam)
Not when you are using carplay @@hlandims
El climatizador en grados de temperatura y nivel de soplado se cambia desde los mandos del volante
The fan speed and temperature can simply be adjusted from a shortcut on the steering wheel.
A business owner who earns million a year buys a brand New rolls royce for £100k with tax breaks, this is only 1 month's earning, but if a person on minimum living wages of £20k buys a brand new car for £20k, No tax breaks, this is whole years wages wiped out, whole country should go on strike until they pay up
Move to Cuba comrade.
Dacia is the clear winner for sure. I would go with a mild hybrid. 517 liters of boot space and all equipment for 25k euros
Maybe MG changed the steering wheel from left to right and the infotainment remained the same.
Duster is GREAT CAR ... For this ammount of money - there is NO real direct rival. Period.
Buy EU made and owned by European brand or buy China and brand owned by the actual Chinese Communist Party? No debate. But European. Support democracy based organisations with employee rights and duties. Don't support allies of Russia and NK. Better cars too.
Europe is becoming a dictatorship
Just appreciating that side on zs to duster transition 👏
the mg info screen is angled to the left because of lhd drive vehicles it is not designed for right hand drive
Why are car reviewers obsessed with climate controls? Every car I have had in the last 10 years I've set the climate to 20.5 and never touched again!
because it's not just about that, you have a lot of functions that you need to go in a specific menu, and that can distract you from the road
What about PCP costs of a higher spec Duster matching the spec of the ZS
MG ZS's insurance will be incredibly high due to parts availability, I had a quote back of 90 quid a month whereas Dacia Duster Journey for me was 35 quid, this will be a deal breaker for a lot of people.
Quite the opposite, no real issues with parts.
Hey, you are comparing apples to oranges here, the Duster is a very capable off-road SUV whereas the MZ is definitely not, and probably not even available with 4wd
The Duster takes the win! Much better looks and is a great car overall!
I would choose the Duster
DACIA DUSTER .
3 and 4 spd automatics?
That’s where I’m confused too? My 130hp corsa has a 8 speed
@@dylanpower1438 I think that it is because they are hybrids. The electric motor is filling in the gaps between gears.
Hello! Could you do a comparison on the New Dacia one against the Captur? Great review, by the way.
7:06 what are you talking about? AC in MG ZS can be controled whith buttons on stear wheel,, which is very useful when driving
What's the difference between mild hybrid and full hybrid if full hybrid isn't a plug in hybrid ?
Mild hybrid works as a sort of coasting battery. So as you slow down it’ll shut the engine down, and it’ll give you a (very) minor boost when you pull away. But you’ll never be able to run on pure electricity.
A mild hybrid is a gimmick
I love the duster, I live in quite a rural location that’s prone to flooding so the new 4x4 version would be great for me (the old 4x4 only came in diesel which put me off) I really hope they eventually bring this out with 4x4 paired with this hybrid engine as it’d be perfect for what I need. I might have to take a test drive
So should China invade Taiwan will parts still be available for the MZ if sanctions are applied.
No.
Owners are having trouble getting parts now according to research I've done. If China go to war, might as well scrap your commy car. Game over.
How do the insurance groups compare ?
Very happy with my 22 plate MG HS, no servicing probs, comfy and decent gadgets 😊
2:28 - În România, the Duster's price starts from 16990 € list price, without the Rabla discount (probably, with some discounts it will be 2-3 k euros cheaper), which îs about 14228 £, probably the cheapest new Duster in Europe, Duster Essential Eco-G 100, 100 HP, bi-fuel petrol-LPG, with an autonomy of 1450 km, with both fuel tanks full. MG FOR REAL DEAL
I used to sell Dacia, great product. Love the new duster.
Modern safety aids ? You mean those safety aids that everybody disables if they can?
Yes we know you can get better cars for more money as you kept saying many times. But we don't all have more money, if I was to buy a Ford Puma I could still buy a better car, Aston Martin same thing I could still buy a better car. So next time just review on the cars like for like. The rest of the review was very good.
MG ZS is getting a bit long in the tooth. I think Dacia looks better although it doesn't exactly have stellar safety for a car that size.
2023 Sportage gt-line or a new duster ?
One thing you can be sure off with what car ,is they will jever recommend any car that is up against a Renault/Dacia vehicle.
What about the Citroen ami??!
If you’re after the most value oriented ZS, just sit tight for more info on the petrol only model, which launches in early 2025.
I also wouldn’t ignore the massive savings on the out-going model which could save you thousands overall!
What Car have always had a pretty negative view of the old model, but it has a lot going for it, and you don’t buy these cars because it’s premium (because it isn’t!), but I find it’s a perfectly respectable, great value family car. 👍
Wouldn't touch an MG with a barge pole. Very unreliable which dealers refuse to accept and it's Chinese.
@ohyesitsme So I'm assuming you never buy anything from Amazon or Ebay. Almost all, every day items you touch are made in China. From lights to picture frames. The only people who can afford to not from shop china arnt buying a Duster. Also I'm assuming you don't own any Apple products?
I get 48mpg out of my 2020 Duster tce
Haven't seen a new shape Duster in the flush yet but I might upgrade to a Renault Symbioz next time

Yet another review in this class where the use of plastics is highlighted for criticism, it's maddening. What bit of 'cheap functional SUV' do you not understand? If you want superfluous luxury, pay £10k more for something else, simple.
Another great comparison test, great video, for me Dacia Duster 4x4 would be the choice if offered in automatic 😊❤. Tried manual and it's not good to drive
Sorry the mg zs 180 is the only mg zs had a fuel leak on one of mine and it didn’t burst into flames unlike certain electric cars!

The MG’s steering wheel control can be configured to control the climate control - poor review preparation.
for me it's the exact opposite, I don't like leather seats and I prefer canvas, the leather seats are hot in the summer and cold in the winter, the Mg's interior is grotesque, the screen is centered, it doesn't have a steering wheel that can be adjusted in depth, it doesn't have climate buttons , it doesn't have wirless charging, it doesn't have a heated windshield, it doesn't have a heated steering wheel, you don't have a 4x4, you don't have LPG, and sometimes the plastic on the doors can be very useful, if you have children, or you touch them with a sharp object, they don't break
