The trick to keeping the chromes reflective look is for alclad: do a layer of chrome, then aqua gloss, then go over that with 2k gloss and it’ll bring back the reflectivity. After that you can use a clear yellow/brown for your good look. Please give that a try and see how you like it
aqua gloss shouldn't remove the chrome effect to begin with. it''s impossible to apply so much that the reflectivity disappears without massive pooling. aqua gloss is not very strong; 2K would almost certainly demolish it no?
what I do is spray the shiniest chrome you have (even the greenstuff one) then use the E7 chrome sealer/pledge (both have similar results) and THEN use the clear yellow/brown/orange mix, it'll be really shiny.
Hello Rex, i know this is an older video but ive learned and tried that Tamiya Clear Yellow and Clear Orange mixed 50/50, will give you and more realistic rich gold, like a 14k gold, ive done some airbrushing some lowrider car kits on the spoke wheels, and it came out unbelievable. Spray it over chrome and used a tamiya clear to protect it. Try it and thank me later my friend. Cheers
I love your airbrush and paint videos since I've been looking into switching from hand painting my gunpla to airbrush. These are always really informative!
So from what I found from the web, best option is to spray a Chrome base (Alclad Chrome or SMS Hyper Chrome or Chrome from GreenStuff), we keep as it is for SILVER and if needed we cover with a varnish (any Acrylic gloss + High gloss varnish) in which for the GOLD version we add a mix of Yellow and Brown pigments (SMS Clear Yellow + Clear Brown or food coloring Yellow + Brown or Red). In this last option, we already have the chrome protection...
That clear yellow and clear brown tends to give a dark gold which looks to be consistent in most of your spoons.. Clear yellow + clear orange is the traditional bright gold
@@michaelatella7632 depends on how much of a yellow gold you want. Start with 70 yellow and 30 orange, then see if that’s what you like. If you want a darker gold then put in more orange
Createx makes acrylic/urethane clear coats and candy colors. For those the ratios and mixing is really important to follow, but definitely a full range of colors and effects in acrylic paints, plus the 4053 high gloss clear to test on chromes.
right now for gold im using gold chrome nail powder over gloss black for yellow/gold parts on my gunpla. might give this a try when my current powder runs out
Did you seal any of the chromes before spraying the clear paints over them? I tried clear yellow Mr Color over the Alclad chrome once, but it ate through the chrome a bit and gave it a typical silver metallic look. Perhaps I went to heavy to soon on the yellow.
Back in the day I found a testers paint mix that I did on a gundam kit , turn out just like a dark gold Chrome. It was gloss black Metallic mix with Metallic gold an there was one more can not remember the name . It was an odd tester name. I'm try to find where I put my old tester paint.
Thank you! I tried it with GSW Candy Inks, tiger brown + citrine yellow but with different ration (2 brown : 1 yellow) as I prefer darker tone and it looks almost perfect, I just ordered mr. color yellow and brown to see how it compares. GSW has a nice candy effect, I really like the tone and how it reflects the light but it dulls chrome a bit to much (or I put the paint in the worng way...).
Nice. Just received a huge lot of metallics, fluoros and colour shifting hobby paints. I’m starting my own budget tabletop channel and have been accruing supplies to feature on it. I have also ordered a heap of acrylic and alcohol inks to create my own metallics with. I will be using a pearlescent base and acrylic inks for opaque colours and gloss or matte polyurethane varnish and alcohol inks for translucent colours. I’ll have to try this with chrome too.
GSW do have a set of acrylic candy inks. 8 that includes brown and yellow. I haven't tried it much. But brushed a little over the chrome that went ok. Love how you mixed this up. I want to try this for sure.😊 I did have the GSW gold chrome and it wasn't shiny enough. I thought I did it wrong. Cheers!
I've been following ever since you've been doing chrome and gold chrome videos. Now that I see so many results in this video I wonder which one is the closest to Gordon Tarpley's C3PO's gold chrome? He uses a yellow and red mixture. Does your mixture remove reflectivity? It's difficult to see....I wonder if more yellow than brown would help get the tone to that C3PO light gold chrome result...The Duralumen appeared to be deadened as if the chrome reflectivity went away but I could be wrong as too many back to back gold chrome results appear to make them all look alike after a while. Any comments on this, Rex? Thanks for doing this video! PS. Try Holomatic Spectral Chrome on all chromes without 2k clear over the final results, and without 2k over each base!
alclad chrome with a aqua clear sealer and createx tequila gold candy looks amazing. keeps the reflections pretty well but is prone to dripping uneven coverage if you are not patient, even over a waterbase clear. not sure why but apply it in thin coats you get good results
Great video. You mentioned that it doesn’t work on the Greenstuff chrome. They make 3 three lines of acrylic inks that may work. They are: Acrylic wash ink (8 colors), intensity ink (12 colors) and candy inks (8 colors). Probably the latter will be best to try
That's a fantastic little secret. I don't know how you came up with this idea but I'll be using it the first chance I get. Keep up with these experiments, I'm sure we would be lost without all of your great work. You could put out a book! I'd surely get a copy! 👍
AWESOME, thank you so much! Since I got back into auto modeling I've wanted to take my skills to the next level. I've always wanted to build some kits changing the chrome to gold, now I know how. 👍
Another informative video. I have been trying this but have been using clear over the chromes first and it kills the shine. Will give these combos a try.
Very interesting! This is an excellent vid giving many good options. Always looking for chrome ideas/solutions along with the anodized look. Thanks for all the leg work!!
Great work! Your results were good and you really got a nice chrome gold look. I am going to pick up that Mr. Metallic Rough Silver and maybe that no name silver as I do really like the way those turned out. I'll probably just use the rough silver as a base under a candy to get that 70's big flake candy paint job look. I'll also have to get a brown candy as I must have misplaced the one I had and I'm sure I'll have a project where I'll need a chrome gold.
Its true about the mind saying its yellow, i put clear yellow over gold and it only looked slightly more gold than the yellow over silver did. All the paints in that test were tamiya and I think they make a clear brown so I'll pick some up if they do, I already spent way to much on most of the createx candy line, I forget which thinner lol, and some mutant crystal.
This came out just on time. I got a Transformers Cyberverse deluxe Grimlock. That particular release is plain grey and yellow instead of the traditional silver and gold of the character. Another character of the same team, Slug, was released later in the same line with the traditional team colors, so they don't look good together. I generally leave my transformers stock unless they are broken or bootlegs, but the grey plastic on this Grimlock has turned yellow now, so I won't be feeling any gilt when modifying it.
I'm just curious, but wouldn't orange and yellow or red and yellow have a similar effect? With the result being different tones of gold, like a rose gold or a warmer gold?
Great content again. I paint diecast cars, and have been looking for a good gold chrome look. A couple of these combinations are just what I’m looking for.

Awesome, thank you Robert, I believe we're getting much much closer to the secret of imitating chrome gold plate. Just wonder how water or alcohol based clear would work. Curious if the solvent is flash breaking down some of the chrome shine as it's dries? Just a thought.

Great vid. However, I was hoping to see a comparison between the brands of clear brown/yellow as I imagine there could be great differences. That could be too much extra run time, but to cut down length you could've just shown them all next to each other demonstrated on your favorite chromes from the first brand. Just real quick at the end. Also if you would show how every chrome looks before spraying, that would help ppl like me saving this as a reference. Again, great video. Just trying to help as I am definitely your target demographic. Subscribed!
