Happy to have found this video. I'm new to airbrushing, and my first attempt is likely going to be using some decanted Krylon cans. I've been trying to determine what was an appropriate thinner to use and how much. You've given me some good ideas.
You also make the decanting process much simplier. Originally I was going to puncture the cans and decant them entirely. But now I see that's not neccessary.

Great video Robert. I'm curious how each of these would hold up with a good candy and/or clear coat applied over the top. I know that usually makes for a perfect disaster with most of these paints, but I'm always hopeful that some day we'll find that secret sauce that gives the perfect chrome, and colored chrome, glossy look without ruining the piece! R.I.P. to the Pledge Clear Gloss floor polish. ✌️😎

Enjoyed and appreciate the testing done here. As a general tip for knowing how your paints are actually going to look the second time you reach for a can (or hobby bottle), the first time I use one I always make a point of also spraying the cap.

When it comes to the Krylon foils. I have had the best luck and the best finish, after spraying with a gloss black. While the black is wet, I cover with the foil paint. The foil paint cures with the black and makes the paint more durable for handling. The drawback here is, you gotta come correct on both! Your black base has to be perfect as well as your foil layer.

Great video! It's quite interesting to see how those spray can paints look when they are airbrushed. And that revel chrome is a pleasant surprise (although expensive one). One thing though, i'm not sure you get much more paint from can than from the bottle (for example alclad) because a lot of that liquid you feel as weight in the can is actually propellant (propane i think in most cases), so the total amount of actual color liquid could be roughly the same. But still, getting that chrome look is worth paying a bit extra. Keep doing great videos like this!

I've used Krylon on many outdoor train models & never had a problem on the modeling plastic used. Train cars made by Bachmann. I also used Krylon on delrin plastic train car trucks, has held up very well over the years. Note: I overspray a UV resistant clear coat to fight sunlight degradation on my outdoor train stuff. I've had very good luck over the years with Krylon on anything around the house. Even used it to affix inkjet dyes on home made decals. This finish is found in art supply stores, same as used on portrait paintings. I use the same Grex model as in the video.

Great test! I'm surprised you didn't try the Krylon or Rustoleum Mirror effect. It's expensive and comes in a small can, but it supposed to go on glass and you back it with black paint. I had a mirror commission and it worked great, but I had tried a number of other chromes before I got it and the others all just looked silver. I'll have to do a regular test to check it out, because the mirror was supposed to have an old distressed look.

I wonder if the solvent is degrading the plastic, so that the surface of the spoons and plates become roughened even though it may feel smooth to the touch on the paint surface. That may be why a shine can not be achieved. Did you try on metal , glass, or a different plastic?

OT question: Is there anything that you have seen that closely emulates Dykem Blue but that would be in some paint formula form? The question relates to me and many others making their 3d printed life size r2 d2. Based on your reviews i am gonna try a few Alclad to see what works best for the dome. It is not chrome as many try to do, It is one of the type of aluminium but i have to try a live test to see how it would turn out.
    Now...
Why am i asking that question. It turns out the the panels and the pies on R2-D2 dome were painted with Dykem Blue. The body was aluminium in the first movie so for some reason they choose to apply dykem blue on some of the parts, several layers of it. I guess they used whatever they had on the shelve on that day and continued with it.
The problem is that it is a dye and it fades over time so it would most likely not really work out on a 3d printed part.
Most people building their R2's are painting their panels and blue parts with Duplicolor sonic blue pearl and it comes close, but i is an automotive paint and i believe it has metallic flakes in the paint which looks great from far away but might be so so up close.
With your immense knowledge, is there anything that you can think of that resembles that very hard to duplicate Dykem. Maybe some sort of thin lacquer?
p.s was also wondering if you have any videos on painting on 3d parts or thinking of doing some videos about them. You are like the Wizard of OZ for airbrushing!

My results with the revell chrome.... Please beware the following...... I put a light coat on over smooth black turned out great! Maybe 30 secs to a min later I thought what the hell I'll put another coat over it... DON'T! On the thickest parts it started splitting like lightning pattern, totally ruined it. I left it in the sun to cure anyway, the parts that were good were good, sun went down and boom, the temp change turned it to a frosted silver! Again totally ruined it..
Keep it at the same temp until it cures properly. On a test piece I did get a good clear coat result with alclad klear kote. Vallejo gloss varnish (milky white stuff) totally dulled it.

love your tests. don't love the plates. flat surfaces just flash in the camera so you can't really see the color or shine. curved surfaces like the spoons work way better for recording.
