Mighty Buildings are meant to be cheaper but it's $183k for a 350 square foot studio apartment? Bruh that's basically a shed. Maybe in California $183k is a bargain for a shed but not in the rest of the country.

Yeah, but that is often true….small things are about as, or even more, expensive than big. You still need all the same things as a big house (a stove, stairs, foundation, etc) and fitting it all in often means non-standard or more expensive parts….so little price break with small things. Same with RVs…a cramped camper van can cost about much or more than a bus sized RV.

I like the ideology of the earth ship however, also am impressed with bamboo houses in Bali & the use of rammed earth. Hmm how to incorporate the three that isn’t square or oblong? Hmm 8 months on I’m now thinking, why not live in a van or RV? Wow that’s a great idea!
I wish the effects of the off-gassing of the tires was studied and detailed so that we can get an idea of what it does to the general environment the land as well as the residence
@@TruckTaxiMoveIt Many of the earth ships have been around for 40 to 50 years in Taos NM and I do not believe I have ever heard of any “out gassing” issues and since most of the homes have inside gardens and the plants thrive. Which would make me believe there is no issue with leaching anything that destroys the ground. The reason these homes aren’t in more areas is because of building codes that need to have traditional homes in order to charge the fees. And god forbid not be connected to the power grid, oh heavens!! Not all states want something they can’t figure out how to tax either. There is tons of information on these unconventional homes online and book form this 12 minute video cannot cover every aspect of these buildings.
I live in an RV, saving money and live semi comfortable. No heat or hot water, but it's the affordable way of life that is my motivation. If you need to live super affordable, it's the way to go. Found property on craigslist, it's rural, and quiet. My monthly expenses are under 1k.

Monolithic Domes 4:11 looks cool. My imagination is running wild with this construction method.
We’ve tracked monolithic domes for decades. With each kind of different construction, there are pluses & minuses. Monolithic is extremely strong...as long as you ALSO coat the outside with a severe weather resistant, fireproof exterior coating. Otherwise, all that’s left after a bad wildfire, is the then heat-damaged sprayed concrete inner layer, after the vinyl balloon cover & spray foam insulation melt off. But covered with a fire resistant exterior coating, those even survive really bad wildfires.
Interiors will echo due to so much concrete surface, so you will need to sound-tune it using sound-deadening materials cleverly camouflaged into interior designs.
They make small 1-bedroom cabins that can be loaded, moved, & set on your site & hooked to whatever utilities you want...but will need insulating, as these have been just concrete shells in the past.
I wonder if they might invent a slightly different model, that uses insulated aerated concrete instead of plastic foam...That would truly be safe from wildfires.

Wow keren fantastic construction, simple and low budget.
Learned about these types of homes an hopefully communities, in a class from Berkeley called roots to success. Very cool idea I’d love to build these or similar smaller versions as rentals. No utilities, pay back for using less, an all is there to stay balanced get out of debt an start growing. Otherwise what’s the point of renting to someone if I can’t show them how to help the earth and the local economy

Great video, thank you! Having read widely on some of these techniques, a skeptic’s view: 1. Earthships, by using tires, raise a concern for toxic off-gassing from the tires, which are full of carcinogens like benzene. Even minerals like zinc can leach from tires into soil to levels toxic to plants. Supporters argue that tires are covered in soil so they don’t get exposed to sunlight/won’t break down to cause problems, but what if a soil covering erodes down over time? Something to think about. 2. Green Magic pre-fabs are appealingly inexpensive but since the soil covering in them is pretty thin, they are not as well-insulated for cold climates like where I live. 4. Mighty Buildings are tech-intensive, which makes the process energy-intensive and fragile. If the software or hardware has a glitch, how long will it take to fix? A crew of humans may have one person out sick but the rest of the crew keep working. That sounds like a silly objection but in a world with supply chain issues, this process seems complex and therefore fragile to me. 5. Urban Rigger: How will that look in a 2020’s style superstorm, hurricane, or rain bomb? In a world where coastal flooding is being seen from California to Florida to NYC, I’d rather be inland.
You should do some research before running your mouth about something you know nothing about.
The Fiber Reinforced Polymer Panels looks very nice. But how long it last??? Can the roots of flower/plants penetrate deep and damage the panels???
And I also would like to know how much do they cost to have them built very interesting and I am interested in it

I fully understand the reasons for the tires and glass bottles but what do the cans bring to the construction. I would think they would be a huge thermal hole in the walls.
I think they are just trying to recycle as well as use less concrete, usually they are only used for interior walls i believe. Or anyone building in a cold environment could either not use cans or keep them to interior walls only.
If you watch the videos from the EarthShip TH-cam channel you'll see they were trying out all the popular unproven facts of their era. It was widely assumed as fact that glass bottles, tires, cans, and other trash could be used to build better homes that were more energy efficient, a lot cheaper to make, and cheaper / free to operate. But once he got out there to actually putting these notions to the test is when he realized they didn't add the value.
Some of these Pre-fab homes going for 500k. Thank you but I rather build my own home for a fraction of the cost.
Exactly, you could get the exact same thing for way less, but the question is, will it last as long as the pro version??
Tip for preserving wooden structures: Linseed oil or varnish will prevent mites and rotting will last hundreds if not thousands of years.. A tree fort in my area's deep woods from the 1700's still stands because of this though it is now reclaimed by foliage.. I stay away from it though because some sketchy symbols were spraypainted on the walls of the structure so IDK what it's used for nor do I want to find out

Fantastic! We're so sick of traditional boxes that all look the same. The problem with all these alternative construction approaches is simply the COST involved. Most are outside the reach of the middle class and vastly exceed the costs of purchasing an existing home. Too bad.
Then check out elsewhere on You Tube videos of Folding Homes from storage containers . All complete with electrical outlets, wiring, etc & plumbing. $40K & up too. You just need the land bought ahead of time.

the problem is builders try to rip everyone off, while the truth is that these houses are like 4x cheaper to build vs conventional, and 10x simpler. That is for a builder, they just increase profits out of greed so you cant buy these houses still.

What’s the difference in green magic Holmes versus say stainless steel prefabricated structures?
Green magic looks like exactly what I'm looking for but even though I went to the site I couldn't find a price. LOTS of advertising but no price. Probably means it's out of my budget!!
I think the company licenses their system to various builders in different parts of world. You have to contact them and ask if there is any builder in your country or state and then contact the builder for price.
Price per sq ft is very HIGH.

Earthship home first used bottles and cans under the widely assumed fact that they would trap heat better than traditional insulation. Then after putting it to the test they discovered it was all a lie. They look cool when arranged in geometric patterns.

The cheapest thing to do is do it yourself. Measure the inside of your barn and draw it onto grid paper to scale include where the current doors and windows and all poles are located. Plan where you want your rooms and how big or small then draw them on your plan. You will probably need to build footers or some piers to support your floors. Then just build your walls according to the plan. The space under the floors will be for your plumbing. I did this with a mobile home we more or less built a pole barn around it with a conventional type roof and expanded out one side 16 feet....best thing I ever did!!

I've seen a picture of a Deltec home where the wall was destroyed by a hurricane. I wonder how resistant to hurricanes the home really is.
Thank you for your response. We build very hurricane resistant homes that have withstood some of the most catastrophic storms including Dorian, Katrina, Irma, Harvey and Michael. From our unique round shape, to our engineered design, to our strong materials, we are proud of how strong our homes are. We have built over 5,000 homes in our 50+ years, many of them in hurricane zones.
Deltec Homes would be stronger if precast concrete panels were used instead of wood. Also would be stronger if the exterior walls were smooth and had no significant attachments or protrusions such as garages or staircases.
One of the benefits of a round building is that air flows around the building smoothly, producing lower wind forces on the structure than on a similar sized rectangular building. This makes them much more likely to survive high wind events such as hurricanes or tornados. But adding external attachments eliminates that benefit and just should not be done.
I visited the Deltec Homes spec. house near Asheville North Carolina several years ago. The interior design was very well done. Nice floor plan, nice materials. And the vertical walls were much nicer than the encroaching walls of a dome. But the attached garage and external stairwell pretty much defeated the wind flow benefits of having a round house.
They would be better off going with a detached garage, a covered walkway and a fully internal staircase. This would give the home a clean circular exterior and would increase the hurricane resistance of the home immensely.
Would love to see Deltec start using either precast concrete panels with shallow conical metal roofs or 3-D Printed In Place concrete cylinders with shallow dome roofs.

Most of these homes are still going to cost big money and require at least the salary of 2 above average income earners. But getting a 30 year mortgage to finance one may also be a challenge. Without financing, retirement age couples who cash in big on their California home could theoretically finance building such a house without financing. Earthships of course can be built on a budget by strong ambitious youngsters but not without sacrifices to longevity and quality and, most of all, access to urban jobs. Except to encounter severe zoning control oppositions with earthsip building even in New Mexico. Overall, these non-conventional housebuilding technologies are largely just dream homes for the rich and famous crowd. I do suppose doggie house versions of these could be built on a $400,000 budget, but then what's the point. If you disagree, or can disprove me, please do as I think some of the houses are beautiful.

Some things there are just sugar coating the normal way of building, except the 3d printed ones, but they are more expensive than a normal nuclear bunker :)).
You must not have done much viewing then. Every earthship biotecture video shows the plants growing in the greenhouses. Bananas, avocados, grapes, tomatoes, herbs, fruits and veggies that I have never heard of, and some even have tiny stock ponds. It is a bit of a misnomer that it can provide for ALL of your food needs, but it can put a dent in your grocery bill if you do it correctly.

Who else noticed the massive logs in the Earthship home? Did those come from a pre-existing homes or are those cut from forests and varnished then installed? Doesn't seem very echo friendly to me? Also do you know the amount of toxic chemicals it takes to make a single solar panel cell? I bet you don't. Sure it's echo friendly when new and in use and if made properly, but now we have china making them (cheaper and less echo friendly) and when the panels have no more use and need to be replaced all those toxic panels get put into the land dump there by contaminating the world even more. So don't think your green just because your solar, it's not true. You would be more green with wind and hydro. Here is a saying I love and that applies to everything "No good deed goes unpunished". If you use cement then that means you use lime, and lime means lots of heat to make thereby more burning of fossil fules, or wood (basically co2 emissions). Look up how plastics are made, fibers, ect, might surprise you. To be green means you have to be dirty to some extent, otherwise we would all still be living in caves. I am not against echo homes, I actually love the idea of self sufficiency and am working towards my own type of home like it, but after doing research on this stuff it is actually less green than I have come to realize and many companies lie about how green they actually are and when I asked them about their actual process they were extremely reluctant to give any kind of specific data. they all just said "we use the most modern echo friendly products", "the waste is so minimal you won't even notice it" (basically avoiding the question).
Hi, good points. Those timber beams or logs are called vigas and I think I read in an article that they are often repurposes, but can't find that article right now. Maybe it's on Earthship Biotecture website. Yeah I agree with you, no such thing as zero waste or eco-friendly unless you're building a cob house or something. In the future there is gonna be lot of resource issues, minerals, metals and other materials are gonna be in short supply.
When you look at the long term effect, a log home is greener than many. Use cedar logs which are rot resistant, plant the same number of trees as you cut for the logs, you are in the positive for reducing pollution at that point. A growing tree absorbs more co2 to grow, and the young trees will continue to absorb co2 for longer than the trees taken down would have.
There are some "cave" homes in Spain being built, so there are people living in caves. ;)
These make heating and cooling requirements minimal so reduce the energy needed.
Turbulent can power your home from a stream, if it never freezes over. Several of their hydro power systems in series can power a neighbourhood.
There are suppressed energy technologies that will be released, making solar panels a distant memory.
Why not build your own wall sections & put them up, then roof it same as a yurt, but better, with overhangs...instead of buying ready made, if you have good DIY skills? Reinvent a pole-barn? Dig your own underground or semi-underground space? How about the $50 Underground house style (4-square mining tunnel support tech)?
Look at the natural materials of your site; look at indigenous designs that happened in the area in long-past, to see what tech they used to survive what nature dishes out there.
Build with/respecting & incorporating nature, instead of against it.

When I was little, I always wanted a house just like PeeWee Herman's Playhouse. I asked my mom, and she said "okay".. but we never got one. Then I grew up, & found out it was fake. I think the most devastating thing about it to me, was the talking couch. At that point in my life .. I realized, that I will never have a talking couch.

Not one of those homes are for the do it yourselfer. Also, none of them are low cost. The laser printed houses sound good but they can never meet the need and don't offer low cost options.
Repairability is sustainability - the 3D printed 'home' is neither !
I saw 3D printed homes in South America for a fraction of the cost in the US! We always pay more! Without greed how would the 1% thrive?

hundreds of flimsy, inadequate houses were recently completely destroyed by the hurricane Ida that hit Louisiana. They will very likely re-build the same flimsy inadequate homes - and again they will be destroyed by the next hurricane. Will they ever learn? I think not - unfortunately.

Yeah you're building them houses in California to be affordable but yet everybody's moving out of California so if I was you I'd move my company to a different state and one thing you didn't mention how about fire
Plus you could probably lower the price of construction in one of the mid-west states with lower taxes and regulations. Get people out of the cities which is the real killer of the environment.

There is a lot of wrong information in this video and lot or all of problems with the design, construction, maintenance for all of the mentioned buildings is omitted. This is just marketing video.
Earthships have a nice concept but, the execution always looks like homeless people living in a garbage heap.
I have seen that. I also have seen the finished product of quite a few of them that look like rich people summer homes.
It all depends on the individual's goals, skills, and resources.
