Making a Vise Stop for a Milling Machine Vise

  • Making a vise stop for a milling machine vise has been a job on my to do list for a long time. Having a machine vise stop makes using the Bridgeport milling machine much faster. The vise stop allows parts to be accurately constrained in the X axis of the Bridgeport milling machine. The machine vise itself already constrains the part in Y and Z. The vise stop is adjustable in XYZ to accommodate different shape parts. The body of the vise stop is made from medium carbon steel that has been treated with black phosphate for corrosion resistance. The round parts are turned on the lathe from stainless steel.

Hope you enjoy the video. Having a stop on the machine vise should really speed jobs up on the milling machine. Thanks for watching.

Nice little project. Been around since the garage expansion, and I can see improvements, keep it up. Good things await.

I will attempt to recreate your design with some minor changes (mainly imposed by scrap bin content). Thank you for the nice video.

Man you lost me at the surface grinder section. Can't locate mine?? 🙂 I did get excited however at :53-1:00 when you showed your lathe panel. I have the Harrison AA here in the States. (I wish my dials worked as smoothly as yours do.) Love that machine and thanks for that tip swapping the part to a collet for concentricity. Being an amateur machinist I will follow you for the Harrison lathe alone, to learn more about my machine, as well as your excellent videos. Cheers from California.

BTW on the Harrison I love cranking in those speeds. Almost steam-punk but can't get the boiler working. :-)

I've made one of those but mine clamps into the tee slots. Yours is probably more rigid by clamping into the vice. Hopefully get to try mine in the next few days as part of my oscillating engine project. I also liked your surface grinder video. Not used one of those since my apprenticeship. Kind of mesmerising action though, a bit like a shaper! :)

Ah yeah I thought about one of those too. I'd say yours is more versatile!
"Oscillating engine project" That sounds interesting.
Glad you are enjoying the videos. On the subject of Shapers, I've been watching Abom's latest videos using his Shaper to re face an intake manifold. It's like 20 mins of just watching it go back and forth but I can't stop watching it haha. I swear he is hypnotising me..

@@Handmadeextreme Hi. Thanks for the info on your lathe. I have a rather weedy by comparison Harrison M250. I work with Remotely Operated Vehicles. Large underwater machines equipped with robotic arms that can use lots of specialist tooling to build and maintain subsea oilfield infrastructure. My job is to repair, modify and maintain them and then to pilot the machine from the surface to accomplish lots of different underwater tasks.

      Hi Al,
Thanks, i'm glad you liked it.
The lathe is a Harrison VS330TR. It's a nice machine. It used to belong to my dad's business and came to me when he sold up a few years back.

Is advisable to blacken the lathe guides and give it sort of rust protection ? Would it last as the carriage travels along it?
