I disagree with the notion that "anytime a bad guy is evil for the sake of being evil = poor villain". Some of the most memorable villains in history were evil for evil's sake. Emperor Palpatine, Emperor Zurg, Frieza, All For One, the Joker (depending on the version), Darkseid, Aku, Syndrome, Slade, and so on are all characters who don't have much reason to be villains, but are often entertaining in how much they relish in their villainy or how they affect the story and the characters around them. In Palpatine's case, his pure evil elevates Darth Vader's redemption, as while he was still an evil person himself, his fall was much more tragic and pitiable, especially when you consider much of it was manipulated by Palpatine. Pure evil villains have their place in pop culture, it's a gross oversimplification to chalk them up to bad writing.

We saw him grow to love Caesar and was very happy living in the village with his fellow apes. He did things I don’t think he would’ve ever done if he hadn’t found out about the humans. His hatred for things done to him in the past was greater than the love he had gained in the future which is quite sad to see. Very amazing story writing and character development.
Just goes to show the negative impacts that can happen when at times you choose to not let things go. Koba's hatred of what humans did to him is completely valid, but turning his hate on people who had nothing to do with the torture that happened to him is where he went wrong. Yes sometimes we all have a hatred inside of us that we aren't fully able to let go of, but holding onto that resentment irrationally like Koba did in the end will only serve to poison us and make ourselves and the people we care about suffer.
I think koba is kind of scary The fact that hes a bonobo And bonobos are known to be the most friendliest apes out of the great ape family Really shows how much anger and hatred he has inside of him for humans or anyone who works with humans
He may say Ceasar's motto but they way he says it is far the opposite from what Ceasar says. Apes together strong means the unity of working together to overcome obstacles and challenges with care, compassion, loyalty and respect. Caesar's a badass. He's not just a great fighter, but a smart one. He's injured and not 100% strength, but still managed to turn most of the fight in his favour. He uses shields or stays just as reach of Koba's swings, letting Koba wear himself down and openly targets the wound he just got, hitting him there the moment it's open to attack. Meanwhile, Koba's at full strength, but lets his rage blind him. He angrily lashes out and simply tries to attack Caesar without any thought or strategy. Kinda like how he started the war between apes and humans.
The tragic part is that Caesar did trust Koba like a brother. Caesar fully understood Koba's suffering from the humans. Yet when Koba starts killing apes for his own goals, Caesar was removing the kiddy gloves now

Y’know those memes of monsters fighting like “this is what kids picture when they play with their toys”? Yeah, this is what kids picture when they insult each other. Cinema is a joy.
Koba believes Caesar is weak because he is unwilling to fight the humans. When in reality it makes Caesar a very wise leader. A good leader evaluates a situation and looks at all the alternatives and only chooses to fight if there is no other way. If you rush blindly into battle (like Koba) then you loose lives on both sides, which is what happened when Koba took over. Apes lost their lives to a war that could’ve been avoided if Koba hadn’t struck first. This is what Caesar was trying to tell Koba, if peace is an option than a good leader searches for it. War isn’t pretty and anyone who rushes blindly into it is a fool. Koba could have let go of his hatred, but instead he let rage guide him and let his past determine his fate.
And in the last stand, Caesar helps out injured apes while Koba walks towards an injured ape but takes his gun instead of helping him. And then he fires at Caesar trying to kill him but ends up killing other apes and injuring Marice. One of the saddest betrayals in film history. Koba was with Caesar from day one, and stuck by him for years. I like to think Koba and Caesar are the same except Caesar makes decisions based off the love for his people and Koba makes decisions based off his hatred for humans.
2:30 my favorite part of this is that Koba beloved it’s true. He’s not lying, or at least he’s lying to himself with everyone else. He legitimately believed he fought for the apes ( I would argue that until Caesar beat him up in the dam and the abandoned him even when they all agreed with him it was true, he did love his ape family and while he resented Caesar’s compassion for humans he tolerated it. But after Caesar beat him up, admittedly in a fight Koba provoked even if he didn’t throw the first hit, this stopped being true)
The “Koba… weaker” line isn’t just about the gun, but Koba being morally/psychologically weak. It is a weak person that acts like Koba does. Out of selfish hatred and their own ego. It is a strong person that acts for the good of others and is willing to fight for it. The gun represents that human-like sentiment of using power for selfish reasons and harming your own people for your own sake. Koba was more than happy to pick up the gun and become like his enemy. Ceaser was not. Many of the Apes were not. Apes who were also mistreated like Maurice were strong and compassionate, willing to let go of their pain and hatred. Koba is weak because he is a slave to his own low base desires and impulses.
Koba is one of the best characters in the franchise. He has a badass appearence, A very good backstory, He is well written, when he speaks it is badass and he knows how to drive a tank. And he is also a warrior

Or would he have actually joined Caesar and both try a strategy where there is less casualties but successful victory? So many what if questions! Lol but this trilogy is great!
I just finished watching Dawn of the Apes last night, now i truly realize how beautiful this movie was and still is, Koba's betrayal really did hit Caesar hard. 10/10 movie
Koba may have said he was fighting for all apes, but really he was fighting for himself. He may have convinced all the apes about his concern for the humans harming them and may have even convinced himself. But at the end of the day it was his hatred for the humans and what they did to him personally is why he wanted to go to war with them. He manipulated all the apes into fighting for his cause and not for all apes. He even began to become the very thing he swore to destroy by caging his fellow apes just as the humans did and even killed his own kind. Just as Caesar said *”Koba fight for Koba.”*

It’s like when he saw humans again his past came back to haunt him and he wanted to get rid of it once and for all and in doing so lost everything he had gained which was a family.
@@envoyeli2892 very true

The way he says apes together strong always gives me chills
It's so hype! Incredible voice work
He may say Ceasar's motto but they way he says it is far the opposite from what Ceasar says.
Apes together strong means the unity of working together to overcome obstacles and challenges with care, compassion, loyalty and respect.
But in Koda's, it's about destruction and overwhelming their enemies in senseless violence and hatred, relying on cruelty, fear and anger rule.
@@eduardosolis6383 that’s part of the brilliance of Matt reeves. Koba is the opposite side of the coin as Caesar. Well written villains are a staple of his movies
Me, too.
I like how these characters evolved through out the films. I can see why Koba hated the humans for what they did to him but, he let that hatred consume him and let his actions be led by his hatred and was willing to risk the other apes lives to win the war against the humans.
It's actually heartbreaking how Koba, a bonobo; a species of ape known for their peacefulness and the origin of the make love not war quote, has turned into something this violent, vengeful, and full of hatred

Better, but also longer lol 🤷♂️
Which would further convince Koba that Caesar never cared for him at all.
This was my favorite scene, but no one is giving Koba’s Actor Toby props for his screams, so guttural and full of rage and hatred, I never heard a scream like that before and it chills my bones
Toby kebbel is a super super underrated actor imo
Caesar's a badass. He's not just a great fighter, but a smart one. He's injured and not 100% strength, but still managed to turn most of the fight in his favour. He uses shields or stays just as reach of Koba's swings, letting Koba wear himself down and openly targets the wound he just got, hitting him there the moment it's open to attack.
Meanwhile, Koba's at full strength, but lets his rage blind him. He angrily lashes out and simply tries to attack Caesar without any thought or strategy. Kinda like how he started the war between apes and humans.
"Koba belong in cage."
I always appreciate protagonists who are both heroic yet willing to kick the enemy in their emotional testicles.
The tragic part is that Caesar did trust Koba like a brother. Caesar fully understood Koba's suffering from the humans.
Yet when Koba starts killing apes for his own goals, Caesar was removing the kiddy gloves now
Caesar was completely right too. Koba was way too unstable and dangerous to be around.
The fact that Koba is a bonobo
Shows what abuse can do to the Purest of souls
He wouldn’t have been pure, per se. He’d have been very horny though.
I actually didn't know he wasn't a chimp.... because that's what I thought Kona was (species wise)
@@sherryelder9511chimps and bonobos are in the same genus. Bonobos used to be thought of as a “pygmy” subspecies of chimp, before further studies were done and they were found to be a different species altogether. They’re still more closely-related to each other than they are to any other ape, though.
Serkis needed an Oscar . Director needed oscar. One of the most underrated movies of all time.

I love how the whole fight takes place during dawn.
2:00 Notice how this shot mirrors one from the first film, when Caesar squares up against [Malfoy?] brandishing a cattleprod.
It showed that Koba became exactly like the humans.
Let's not forget that Caesar had just been shot a few days prior to this fight and was still healing. He wasn't at 100%, and Koba was still having a hard time fighting. Imagine if this was Caesar at full strength.
We actually did get to see the two fight with Caesar fight at full strength, and in that fight Caesar utterly obliterated Koba.
We did see that fight
Even thought it wasn’t really a fight it was really more of Caesar almost killing Koba right then and there before he remembered apes don’t kill apes

Basically monke
Koba: Koba fight for ape!
Me: Dude you just killed rockets son like an hour ago
Lmfaoooo
And in the last stand, Caesar helps out injured apes while Koba walks towards an injured ape but takes his gun instead of helping him. And then he fires at Caesar trying to kill him but ends up killing other apes and injuring Marice. It’s sad Koba turns out this way cuz in the beginning of the movie he saves Caesar and his son from a bear attack and was like a mentor to blue eyes. I think if they never got in contact with the humans, they would’ve continued living happily
@@ichangedmyusernamebecausei2551 well yes. Kobas hatred for humans and inability to forgive lead to this. I see people saying koba was not the bad guy but, while i agree his evil makes sence, he is still the bad guy.

Andy Serkis is obviously the heart and soul of the franchise but hats off to Toby Geobells. His performance was absolutely sensational as Koba.
I honestly feel sorry for Koba. He is the way he is because humans treated him so cruelly. The part where he was pointing at all his scars and repeating "human work" was the most heartbreaking in the whole series.
He was only trying to do what he thought was best for the apes but his (understandable) bitterness got the better of him. And he genuinely did love Caesar, which made it all the more devasting when Caesar struck a deal with the humans and took their side over his.
This movie is 10 yrs old and looks better than most movies today
Don’t start with that boomer BS
Love the fact that Koba doesnt try to play stupid in front of everyone about ceasar being shot by him the cats out of the bag at this point instead he plays the angle of oh im a better leader than you are and we basically won the war
This is why I’m hyped for The Batman. Matt Reeves knows how to deliver.
So, did you get what you hoped for? I know I did…

As a bonobo, Koba should be gentle and peace-loving, so it's extremely ironic that he is the most violent, aggressive one of the bunch.
There is a reason u forgot first movie?
One of the saddest betrayals in film history. Koba was with Caesar from day one, and stuck by him for years. I like to think Koba and Caesar are the same except Caesar makes decisions based off the love for his people and Koba makes decisions based off his hatred for humans.
In my opinion. Koba is one of cinemas best villains of the last 10 years.
Easily!
“Koba… belong… in cage”
That must’ve cut so deep 🫢🫢
The irony of this is that Koba thinks he won the war, but it just began
Jeez, Koba's roar at 2:40 is demonic. Not even animalistic. You'd hear that roar from Satan
Koba is one of the best characters in the franchise. He has a badass appearence, A very good backstory, He is well written, when he speaks it is badass and he knows how to drive a tank. And he is also a warrior
Ever since I watched War for the planet of the Apes, I actually miss Koba. I've always been wondering like 'what if' koba survived? Would he have pulled off the same move as he did in this film to go to war again with the Colonel? Or would he have actually joined Caesar and both try a strategy where there is less casualties but successful victory? So many what if questions! Lol but this trilogy is great!
feel like ceaser would still be alive if koba was in the movie to help
"Caesar... gay"
"Koba... gayer"

I find it very satisfying as Caesar calls Koba out on his hypocrisy and his selfishness as I pretty much lost all sympathy for Koba after he killed Ash for not wanting to go along with Koba’s insanity proving himself to be no better than the humans as the ones who did abused Koba were most likely dead by that point and most of the surviving humans only wanted to survive and not wanting anything to do with the apes only trying to get power from the dam to restore the city which especially when Koba was the one who started the war and not any of the surviving humans because of instead to waiting to be proven right, he betrayed Caesar and killed some of his fellow apes just so he can get what he wanted much more quickly, showing how he let his desire to kill the humans no matter the cost and his hated of them though understandable given what he went through get the better of him in the end.
