    This movie is, I feel, at its core, about women supporting each other. The sorority girls supporting Elle, the advisor telling Elle what she needs and not disregarding her, Elle helping Paulette with self confidence, Elle and Viviane supporting each other, Elle keeping Brook's secret, the teacher telling her not to give up... I think that's beautiful.

    When they said she needed 175 and got 179 I always thought she barely passed. I just recently realized that the scale for the LSATs is 120 to 180. So getting a 179 means Elle basically got a perfect score after studying for like 1 semester!

      I always thought the same thing. It's pretty insane when you think about it. I mean her advisor was at least realistic with her and told her what she really needed if she wanted even a chance of getting in but the fact that she needed a near perfect score and she actually got it is pretty spectacular for anyone, let alone someone who wasn't studying anything remotely similar before that

    Elle Woods is also one of the only female characters in early 2000s movies who‘s portrayed ultra feminine - lots of pink, glitter, loves fashion, etc. - who isn‘t a bully. Think Sharpay Evans and Regina George. Elle‘s looks are exactly like theirs, but her character is the complete opposite. Most of those movies had the effect that many young girls would try and separate themselves from anything stereotypically female when they entered their teens, in order to avoid the negative stereotypes. Elle encompasses everything those other movies told us was bad, and she is kind and successful. I think that‘s huge.

      It's ironic that Enid seemed to fancy herself a feminist yet treated another woman poorly for having stereotypically feminine traits and interests because she doesn't value those things as valid and worthy. Meanwhile Elle genuinely celebrates all women no matter how they dress, what they study or what their interests are and that's why most of the women in the movie are easily drawn into her orbit eventually. It's interesting because I think in any other movie, Elle would have been demonized and portrayed as the annoying one note character that the main cast ignores because she has nothing valuable to say. For example, I’m a nurse and have a psychology degree and I’m considering law school. Law is one where they don’t have to be related. They also take work experience and extracurricular activities such as leadership roles into account. Many schools also look for people from a wide range of educational backgrounds. Being the leader of a sorority, doing charity work and having a fashion degree actually makes Elle a really good candidate for law school, especially if she was interested retail or commercial law. Also in the US, law is technically a doctorate degree, not masters.

      I think both the musical and the movie both portray their relatioship very different to what any other romantic sitcom with a woman protagonist did for years. In the movie is more subtle and it really doesn´t change much. In the musical, Emmett helps her discover her potential with motivation and support. During the whole musical, he is a nice person who truly sees her potential but her lack of friends for support since everyone underestimates her. Elle also helps him become more profesional to be taken more seriously. They both suffer from the same stigma and shallowness in different perspectives, yet they help each other rise to the top without compromising their essence. The musical adds this and I find it the most beautiful thing ever.

    • @laurasalas8375
      @laurasalas8375 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    • @Probablylani
      @Probablylani 3 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      @@laurasalas8375 But the musical sets it up as a trade-off. Emmett doesn’t just “make Elle suceed.” He believes in her and pushes her. Same for Paulette, as she constantly pushes Elle to succeed, in her own way. The trade-off happens with Elle pushing Emmett to become more dignified and look the part; to be more suave, ultimately becoming more confident in his abilities. They become really close friends who support each other. Then through the bond, they realize they love being around each other. They are each other’s biggest cheerleader. It’s pretty awesome (and healthy, might I add).

    One part I always love was Warner's "I need a Jackie Kennedy not a Marylin Monroe" bit because of just how wrong it it. Contrary to popular belief, Marylin Monroe was a smart and educate woman, and Jackie Kennedy was THE fashion icon of her time. Both women were very smart and fashion forward, yet Warner discredits one just because she acts somewhat ditzy, which, by the way, she only did because the studio told her too. It was also the studio that told her to change her name from Norma Jean (btw I personally love the name Norma Jean!) and to dye her hair. That's right, Marylin was actually a brunette! If anything, Elle perfectly emulates both women!💕

    Just some comments from an American to try and hopefully clear up some confusion you guys were having in the beginning!!
    - So Elle wasn't living in a dorm she was living in a Sorority house!! In the US we have "greek life", which is when people join a sorority (for girls) or a fraternity (for boys). You have to pledge to get in, so you have to choose the sorority and the sorority has to choose you type of thing. They're kind of expensive and you have to pay to be in one. At some big state schools they have "greek row" which is where theres a bunch of mansions on a block and all the sororities and fraternities have one. (So for example, Delta Nu, would have their own special house). Again, this is EXPENSIVE so it's really only for rich kids honestly.
    - For the question if she's going to another school! In the US we have 4 years of high school, then 4 years of UNDERgraduate school (which is where Elle was) where you get your Bachelors! Then if you want you can go to more schooling called GRADUATE school! That's where you can get your masters or PhD, etc. So she was applying to Law school which is an extra 3 years of graduate school to get her Masters of Law! (Medical school is also a graduate school and thats 4 years so it ranges on what you study).
    - ALSO for the Law School thing where the professor calls on people randomly (idk if its common in other countries) but in the US in LAW school specifically it is VERY VERY common its called "cold calling" and it ensures kids have done the reading. I don't know if I agree with doing that but to each their own I guess!
    Sorry this comment is so long! This is one of my all time favorite movies so I thought I would help try to clear some stuff up! Love your content!

      I don't like commenting on old posts, but I disagree with one of your comments. You are correct except about the cost of being in a sorority/fraternity. As another person pointed out, the membership dues depend on the organization.
      This was years ago and my personal experience, but I think mine was few hundred dollars per semester. I understand how some still could not afford that amount though. The money went for events we did (both social and charitable), our sorority house (a modest 50 years old three bedroom house that some of members lived in), and to the national organization. Not only do the dues differ among different sororities/fraternities, but their specific "vibes" do as well.

    "In Legally Blonde, Elle only gets accepted because she's hot and sent a video, but she had a 4.0 and got a 179 (out of 180) on her LSATS. Sure, her major was in Fashion Merchandising but that's a business major, and the fake school she was at was supposed to be UCLA so she has a business degree from a major college, probably went to a great high school, had a 4.0, and a 179 on the LSATS and at that point, she would have been automatically accepted so why did they make it sound like she was such a bad risk? She even had leadership experience as president of a major chapter of what is apparently a huge sorority, since Delta Nus are shown as everything from cheerleaders to senators. Harvard should have been desperate to take her. She should have been able to get in if she turned in a cocktail napkin with her name written on it. So why make up the bullshit excuse of "multiculturalism" to justify letting in an extremely qualified and highly driven candidate just for laughs? Elle Woods deserved to go to Harvard and she earned that place with academic excellence and not by being hot"

    😂 😂 😂 I'm not stoned as I rewatch this reupload tonight but I have to say this, even if it may be very cheesy and fluffy, this film is such a feel good and uplifting film. Elle Woods is just such an iconic character for what she represents and how she goes about embracing her strengths and using it apply it to better herself and grow. Also, another Reese Witherspoon film I'd recommend for you both to watch is Cruel Intentions, which also stars Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Geller (who is ICONIC in it). No rush by the way, but definitely add it to your list for future videos!!

    44:29 It’s even worse when the boss/authority figure calls you in the office and whips “something” out.
    You were surprised when Elle’s law professor put his hand on her knee.
    Every female on the planet has that happen to her at least 5 times by age 25. Never expecting it. Always taken off guard.
    Career, job, hopes and plans dashed and you have to walk out and start all over again from scratch.

    i cried so many times during this, words can't describe how much i love this story and how much i love elle. you really should watch the musical based on this movie, it's really great and emment and elle's relationship is more elaborate and makes more sense but doesn't become the main focus of the story it's so amazing.

    I really recommend watching Legally blonde: the musical. The whole thing was uploaded to TH-cam by mtv so you shouldn't have copyright issued (not sure) I prefer the musical as it really explores a lot more of characters inner thoughts through song, also bruiser the dog is still in it!

  • @thinkinginn7443
    @thinkinginn7443 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I always tend to forget Vivian’s perspective when I watch the movie and focus on her and Ellie eventually learning to support each other.
    I mean, in her mind she also was under the impression that Warner was a man worth fighting for as well. I doubt many women wouldn't be intimidated if after getting engaged in a short period, the ex-girlfriend she was told extensively about, positive or negative, suddenly started going to the same college as them and their new fiancee, and was actively trying to win him back.
    It still doesn't make her behavior ok with how she talks and treats Elle, but it helps me understand how she can feel justified in it until she starts realizing she's in the wrong. That and while Elle recognizes Vivian as a rival, she never does anything malicious to Vivian herself, unlike the things Vivian does.

    Love this. To give you two some context.
    Elle is from California on the west coast where she got her undergrad degree.
    Then she goes to Harvard, which is in Boston (on the opposite side of the country) for law school. Typically for law school, you have to have an undergrad degree.
    She is legit going from public university to Ivy League, and there's a giant shift in attitude since Los Angeles is known for being easygoing as opposed to Boston which is known to be rough around the edges.
    All of this studying and character arc.... for a man??? Overall I'm happy Elle realized what happened and pretty much got a career in law out of revenge. lol
