Even with the dark tones, I love the different color splashes like the reds and blues to make a nice contrast to the darker tones which is mainly seen with the costumes. Next, the costumes. I know some feel that the punk style Cruella is inspired by is not suited for her character, but I think they miss one crucial point. She started out poor and an orphan after Katherine died. Being on the streets inspired her punk aesthetic and she grew up wanting more. While she yearned for something better, that child who lost her mother is still in there and her punk aesthetic merged with the better fabrics and designs. So it does make sense narratively. I know the controversy behind the “first gay character” is annoying, but I love Artie as a character. I like how being “gay” is not the biggest part of his character. I liked how he and Cruella had something in common and developed a friendship that lasts. He also is an essential part of the team which is awesome. The story telling and the character development is great. Horace and Jasper is not just the goofy henchman. They have minds of their own and personalities of their own. I like how Cruella is loyal to the people she cares about and gives them a place in Hell hall. She even takes care of the dogs. While the Baroness is a psychopath, Cruella is a sociopath, in my opinion. I do like how Cinema Therapy breaks her character down so watch their video. The costumes are chef’s kiss and each outfit is identifiable and iconic. And lastly, the soundtrack is amazing and fits each storyline well. Much thought has been put into this film.
this movie has been unfairly hated on, since the haters are hating on it even before the trailers came out. such a fashion roller coaster, not completely legitimizing cruella's "viciousness", but still letting us see a brand new interpretation of cdv.
I've been waiting for you guys to watch this movies since it's one of my fav Disney live-action "remake". My only problem with this movie is that I wish Cruella was a bit more evil, but I feel like making her more morally grey now leaves room for a nice descent into villainy if they make a sequel.
it'd be so cool if they really lean into this antihero concept in the sequel. maybe her skinning puppies was just a rumor made by rival brands because hers is so successful or something and then she plays into that rumour by making clothes with dog patterns LIKE I WANT THIS TO HAPPEN 😭
Baroness is absolutely a narcissist. She is showing all signs of narcissism, and quite frankly, having grown up with a narcissist myself, I'd say the people who made the movie depicted narcissism perfectly. I wouldn't be surprised if they consulted with psychologists prior to this. This is why it's important people educate themselves about narcissism, 'cause most are not aware how cruel this people can be. It's not about just looking yourself in the mirror and thinking that you're great, it goes far beyond that - it's about manipulation, establishing power and control. Beware of narcissists. 🙅♂🙅♂
I’m sorry but this is kind of offensive to me as a person with npd. I’ve been traumatized by people with narcissism as well, and the baroness does absolutely seem to possess those traits, but it’s the person that you should beware of, not the disorder. If anyone is curious why I say this, it’s a lot because of how npd is caused, which is primarily child abuse in the forms of overprotection which leads to under socialization and thus results in an inability to properly assess the motives of others, making people think everyone hates or is trying to be cruel to them and feeling they are better than those types of people. There’s also the type of abuse I personally suffered, neglect. Often children who aren’t loved enough in a certain aspect will develop npd as the brains way of trying to supply necessary support to a person who is not otherwise receiving it. Malignant narcissists are real and horrible and absolutely cause terrible harm, but please understand not all of us are like this. Please listen to us when we say there is a definite link between narcissism and harmful behavior, but also recognize that we are not incapable of change - or even that our disorder is inherently harmful to others. I am willing to answer any questions anyone has, as long as we are all being civil. I understand that narcissism is not a very nice thing to learn about, but it’s impossible for narcissism to ever be helped through if no one ever wants to try to help. Please understand I’m not trying to be aggressive or antagonistic, merely sharing my experiences and point of view.
this is really ableist in the sense that you're essentially demonizing people with NPD. there are many many good people who just happen to have NPD, her being an asshole has nothing to do with that. just say she's selfish and an asshole, there's no need to bring in a term that's directly related to a disorder especially when you can't control whether or not you have the disorder. however, you *can* control whether or not you're a selfish asshole, and you can be a selfish asshole even if you don't have NPD.
I appreciate you both talking about the adoptive vs biological family dynamics. People in the adoptee community were upset and triggered with the "real mother and other mother" language used in this movie but I don't hear or read about anyone else discussing why it can be problematic language.
I imagine they’d go with more of an adoption move concerning the 99 puppies in a sequel. Pongo and Perdita did only have 15 puppies of their own and adopted the others in the original. They might just have the Dalmatians all be adopted to avoid incest maybe
I'd definitely recommend for the future watching Ice Princess or I, Tonya! Ice skating movies are so interesting to watch and both have some really good actresses. Margot Robbie kills it in that role.
What I love about your channel is I can watch the videos instead of the movies with a great commentary as a bonus. On repeat. And it never gets boring. I saw some videos fifteen times and it still feels fresh.
I just watched this recently and had the same happy surprise by the intrigue and consideration. Only because the dalmations-killed-her-mother plot was talked about and it seemed silly - but it was just like you said, on-the-nose, which is fine, because that's the tone of the whole movie, and they have fun with it 💛🌙🌟✨
They are making a second one and I really need to know if they are going to continue with this sensationalized by the media thing like they did with her wearing the Baroness's dogs in this one. I can easily see that they turn it into she starts collection and breeding Dalmatians and people assume its for a fur coat.
This movie made me thought of my maternal grandmother who was very good at sewing and wanted to work at the sewing workshops of Paris (I'm french) but her mother didn't want. Fun fact : in France, the music played when Estella is drunk, is used for the publicity of the perfume " La petite robe noire " (the little black dress in english) of Chanel
Another fantastic reaction and a really fun movie! Not gonna lie, y'all accidentally calling Once Upon a Time Ever After makes me really hopeful that you'll be doing Ever After next because it's such a fun and good take on the Cinderella story.
Thanks so much! We do really want to get to Ever After, but we're not sure how well it'll do and we need a bit more certainty with our movie choices for now - Sam
The psychology of this movie is fantastic in the way it reveals what the dalmatian spots mean to her. The blots in the book mean disapproval and compartmentalisation, then they also take on connotations of childhood trauma as they are used to kill her mother. Then she gains power over those feelings by stealing the dogs as an adult and uses them for her own ends, Culminating in a pattern that will bring her ultimate success in the medium that she has always used to express herself...fashion. Stunning.
SHOUT OUT TO FELLOW AUSSIES!! I absolutely love this movie, it's one of those rare pieces of entertainment that just fills me with a concentrated sense of confidence and creativity. Really fine stuff. It's also special to me because I saw it in theatres when I finally got my lisence after a good number of tries. Was not expecting that day to go or end as well as it did. Plus, I know some people have issues with Estella's instant turnaround into Cruella, and I won't deny that it is kinda one of the more sketchier parts of the script, but I have the theory that the reason for her being so mean was because it's closer to her true nature. She hasn't tempered it yet, and her whole life her true nature has been repressed and moulded so that she fits in. So when she unleashes that part of herself, it comes out with a vengeance - something it's also fuelled by. There's a lot of The Baroness in her that she doesn't quite realise, giving you a sort of mirror image reflection for both characters. And when she almost loses Horace and Jasper & learns the truth about herself, that's when she becomes a bit more humbled. She realises on some level who she had turned into and what she could have lost. At that point, she knows who she is now. She embraces that part of her personality and marries it with the caring part of herself (her relationship with Horace and Jasper, her true family). Unlike The Barkness who can't love anyone but herself and holds emotional connection as weakness, Cruella knows better. She needs her family instead of pushing them around/away like she started off doing. She was no better than The Baroness at that stage. Even her mock-funeral could be interpreted as her burying the repressed part of herself to some degree. Or maybe I'm just reading way too deep into it because I love the film so much. From the characters, the music and the aesthetic, this film is a real masterpiece for me. And I'm so glad you guys liked it too!
I never saw this because of the whole "coat of dogs" situation, but I love you guys, so I went with it. I'm so glad I did! This was amazing! I am so pleasantly surprised and it goes to show you shouldn't judge. Will you guys react to Spy with Melissa McCarthy. Or Kill Bill. Thanks!
Accidentally lied. Now the last thing. I liked the small throw away line (kind of) line of how she was willing to embrace the rumors of her being the psychopathic dog murderer showing the “who tells your story” theme. She may not be who they said, but her willing to embrace the rumors create another legacy all together. Sorry if I am wording it weirdly but that was an interesting touch.
I wasn't big on "101 Dalmatians," but I loved "Cruella." I felt the opposite about "Maleficent" (though both could've worked as stories about original characters). And I'd love and Yzma origin film.

Interesting thing: In the original book, the character Cruella was created when the author's friend at the time made a joke about how a dog's fur would make a great coat. It was kind of cool that they did that nod in the movie, imo.

I loved Cruella. Much better than any of the sympathetic backstory movies like Joker or Maleficent. The music and the fashion sold it for me. Apparently there's supposed to be a sequel. I can see why this movie won 2 Oscars.
I really enjoyed this one, but honestly, I really hope they make a sequel where Cruella actually descends into true evil. This seemed like just the tip of the iceberg.
From the second I saw the very first promotional photo of Emma and the boys with the three dogs, I knew I was going to love it. It felt right. The era. London. The fashion and direction. Emma and company brought it to life, but the setting played a major part. Craig directed a perfect live action rewatchable film.
Is there a chance of you guys doing a movie commentary/reaction of Dumplin' (Netflix) some day? It's such an underrated feel-good movie, but nobody has done a reaction video of it so far..
Of the recent live action remakes and retellings of classic Disney animated films, Cruella was/is probably the best one of them all to have been released. In regards to the "making the puppy murderer sympathetic" thing, It's not something I was begging for or anything, but I was honestly hoping for something like the Joker where the character starts off sympathetic, but ends up becoming an irredeemable monster that no one would even dare root for. While I like a lot of aspects of this reimagining, I was kind of hoping the film would go this route. I think having her ending up an anti-hero doesn't really work all that we'll for me. I don't hate it, but I much prefer she became someone I root against by the very end of the film. I honestly hope the sequel takes a darker turn down this route by having her go from an anti-hero to a full on villain. But then again I understand with the way the story was told, it makes it harder to have that darker turn. I think I just wanted the character to be a bit more sinister and as it stands, her growth is compelling but IMO it would've been even more compelling had she be more sinister to the point where we start to find it uneasy and disturbing. Disney probably won't go that route, but with all the dark stuff they've done in their movies before, I wouldn't put it past them to go even further.
I’ve been watching you guys for awhile now and honestly love you both. I love the way you guys think and are. Always excited to see you guys have uploaded 💜

You guys should totally watch Once Upon A Time! I'd love yo see season reviews or something like that. It gets weird at season 4 but then it picks back up then season 7 is pretty much like a reboot but not promoted as such
I was talking to a friend after seeing this movie. I liked the way they addressed Cruella's issues and made her a more likeable character. However, we were debating whether it would be more interesting to leave the question open about whether she made the coat with the dogs or not. To leave a hook for the sequel, and kind of force people to watch to know the answer. Regardless, I liked the end of the film where Cruella herself presents Anitta and Roger with the Dalmatians. Why she did it? This Cruella likes to do things the complicated way if it means it will be fun and not boring. It was genius of the movie to make Cruella like dogs. For us, the fact that the dogs played a role in her mother's death unconsciously planted in her a seed of hatred towards the Dalmatian race in particular. I'm fine with her trying to make the coat in the second movie, as long as she doesn't succeed in the end. That could be a good theme for the sequel, whether or not she looks like her biological mother. This could torment her, and be the character's dilemma. Bring the Baroness back. She was a great villain. There could be a scene between the two with Cruella visiting her in prison. Perhaps it could be the Baroness who came up with the idea of making the fur coat and she would be torn between doing it or not. It would be a good plot, how far she would be willing to go to immortalize herself in the fashion world. Jasper could be her moral compass and this would also help develop their relationship.
You can hear actress Tallulah Bankhead at 10:57 on the TV. Bankhead was vocal inspiration for Betty Lou Gerson's voice as Cruella DeVil in the original '61 film.

My only problem with this movie is that I wish Cruella was a bit more evil, but I feel like making her more morally grey now leaves room for a nice descent into villainy if they make a sequel.
she tried skinned puppies
@@treekid2963 Not in this adaptation which was the point of their comment
it'd be so cool if they really lean into this antihero concept in the sequel. maybe her skinning puppies was just a rumor made by rival brands because hers is so successful or something and then she plays into that rumour by making clothes with dog patterns LIKE I WANT THIS TO HAPPEN 😭
@@lance8334 okay w reason
Okay guys cruella 2 has been announced! Which was set up by the ending of Cruella 😊
Can i just say I ABSOLUTELY love all the added rupaul clips and sounds 😂😂😂😂
RIIIGHT
Some movies I rather watch along with you guys than by myself. This is one of those movies.
Emma V Emma, was such a good battle. Though she nearly sued Disney alongside Scarlett and they greenlit that sequel to this RIGHT away
Is this dumb...but how to they refer to either Emma on set? Do they just use the character names? Haha sorry I'm really dumb about this shit lolol
@@lbierman21 They probably just use their surnames, Stone and Thompson.
The Buds mentioned that Thompson called Stone 'Emily', so I imagine the rest of the cast/crew did the same.
@@lbierman21 could have used nicknames, I've worked with people with the same name and I just told everyone to give me a nickname
I appreciate you both talking about the adoptive vs biological family dynamics. People in the adoptee community were upset and triggered with the "real mother and other mother" language used in this movie but I don't hear or read about anyone else discussing why it can be problematic language.
The 2 Emmas acting, next level ☺️✨
I think I read somewhere that ppl underestimate the temper of Dalmatians and they are a aggressive breed if they don´t get the propper training.
That is true! My uncle and aunt had 2 and one was Very aggressive with anyone not family.
Oh I'd love to see their reaction to I, Tonya!!
About the Baroness "monster's probably not the right word"
Oh give it time Sam!
8:17 i love how crewella already knew how to die her hair and became the boss of there gang
Expected very little from another Disney origin tale but this was masterful
What I love about your channel is I can watch the videos instead of the movies with a great commentary as a bonus. On repeat. And it never gets boring. I saw some videos fifteen times and it still feels fresh.
16:28 The screenwriter for Devil Wears Prada also wrote the early draft for Cruella. You're welcome.
I still havent seen DWP but from what I know about it I’d definitely feel these two films have a similar vibe. Gotta get right to it then
"i dont think eating lunch is lazy..🤨"
"ahhh shes such a villain☺️"
This was set in the 1970s, which at the time was the era of punk rock fashion.
I just watched this recently and had the same happy surprise by the intrigue and consideration. Only because the dalmations-killed-her-mother plot was talked about and it seemed silly - but it was just like you said, on-the-nose, which is fine, because that's the tone of the whole movie, and they have fun with it 💛🌙🌟✨
If memory serves Arty is in the original book as Cruella's husband.
Gotta love Steph's sassy head swagger at 20:22
It made me laugh because of how ridiculous and goofy it looked when the mum got pushed down a cliff by the dog
I love that you guys do commentary on underrated movies
This video is a reminder that I need to see the movie. It’s been almost a year since it released. Supremacy of the Emmas!
@@themoviebud1988 hoping you guys can do it sometime!!
@@themoviebud1988 this movie is the closest one to the original tale
You watch "Once Upon a Time"!!!!! Omg, I knew there was a reason I liked you guys so much!!! I love that show!!!! ♥♥♥😁😁😁
The first season of Once upon a Time is amazing. The rest of it is also amazing but very soap opera like, and I love every second of it.
If this ain't me. XD
I really wanna see you guys react to “Chicago” 2002 because I think it would be a really fun reaction.
This was a good movie. Especially since this isn’t tied into the other Dalmatian movies. It’s the start of a new series.
The psychology of this movie is fantastic in the way it reveals what the dalmatian spots mean to her.
The blots in the book mean disapproval and compartmentalisation, then they also take on connotations of childhood trauma as they are used to kill her mother.
Then she gains power over those feelings by stealing the dogs as an adult and uses them for her own ends,
Culminating in a pattern that will bring her ultimate success in the medium that she has always used to express herself...fashion.
Thanks!
Artie is amazing and such a mood
Accidentally lied. Now the last thing. I liked the small throw away line (kind of) line of how she was willing to embrace the rumors of her being the psychopathic dog murderer showing the “who tells your story” theme. She may not be who they said, but her willing to embrace the rumors create another legacy all together.
Sorry if I am wording it weirdly but that was an interesting touch.
"the baroness has a kid!"
"wait does she knows this?" 😂😂😂😂
ik it meant if she knows the kid's cruella but it was so funny
I wasn't big on "101 Dalmatians," but I loved "Cruella." I felt the opposite about "Maleficent" (though both could've worked as stories about original characters). And I'd love and Yzma origin film.
I'm pretty sure her hair is a birthmark. I have a friend who has it and her eyebrows as well has silver patches. Its a real thing
Stellar video as always. I love coming home after a bsuy day at work and just chill and have fun with one of your reaction video's. We also defo need more of sassy Stef. :D
If it interests yall, I’d love to see your reaction to You Again (2010)! Also, thanks for another great video!
Me too! I love that movie!
Interesting thing: In the original book, the character Cruella was created when the author's friend at the time made a joke about how a dog's fur would make a great coat. It was kind of cool that they did that nod in the movie, imo.
I kind of like how Disney is remaking villains stories with this and Maleficient and probably much more it's giving the audience another look
Over this adaptation of the movie and the fashion was incredible, the sound track drew you into this movie. Great reaction.
This is one of the only live actions I've really liked so far
If the events of Cruella are canon, 101 Dalmatians runs into a bit of a problem...Perdy and Pongo (the dalmatians' parents) are brother and sister.
Love that you guys are reacting to Cruella. I fucking love this movie bro
Doing a moviebudz marathon LOL such good commentary from these guys.
OMG if you you guys did a why women kill reaction I would go crazy, I feel like it went kind of under the radar for how star studded and well executed it was! I know you guys don't do shows though, but still I would love to know what you thought of it!
I GAGGED WHEN YOU SAID “READING IS WHAT? FUNDAMENTAL”
I would for you guys to do once upon a time on the channel, or make a Patreon or something to do it on. It’s such a cool reimagining of Disney stories.
Just so you guys know... if you ever felt like uploading every day, I would watch everyday...multiple times 😅
This film won the Oscar for Best Costume Design. Rightfully so! The costumes are incredible!
This was an EXTREMELY underrated movie. Loved it!
I've been WAITING for you guys to watch this movie 😊 I love such costume heavy movies
Both of you mentioned wanting to watch Once Upon a Time. I know you only do movies but that might be cool to do a series breakdown maybe just go over the amount of episodes that last as long as your average movie every other week or so then have a movie in between or something like that. I think Once Upon a Time would be a great series to start with :) love your content budz keep it up
Yay! Yall channel is comfort to me. I sometimes fall asleep your previous reactions lol
You guys should watch dreamgirls, it literally one of the best musical out there, and it has a amazing cast
YESS!
they probably won’t any time soon sadly cuz of all the music and this is TH-cam
Yes I've been waiting
The actor playing Artie was on the west end in Everybody's Talking About Jamie, as Jamie.
Fun Fact:
Paul Walter Hauser (Horace) said he got his inspiration for the British accent from Bob Hoskins' roll as Smee from Hook.
My boyfriend and I really loved this and he's not usually into Disney or remakes. But we both have a crush on Emma Stone so that helps 😅
Late to the party, but the edits are on POINT. Thanka yous.
We appreciate that 😊 - Sam

Omg I missed you guys. I took a bit of a break from TH-cam for a while, but I had to come back for this one! Love it as always!
You can hear actress Tallulah Bankhead at 10:57 on the TV. Bankhead was vocal inspiration for Betty Lou Gerson's voice as Cruella DeVil in the original '61 film.
Once Upon A Time she is like a real house wife who is a piece of work don't want to spoil you. You should watch it season 1 is objectively great
Never watched this movie but still watching for my kings 😁
I love Cruella sooo much!!!
Dalmatians are very nervous dogs who are fairly apathetic towards others, but guard their owners. It's not surprising they went after a smaller dog and child they especially perceived as Not There With An Invite Of The Owner. Also, one of the guys does not look like he did as a child...
It’s really sad about the Baron.
I'm not sure if it's Disney, but you guys should totally watch Nanny McPhee and the Narnia trilogy!!!!
In the middle of watching this right now, and i love the point that stef made about Disney just backing out the gayness. BUT I would love if you guys reacted to Lightyear (i know its not your type of genre tho) because there was some undeniable gay there! ahaha
Also im stoned right now and i just want to say that i really appreciate all the messages Stef has at the start for all these random people because i agree with every single one of them haha
