I would definitely argue that Legally Blonde's messaging was a significant contributor to the makeup-and-skincare-enthusiast community becoming more empowered in the overall idea that femininity and beauty-as-art isn't inherently frivolous and can indeed be directly tied to making positive change in the world. I've casually observed as that community has grown and pushed for change using their dollars and voices, and it's been really cool to see the corporate and legislative climate change due to that influence. I think it's totally fair to give the original movie a lot of credit for helping inspire a generation to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to enjoying things for fun/aesthetic/pleasure and still caring about things that matter and having there be no need for those things to conflict.

Believe it or not, Reese was pregnant during this and she had written in her contract to get all the shoes when they wrap. She walked off this movie with like 77 free pairs of high fashion shoes

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Right? And I think it's extra wonderful that the movies still make him a complete character with his own interests, and show Elle caring about his needs and never excluding him, like how they compromise on the wedding plan but she went out of her way to make the ceremony special for him first and then symbolically still include the parts that were important to him later despite the changes. They support and empower each other without anything ever involving one-sided effort, and it's absolutely beautiful.
There are a lot of WHOO GIRL POWER narratives out there in media that I've never related to as a chick because they involve too much beating up on guys, but Legally Blonde is one of the most femme-flavored things in the world that's ever resonated with me, and her inclusiveness and fairness is why.

@@ItsAsparageese This is what we call 'relationship goal couple'. Much like the Adam's Family parents in the movies. They help build each other, compromise, and constantly work with one another to make things happen. All relationships are compromise, solid foundations, boundaries, and always finding a solution together even if it seems immovable.
Most of those 'Girl Power' movies now a days aren't about women leaning into their femininity and still being strong. It's about 'beating the bad man' now, which.. eh. I like strong men. I like strong women. Legally Blonde 1 and 2 actually are what women should look up to. If she can do it, we can too. :))

This is wholesome af. And the power of buyers shouldn't be underestimated! I'm not really all that into actually using makeup myself (not as much as I believe I am lol, I love owning a bit though), but for some reason I had a pretty extensive phase of being really into beauty TH-cam, and over several years the political and commerical impacts of cultural discourse on the beauty industry have been MIND-BLOWING. I mean, we're seeing huge international brands lobby in CHINA of all places against animal testing, because so many international consumers have stood firm on the idea that if your brand tolerates animal testing _anywhere,_ then it's not truly cruelty-free! It's incredibly cool to see what's happened in the makeup and skincare communities even just in the last decade or so, and this movie indisputably played a part in normalizing not only these values but also normalizing feeling good about having the chutzpah to stand firm about them.

After calling out the magical pink glow in Elle's hair, did you happen to notice that the moment she gets fired, it's GONE?
The term 'hopper' is derived from funnel shaped storage bins that contained grain, coal, or animal feed. The movement of the grain as it poured into the storage bin has been likened to 'hopping' or dancing. The United States House of Representatives wrote that the "hopper represents the initial phase of a bill's journey toward refinement, or final passage, much like grain when processed into flour".
The hoppers are fed from the top and emptied from the bottom. The term became particularly prevalent within the agrarian society of the 19th and early 20th century United States. Many legislators came from agricultural backgrounds, and analogies were frequently drawn in speeches between the refinement of grain and the progression of bills.
The actor playing the politician is Sally Field. Besides "Mrs Doubtfire", she played the mother of "Forest Gump", the wife of "Lincoln", "Norma Rae", "Sybil", and was also in "Punchline", and "Steel Magnolias". Before she moved into film, she starred as the TV series' lead in "Gidget" and "The Flying Nun".
Luke Wilson was doing a bad Humphrey Bogart impression; no reason Elle would even know who that celebrity is.
    "That's a LOT of phones!"
What you didn't notice was they were all PRINCESS phones. (Google it.)
"Look, those silly girls with blisters on their feet? I was one of them."
"She wasn't judging her, she was judging herself." That comment really touched me.
Sorry Budz, I happen to love "We Can"; it's an inspiring anthemic song. After our former dumpster fire of a president, "We Can" is a necessary point of hope to get us through trying to repair our government and the ongoing Right Wing crap still going on.

watching you guys just love the shit out of these movies has been such a source of joy for me in my recent super low depression. My fourth grade teacher did warm and fuzzies and I still have one that was given to me by a boy who was shot and killed due to gang related activity when he was 19. I kept it at the time because even though he was one of the 'bad kids' that landed in lunch detention with me he was never mean to me he acted out and things but he never once made fun of me or tried to hurt me and so I liked him. I didn't find out till years after it happened that he had died when I just found the warm and fuzzie note he did with my name in graffiti art on it and tried to look him up online. Hearing you guys say warm and fuzzies and see them used in a movie without ridiculing the idea for a second was just a really awesome thing for me to see. being presented with the idea of writing down little compliments for your classmates or coworkers or whatever and just being like " This is great" and moving on is awesome chill movie budz shit and I love that.

Oh, and I should point out, the only other Elle I remember from a movie, is Elle, from the Cinderella Story movie that Ashlee Hewitt is in. By the way guys, there are 12 movies based on the book, A Cinderella Story. I think you've only watched one. I've pointed this out in several comments on several videos and you've yet to watch any of them. I'm restraining the urge to fly my helicopter over your home and drop packages into your backyard with electronic messaging, making this same suggestion. Guys, I am that guy. One day, a hot air balloon will retrieve you from the roof of your building.

36:56 Well an alternate ending to the movie 'Gattaca' stated that Lincoln had Marfan syndrome (which they used to explain his height - Marfan syndrome being a genetic disorder that affects connective tissue) but since then it's been basically proven that that's unlikely. What we do know though (through letters and other recordings made by himself and those who knew him) is that Lincoln suffered from chronic depression for most of his life. Impressive he was able to do so much as be elected when he had that on his shoulders (his friends basically went on a suicide watch for him twice before he was elected0.
