Toyota did an extremely limited run of a GR Sport version of the Copen, only released in Japan, unfortunately. That just shows how amazing this little nugget is!

My wife had one of these, same engine. We are in the UK. Totally unsuitable for the UK, surprisingly, as you would think the small size and the fact its convertible would suit here. (Yes, the UK is very fond of convertibles, our weather is often more fair than not & and also not TOO hot for roof down action) The reason why is because our roads are poor condition and so it bounced and crashed over most roads, a lot of attention had to be paid on avoiding potholes. It was difficult to find parts and the oil filter could only be removed by a gynaecologist. And lastly, the rust, oh, the rust. We salt our roads in winter, the Copens came with no-rust proofing and it ended up requiring welding. Luckily for us, a drunk eastern European crashed into the back of it and wrote it off before it failed MOT (inspection) but it was a close call. Other than that, it was good fun and drove well, the engine did feel like it had much more to give if it wasnt so strangled with restrictions. It always brought a laugh when I borrowed it, of course there was the small minded homo comments occasionally because it looked like Barbies car to neanderthals but all you had to do was blow a kiss at them in return 😂
Hey boys great little nugget, cant wait to see the improvements. Quick question, I notice you use the bucket filler to refill and burp the coolant, any reason you dont use the vacuum style filler? Seems like it is foolproof in being able to suck out all of the old coolant and refill without having to worry about air pockets, just wanted to see if I am missing something.

I looked at the specs of the Copen in terms of weight, power, etc. and the Mirage is pretty good but with a 1.2 litre engine, I think it's actually capable of even more than the Copen. I love mine, big rear sway bar, coilovers, wheels, tires, and it's basically on rails.
Having driven a Honda Beat in Kansas City it made me a K Car enthusiast! Looking forward to this build, what I enjoy most about MCM is most projects are within reach of us average schmoes, no supercar baloney, just normal enthusiast cars.
Honestly guys, just bought a used car and plan to use it on track…have Castell sponsorship… Just replace ALL the fluids I won’t say specially but definitely very important is brake fluid, even tho it passes the moisture test, with the abuse coming at the track it’s half an hour of minor work for a good track day of not worrying about your brakes boiling off
They delivered these with a 1.3 'big block' non turbo in Europe. 87h thats a 20hp blip with a small weight penalty up to 825kg. Usually the 660cc turbo versions u can find are the RHD imports.
That's an epic little track car😍 If you're coming to the UK at any time, you're more than welcome to come along to 1 of my charity track days. I'm sure we can get you in plenty of track nuggets. 😎👌 FCTDC has been going for over 10 years and raised over £116,500 for charity to date.
from the side profile. if you cover one side the remaining side looks like the front of a car and if you cover the other side the remaining side still looks like the front of a car. one side is more sedan ish the other more like a VW Beetle or MINI ish
I believe there is a version of the K3-VE engine that is already turbo from the factory, the K3-VET from Daihatsu YRV turbo.. pu that in a Copen.. it would be fast..
I nearly bought one of these.... and had to the the 660cc engine. They seem to tune alright... But, then I realised for the same money in the UK, I could get a very tidy facelifted mk3 MR2 with a factory hard top. I hadn't owned a mid engined car before so the MR2 was bought. But I still have a soft spot for the Copen. That metal folding roof is a bonus for a street car... but a weight penalty too. I would be hard pushed to choose between the MR2 and Copen to turn into a stripped out fun car. A JDM Lotus had me buckled with laughter. Then I realised - 80s 90s Lotus Elan perhaps... FWD handling turbo goodness. Interesting fact about that era of Elan, KIA made the Elan between 96 and 99.
Dude agreed value for nuggets is an amazing thing for a company to offer. Phenomenal! Im not in australia but i have my own nugget and its not easy to find someone thatll cover what its worth to me. On paper its worthless
Please convert it to all wheel drive like some other Kei cars! That would be the perfect car, the Suzuki Alto Works is all wheel drive I'm really curious if you can swap parts between Kei cars.
At least in Japan the Copen got an engine that Daihatsu developed for spec rally racing in some domestic entry level class, which is why it's surprisingly sturdy and capable. There's a time attack class just for Copens running Tsukuba and other tracks. I'm not totally sure if it's the same the guys got in their's now, as international markets often get other engines.

Having driven a Honda Beat in Kansas City it made me a K Car enthusiast! Looking forward to this build, what I enjoy most about MCM is most projects are within reach of us average schmoes, no supercar baloney, just normal enthusiast cars.
The Honda Zed just came into the 25 year import rule. Already showing up. Really want to drive one. Might have to ditch a few things and get one.
Was that a wee Benny cameo at 18.25? Defo a look of approval from the big man.
Honestly guys, just bought a used car and plan to use it on track…have Castell sponsorship…
Just replace ALL the fluids
I won’t say specially but definitely very important is brake fluid, even tho it passes the moisture test, with the abuse coming at the track it’s half an hour of minor work for a good track day of not worrying about your brakes boiling off
They delivered these with a 1.3 'big block' non turbo in Europe. 87h thats a 20hp blip with a small weight penalty up to 825kg. Usually the 660cc turbo versions u can find are the RHD imports.
If you don't know, Daihatsu is owned by Toyota. So reliable etc, its built from the same stuff.
That's an epic little track car😍
If you're coming to the UK at any time, you're more than welcome to come along to 1 of my charity track days.
I'm sure we can get you in plenty of track nuggets. 😎👌
FCTDC has been going for over 10 years and raised over £116,500 for charity to date.
I've had my little copen since 2003. I love it!
Love Copens! Considered buying one a few times! Rust is a big issue for us with these in the UK however
Been binging stuff I’ve missed so nice to see an upload in the AM
you can see at 11:42 the frame is flexing. look at the seam where the door meets the rear fender. this car really needs bracing
from the side profile. if you cover one side the remaining side looks like the front of a car and if you cover the other side the remaining side still looks like the front of a car.
one side is more sedan ish the other more like a VW Beetle or MINI ish
YEEES I got a copen about a year ago and its awesome, can't wait to see the mods
I believe there is a version of the K3-VE engine that is already turbo from the factory, the K3-VET from Daihatsu YRV turbo.. pu that in a Copen.. it would be fast..
The ending of the intro to the copen was the absolute best, got chills! Cheers ❤️ 🇨🇦
On paper its worthless
i just love seeing all these cars that were never available in the US !
I am jealous. Ive always loved these on GranTurismo. We do not get them but I know Id be all about em if we did get em.
I watched and ENJOYED the racing video, and was AMAZED at the MICRO Ford GT40 replica Kei car that was there!!!!! 😮👌
😎🇬🇧
Please convert it to all wheel drive like some other Kei cars! That would be the perfect car, the Suzuki Alto Works is all wheel drive I'm really curious if you can swap parts between Kei cars.
Orange/white was my favorite color combination in racing games
At least in Japan the Copen got an engine that Daihatsu developed for spec rally racing in some domestic entry level class, which is why it's surprisingly sturdy and capable. There's a time attack class just for Copens running Tsukuba and other tracks.
I'm not totally sure if it's the same the guys got in their's now, as international markets often get other engines.
