Or I'll do you one better.. the spiritual successor the Kia picanto.. more modern version of what you would think would be the 3rd gen Festiva. Both have their charms.. but get a Festiva and a picanto and race them.
It’s true my loud but slow vr5 is at its most fun trying to cling onto Porsches and Audis on my monthly convoy drive….and yes it’s unreliable as all hell too 👌
That timing tech is really impressive. I'm used to +/- lap times or at best sector times but live time tracking that updates multiple times a second is amazing. Knowing where the gains and losses are midway through a corner is next level for chasing times irrelevant of where the rest of the field are. You compete best when competing against yourself.
Little lightweight manual transmission FWD hatchbacks are just so fun, I think I owe this car and MCM a little bit of thanks for at least partially getting me into them. Now I have a 2017 Honda Fit base model in white and it's definitely the little Honda I've wanted since watching those first MCM videos.
Legit..."Scotty from Haltech" needs his own channel... like where he hears what car guys want...he the diplomatically listens and explains back to the restrictions of what's available...then in a voice over he shreds the idea and explains why it's just not gonna happen... then at the end of the vid he makes a miracle happen. Smiles at camera smiles there's a glint on his teeth and cut to over lap of Scotty from Haltech...there we go you can have that one
Missing a lot the blue turd when watching this episodes, i loved that project. It was awesome seeing Marty developing such a linking for that tiny car. And improving it through the episodes. I was so sad when it got scrapped.
Back around 1989-1990, there was a small Diahatsu doing supersprints here in Sydney. It had the 3 cylinder motor, but I can't remember the model name. It was so underpowered that when the owner put some A008R tyres on it, it went slower. The rubber duck with the helmet reminds me of another friend, who had a Garfield doll with a helmet stuck to the back window of his racecar Mini. The reason he did that was because a scrutineer objected to his passenger not wearing a helmet.
First, let me just say thank you for giving me something to look forward to this Christmas; the holidays are hard for me. Second, keep doing what you're doing. I've had a rough year. You guys are a large part of what has helped me get through it. I'm especially grateful for Moog's video about his struggle with the passing of his dad. In a few words, I get it. I've started training for my second 5K, and I plan on doing it in the Spring. Take care, be safe, and be well.
As always, MCM sticks to their roots and makes you feel things no other car channel can. Makes me enjoy my little nugget that much more after watching these videos. Get out there, enjoy mad little cars with your friends and make memories. That’s what it’s all about.
Love the sound of that little 3 banger getting up in the RPMs. 100% fun for not a lot of money, just the way I like it. Honestly, 100hp+ in something like that would ruin the enjoyment. Awesome series guys!
As an owner of a fun lil 50ish HP car that was designed for low power, you're right. Once you start hitting higher HPs in cars that were never designed for it you wind up having to replace so much stuff that is just changes the car entirely. The car loses it's fun lil soul.
Boys, well done! Long time viewer, first time commentor. Great to see people who genuinely enjoy cars and know that it isn't size, cylinders, badge and killer wasps that make a fun vehicle.
Way to go! Always fun with a Daihatsu at the track. If you are still using the standard exhaust manifold, there are a lots of horsepower untouched . A 3in1 manifold with high flow cat after the engine will work wonders👍
Why do I get the feeling they want to take this car to the Australian equivalent of the "24 hours of Lemons" race (the USA race series for $500 cars). They have a "theme" with the rust and the roof rack car. They bought it for cheap, they have it mostly race prepped (although no roll cage...yet?) and they told Scotty to make the tune such that the engine will just run reliably for a long period of time. IF that is what Marty and Moog have planned, that will be hilarious good fun to watch. No matter what though, I will be inviting some of my car friends over on Christmas for a watch party. Looking forward to what you two have planned!

My personal obs on cars and the intake is that with few exceptions, cars fall in three big categories (and we exclude the ancient types from this). 1 small 2 big and 3 shelf cars. On small cars, the designers will put some of the best intake systems (not in terms of quality, but what they do) on the car. They want that extra power off the table and into your stomach, as much as possible. Small engine needs help to do what it does. On big engine cars or big cars in general, they don't (unless it's a specific type of car that's meant to do as much as possible, so we're talking common cars). They keep that power off and they use the IS to limit some of the power. On shelf cars, well, it's self explanatory. Shelf parts cars get their stuff from a distant cousin's brother's uncle's dude that lived in the same apartment as the brand car you own (you've seen them, lift the badge and find that VW under).
The mention of the Christmas video brought a big smile to my face! Part of my Christmas ritual when everyone else goes to bed. Can't wait for this one! 😊

I usually skip through dyno segments in videos just to see the final power, but this was different. Something about testing variables for small gains was more interesting or relatable. Don’t know why I’m more interested in 30hp than 1000hp but there you go.
I think it's because it means more real world Almost anyone can get a 1.0, and play with it abit to try gain an extra 5hp Gonna be like 1% of people with cars who are gonna own a 1000hp street car and the difference between 980hp and 1000hp won't be as noticed as going from 28hp to 39hp

Plenty to come from that car. We have been fine tuning our celica rallycross car for 3 years now both basic suspension tweaks and mostly tyres. It has been under powered compared to the competition. But it is regularly at the top of the field. The only car faster than us was a 350hp Audi S3 and was only about 1.5 seconds faster over 4 laps and the final was 3.3 seconds over 6 laps. We even did a hillclimb and came 4th. Same principle to go karts get the set up right and you can have a fast car using momentum. I have reached the handling limits of this car as is.
yes the ecu alone is probably 3 times the value of the car, most people will say haltech is expensive, personally i dont think its expensive if you consider what you getting (that saying comes to mind) you get what you pay for. so pricing on the haltech is valid and not expensive, hell nothing in life is expensive its all about doing what you can by the means or what you have. the message in this video its just to show you dont need alot of money to have fun (doesnt mean you need to put in a haltech) the are other affordable options to that would let you have the same amount of fun. do what you can with what you have not and live life, they worked hard to be able to do what they do with what they able to get/buy and have fun in the process, you can to. dont look at the guy/girl next to you look at you and at what wil make you happy.

20 years ago, my niece had a 3 cylinder Mira ( not worked in any way ), she liked it. Possibly 30 years ago a friend had a 2 cylinder, 1/5l mighty van. ( same body shell but no back seat ). Lots of fun BUT when cold, one cylinder leaked water into it and one spark plug lead was failing, warm it up, it was ok but hard to start and get moving from cold.
Honda swap it K series if it’ll fit. Supercharge it for linear power on the track with no turbo lag. That would be awesome. And also paint the car really nice. Pull the engine paint the bay and whole car.
It's more fun to drive a slow car at it's limits than a fast car at 80%... Little nuggets are fantastic.. My first rally car was a Ford Festiva (Mazda 121 / Kia Pride)
Light daihatsu's are the best. I know just what you feel. I've got a g100 charade with a 1.6 from a applause little tuned aswel and got it almost track ready it's so fun. I've raced against a lot of golf gti's and absolutly chopped them. Keep it up guys love the content❤
Full respray in the metallic red and keep it forever - plate MCM1 Please! What a great little nugget. Reminds me of my first car a Mini with roll cage and racing harness.
35KW at the wheels is about what these made stock. Getting less than that on a fully rebuilt and fresh engine with thousands of dollars of custom management is just... *chefs kiss* Tongue in cheek slandering aside, good content as always, keep it up!
@@mightycarmods I did I did, I guess I got sucked into hoping the little engine would make some magical power figure with modern computer control. I thought the standard management would probably do a good job of preserving the engine anyway, but being able to monitor exactly what the engine is doing remotely is going to be really cool. I'm hoping it's some kind of 24 hour endurance race? A lemons type thing? Some kind of charity event?
I hope the more to come involves them putting in a 1.5 3sv-ve from a terios, upgrading the brakes from a copen or other potentiallybetter source, improving the track width and fitting wider wheels/tires. Keep up the good work guys 👍
Ive found that this track has generally made cars look quite slow on camera, but this little thing looked like it was actually fast on camera, so thats is awesome. It looked incredibly fun to drive! Two things I noticed though, it seems to be hopping a bit through corners, so maybe some more suspension fine tuning is needed to keep it nice and flat. Also, I think that big long gearstick extension is a bad thing. It enlogates your shift throw and slows down your gear changes (as shown by Martys Mis shift) Other than that it looks epic.
Isn’t that daihatsu the car you started your channel? Btw. These things are actually the reason I watch your channel. 😂 I absolutely adore them! They are pure and raw that it makes the power kinda irrelevant. Love it! Big thanks for you guys for keeping making videos about these fun nuggets!
Bloody brilliant MEN, when the drivers seat and all the technology, is worth probably 3 times more money than the car itself, nothing but fun is to be had, your videos keep me motivated and massively entertained, thank you for that, looking forward to seeing what happens with this amazing little nugget Christmas day, cheers Marty and Moog

Hilarious that you cut the body kit, but left the Merc on the roof.
The roof kit does what a body kit could never do.

But lose a few laughs per lap lol. It may be worth it tho, guess it depends on priority haha
I'm guessing they are keeping the roof car for PuRiTy (of the car's concept or something) 😜
It’s an integral part of the car. If they take it off the car just stops working. Nobody knows why. It’s just how it is.
I've found that it's always so much more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. Exploring the limits is a riot.
Same thinking behind light cars with skinny tires. WAY more fun pitching something around when speeds are lower and crashes don't make you homeless.

Full respray in the metallic red and keep it forever - plate MCM1 Please! What a great little nugget. Reminds me of my first car a Mini with roll cage and racing harness.
i love this series, cant wait for the big vid!
35KW at the wheels is about what these made stock.
Getting less than that on a fully rebuilt and fresh engine with thousands of dollars of custom management is just... *chefs kiss*
Tongue in cheek slandering aside, good content as always, keep it up!
Did you hear the bit about preserving the engine for lots of laps?
@@mightycarmods I did I did, I guess I got sucked into hoping the little engine would make some magical power figure with modern computer control. I thought the standard management would probably do a good job of preserving the engine anyway, but being able to monitor exactly what the engine is doing remotely is going to be really cool.
I'm hoping it's some kind of 24 hour endurance race? A lemons type thing? Some kind of charity event?
I love how you trim the side skirts and chin spoiler to increase “aerodynamics” but you left Moogs vw up on the roof! Lol
I hope the more to come involves them putting in a 1.5 3sv-ve from a terios, upgrading the brakes from a copen or other potentiallybetter source, improving the track width and fitting wider wheels/tires. Keep up the good work guys 👍
Let me break the secret..congratulation MCM on joining kcar global race event @ sepang malaysia. 😁
These are reasons why the Mazda Miata is so popular. Same idea. Small, lightweight beaters that are fun to drive👍
It enlogates your shift throw and slows down your gear changes (as shown by Martys Mis shift)
Other than that it looks epic.
Great Video Guys 🙂
Great to soo you guys at KCar Global few days ago 🤙
Bloody brilliant MEN, when the drivers seat and all the technology, is worth probably 3 times more money than the car itself, nothing but fun is to be had, your videos keep me motivated and massively entertained, thank you for that, looking forward to seeing what happens with this amazing little nugget Christmas day, cheers Marty and Moog
for long track days I wonder if ram air bonnet scoop type air intake to scoop cold air above the bonnet ?
here for the nugget thrash! reminds me of the 2 cars in japan
