I replaced that seals on a Daihatsu Cuore recently, can't find them here in South Africa so went to a parts shop and they said it is a normal 40x25 seal, they gave me a high pressure hydraulic seal in the size and it works very well .
Any seal you may have, it's always going to exist in a similar or identical form in the hydraulic world. Most manufacturers, just take those seals and reuse them. So if you ever find yourself not finding a seal, speak to a hydraulics dealer, explain the sh!t you're in and ask them to help you dig. Have a case of beer or something and they'll help you out. I've made friends with them because most of the cars i keep around the stable have this issue.
My friend and I have basically been doing this same showdown for the last year. He has a JDM spec Copen, I have a Fiat Panda 100hp (very similar size, weight and power to the UP GTI). We both bought our cars as broken wrecks. His was saved from the scrappy with some welding and refurbs, mine had a HG failure and worn out everything. Now both cars are on good suspension and tyres and being entered into hillclimbs, track days and other motorsporty things. Copen is better in the corners, Panda just wins on the straights but our times in all disciplines are always very very close. Both of us have kept the engine power standard so far but this year the Copen is getting more boost and the Panda is getting more air and a better ECU... and so the battle continues. Really enjoying this series.
Living in the US and being into import cars for 20 plus years, a Daihatsu Mira is my number 1 dream import car to own, and it’s all thanks to these 2 Aussies and their love for nuggets
Had a nissan pulsar, rocker cover was leaking, quickly found out you cant just replace the seals over the spark plug tubes so i just grabbed a tube of rvt and good attitude to seal it all up. Worked like a charm
looking forward to seeing what arrives in my Shiela's Big box and Mystery Item (on their way to the UK). Been telling everyone that will listen at work (Lotus Cars factory) to order and check out the store.
The splash plate that covers the seal u use cutting pliers and cut small 5mm sections around it bend it open with normal pliers , replace the seal and nock the 5mm cuts back with a socket of that size.
One of these used to run at the Mt Cotton hillclimb. He had a bigger turbo, trick suspension and slick rubber and was putting in times better than the 2 litre class. You both should consider running un a few hillclimbs too. They are harder than circuits as they are very technical but you both have that mindset.
Hi sorry to jump post did you get a second email to say when it was coming. I ordered just over 2 weeks ago but only have a confirmation email for my order
My dad used to modify the rocker cover of a Kelisa to replace the Coil Seal like that, and just lock the backplate in with a screw. PS : He was pretty much the first batch of mechanic back in the day for Perodua.
Gluing seals can be a pain. It's mostly down to the glue itself. Super glue is a bad seal with temperature cycling like an engine. The superglue cures hard but is brittle, and once broken, it won't seal. Try a temperature suited soft like glue that remains flexible with the rubber and seal accordingly.
When you open boxes, cut the ends first, then raise the top. You can then cut down the centre. This will save you cutting into valuable goods that are sometimes sitting just beneath the top. I wax a storeman for many years. Ask me how I learned this?
@mighty car mods Cool to see you have the rotary buffer. I have one too, plus the mini buffer they do. Can't wait to use both in the summer when the UK weather improves. All the best, and great job as always.

Just a helpful tip for those using super glue that you can use baking soda for the glue to instantly dry. (have a very light dusting of baking soda between the point of joining that you add a drop of CA glue)
This kind of reminds me of my first car when I moved to the US. If I remember it was a 91 Suzuki Swift GTi. Almost a blend of the Copen and the Up. Maybe that could be a future build. A little bit of something for both of you.
I have fond memories of making gaskets from gasket paper for my Datsun 120y (you need a 120Y!), I loved the innovation with the Hoonda gasket, however the failing point would have been the join and it would have leaked worse than before. Fantastic the original showed up 😉, loving your content on everything. 1:08 whose bonnet is that?
I drove a friend’s Honda Beat in the Kansas City area last year and the more I see of K cars like this the more I like them. I’m restoring my Bugeye Sprite right now and after that, who knows??
Marty you forgot the baffle plate for the valve cover! Thats gonna make the pcv valve suck the engine oil directly into the intake. Happened to me once when i replaced the seal for a Kelisa
I met Moog yesterday at the formula 1, I may had fan girled a bit according to my wife. Absolute legend of a guy, So friendly. absolutely made my day. Got a great photo with him and my boys. :)
The measure of an engineers success is truly gauged after the test of time. And the engineer that designed that rocker cover and gasket system is a spud. Just make them easily replaceable in order to avoid multiple causes of failure and the need to throw out many rocker covers.
Nice to see how this project came together. I do wonder if you might have an oil consumption problem with the oil deflecting shield removed from the inside of the valve cover. It could be a problem especially when you are running hard on the track. Orher then that, it looks like a total blast to thrash!🙂
For your seals and any bearings, try a bearing and seal place, take it or the measurements and 9 times outa 10 they will have what you are after, same for 'O' rings. Saves being swamped on the interwebs. My go to is Statewide bearings, they generally have it on the shelf, if not they get it fast
Tip if you have access to a high temp parts washer i.e like a dishwasher type cleaner and cant get certain new rubber gaskets then put them in the parts washer and it'll soften the rubber and get you out of trouble.
The baffle plates for turbo toyota/daihatsu motors are actually air oil separators. That's why there's a breather port even though there's a pcv valve. When i removed this plate, my oil consumption went to 1l/1000km. Reinstalled it and went back to nothing.
M539 Restorations has a very detailed video about paint correction and polishing. Everything Marty said is completely opposite of what other professional detailer’s talk about when comparing DA/random orbital vs rotary tools. DA “sanders” are prone to producing “pig tail” scratches.
