KTM 790 Adventure R Update

  • All, it has been far too long. I finally got around to putting together an update video both for the channel as well as the KTM 790 Adventure R. Since the last video I've sold the KTM 1090 Adventure R and the KTM 790 Adventure R is now my only motorcycle.
    Even though there are a few minor complaints I couldn't be happier with the decision. Fully equipped now with Mosko Moto Reckless 80 luggage and sw-motech tank bag it is truly a lightweight adventure dream.
    This one was done in a motovlog format so there will be some wind noise, but hopefully not too bad. Recorded on the Sena 10c Pro in combination with an iPhone. Let me know your thoughts on the talking head format vs the motovlog format.

    I have just sold my 1090r and purchased a new 790r. So it was timely to watch this video
    I agree with the comparison you have made between the two bikes. While there are a few things I miss about the 1090r the 790r more than makes up for it and I have no regrets. It’s such an easy and manageable bike to ride with more than enough power. Just love it 👍

    Thank you for this very informative video. Two experiences are making me look at this KTM: purchasing a BMW GSA and realizing it’s such a pig - especially off road....and, riding my brother’s Ducati scrambler and realizing how much fun a 400 lbs bike is...I finally sat on one of these at the Dallas international motorcycle show. Absolutely love the fuel saddlebag concept. I was worried about the lack of power, but you have convinced me that there is enough grunt to make me happy. Thanks!

    Great comparison Vid! Thank you! I Believe the COG adds to the real lighter feeling with only 56 Ibs of weight loss difference between the bikes. As I first did not think 56 Ibs would be that big of a change from the 1090. I am 280 Ibs and love having the 125 HP on the 1090. I do ride a lot of freeway to get to various areas out here in Utah. I had a F800 GS with 85HP and that was horrible. Did not do the job. Yes I would like cruise control and the fancy display and more clearance plus the lower center of gravity the 790 has but I need that power especially for long street and off road trips. I bring a lot of gear. This due to if I do break down out there I will survive for at least a 3 days in 100 degree desert heat. So for my type of build and riding Moab, San Rafael swell and desert 3-12 day rides loaded up with a lot of gear as light as I can permit the 1090 works for me. After 4 layovers in a 1 hour span of time I am spent but I sit and rest for 15-20 minutes have a cool beverage laugh at myself, take in the view and I am off again. Just a note, when find a camp I remove all the gear and ride hard off road within a 10 mile radius around the camp. So I will keep the 1090. Love your vids and thanks for your comparisons!

      @@Bouldertag Yeah, the 790 does seem pretty cool but I think my 1090r is a dream bike for me. A good mix for a more off-road oriented adv/touring bike. The power really helps me get going when I need it. It is fairly tall and can be heavy but I am getting used to its weight coming from a cb500x that was tiny in comparison.

      So true. I have 3-4 pickups in me before Im spent on my 1090. Definitely would not trade it up for a 790. The way I see it is the 790 is only 100cc more than the 690. The difference in power and stability between the 690/790 and the 1090 is huge.
      The better comparison for the 790 would be ktm950, 990, gs 800, tiger800 etc.
      790 and 1090 are completely different entities

      @@zetterberg Very true. It would be like someone comparing the 800gs vs 1200gs bmw. Very different in many ways. Taking the 1090r is fun off road. For a bigger bike, it feels pretty light. As with most things, momentum is your friend. FYI, I had to speed this video up pretty fast.

    I went even lighter and swapped my 1090 with the new 690 Enduro. Definitely gave up some road worthiness but total confidence in the dirt. New motor is surprisingly smooth for a thumper and plenty of power. Bike is very nimble and not much you can’t tackle.

    Great review. Your best comment was that the Rally throttle setting in “intoxicating”, I totally agree that the 790 has all the power I need. Also, great explanation on the cruise control kicking off over bumps due to traction control. I thought it may be the rear brake lever bouncing slightly. I cruise for miles with no hands and learned to grab the bars approaching bumps. After 5k miles, my only failure is my fuel gauge reads empty. I checked the float, and it moves freely in the fuel sender tube. Waiting for a new fuel sender unit.

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I love the bike and I can’t say for certain that it explains the cruise control behavior but I’m very confident that is what is happening. If you watch closely when it happens you’ll probably notice a quick flash of the TC light at the same time. My fuel gauge works to the degree I think any of them do. From what I’ve read it’s simply the design of the tank itself and the sensor being at the bottom. Glad you’re enjoying yours. Each time I ride it I like it more and more.

    I was waiting for this video for a long time!
    Since I have a 1090 R, and ride it pretty hard off road, considering buying the 790R. But I was a little afraid for its' "developing foult's' " (for being a new design).
    However, if the Rally version will be available in Hungary (unfortunately it's not likely being such a small country) I'll try to purchase it.
    When I talked to my dealer about the 790's problems, He mentioned the fuel gauge it miss functions because they used the 790 Duke's gauge extended version...
    Thanks again for the honest opinions, and for the time and effort for this video.

    For me, I prefer the 1290 adventure S, this is my 4th big KTM including the 1190, 1290 super duke and 1290 adventure R, test rode the SD GT and the 790, my type of riding is long distance and some gravel/fire roads, the 1290 adventure S is the best for me, its fast and it can go off road and carry all my crap around like nothing. The R model with the 21 in wheel feels so bad when you are going fast, 80mph or more, I don't see how people ride with that thing, I like to go fast when possible, the 790 is nice for short distance and lots of off road, yes you can take it on long trips but its not ideal for that, just my opinion, I will buy another Super Duke just to keep on the side, love that bike too.

    My 790R still has cold start issues with 6K miles. Fuel sender failed, but fixed under warranty. R Windscreen does have less buffeting on the low setting, and the taller S windscreen in the high setting works much better than the R at highway speeds. Waiting for my R/G rally windscreen to arrive and hope it works as good as the S windscreen.

    Update. So, the dealer called me today, KTM sent a rep to the dealer to look at the bike. Apparently there are some sort of oil ports that allow oil to lubricate the clutch, on my bike, the ports were clogged with what appeared to them to be locktite from the factory. KTM is covering everything - they are replacing every single part that got even a slight scratch on it from the crash I had due to the clutch failure (over $2000.00 in parts) at no cost to me. Apparently this is a bit of an issue with some 790 Adventure bikes, as there are a few videos online of guys who had similar issues. It sounds like KTM may have a recall on this issue coming soon. All I can say is that KTM is going making good on everything for me - so I am very happy and looking forward to getting my bike back.

    Well, I have had my KTM 790R for a few days and 200 miles. I road it off road and got into a spot where I had to do a pretty steep hill climb in the woods with lots of blow down and the clutch overheated to the point that I had to adjust the cable to get out of the woods. I let the bike cool down and readjusted the cable and rode it on the road and it seemed fine, went off road again today and the clutch is completely fried - i had to trailer it off the trail. I have a KLR 650 with 14,000 miles on it and it has the original clutch and I road that thing a lot harder and worked the clutch the exact same way. I hope I did not just spend nearly $16,000.00 on a bike that will be completely useless to me for the offroad riding I prefer. I am calling the dealer tomorrow.

      @@kdemotorsports I had the bike in the non rally off road mode. I spoke to the dealer yesterday and without looking at the bike he could not say for sure, but he suspected it was something other than just the clutch that was wrong. I am dropping it off there today - just sucks that it is a 5 hour drive one way and I will have to make two trips. I will keep you posted on what was wrong.

    I thought your review very interesting because owning a BMW GSA for 5 years now and having done several off road trips, I thought I need something less heavy, easier to pick up. Then I started looking for some middle weight bikes. Then I asked myself the question if I wouldn't regret the lack of power and would a middle weight bike be suitable for my type of riding meaning a lot of street, highway mainly during the year and once a year an off road trip. And occasionally with pillion. I have tested the Tenere 700 and I found it great but maybe the engine was too "soft". Then I thought about 790 R (better for my height, I am 181cm) but haven't tried it yet. KTM dealer told me to come for a test ride, when all this crisis with coronavirus will end, now all shops are closed in Switzerland until further notice...
    Knowing that I do only 10% of my time off road, the KTM dealer was more pushing me for a 1290 R or even a 1090 R rather than a 790 R. But for me, if I have to stick with a big 240 or 260 kg bike, I keep mine. don't you think?
    What made you change from your 1090 already? In your opinion, could be a middle weight bike like 790 R be good enough for commenting every day?
    Nick Sanders, ambassador for Yamaha, told me that traveling with T7 with pillion and luggage won't be a problem, so if a 73hp can do it, I imagine a 95hp bike can do it as well.
    and yes I am struggling a bit...What is your opinion?
    Thanks and sorry for all the story
    Paul

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      First thanks for watching and I love the long story. The 790 I love obviously if you’re doing 2up though it may fall short there. Plenty of power but I think if 2up were a frequent thing something like the 1090 might be better. I will also say that although on paper they seem similar KTM has a way with these bikes if off-road is enjoyable that the other mfgs just can’t match. Riding both the 790 and the 1090 I think would be a good way to understand their respective differences from each other and even the GSA. Don’t get me wrong the GSA is a great bike but I’d still personally take a 1090 over a GSA if I were planning any serious off-road. Just my opinion. Now why did I go from the 1090 to the 790? I knew I wanted the 790 when I bought the 1090 but didn’t want to wait another year. I loved the 1090 and it rides way smaller than what it is. However when you drop it the weight is there. I ride solo a lot and I like to take little offshoots and the 790 just gives me that confidence do it alone and not worry about wearing myself out after a couple drops. Hopefully this helps although it may just further confuse. It’s really a personal choice and a lot of it comes down to being honest about where you want the bike to perform at its best. For me personally I love the 790 and think it is that ideal blend of on and off-road offering exciting riding in both situations. But again I don’t do any 2up riding on it. Good luck and keep me posted I love hearing others stories and experiences.

      @MrPaulo1400 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      kdemotorsports thank you very much for your answer. I was also thinking about the weight of the 1090 when you drop it. 2up is occasional and short distances, for the moment. I will try both bikes with her and make up my mind. Cheers.

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I keep an open mind as any new bikes become available so it’s possible. However what I can say at this point is that for the past 4yrs I’ve purchased a new bike every spring. This spring I’m not even shopping or looking. That’s how pleased I am with the 790. I don’t feel I’m missing any power so something larger displacement isn’t probably something I’d be looking for. Something smaller unless there are major changes that make it more road capable I probably wouldn’t be looking at either. So for the foreseeable future I’ll be sticking to the 790. But I won’t make claims that it will never happen again. Usually when I do that is about the time I see something that grabs my attention. 😂 thanks for watching!

      That’s difficult to say and I think would depend heavily on the ratio of off road vs road riding. I suspect off road an even smaller and lighter bike would certainly have it’s advantages. On road I think the 790 would be more desirable. Would be nice though if they offer both options.

All that said I do LOVE my KTM but being 5'8 and 155 LBS the 1090 is still a lot of bike when I ride the hard trails. I have really been wondering how different the 1090 and 790R are between highway riding. I hate the pavement but sometimes have to spend a few days on them when we ride BDR trips and have to slab it back. Can you elaborate on how different they are and how much if any more wind fatigue you get riding them. Thanks so much for a good review and not some waste of time like other who have never ridden one off road.

      You’re very welcome and thanks for the comments and watching. Now onto your questions. They are definitely very different bikes on the highway. However it depends on your highway speeds. 80mph and below you won’t notice that much of a difference. Above that speed you’ll notice the lightness of the 790 which is still stable but by design is more sensitive to steering inputs. As far as wind that is an area where you definitely feel a difference. It may be fixable with S windshield or aftermarket. Personally I don’t find it unbearable but I also don’t do long highway runs frequently. Hopefully this helps. 1090 is again noticeably better on the highway but the 790 is noticeably better off road. 😀

      So at 80mph I feel like my 1090 starts getting a little squirrelly as well. I agree about the windscreen comment and have added a taller one to my 1090 as well. I am really curious about overall comfort and if you get into windy situations does it get pushed around even worse. Thanks

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kermit G yes it does get pushed around more. The effects you are expecting given the weight difference between the two are real. The comfort I personally find it comfortable enough but the seat is definitely better on the 1090. Given the size the 1090 is roomier so I think it really comes down to what percentage of each you do. If you spend a larger percentage on the road I’d say stay with the 1090. If you spend more of your time Offroad but need to for an hour or 2 here and there cruising the highway I think you’d be happy with the 790. With potentially a few upgrades to solve the wind hitting you more and the seat comfort.

      @@kermitg8918 Your 1090r should never feel off at 80mph. That sounds like a different issue altogether. That sounds like a possible wheel or steering stabilizer issue. I love the 1090r.

    What helmet is that? Modular, hi vis available?

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is the Arai XD-4 not available in hi vis or modular design. I purchased it because I have personal history with Arai helmets that gives me confidence in them from a protection standpoint. It is kind of heavy and noisy relative to some of the other options on the market.

    I don’t think electronic cruise control is available for the 1090 R

    Is the KTM twice as good as the KLR, because it costs more than twice as much.

    • @jimenagulla9081
      @jimenagulla9081 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I had klr650, and the 790R, is so much better it's not even comparable.

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The short answer is yes. But I'm saying that because to really get a KLR ready for similar levels of capability there more upgrades needed I think. Where the KTM is pretty much ready to go right out of the box. I've had both bikes and don't get me wrong I loved my KLR but there is certainly a big enough difference to justify the price gap again if you are looking at what it takes to setup a new KLR to similar level of capabilities. Which isn't even possible anymore since they aren't selling them anymore. I'm not speaking to used prices though that isn't fair. In that arena check out my KTM 950 vs KLR 650 because used the prices aren't bad at all on those bikes. Bottom line though enjoy what you enjoy, it is nice to have so many good options. The KLR will always have a special place in my heart.

      Yes mate its 3 times the bike, if your putting around slowly then maybe not but if you want to ride hard its on another planet.

      @@stonethecrows5334 According to this table the KLR gets a total score of 12.75, while the Husky FE350 gets the best score of 14.25. The 790 is not in the table but it wouldn't take long to work out where it sits. Using these figures the 790's not worth double the price. - www.everideadv.com/best-dualsport-motorcycles

      Daniel D here in Australia the 790R is 3 times the price a DR 650, that $16k difference is a lot of fuel in the tank not to mention time of work for travel.
      The 790R is also more expensive than the 1090.

    What about oil leaking, everybody is complaining about that?

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t have any oil leaks at the moment and haven’t yet. I’ll post updates if any of the problems being reported I experience. The only issue I’ve had is cold starts. The bike will fire then die and it does this about 3 times and on the third start it runs and idles fine. I am hoping they come out with an updated mapping to solve that. It is just a minor annoyance though.
