Review - KTM 790 Adventure

  • KTM's 790 Adventure is the short suspension, slightly road biased twin on the Adventure R. It's a bike that claims to be the best off-road capable touring bike on the market and is taking direct swings at the customers that don't want a tall, long travel Adventure R bike.
    The end result is a rather mixed bag. The 790 Adventure rides like a very focussed machine and the direction of that focus is interesting. KTM are a brand that famously stick to their ideology and the 790 is no different. It's a bike that know whats it's doing, does it well and leaves little compromise.

    Very good review but I begg to differ. I own a KTM 790 Adventure (S or non-R version) and I find it a fantastic touring bike, even with a pillion and with the panniers and the top case fully filled. Yes, the seat feels stiff when you sit on it but it gets quite comfortable on longer stints. I've made 3,30 hours long continued stints and my butt did not suffer. At the end of one of those stints, my wife wanted to travel a bit further (!!!) to enjoy the landscape and the natural light so we mounted again and rode further 150 kms. So, not only the seat is much better than described in this report but the bike works phenomenally well in a much wider 'window' than Llewelyn Pavey says it does. Other than these two notes of disagreement I'd only fault this review for not stating emphatically how easy it is to ride this bike.

      Seats are definitely a matter of opinion. I did about 1800 miles in 4 days on my 790 S....... Let's just say I ordered the Seat Concepts foam and cover kit the day it became available. Stock seat is a torture rack for me

      I think you've missed my point here. The window that Im refering to is comparing this bikes to others in the class and esepcially the R model. The 'S' can do all those things fine, but other models do it better. The adventure is however, a very manageable bike, I agree.

      @@michelwaknin9893 , I have 3 KTM: a 1290 Super Duke GT, a 1290 Super Adventure and the 790 Adventure. In the past, I had a Honda CB500X, a Yamaha MT-09 Tracer and a Kawasaki Versys 650. I have had no major problems with either KTM, although they tend to require a bit more maintenance than the Japanese bikes. The KTMs are much, much funnier, though.

    As a 790 ADV owner, I completely agree with this review. For years I have been crying for someone to build a sport bike that can go off-road. All the good performance ADV bikes are too large for me. All the smaller ADV bikes are too soft and tie themselves in knots in the corners with my riding style. KTM should have called this bike a Duke Adventure. That’s what this bike is. Its not a small light weight GS. It’s not plush and comfortable. It’s tight and agile and engaging. It needs you to keep it on its toes and is happiest when you are pushing it. If you are looking to relax and cruise, it gets kind of clunky and jittery.

    Thank you for such an unbiased and honest review of both bikes. I've seen all other magazines and websites raving about the two bikes, but none of them have mentioned such things as suspension on the Adventure (more street oriented) or the hardness of the seat. To me it's just paid marketing. So great job on telling us the good and the bad!!!

    I have the 790 (non R). It will be 2 months old on the 28th of October. So far I’ve covered 7,500 km’s on it, through 4 countries including 2,000 kms off road. The bike is amazing. I have a short inseam (5’8” with 30” inseam), so the non R was the only option for me. I have ridden a lot of 10 hour days, with no issues whatsoever, but I do have the ergo seat fitted. Other extras I had fitted include heated grips, cruise control and rally mode. I am on my second set of Michelin Anakee Wild’s now, had the first set fitted for a day at Sweet Lamb followed by doing the ACT Portugal. Excelled on the ACT and then did 840 kms in one day from Southern Portugal to Javea in Spain. I love this bike. It may not be as good off road as the R, but in my opinion it is a country mile ahead of Tigers and mid range GS’s.

    • @BrakeMagazine
      @BrakeMagazine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is miles ahead of those bikes, you're not wrong. I currently think there are two other bikes we've tested that are in the same ball park for actual adventure riding; The T700 and the R 120 GS Rallye Sport.

    Question is : if to get the perfect bike you swapped out the suspension aiming for fully adjustable and a 800 seat height. What would you recommend?
    Buy the R and swap the suspension?
    Buy the adv swap the suspension?
    What suspention would you use?
    Or just cry and put up with the 790 adv as stock

    I had a shock when I saw the video, as I haven't seen Llewelyn since he was about twelve years old. His father is multi-times Dakar Rally finisher Si Pavey who runs the BMW off-road training school in Wales. Reading Si's Wikipedia entry it seems in 2015 he and Llewelyn were the first father and son team to enter the Dakar (and both finished), so huge respect! Llewelyn nailed it right at the beginning saying the S was for shorter riders, so rather than a constant comparison between the S and R models, it would have been far more interesting to compare the S to the alternative bikes from other manufacturers for shorter riders.
    I do a lot of solo adventure touring in remote areas, and my main reasons for getting the 790 S were tubeless tyres, tank range and relatively low weight. I didn't agree with everything Llewelyn said-many R owners have also complained about the 'crashy' suspension on their bikes and I find the S suspension about what I expected. It's an adventure bike, not an enduro and if I want to tackle difficult stuff I have a 690 Enduro R with mousses which is 50kg lighter. And the seat is fine for me, you just need to move about. At least KTM's approach with the R/S variants is better than BMW's with its 850/750 bikes where the 750 is a crippled version with lower power engine (despite also being an 850 bike), 19-in front wheel and many other deliberate differentiators.

    Hi, brilliant, a review that gives clarity about suspension. I love to ride back roads in the Yorkshire Dales, and have no desire to thrash along the faster valley roads, so the ability of the suspension to provide an element of comfort riding at slower speeds over a rough surface on a twisty tarmac road is what I'm interested in. I could go on, but just want to say great review and please provide more of the same.

    Where've you been? This is by far the best review of the bike I've seen. Although I love KTMs, I really don't understand some of their decisions. The 1090 Adventure (not the R) also had non adjustable suspension and was highly neglected by their marketing in favour of the 1290 SAS. KTM would have sold more of them, and of this bike, if adjustable suspension had at least been in the Powerparts catalogue.

      We've been here 18 months now! It did and I agree on the marketing front.
      It's not well publicised at present but you can get upgrade, aftermarket suspension from WP. KTM own WP and make all of the suspension for their bikes. It's also not really on the website properly but if you get in touch with WP in your country they can definitely help :)

How the 790R behaves on the road, is it the same great experience as 790s? Mostly I will ride on roads, but want to enjoy offroad at 100%. The mirrors do suck and the suspension is stiff but 90% of my riding is 2up and street riding with some gravel road riding. 2 people the suspension is better with the added weight. If u ride dirt/off road a lot get the “R” version definitely.

    Thank you. As a life long Harley rider this bike is near perfect. It is my opinion that you should buy the closest you can find to what you want and then modify to make it your own. For instance a seat concepts seat. Then respring and revalve the forks. Then a good skid plate and tires of your choice. At this point the tires will determine what this bike is. This would then be a bike personalized and performing to me. And i can reach the ground. I am not racing it, i am not out to impress anyone. I just want a good all around bike. I have my old Harley that runs and handles very well. Soon my S version will be the same. For the most part you nailed it. KTM says the R is a dirt bike that can do the street. The S is a street bike that can do the dirt. I think and it is just my opinion that they nailed it. There is no perfect bike off the show room floor but this is close. For me. Thank you and be safe. And yes, rally mode is very cool.

    I’m looking for the lightest bike that can go on the rack on the rear of my travel trailer that will hold my wife and I (400lbs) and that I also might actually enjoy riding solo. I feel that the stiff suspension and solid chassis will be suitable for us. I have sat on this bike with her and it’s fits nicely and doesn’t sag down excessively. I also like the seating, it’s more forward for better two up balance/center of gravity.
    What are you thoughts with that weight on this bike?

    So, for a guy that is 5’8”, with a 30” inseam, that puts the priority on dirt riding but has to ride the pavement to get there, which bike would you recommend.......the 790 standard and have the suspension reworked, or the 790R and buy the lower seat and have the suspension lowered? In addition to the concerns of off-road prowess and height, there is also expense. The standard 790 is selling well under MSRP near me.

    i like very very much your reviews and this channel. I’d like to have your opinion on this matter: In your comparison with other bike, you consider always the 790 r version. Would it change anything, for example, if you compared the S version to the AT? You said the R is no doubt a better bike, but it would be the same for the S? Everybody says the S is a fantastic bike on tarmac, but i feel the front wheel a bit wierd sometimes, not so reliable wheh you bend. And when the tarmac is not smooth right in the middle of the road and you for example overtaking passing between cars, the bike skid a little bit to much and that’s scary bcs you risk to make a front. AT is imore reliable under this aspect as far as you know? Thank you for you reply and greetings from italy (sorry for the macaroni english)🤪

I do think it's interesting how reviewers have come to different conclusions about the bike - such as Brett from Mototrek - and the expectations of many (such as shorties like me) thinking about a mid-sized go anywhere machine. It does show that marques can interpret the ADV genre very differently and build a machine (or family) accordingly. As ever, one has to test them to see which is best for each rider's needs. Keep up the great work.

    Everyone says what an amazing review we have here but I totally disagree. Ktm adv s was never supposed to be the substitute for smaller legs for the R version. Or the cheaper alternative to it. This guy spends a few minutes saying that it is not as good as the R version but: with the R suspension you don’t want a hard break maneuver on tarmac or your teeth will taste the ground. This review only focuses on how better is the R off-road in comparison to the S but once more: the R version is an off-road bike with good road capabilities. This means the S version is more comfortable on road and better because of the suspension. And the S version is an on road bike with good off-road capabilities. Saying these please reconsider this review. I have tested the S and the R and in my opinion: if you plan to drive at least 50% off-road and you are a good enduro driver, the R makes sense. But if you plan to drive sometimes off-road but mostly on road or you are not a enduro experienced driver who drives 100km/h on gravel... to me does not make much sense taking the R... but all in all opinions are subjective. Check the review from MOTOTREK, that guy is just amazed with the S version. I have seen many reviews and all say the same: think if you really need the R, because you probably have enough with the S...

    I liked this review - the guy clearly knows how to ride and what he's looking for in a bike - however, I have a slightly different experience. I own a 790 Adventure S and am a shorter rider (5' 6") and for me this bike works beautifully. I recently took it on a 15 hour trip over the course of 3 days and I loved every minute of it. I did mostly road with a bit of offroad mixed in to get the feel of it. The seat is roomy enough to allow for position changes when things feel stiff, and it's a hell of a lot comfier than the same trip would've been on my Ninja. Granted, I'm not the most experienced off road, but it seems like you can ride this thing harder in the dirt than a 500lbs+ GS - I mean what he's showing in the video is harder (in regards to handling, not necessarily terrain) than how I expect "Adventure" bikes are ridden on a regular basis out in the dirt. The 790 feels more like a dual sport in that regard. He is correct that it's not super agile in very slow speed situations. But if you're short, like touring, and would love to explore off the tarmac - I think this bike is a great pick. If I had 2-3 more inches on my inseam, I would've gotten the R, but I don't, and this bike is the only thing like it in its class.

    • @BrakeMagazine
      @BrakeMagazine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you've mistaken my review a little, because a chunk of this is relating to it comparative to the R. The S is an awesome bike and I agree with most of your points. Comparing the comfort to a ninja is a bit like comparing an apple to an apple pie. They're kinda similar but they're not. The roominess is nice but the seat is hard. Like I said, you might like that, but it's not comfy>
      I disagree that this version is better or can ridden harder than a GS. The R version, I believe that to be true but the suspension is phenominal>
      However, the 790 is a great bike. i think my point is that, this is not an R with less suspension. it's it's own bike and the pro's and con's are things I point out. Whether you like them is subjective and the point of a review is to be objective and allow the viewer to decide if the bike is for them :)

    Just wondering... If one needs a lower bike, can't he/she simply replace the ADV R seat with the one from the S version? And if I want to take my ADV R a little bit more on the highway , can't I simply mount the windshield from the S version and set the suspension on a more road friendly mode?

    • @BrakeMagazine
      @BrakeMagazine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, yes you can. I think the R is pretty good on the street with the suspension as is. It's plenty stiff enough to balance fun and comfort :)

    • @therealturbofanisme
      @therealturbofanisme 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The S seat only accounts for a small amount of lowering. Most of the lower height is in the suspension.

  • @Snowhite808
    @Snowhite808 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Softer and more comfortable seat cushion will be around 100-150 eur.
    The suspension can be dialed pretty well also on this - for 500-600 eur.
    The rest is just the same. Without the failing xplor components and for a lot less money.
    I say the S version is good for 70-80% of riders.

    I feel a bit torn on your review. I've got 3600 miles on my non-R 790, and while the suspension is definitely firm, I don't find it super firm off road, and in fact when pushing it a bit it gets too soft and begins to bottom. I believe the stiff mid-stroke is an attempt to mitigate bottoming. It's definitely not the most supple setup, but it's very responsive and I still feel it's quite good off-road.
    100% agree on the seat, though. Awful.
    Ultimately for me, it was two things that pushed me to the S: availability and seat height. If I would have wanted an R, I'd still be waiting. Have been riding my S all summer and having a blast :)

    • @BrakeMagazine
      @BrakeMagazine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like our opinions are exactly the same. The mid-stroke stiffness is to add control to a more basic suspension unit and if you push it too hard it blows through. :)

    Any bike that doesn’t have that max plush suspension just when the tyres start to fade replace them with what ever road or street handling tyres you want as most of the shock absorbering is done through tyres not suspension. Tyres can make the difference between a street bike and an off road bike.

    Thank-you for the great, honest and clear Review.
    But it has got me wondering,
    i have had a loaner 790 adv for the past 4 weeks( my normal bike is an 1290saS and after getting it back I think the 790 would be a better bike for me) and really thinking of trading my bike in, i really like the concept of the low c.o.g. and the engine is sporty enough really
    and the whole bike give you more of a feeling that you are one with it and more in control . on the open road its give great confidence to ride pretty hard,
    bad tarmac and speed bumps are not very forgiving.
    anyway the question, suspension wise would the R make a better daily bike for motorway travel inner city riding and weekend warrior stuff? is it possible to set the R suspension up so it gives a sporty ride and comfort at the same time?
    If I did go for an R i would go for the high screen and the 2 piece saddle
    or should I get the standard 790 adv and have the suspension rebuilt?

    • @BrakeMagazine
      @BrakeMagazine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think your question depends on how you feel about the suspension. For what you're describing, the Adventure is a better bike than the R.
      You could fit the parts to an R, but it's taller and for street riding its a compromise. I'd stick with the Adventure and you'll get used to the suspension. If it still bothers you after a few weeks, a suspension tuner would help. 😊

    • @fmommen

      I have the same concerns. The R is somewhat too high for me, I ride only paved roads (I owe now an R1200RT), but my one day ride on a 790 was awesome. Only the hard suspension and saddle bothered me.
      So you say the R's street riding is less exciting as the Adventurers ? You would not recommend the R for solely street riding ? Even with the better suspension?

    Man, how to unpack. I am planning a trip from Miami to Cape Town, South Africa. Yah, that long. I just returned from a trip from Miami to Thailand on a BMW F850GSA. I also have been on a trip from Columbia to Ushuaia on a 2018 BMW R1200GSA. I still own the F850 and R1200. That said, Africa can be different... I think 50% roads and 50% dirt/grassy/gravel/rocky/muddy. I am so worried about weight and maybe I'm overthinking it. I LOVED my F850 on my Miami-Thailand trip which was really 70% road and 30% off-road. I am really thinking about getting the 790 Adventure. I am the model 5'9" shorter guy. No way can I ride the "R". So, wondering if I should get the 790 Adventure and get aftermarket suspension? Would you bother changing bikes? I do love my F850GSA like I said, but off-road, it is a bit sketchy -- although not that bad... Again, its the BMW's weight that bugs me. Thoughts?

    • @BrakeMagazine
      @BrakeMagazine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The BMWs weight is made a lot worse by the suspension. Makes it feel super top heavy.
      WP sell the same suspension that is on the R, in the same travel length for the S, so you could have amazing suspension with the lower seat height.
      You could also buy an R and have the suspension shortened. That would be cheaper.

    A pretty good review, however, I disagree with a couple of areas in your review. Seat comfort. I have performed 250+ mile rides on this bike in one sitting with no issues. This is in direct comparison to my s1000R seat concepts seat, my dr 650 procycle seat, and my ktm1190 adventure Sargent seat. In addition, I agree the suspension is stiff, however, when using offroad, I have found the suspension superior to my old tiger 800 roadie (I would bottom out all the time) f650gs (twin, I would bottom out all the time). I feel the suspension on this bike allows for quite aggressive off-road riding, on double track and rocky terrain. In fact, when riding this motorcycle off-road the stability inspires more confidence than any other mid-sized adventure bike I have ridden. In my humble opinion after 30 years of riding and owning many mid-sized adventure bikes and 2 large (1190 adventure & 1200GS) I feel KTM hit the sweet spot with this bike. I love touring on this, stable, great wind protection, and (my opinion) comfortable. I personally think this bike is the best adventure bike we have seen in the last 10 years (covering distance, gravel, and dirt roads, think dalton highway and BDR routes). I believe that the standard model has more off-road prowess than you give it credit. Thanks for the review.

      First, thanks for the comment. Some food for thought; Seat comfort is something I'm literally comparing to a) Every other ADV bike currently available including KTM's own 790. That blows it out of the water. b) The tiger XR models and the F 650 GS have terrbile suspension and the 790 is okay, but blown away by the R, as I said in the review. Otherwise, the bike is awesome and better than pretty much everything else.
      My main issue is that KTM have produced literally one of the greatest bikes ever in the 790 R, and sold this one a little short of what it could be :)

    This review is confused on its base of what this bike is, which is a reaction to the market demand. It’s not a budget version of the 790 Adv R, but a base that does not include the upgraded suspension with 40 mm more travel & more street oriented tires. This version is for the Adv rider who knows they will mostly ride street, can manage off-road, but will not be hitting extreme trails reserved for enduro. It’s a “fits all” class with road bias compared to the R & is not being marketed as a tourer but made known it “can” tour with accessories; there are already enough bikes that fit that segment.
    This is a middle weight, meaning it’s not a cheaper 1290 or even 1090 update, but a bike that weighs 416# vs 500# which is very important when you’re maneuvering a switch back, crawl decent, or picking it up in the Alps or Rockies once down. It’s attempting to find the sweet spot between the 1250 GS guy who wants to Adv but can’t pass all the trails due to weight & the CRF450 guy who can ride anywhere in the dirt but isn’t going to like the 100 mile street ride to get there.
    This bike is also extremely off-road capable compared to Africa Twins, 950’s, 1090’s, GS, etc when equipped as R. All the power needed in the trail, lighter weight to manage, & electronics that allow you to get through unexpected terrain. 100’s of hours on TH-cam of this bike in serious terrain from mountains to deserts to swamp, some show skilled riders getting good air even at that weight. Compromise is this bike isn’t going to get loaded up like larger Adv & tour for 3 weeks.
    Essentially, if riding mostly street with occasional off-road, S is the option with better street experience. If taking serious trails & keeping up with enduro buddies, opt for R for suspension & it is still fine on road. If you want to get a bike better on street, 790 Duke or your brand but Adv group is not fire you.

      You are correct, this isn’t a smaller budget version. 790 S is the base, oriented for the larger market that will ride on road much more, but will want to option to go off-road if needed. Suspension travel & tire choice make the 790 more streetable while Adv riders who know they are going to challenge serious off-road opt for the additional 40 mm of suspension travel & Metzlers while accepting the minor street compromises. Choice driven: 790 Duke rider who wants to occasionally off-road = S, Adv rider who wants to ride to the trail but knows he is trying to keep up with Enduro riders in rough trails Ops for R

    A rider with some heft or some loaded panniers may mitigate the stiffness of that rear suspension. Most ADVs get loaded pretty heavily, and although I don't know how heavy this reviewer is, he does not appear to be weighty. I'd enjoy a review with this motorbike packed for a tour.

      I don't think they will. The stiffness doesn't come from springs, it comes from valving. As you load the bike up more, you'll end up sat lower in the stroke of the suspension and it'll get even stiffer feeling.

      So this isn’t a do it all adv bike. I ride an AT and I’m looking for something lighter(easier to pick up solo) to do all of the BDR’s in the U.S. There are paved sections to deal with and many 1000’s of miles on road and severe off road sections. I don’t want to go the dual sport 450 route. I do not want to by pass the expert sections and I ride solo. This 790 has to be reliable, comfortable, handle everything I need to carry to live off grid and on for 4 months. Reviewing it or any adv bike in the weekend warrior situation is near useless. Please please say something that encompasses the adv lifestyle. You’re saying if, not if, when we load this bike to travel it will squat the rear suspension which throughs the geometry out the window and it’s not adjustable. This “ADV” bike should be graded a massive fail if this is the case.

      That does not make any sence. I like KTM becasue of its fuel tank. Finally a bike that does not need crash bars. It adds another weight to the Tenere. And fuel tank is small on Tenere, yet more top heavy.

      Srad Steve I don’t know how long the presenter rode the bike, and where, which type of terrain, because I own one and I’ve ridden 1600kms in 3 days Tarmac, awesome. Go for weekend off-roading, suspension is more than appropriate with great response. Where is he getting this “monstruous” stiffness? This isn’t the rally version or an enduro bike... Would be great to see the rally mode of this 790 and all his experience with it on video.

    All you have to do is to go to a KTM dealer and jump on the bike. Done. You don't even have to ride it to realize it sucks for long distance travel. Unless you like to ride a 2X4 piece of wood with concrete suspension. That coupled with KTM's notoriety of dodgy reliability and idiotic design makes it a true lemon.

    • @BrakeMagazine
      @BrakeMagazine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you've applied some unfair logic to that. I agree on the seat, but KTM have some great design ideas and have a great reputation in off-road world. :)
