Just wanted to say that was hands down one of the best reviews of anything.. I don't know anything about the bigger bikes and after watching this review I feel like I could get on one tomorrow and figure it all out. This is the standard to what all reviews should hold to. Thanks for all the great info and hard work! If I was looking to purchase this bike, I would feel comfortable that I know enough about it to not have many unanswered questions.
I have a 70R that I have over 6500 miles on it and finished the CABDR a couple weeks ago. Did not realize I could select Offroad throttle response and still control the amount of traction control slip, until I watched your video. I thought is was only available when Rally throttle control was selected. In most situations I prefer the offroad throttle setting. Good video.
Finally, some one actually talks about the fact that we have been waiting for an adventure bike that is "midsize" and actually carries 20lts of fuel, meaning we can actually use it where it is intended. A 1000 mile ride with a 250 mile section between fuel stops, and this bike can do that, bingo. It looks like you ride where the bike is built for. Dirt adventure long hauls. If you compute up any more numbers on fuel range please post for us. Any adventure bike that cant get 250 miles plus, safely just doesnt work for a bunch of us.
Notice however that the 790 is actually only like 25-35 llbs lighter than some existing bikes with similar power ...it is NOT super innovative startling achievement etc...in fact a lot of guys are going to bolt 30 pounds of glitter on it and still have a pig of a bike....a 465llb bike with added crash bars/ heavy duty bash plate, overstuffed seat upgrade/pannier racks and cases/ bark busters/ raised bars/auxiliary fuel tank/ heated grips etc etc is going right over 1/4 ton mark and too damn heavy to lift up tired
I've been thinking about getting into biking and it's surprising to me the very limited range of most bikes. There are some roads I want to travel that are 250 miles between fuel.
Dougie Quick you make very good points about the weight. I’m debating on a 390 adv to replace my 1190 due to wanting light weight and off-road touring ability. An exc isn’t a highway bike. Despite the 390 shortcomings I think most people would ride better with it than a heavier 790 or 1290 simply due to being a lighter platform.
I've got a 500 EXC and a 1290. Have ridden the 790 and its a dream offload compared to the 1290. On the street not so much. Gnarly offload on the 1290 isn't much fun for me, but I'm not 30 years old either. The suspension seems soft on the 790 but easily changed. I've never ridden a 690 so no opinion. Maybe I need a 790? Gotta get the wife a new house 1st. Great review.
I agreed with everything you said, and pleased that you mentioned those horrible tyres. I found that the cornering under hard brakes or power on dirt was disproportionate to how the felt upright...weird. I've adventured my 690 thousands of miles and it was the only platform for getting some serious adventuring once modified for distance. Now the 790 is starting to appeal, as the harder stuff I've done has left a few scars, and how you described it capability...really, really makes me want to get out there again. damn it.
Any Updates on KTM 790 Adventure Clutch failures and why KTM will not warranty them .. Yes I know many clutch failures could be do to no clutch cable free play .. but I have heard from life long riders that maintain their own bikes are having clutch failures with clutches that were adjusted properly ..
About one year later, you can find a ton of these second hand here in Belgium. Eventhough the Tenere outsold it by a ratio of 3:1 (3 Tenere's for 1 790) it's still very hard to find a second hand T700...
Great video, I like the rundown of all the minute specs to demonstrate the added value over other off-road bikes, although I felt swindled with the quick-shifter as a DLC option on a ride by wire bike. Never ridden a KTM but now im sold!
I'm looking forward to the release of the 390 Adventure! I think that bike will be all I'll need but it has to be a cool looking bike and functional. I hope they don't drop the ball on this bike... I think my choice will be either the 390 or the T7..
Another great video Eric, really appreciate the level of detail you provide. KTM owes you a commission, your 690 video had a lot to do with my purchase a few months back, my 1st adv bike... so far, best 2 wheel decision I ever made... keep em coming, love to see more 690 info
True. Their 2019 690 Enduro R video is great. I had bought mine before that, but still, learn a bit with it. I'm loving mine, even in a more "aggressive" use!
You should do a comparison between the 790R and 690 Enduro since you mentioned both bikes are "made for you" curious which one is the better bike in your opinion overall
It's not that hard guys.. it depends totally on you.. and mostly where you want to ride This bike is truly in a class of its own.. you can either think of it as a lighter, better handling big Twin adv bike, or a heavier, porkier enduro. To me, it is replacing my Africa Twin simply because it has the same power output, but weighs almost exactly 100lbs lighter plus that fantastic suspension which is the best in the business. So what that means to me is I can take it everywhere I have ridden 15,000 miles on my AT, and almost everywhere I was willing to take my Husky 701... I'm keeping my 2011 KTM 530 for the gnarly stuf tho..
Funny how the speed feeling is relative. You were driving at 30 between trees and it felt you were going crazy fast, and later on you were at 60 on a road and it felt so slow :) BTW just a note, when you're showing menu options that would be great if you could lean on the bike so we see closer.
I’am every interested in this 790 KTM thanks to your amazing video beautifully made. You put your all into a well informed technical and visual analysis, thank you Sir!
Really love the features of the R but the standard is more realistic to what I would actually use... I wish the standard had the option of the R's upgraded suspension.
Thanks for an in-depth review. I am picking up my new KTM 790 Adventure R on Friday 1-3-20 and this video explained it all. Looking forward to getting back into motorcycles after being tied up with work and raising a family. Now time for so great adventures in the Carolina’s . Happy New Year
Very well done review. Well, as for firing order on a parallel V twin, I DON"T CARE WHAT THE BIKE SOUNDS LIKE! Pick the firing order which works best, THE END. Now as for all the electronics, lean adjusted ABS, 900 traction control mode etc etc. Many want all that and more and I say those who want it should have every option they want and be willing to pay for it. I DO NOT WANT ANY ELECTRONIC GARBAGE and I sure as hell don't' want to pay for it. What do I do when it rains and I have no electronic rain mode, back off on the throttle and ride like a sane person. Again, if you like all that and you want all that and are willing to pay for all that by all means get it and pay for it. How about an electronic free option for those of us who are allergic to all that stuff, or just flat out hate it and do not want to pay for it? I would love a KTM 790 electronic free bike and I plan to buy one as soon as my local Yamaha dealer gets one in, they call it the Tenere 700 option. No electronic anything and a 1 button ABS off. KTM, give me what I want or I keep buying something else.

La veste est très belle en bleu blanc rouge. Par contre le pantalon dans les mêmes couleurs est peut être trop voyant. Pour une sortie off road ça doit être bien mais pas pour aller au travail tous les jours :)
Very interesting and informative review - best I could get without actually riding the bike. Wish it had been around when I was riding big BMW'S, Triumph and Honda's - XLV750.
Sheesh, I can't decide between an F800GS and this... tough one. I don't like the tank location and headlight of the KTM, But I have a KTM dealer in town and BMW is 100 miles away. FML
V twin bull. I rode in single (twin) two stroke 250 Yamaha in 1973 right on baby. Ok ktm are ok. I put biggest gas tank and get roll. Thanks great presentation. Thump up and subscribe.
Why do you say you had a quick shifter added, when what you mean is you paid three hundred bucks or so to have the feature unlocked? Did you pay to have the cruse control turned on too? The real question is when the electronic garbage goes down as electronic crap usually does. Will your fourteen thousand dollar dirt bike leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere. KTM's always make you smile for a mile. Its best to buy two though, so you'll have something to ride while the other is at the dealer being fixed regularly.
Lance G. I took a look right after this video lol. He just kept mentioning these KTM riders and I didn’t know who they were. I know who Marvin Musqion is, Cooper Web, Jeffrey Herlings, Tony Cairoli, Blake Bagget who actually rides for Rocky Mountain ATV A’s does Benny Bloss and Justin Bogle, but this guy kept mentioning pros I’d never heard of. But now I know.
Eric is 5'8" as well and there is not much you can do about the seat height without changing the suspension. But KTM does offer a lower seat option for these bikes.
I watched your video on the 690, so of course I wanted that one.... Then I watched this and now this seems better.... Then back to the 690 and that seems more appropriate... I just cannot decide dammit...
You look like an experienced knowledgeable older guy, so there is questions for you. What happened to knowing the limitation of your bike and use the throttle, feet, breaks, steering, balance & judgement to control your bike without all the electronic aides? I'm really concerned that this bike after several years of serice (when the warranty is out) the electronic will fell on me. Also another concern of mine, travelling in places where the gasoline is not good quality (third world country) how would this bike handle with the poor fuel?? if one of the sensor brakes will the bike have protection cut off, that you no longer can ride your bike because of the electronic failure??? I feel like if you want to take this bike in the third world country, you probably will have to have electronic plug in reader/computer, so when did check engine goes on you know what is going on with your bike. I feel like Adventure bikes should be made simpler so you don't get stuck in the nowhere land, because the electronic failed on you.
I don’t want to buy a bike from a company that makes you pay a subscription fee to utilize the electronics. The bike is already way expensive up front then they want you to continue to pay to use the electronics on a bike you own? No thanks.
I'd have to try a heavy bike like this one, but i can't really think of going through very technical stuff, specially after being used to small and lightweight bikes. By the way, not to bash you Eric as I don't do videos and I can't even imagine how tough it must be, but try to relax a bit when you're saying what you want to say. I'm sure you'll get even better with the next few videos ;)
I do not understand why those driving modes are so important, I think it is terrible!! good drivers have those in their brains, they do not use all those modes when they drive. Instead of buying an over-potential motorcycle, you better train and learn to control your bike without al those electronics.

How different is the 2019 from the 2017 ?

how did you find the weight of the bike ? coming from a ktm 250exc , how easy is it to lift up ? ...

If the Clutch Burns Up you are screwed KTM won't cover it .. There may be a small oil passage that gets clogged..
Is the front tire on backwards? Strange to see a pattern like that...
Can you turn traction control off completely? I would want to be able to full throttle that with the tire spinning 75mph going 50 up a hill.
Yes, you are able to turn off the traction control (MTC) completely off.
Great review, helped me make a decision.
Rally throtthle is more aggresive than street throttle. I prefer to allways use street throttle. Only rain mode has reduced power.
Why do we still use dry weight ? So add 70 lbs.
Can u please tell me what state you are riding in so beautiful. And the County that is thank you
