BYU Football Rolls Wyoming & Still Has Questions Lingering Even With 3-0 Mark | BYU Cougars Podcast

  • The BYU Cougars improved to 3-0 on the season with their dominant 34-14 win over the Wyoming Cowboys and Jake Hatch said the performance was workmanlike and was more impressive than many are giving Kalani Sitake and the BYU football program credit for due to an absurd defense and imprivng offensive output spearheaded by quarterback Jake Retzlaff.
Jake then took some time to examine three particular areas of concern for Brigham Young University (BYU) to address before they open Big 12 Conference play next Saturday with the third down efficiency being downright abysmal, opposing quarterbacks killing the Cougars in the run game and a need for more consistency in the run game despite injuries
Finally, the show wrapped up with listener reaction to the win for BYU with thoughts on Pokai Haunga, Gerry Bohanon, Chase Roberts, and Darius Lassiter, among others, as well as what BYU fans want to see from the Cougars as they now turn their attention to Big 12 play with a need to see them level up in a number of areas ahead of the Kansas State Wildcats showdown.

How does Jake make Retzlaff mvp? Should have been picked at least 2 more times. A whole slew of errant throws. Against much better defenses Ret,laff will look just like last year. 7 games are enough to show what Retzlaff is and what he isnt. The 3rd down debacle is squarely on Arod.

Here's the problem. We just got to deal with so many years is Tuiaki's defense "getting it done" because we were winning games. His defenses were terrible and set BYU back 1 to 2 years. Arod and the offense are currently in the same situation. Arod and Retzlaff are "getting it done" right now but we saw last year how our early wins were a mirage. Unless we win 8+ games this year, Arod needs to be let go, and we have to figure out how to address the QB situation because I truly don't believe retzlaff will get it done in big12 play. I hope I'm wrong, but the "getting it done" argument would work better on me if we hadn't spent so many years not making changes because we were "getting it done".

A for the offense? A for aggravating. They scored 27 against the same defense ASU hung 48 on. They hit Bronco's expectation of 24 so that's a C. But given there were at least 5 interceptable passes keeps the fans in edge despite the BYU medias' attempts.
B for the defense? They do need to be able stop 3rd downs and qb runs in obvious situations at the goal line.
Special Teams. Well that td return was great! And the field goal kicking was solid.. But one play can't them an A. Subtract the spanked punt and the bringing the ball out of the end zone for a loss probably leave them at a C

What would be the conversation if they other 2 possible INTS were actually completed? Would we still be saying this about Jake? He still seems to take too long to settle in. He's making some really rash decisions and his arm is questionable. Its not the positive vs negative with him, its the inconsistency to be great. He's either playing as bad as you can in a QB or as great as a QB as you can. Theres not inbetween. I want consistency. I still say he is on a short leash in Big12 play.

  • @viccram70

The issue the coaches are concerned about with Jake is a few things, Turnovers, 3rd down conversion rate, scoring inside the red zone. Against a bad Wyoming defense Jake got the numbers and thats why you read some fans say "look at Jakes #'s" . If Jake continues to turn the ball over at the rate he is now the Big 12 beat up this offense. Jay Hill needs to be a Cougar for life. After 1 and a half years of recruiting and walking into one of the worst defenses in the Big 12 Jay has made this defense fun to watch, when's the last time you watched a BYU game to see the defense? Jay is a master evaluator of talent and gets guy's the big schools either miss on or Jay get them to BYU and will have what he needs in the next year to rival the best defense in the Big 12 with Utah. 10yrs for 30M to Jay now so we don't lose him after 3 yrs building a winning program. Very worried about the offense and the lack of efficiency and Turnovers, unless Jake all off the sudden stops turning over the ball over this season will look like last year, missing a Bowl, with a solid defense. 3-0 is great but it was great last year.

It helps that Kansas State is at home at night, and that we've faced 3 dual threat QBs leading up to it. Avery Johnson hasn't thrown 200 yards in a game yet this season, and I don't think he's going to beat us through the air. And outside of UT Martin, their offense in the other 2 games were under 400 total yards. I believe in Jay Hill to dial something up to keep him contained and it's going to be another defensive showdown like the SMU game. The defense has looked great this year. Last year they passed the eye test, but statistically weren't good. We'll see how they fair against conference opponents. If our defense continues to dominate, I fear we will lose Jay Hill. If I had to choose between Kalani, and Hill, I'd choose Hill at this point. Hopefully we can hang onto both, but Hill will need a big raise.
On the QB, last year an Oklahoma podcast put it perfectly after the game. They said he'll make some throws that makes you think he's the best QB in the nation, then turn around and make a throw that makes you scratch your head and wonder how he's a D1 starter. He has an arm and can make some great throws, but it's the inconsistency and turnovers that are holding him back.

The Retzlaf concern is justified, I think. The receivers reaction to Jake is telling. Retzlaf is definitely a gamer... But if you take out the FCS game and this game, what is an honest and fair evaluation of Retzlaf? Happy to be 3-0. I think a change at QB is inevitable. That means some of us feel like if Retzlaf is going to struggle against better competition... Then why not see what you have to work with when the stakes are lower? The QB room must be really depleted... Or the coaches are duped. Retzlaf kinda reminds me of a combination of Lance Pendleton and Charlie Peterson. The ceiling is probably known and limited.

Also, the 100 yard kick return was fantastic, but that is rare and you can't count on that adding to the score, so without that we won by 13, that isn't that comfortable against a very bad team!
Yes Haunga! Miles Davis is too small between the tackles! Bad decision, Arod. Something else we have seen before from Arod, Confusion about formations and plays, snaps late in the play clock. If the plays are in quickly and everyone is on the same page, the defense is unsure about when the snap is coming. When the offense isn't even set until 5 seconds on the play clock, defense can better time their start across the LOC. I think this is a large reason for the lack of 3rd down conversions!!

Us BYU fans are incredibly toxic, petty and entitled this year, it’s pretty disappointing. Couch coaches gone wild. Jake made the same damn throw on the run in traffic to Hill that Gerry made at the end of the game in a meaningless situation.
The benefits of Jake being successful far outweigh defaulting to Gerry. Gerry is a rental. 1 and done back to scratch next year, no growth no continuity. That is why Jake has such a long leash, because the coaches also have to win next year, they also have to go on recruiting trips and those are much more successful when the program has growth and continuity…. Imagine the pitch to any player saying yeah we plan on picking up graduate senior qbs each year.
Lassiter needs to pull his head out of his ass, fix the body language and run his routes. SMU and Wyoming both overplayed and took away the deep pass and was giving up the short game. Deal with it, Jake missed you a couple times show some professionalism.
Lots of freshman and sophomore’s playing well on both sides of the ball. This years class is playing phenomenal especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Nice to have a kicker that can hit from 50 plus didn’t have that in the Wilson and Hall years.
Jake’s pocket navigation is fantastic, made the Oline look better than they actually were. Touchdown pass to Lassiter is exhibit A.
The interception was completely under thrown by Jake and one of his signature critical mistakes, but it was also a 1-1 matchup and Epps needed to make better play on the ball.
Any analysis of Bohanans minutes is asinine. Garbage time.

If you think Epps need to make a better play on the ball then you're insane. That was an under thrown ball that put Epps OUT of the play. Don't try to tear down Epps to make Jake look better. He under threw the ball which he doesn't often...
And Lassiter needs to fix it attitude? Absolutely not. They are allowed to be frustrated with their QB when he has bad play. But he also came out and spoke out against what you're saying. Again, 2nd WR you try to drag to defend Jake.
BYU fans are not acting entitled, most would agree we are a 4-6 win team with Retz at QB. What most fans are seeing is that his QB play at times is turnover heavy and missed opportunities, like the time he missed roberts and hill for 4th down conversion and 3rd down conversion. Jake at his peak is great, but when he is not as his peak, its bad. Fans want consistency. He has yet to play a perfect game where his decision making has not been questions. Thats 7 games going back to last year. Like the podcast says, he is what he is at this point.
Bohanon is an unknown QB who people want to see. You don't bring him in without knowing he is still talented.
Retz struggles in Big12 play - there will be a switch.

Great position to be in when we are nitpicking a blowout win. Jake started off shaky, but settled in and took care of the ball. I remember when Zach got destroyed by fans right up until the moment he destroyed the college football landscape. I've seen enough to give him some space.

Don't look now, but BYU has beaten the spread in all 3 games by at least 2 scores. I'm cautiously optimistic...
