    The most concerning thing about Jake is that all of his misses put the ball in harm's way. His misses are not because he is purposefully getting rid of the ball because no one is open. His misses are turnover throws.

    Meh. I was pretty high on Retzlaff after last year. He played the toughest part of our schedule and brought life to the offense. On Saturday he made some awful throws, 3 of which should have been picks. At least he didn't have any brain dead plays like the attempt to throw it away against SMU. If he plays well against K State, I'll eat my words. I'm just not seeing it yet. The difference this year is not better play by Retzlaff, it's better defense.

      This is a gold star comment! I find the dialogue about BYU fans overreacting to be funny, given that Lassiter himself had had enough. The truth is, had any of those near picks been picked off he would have been benched. I want Jake to succeed. I just don't think the evidence supports that's likely. I hope I'm proven wrong!

      Jake from locked on cougars it's understandable why there's rhetoric out there about Jake Retzlaff because he hasn't beaten a good team yet even SMU was a W because of the DEFENSE. QB 1 right now still reminds me of a JUCO guy. That's the level he's played, in the last three games. Wyoming stinks and he scored 20 something points on em.However, if he can win at home with that BYU D and crowd against K State this weekend. I'll give him a nod. He's still unproven I don't care about the stats. Go Cougs! 🤙🏼

    Wyoming is a terrible defense and Retzlaff threw them what should have been 4 interceptions, not just the 1 they caught. PFF doesn't include dropped interceptions in their rating.
    Had they not dropped a couple of those, you'd be singing a different tune this morning about his performance, even though the only difference would be Wyoming's not dropping them.

    Ok Jake. Come back to reality. Jake looked good vs an FCS opponent and one of the worst teams in FBS. Wyoming lost to freakin' IDAHO. ASU put up 48 on Wyoming. Our offense scored 27. Not spectacular. And the one defense he faced that is decent? He looked bad. He didn't "lead BYU to victory". The defense beat SMU.
    Having said that, this week will answer a lot of questions for all of us. As a BYU fan, I'd love for Jake to look great in a win over KSU. But from what I've seen of Jake vs good defenses, I'm just not confident that's going to happen.

    Retzloff has generally played okay. But let's remember he had a good game against Wyoming. It's not as if he is somehow absolutely proven himself because he played a good game against Wyoming? Let's be real, Wyoming is not very good! In fact the only good team he has a win against his SMU and obviously that was a questionable outing. Until I see something out of him when he plays in the Big 12 conference none of these first three wins really mean much except for SMU.

  • @TheWoodHaven
    @TheWoodHaven 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    I don't know what game you guys are watching. BYU's recievers bailed him out on numerous occasions and there were too many throws into the turf right in front of wide open recievers. If Wyoming was Kansas State, Retzlaff would have thrown 3 picks. I'm capping it at 3 because I'm assuming he would get benched after the third. Unless he has a complete 180 before the Kansas State game, he will not finish that game. Probably will not finish the first half. I want to be wrong, but I'm not. Too many BYU fans need to take off their blue colored glasses. I don't care what Pro Football Focus said. They are just looking at his numbers (which were nice to be sure) but they are not watching the game. Quite frankly, I can't believe you watched the game back and still think that was an elite performance. Retzlaff has some running ability and he is durable, but in the words of Drake, they invented the forward pass in 1906. He makes bad decisions, chooses the wrong reciever, then makes a poor delivery that are sometimes caught by elite recievers. Unless something changes, Jake will not finish this week's game.

Now, if he goes out and plays well the next 3-4 weeks and the Cougs put up enough points to get 2 wins I'll gladly eat my words. But based on his okay performances against two bad teams I certainly wouldn't say he's providing anyone wrong.

    Jake, Retzlaff would have had not one, not two, but three INTs if Wyoming defenders could hold onto the ball. It's strange to me that you try to give him so much credit for beating bad teams. Hatch you have it wrong! It's not about Jake Retzlaff's performance that makes me uneasy about this BYU team. It's about the offensive coordinator and more importantly the offensive line that has me concerned. They do not have an offensive strategy which tells me he does not have enough offensive playbook to attack the defense. Poor recruiting for running backs this past season. This week sauce offense is going to get their butts kicked as they move forward. The offensive coordinator is clueless and you see it in his plays. BYU has great players and even really good offensive line men! They are poorly coached and have been for a few years. For example how can Suamataia start for KC this year coming from BYU's terrible offensive line that was pick-apart last year?

    • @CBT1968
      @CBT1968 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Our RB room is a big problem. It puts more pressure on the QB to make plays and Jake has. Until we can run the ball better, we have to live with Jake's play. And our RBs right now are issue #1. Ignoring that is pure fan blindness.

    • @user-jr7xk9su5n
      @user-jr7xk9su5n 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@CBT1968 These aren’t Jake’s plays; they’re Aaron Roderick’s. Jake is just the quarterback running the plays Aaron calls.
      We all know the running backs the past few years are weak, and Aaron has made that loud and clear. He’s stuck in the past, trying to find another Allgeier, and might still be using Jeff Grimes’ old playbook.
      The old, boring strategy of "establish the run, then pass the ball, blah, blah, blah” is a bad typical approach! Opponents see this coming a mile away. BYU needs to re-learn how to design an offense to counter the defense you’re facing and use the talents of your players to your advantage.
      Coaching of the offensive line has showed improvement, but when you have the QB running around avoiding Wyoming's rush, tells me they're not in sync.

  • @stevecarlile2488
    @stevecarlile2488 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    You’re giving Retzlaff way too much credit for the wins. He looked great in Week 1 and deserves praise, but he regressed to his P4 opponent mean in Week 2. The defense won that game despite Jake’s turnovers. Week 3 was solid, but could’ve been much worse with nearly three more interceptions-and his third-down accuracy was a big issue. Now, with nine straight P4 opponents coming up, time will tell.
    Here’s what we know so far: against P4 talent, Retzlaff's a turnover machine (five data points on this now). Against FCS or low-end G5 teams, he’s above average to good. I’m genuinely hoping for the best moving forward, as I’m not a hater-or a truther ;-). I’m honestly stunned this coaching staff hasn’t designed a package for Bohanon to get a real sense of what he can do, especially since he’s been out for nearly two seasons. Right now, it feels like they’re doing a high-wire act, putting all the eggs in the Retzlaff basket with an unknown backup coming off major surgery in a new program. I'm aligning myself with Austin Collie who has been calling for a GBo package for a few weeks now to get some in-game reps.

    Yeah that 100th 'thumbs up' was me Jake. I like how many comments there are below. Most are far more close to 'REALITY' than you seem to be. Jake, you saw how pissed off Lassiter was right? You saw the SNUB in the endzone right? Lassiter like Roberts is a 1000 yard Receiver and he literally got jack crap from Retzlaff. I saw someone below dole out the score for the ASU vs Wyoming game. BYU got just under HALF what ASU scored. I want to see Retzlaff do well against KState but I don't expect it. Why? Because Retzlaff when pressured loses his mind. SMU's little bit of Pressure completely wigged him out. There was a comment below about how Kalani talks tough but doesn't hold anyone accountable. My prediction? They'll end up using Bohanon and Bohanon will be in the same position as Retzlaff was last year. Bohanon hasn't gotten the Reps to step in an be effective and then ARod and Kalani will point to it and say, 'See? We told you Retzlaff was better!' and anyone who knows a football from a hole in the ground will know they're FULL of CRAP... But hey.... GO RETZLAFF! AROD has bet his job on the kid. Kalani hopefully will have his Job scrutinized for letting ARod do it this way if things implode. And last thought? Saw this below as well. 3 wins out of the 9 left? That's 6 losses that are gonna be tough to swallow. BYU has the horses to compete. It only has half the Coaches.

Especially having not played for two seasons, after major shoulder reconstruction, and in a new program. Some players are gamers and others are practice players. Why not give him a designed package to get some live game reps? This could be done in a way to not "split reps" and still find out what you have in Bohanon so you understand how long the leash should be on Retzlaff. Right now, this staff if flying partially blind and I hope it doesn't come back to bite them.

    LMAO.... I was hoping we'd see some titles like this on Videos after beating a really bad team like Wyoming. Even better that its on the Jakes a Jake Homer page... What I said after the SIU game was that Retz can't throw the long ball. He rares back and chucks it and then starts praying. Having receivers like Robert's and Lassiter making it a 50/50 proposition and the Only Reason he has any of his 'prayers answered'... if Wyoming was a B12 foe? It would have been 3 INT'S and we would still be on the there are 'No Consequences' with Kalani as HC train. Lassiters reactions to Retz poor throws and even after the TD by snubbing him says it all. Lassiter is every bit as good as Robert's and the only thing holding him back is Retz. Keep gloating Hatch... you are one of the crew that thinks winning 3 games out of the next 9 should be deemed 'successful and competitive'... if the BIG ONE Realignment into 2 Super Leagues happens while BYU is striving for 3 Conference wins, calling that successful, we are going to be hanging out with Wyoming permanently. But, hey...we'll like our HC. If BYU beats KState? I'll start feeling better about things. KState is beatable. But not if Retz tries to 'pray" during the game....

    Jake’s isn’t that good. If he doesn’t improve significantly this will be a disappointing season. Even if he improves we are foolish if we don’t have the backup QB play more. As we need to be prepared for injuries when they come. We will see if Jake is as good as you say after the next two games. To win those games every part of the game has to get much better.

    Retzlaff still sucks (wait til Kansas State game is over)
    Why are you puffing up our boys after beating a terrible 0-2 Wyoming team?
    Take the blue goggles off bro before you do your podcast

    One pick? At best it should be 2 Interceptions. At worst 3. His decision making is still bad.

    Retzlaff will win some and lose some. It looks like Retzlaff is trying to put the ball into too many tight coverages. The receivers are some of the best, but he needs the support of a running game that BYU just struggles to produce. I believe 7-5 or 8-4 is not out of the range of possibilities.

    BYU fans on social media were absolutely wearing their clown jerseys on Saturday with regard to Jake Retzlaff. If social media were around in the 80s, the same fans would have been calling for McMahon, Young and Bosco to be benched; a completely emotionally biased, irrational clown show.

      There is some truth to this. However, the fan base is working off of a pretty decent baseline. The argument that we need to give Jake more time this season is fair. That being said, Jake has shown well against basically two FCS opponents. He was bad against SMU. So I think it's fair for fans to be concerned about being overly committed to Jake. I hope he does well. I hope he proves me wrong.

      @@JeffMulitalo concerned, yes, but this isn't only what's being represented online. No NCAA football coach in his right mind would EVER do what many online fans seem to be demanding - bench a winning and overall well performing QB. In addition, these fans are seeing ghosts, including near INTs (that disqualify Retzlaff from playing against future opponents). The "grass is greener" syndrome is strong with BYU fans (online) and it's causing them to see a completely different game.

      @@lukeskywalker7461this is exactly right! Before the season started if you took a poll of byu fans and told them we would go 3-0 with Retzlaff current stats I bet you at least 90% would take it. I don’t think Retzlaff is the best qb in the big 12 but I do believe he has outperformed expectations thus far.

    Jake is high risk high reward much funner to watch than consistently mediocre QBs who are a dime a dozen. Some QBs rarely even attempt to make big plays. Jake made 8 big plays according to a stat. Jakes QB mind is excellent! Unfortunately ksu has a charismatic qb too and a good defense, ie beat down of u of Arizona. Something's gotta give!

    People are just loving to hate in Retzlaff. People wanting Gerry acting like they see practice and have seen him play recently. Obviously there is something going on at practice that we are not seeing. Even media availability is limited. Just let it play out and make the change when absolutley necessary.

      You act as if there haven't been recent examples of QB's sitting behind starters that we all wondered woulda, coulda, shoulda when they finally got their chance. Baylor Romney, Christian Stewart, and James Lark just to name a few.

      @@stevecarlile2488 thing is Gerry has.had multiple chances at multiple programs. I'm not saying he's bad or anything, but again, it's not our choice. I trust the coaches to make the right choice. If Gerry gets put in as the starter, then fine.

    Jake 2024 is better than Jake 2023 by a good margin. But I do still worry about his ball security and 3rd down performance. He still needs to improve both, but his big play ability is a strength we have to recognize.
