I still think the Japanese Arisaka 99 bayonet was superb. It handles a lot like a machete, with a heavy spine and a very sharp 18-inch blade. It's a very well-made piece of steel.

The British copied the Type 30 when designing the P07, seen in this vid as a repro on the SMLE. As for sharpness of the Type 30, point of fact, (pun intended), it should only have about 8" of LIGHTLY sharpened edge on the true edge. If it's exceedingly sharp, and/or sharpened all the way along its length, it was done by someone post-issue and the value is vastly decreased.

The bayonet has it's uses. Other than sticking people with it, it tells you "you are going into combat, and Combat is brutal, you never know what will happen ". It also gives you confidence. Why? Because your Country has prepared you for everything, even the possibility of hand to hand Combat. If you are prepared for that, you will be ready for anything. Scared, yes. Anyone who isn't afraid of Cold Steel piercing their flesh, is a liar and a fool.

    • @rossmum
      @rossmum 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Absolutely. Even if massed charges are largely a thing of the past, its value as a psychological weapon (bolstering for you, pant-shitting for the other bloke) is irreplaceable and it is ultimately still an option when you need it. The fact insurgents in Iraq and Taliban in Afghanistan have died at the point of a bayonet proves that much. The only thing I'd be less inclined to throw away as "useless" would be my rifle itself.

In my opinion, a modern bayonet should be a good combat knife first, serves both as a tool and as a handheld weapon well, then the function of fixing it to the end of the barrel should be only an additional bonus. The AKM bayonet was more or less the first generation of bayonets that adopted this philosophy.

This was essentially the line of thinking coming out of ww2. The British spike bayonets weren’t favoured as they were moreso another piece of material to lug around in additional to a more utilitarian knife. The US on the other hand would spend quite a bit per knife to equip marines with Kabars and Army and others with the M3 fighting knife if not equipped with the M1 Garand bayonet. The post war M4-M7 bayonets would go on to try and make a more affordable, all purpose knife for bayonet drill, fighting, and utility purposes. The Russian bayonets would design a little more for utility purposes (see saw back and wire cutter in the video). Most of the early WW1 bayonets were so long and unwieldy as they were still produced with cavalry in mind.

I think the SKS bayonet deserves an honourable mention. While it doesn't double as a combat knife, and as a standalone bayonet it doesn't belong in the top five, it's implementation on the gun is genius, in my opinion.

Go look up the microtech jagdkommando, a spiral triangular blade spike. Some Chinese factory put that blade on a bayonet handle, completed with the M7/M9 style bayonet latch and muzzle ring. Pro, It is extremely effective in making huge bleeding holes on big animals. I don't think you can get any more deadlier than that nasty blade shape. Con, it is utterly useless for any other purpose. You can hardly open an MRE with it.

In New Zealand the Lee Enfield sword bayonet was used as a pig hunting knife for many years. You basically get you dog to bail the wild boar up in a corner, then kill it with the bayonet.

Most pig hunting in NZ was done with a Lee enfeild for along time just because we had lots in surplus cause you know if you were born in NZ and male well you went to war cause that was your only way off the island at the bottom of the world. Thankfully the British empire had no shortage of wars for us to go sightseeing in and around the worlds finest trenches which were actually often dug by our legendary pioneer corps (yes the real "diggers" you australian credit theives).
      "
Anyway we just cut them down and lightened them and boom a very effective pig gun with your own pig sticker. Lee enfields from all down the ages through all Britain's wars. I have a no4 mark 1 and i love the old thing.

IIRC the pattern 1907 was modelled after the Type 30 arisaka bayonet. The british liked the design and copied it, altering it later because the hooked quillion was found to get stuck on barbed wire fast. They also added the oil hole later. If you find a real 1907 with a hooked quillion is worth quite a bit of money.

My favorite has always been the very rare nowadays American Model 1915 bolo bayonet, basically just a 15-inch-blade bolo machete with a bayonet mount and muzzle ring. They were so popular with army scouts stationed in the Philippines that when they were taken out of service the troops refused to give them up unless they were given regular bolos to replace them. My number two favorite has to be the French MAS 36 bayonet; being able to use your bayonet lug as a sheath is neat, and they look really cool when you draw and fix it in place.

Hey i just watched your bayonet video. I personally own a pre ww1 Swedish Mauser bayonet. My grandpa captured a platoon of old ww1 vets during ww2 who were guarding a bunker. They were starving and immediately surrendered. One officer traded him a bayonet that he obtained during ww1 for 2 packs of lucky strike. At some point this weapon was blued and the old bluing has turned a rich chocolate color after all these years making it a one of a kind. I'd post a picture if i could. When my grandpa gave it to me he said "this blade has killed quite a few f*@&ing nazis" two days later he shot himself in my car. Not to end on a downer but thats just part of the history of the weapon.

Considering its been since the second world war anybody has gone up against bayonet V bayonet, it really is pointless, even more so that its dangerous more to the user then anybody, and even with that singular use of bayonets in the middle east by the 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales's Regiment.....they where unable to engage anybody WITH their bayonets and it was a downright dumbass thing to do.
Do you know what you do when you are charged with bayonets in a modern military? move LMG forward, sweep left to right at hip level, if this was anybody but a insurgent force the soldiers would have been slaughtered....even back in the second world war, if you affixed your bayonet your commander was pretty much saying "I am ok with most of you dying."

    • @harryb8945
      @harryb8945 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

+Redneck Fury well the hole concept of actually charging is out dated and useless. However if you actually read my comment you would know I'm not saying that bayonets are good in that role any more. However they are still very good for such things as room clearing and places like the afghan green zone where the enemy can jump up straight in front of you. Hell if I was a British soldier with nothing more then a bolt action number 4, doing room clearing in ww2 I'd shore as hell have my pig sticker attached. And it would be the same if I was in afghan with an SA80.

I say that, because the owners were about 5 military vets from world war 2 on, who sat in the back talking all day. They had mostly antique military surplus. But these bayonets, some of which were from world war 1. were in a bucket on the floor, selling for ten to twenty dollars. Later I sold one of the ten dollar ones for $80. The best and sharpest bayonet way the Number 5 bayonet for the Number four Lee Enfield Mark 2. I served in the Irish Reserve and in the early 1980s we still used the Number 4 and the Number 5 bayonet had a scabbard with inbuilt sharpening stones on either side, so that each time you insert or withdraw the bayonet you are sharpening it and giving one hell of a sharp edge and point! I remember on on occasion a fellow comrade while standing at ease putting the point of the bayonet through his tunic sleeve as we were doing a final dress rehearsal for a Presidential Guard of Honour. Luckily he didn't impale himself😂😮

The underswinging M44 Mosin Bayonet is worth a mention - as it is quick to put up or take down while being inseparable from the gun (if you have a post WW1 Mosin M98 you likely have to use a hammer to get the long cruciform spike bayonet on or off - because if it was easy to do, soldiers would take them off and loose them).
Another fun note are the examples of spike bayonets with the points twisted into hooks - some for use as a cooking tool and some, rather morbidly, for pulling bodies out from under hedges - as the wounded would often crawl under them and die. Not really a bayonet, but an example of the "fine respect" that soldiers tend to offer their gear.

Feel like the Arisaka Bayonet should have a place on this list. Where the Gewher 98 was vilified during the first world war, the Japanese was for the second. Had to be horrifying to be on the receiving end of banzai charges on Iwo Jima And Okinawa

I have a US kukri style bayonet made for WW1- I found pics of it online - apparently it was for clearing brush in front of your mg and artie but the one I bought at a roadside flea market has strange markings
the scabbard is khaki brown and looks like it has been in some kind of liquid - I don't want to say 'blood' but it appears to be. There is a hand made handle on it and there are 5 notches on it.

The K31 bayonet really is a work of art and a great investment. Glad I bought a bunch when they were cheaper. The SIG decendent of it is alright, but just doesnt have the same appeal. Another interesting one - however efficient it was - is the 1938 folding Carcano bayonet.

The Butcher blade originally came with a serrated or saw back and it was called a butcher bayonet simply because it looked like a butcher knife. The reason it was so large is because it was one of the first dual purpose bayonets. It was also a pioneer tool that was to be used to saw wood. The main complaint from the British and French was not the size of the bayonet but the saw back on it.

A good budget option to the bulgarian 6 kh 4 are the east german and yugoslavian copies. Although they aren't made of orange AG4 resin and reinforced with fiberglass, it has a nice black tactical look and right around the ballpark of $50-$80 instead of rus or bulgarian ones that cost $150 or more even. I think I've seen some (true russian/bulgarian ones) go as high as $200 or even $300

1The enfield bayonet was so long because the rifle was so short. An enfield and sword bayonet is a similar length to a WW1 era Mauser 98 and its bayonet.

Australian Light Horse when they charged down the Turks at Beersheba only had their 1907 design bayonets. Although they charged machine guns and Artillery they had very light casualties considering they distance of the charge and the number of entrenched enemy. The bayonet took many prisoners that day. Last hand to hand fighting with bayonets was in Korea.

They had a similar effect in Crete during WWII, when a bunch of Aussies and Kiwis gave 280 odd German mountain troops the old cold steel for the loss of only 24 of their own. The survivors literally dropped kit and ran a mile. 'Obsolete' my foot, I'd be more scared of someone pointing a bayonet at me than someone pointing a rifle in my general direction. Bullets are to whom it may concern, but a bayonet isn't. They're not liable to miss.

I have a modest collection of bayonets. They are interesting. The most interesting (and the oldest) is a Krag bayonet dated 1900. Just the thing to go mith my M1898 rifle. US bayonets starting in WW2 are all of a type, with very similar blades. The only diff is the handles and mounting systems for the various firearms. The added benefit is that most of them can use the same scabbard (M8, which comes in both steel and fiberglass). The long Garand bayonets were reduced to the common length of about 6.5" by Korean era, and are known as the M5. Coincidentally, the M14 bayo is the M6 and the first gen M16 bayo is the M7 (go figure). The WW2 trench knife was the M3, and the carbine bayonet (M4) had a similar blade shape. This is probably where the nomenclature started.

The French M1842 yataghan bayonet is very aesthetically pleasing and considerably longer than any on this list. Its main drawback unfortunately is the slippery all-brass handle that makes it impractical to use when detached from the rifle. Still cool though and would go on my list.

I noticed in the start that you also had a Swedish m/1896 (Swedish mauser) bayonet in your collection =).
(for those who dont know it its the all metal bayonet in the middle of the screen at 0:50
I have a few myself and while it might not be the prettiest of bayonets they are pretty nice.
And i also like the design of it since its very rugged (being all metal) and i find it interesting that the Swedes went to the short type of bayonet right away (in the 1890s) where as most of the major nations used longer bayonets during ww1 and then went to shorter designs before ww2.

As far as full length bayonets go, the russian Mosin Nagant cruciform bayonet is by far the strongest, simplest and most effective bayonet out there. It makes the French bayonets look like twigs that'll snap on first stab. Plus, it doubles as a screwdriver in a pinch.
