One of the most underrated bands in history! Marooned and Shark Attack great dancing songs. And sooooo many others that hit me hard over the years with their later albums...
Tim Finn was one of the most underrated singer-songwriters of all time in Australia.........His songs in Split Enz were amazing and were a part of the success of TRUE COLOURS!!
Underrated by whom? He has received and been nominated for numerous songwriting awards spanning decades in both Australia and NZ. He was even made an Officer of the Order of British Empire for his musical contributions.
The Beatles of the Southern Hemisphere. Even Paul McCartney acknowledged this in a round about way with his kudos and admiration for the Finn Brothers.
I always thought of them more as New Zealand's answer to Devo. Both Split Enz and Devo formed at around the same time (1972/3), and had a similar kind of hyper-ironic post-psychedlic anti-hippie stance. Theatrical, intellectual, and just plain odd, their early music was anti-pop and super creative, super original.
I always imagine Split Enz as the NZ version of (The Mystic Knights of) Oingo Boingo XD Bizarre performance art troupes turned highly underrated alt rock bands. Heck, both formed in '72! Crazy stuff.
Best concert l ever went to was at Dallas Brooks Hall in Melbourne..was a farewell tour, think the band was going overseas for the first time..England if l remember correctly.. l was about 17.. a friend had taken me to the Sundowner Hotel near Geelong to see them months before..had never heard of them.... it certainly was a experience l have never forgotten.. 50 years later..
I'll never understood why these guys didn't blow up internationally... they killed it here in NZ and AUD... maybe because they didn't go over with this stuff?
I’m from the US and came to the party late, finding them while tracing backwards from Crowded House. They had a few hits (I Got You) but I slowly discovered their large catalog of greatness, and now I tell as many people as I can.
They were pulled from BBC 1 I think on the threshold of making Number One in the UK with 6 mths in a Leaky Boat, as the British troops were about to leave on ships for the Falklands War. Unfortunately Exocets made some of the ships leaky, killing and burning quite a few, not Split Enz. Thatcher v Galtieri era.
@@docsavage8640 Yeah, you're likely right. I was doing some reading, it seems they did a large tour of the US, but they never really took off there until much later and by then, they were Crowded House.
I've seen other photographs of these guys and this pre-Crowded House version of the band looks sometimes like it's a mix between 1920's bands like Jack Smith, Guy Lombardo, then The Cure and Kaus Nomi ... to me ! 😅 But their iconic sound can already be recognised at this level 🤩👌🎶
This is split enz, not a pre crowded house version of the band. Two different bands with the Finn brothers influence in both. And they are BOTH great bands!
@@snakewhitcher4189 it's just the song is beyond horrible, it literally makes me angry hearing it and their stupid facial expressions make me seeth with rage.
Absurdo Mundo they called their "outfit" if I recall correctly.....anyway, still playing their albums these days....and win souls....not everything is lost...😅
Drummer is Mal Green, who left Split Enz in 1981. He had a fairly low-profile career in the Australian music industry, and recently returned to England.
It was Simon Wright who took over drums in AC/DC when Phil Rudd left in 1983, not Mal Green. Malcolm Green (born 25 January 1953 in the UK) was in Split Enz from 1976 to 1981, replacing Emlyn Crowther in London in 1976. He had formerly played with Love Affair, The Honeycombs, and Octopus, and was joined in Split Enz by Octopus bassist Nigel Griggs, who replaced Mike Chunn. Green was sacked from Split Enz in 1981 after arguments with Tim Finn about songwriting contributions, releasing a solo single, "Follow Me" late that year th-cam.com/video/vK9AYZd3JQc/w-d-xo.html He then moved from NZ to Sydney, where he set up a home studio producing bands and also drummed for Sydney band Gethsemane. In 2005, he played with Split Enz at its induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in Australia, and in 2006 he rejoined the band for its Australian reunion tour (sharing drumming duties with Noel Crombie). But Green did not take part in Split Enz's reunion tour of New Zealand in 2008. In 2014 Green returned to the UK to nuse his elderly father.
Borderline?! I think they were going for full “absurdist”. It’s as though Monty Python did an old timey music hall number and then got the Thunderbirds to animate it with puppets. 😂
The facial expressions and mannerisms of all these guys are hilariously brilliant. Still enjoying this 46 years after its release.
Especially mals
Me too
I loved this when I was in primary school and love it still at 53. Thank you Split Enz.
Good old 53 ayy.
Im also 53 good memories

True Colours, a fantastic album...also to pick out one of Tim Finns many solo albums "Big Canoe" a masterpiece......
Don't forget the Finn brothers were from Te Awamutu in New Zealand, Australia adopted him.

@@davidrathbone4029Far superior to Devo.
@@davidrathbone4029 I love Devo as much as I love Split Enz. Devo were theatrical, but they were considered the progenitors of "nerd rock".
Split Enzs are a uniquely Australian/New Zealand band...... like no one else in the whole word .
I love the old-timey feel of the early Split Enz recordings. They remind me of the 1920's for some strange reason.
yessss
They were influenced by late 1920s-early 1930s Weimar Berlin.
*THIS* has a real Beatles vibe about it. Like Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Yep agree
Imagine if Klaus Nomi, Oingo Boingo and Split Enz performed together. Dream collab.

Those discordant chords are brilliant
Oy steady on there mate.
A classic Split Enz song x

The 2 finns were brilliant brothers in a great band.
If Kramer from Seinfeld started a band, it would probably go a lot like this.
Now that you've said that I can't "unthink" of Kramer. It fits too well!
Maybe less racist
@@darricshhh These are New Zealand people. They're probably pretty racist.

They weren't especially good compared to what we already had and didn't tour enough regions to become known. Simple.

this song...and the visuals...a classic...really....
When I saw this on countdown I ran behind the couch because it frightened me..(1977)
How old were you at the time? I hope not something like 35...
I was the same at 8 years old but loved the song. They were a brilliant band.
So glad I got to see these guys live in Sydney about 20 years ago
Split enz incredible talent..the guy on the recorder..all great musos

This is such a good track, another fantastic band I wish we could claim ;)
I still giggle when I think of them performing this in Sydney, as Tim flubbed the words and pointed to himself singing, “That was MY mistake”
Tim and Neil would definitely both be the best Australian/NZ songwriters and singers without a doubt ❤
I so loved Tim Finn....
Yep, such a great tune . Great film clip, 1980's film clip ,
1977
Full on FUN!!
The band Avatar owe these gentlemen a nod of respect.
It is brilliant video. The spider web, everybody dress in black and Neil with the white shoes.
The woman’s shadow walking with them.
For a great musical band they were great comedians too...Frizzy as...Split Enz.
Such fun!
Bit of fluff on the needle lol love it
Great song Sounds like (let my father stay .)always thought song called let my father stay
As a teenager in the 80s this song talked to me .
I can hear The Kinks influence in this song, I know Tim Finn was a big fan of Ray Davies' songwriting.
Bass guitar rocks ,m8 very intricate. Almost 'Beatles like. (,,
The introvert type in yellow has been haunting me for the last 45 years.
Noel Crombie?
@@mjames4709 never bothered to look up his name really. But a performing genius!

Way ahead of there Time

Fellow New Zealanders from the "McGIllicutty Serious Party" obviously...What's with the steam organ?
