It might be that I'm old enough now - I always liked Split Enz, but now I have a much greater appreciation for how original and brilliant they were.

One of the greatest Bands on Earth, the early albums are just so beautifully original...still are.

it is utterly astounding how good the "Mental Notes" album is. its lightning in a bottle. and the sad thing is, you can play it to most people and they simply don't get it. they get "I got you" because its simple 4/4 rock. but songs like "Titus", "Under The Wheel", "Spellbound" and "Stranger Than Fiction" are works of art. that 3 year period of Finn / Judd magic, is just that.

I was first introduced to Titus,
      Late Last Night,
      Matinee Idyll,
      Lovey Dovey,
      and Time for a Change,
on a Chrysalis Best of collection from the mid-90s.
That made me want more of the early Enz.
Spellbound on Mental Notes is such an epic.
Sweet Dreams was one so good that the Crowdies covered it many times.
      Dizrhytmia is a classic album.

@@jasonlefler3456 I think I had that compilation. The earlier stuff was unlistenable to me at first, but after about 4 years it all made sense.

I want to thank you, sincerely, for posting this video.
I have been a fan since 1981, when I first heard them in High School. They were the first band I ever went to see. It was at a hole-in-the-wall venue called The Stone, on Broadway in San Francisco, which doesn't exist anymore. Although I've had the good fortune to see them a few times after that, it was that night in that small room where I stood a few feet from the inspired and inspiring (and perspiring) greatness of Split Enz I cherish.

They have got to be the best alternative band in the world....EVER! I just loved them from the first moment I saw them. They were just so cool and classy. Nothing like them since. Their albums, and I have them all on vinyl and cd, are spectacular and fulfilling. The vocals are inspiring and beautiful and their instruments amazing.

Great story,, great band. The best thing is they stuck to their guns and didn't sell out or change direction. Mental Notes was probably 50 years ahead of it's time and the orchestration remains unmatched by any modern act. And correct me if I'm wrong but Airlord,,Misex and Mother Goose were ALL Kiwi bands. No shortage of artistry in NZ.

No I'm not a Kiwi. Far from it. I live in Jersey and was in a progressive band here in the late 60s called Divine Toe. We were ahead of the game with our stage act and music, inspired by the Who, Roger Chapman, Doors and Cream. I loved Split Enz because of their quirkiness and their style of music and dress. We never attempted Enz music because it would have been impossible to emulate them. We tried Zappa but again way to cool and difficult to perform. I loved the final Enz live performance - full of spontaneity and musical brilliance. And those spoons, wow!

Self belief is so important and Tim , Neil and Phil and the rest of the band felt it, they had the conviction, my band never made it through, there is always room for bullshit with confidence though as it can always carry you that little bit further.

To, Time and Tide. Bestest ever.
I remember that t v show and what that dude said about the band. Who prevailed and known around the world.
Mr Phil Judd and Mr Tim Finn please release 'Long Hard Row' on cd please plus the other tracks that were released years ago together on cassette tape. Thankyou. Even Vinyl too.
I bought Ragnarok on cd a couple of years ago. Was one of the Jayett family members if I remember correctly.
