So this song is about Gustavus Adolphus the Swedish king during the era of the 30 years war.
The 30 Years war was essentially between European Catholics vs European Protestants.
It initially started as an internal war in the Holy Roman Empire (pretty much what we know as Germany plus some parts of Northern Italy and Eastern France) however it grew into one of history’s largest and most brutal and devastating wars - with men from Sweden, Poland, France, Papal States, Spain, Scotland… think a European nation and they had people there fighting one either side as mercs or as actual contenders.
Gustavus was the Kind of Sweden and on seeing the Catholic army of the King moving north during there defeat of the Protestants he intervened brining his army in to make sure that Catholic influence didn’t invade the northern Germany territories and cause threat to Sweden. He lead such a well managed campaign winning victories for the Protestants on many occasions many saw him as the saviour of Protestantism and that with his continuous victories south… that if unstopped he would actually take Rome itself… he had zero plans on doing any of that - like I said he had just kind of wanted to protect his boarders and interests in northern Germany - however he didn’t deny this propaganda from either side instead playing into it to make his enemies and allies fear and follow him.
As for how he paved the way for warfare as we know it today. The era military warfare the 30 years war takes place in is known as the Pike & Shot era.
The basics of military warfare in this era was that large regiments of men formed into massive pike blocks - think a large block of men with maybe a 50 man facing to the front and about 10 ranks deep with people all carrying massive pikes - would advance towards each other while smaller groups attached to the main regiment/apart of it would fire on the enemy pike block and it’s support units with flintlocks - think muskets but these came before and were a bit more crude and header to load and aim.
As such these shot formations would attack the enemy letting the main pike block close in with a hopefully battered enemy to deliver a short and decisive exchange of pikes.
Cavalry also played a part in scaring off shot formations and cannons and flanking exposed pike blocks tho this was also the era that started showing cavalry’s weakness as being the feared shock troops they once were more moving into the fashion of Dragoons and Hussars - mounted infantry (dragoons) / scout cavalry (hussars) who’s main duty was to primarily recon the enemy and maybe skirmish with the enemy cav or drive off more easily engaged foes.
However Gustavus changed up his way of fighting quite interestingly. Taking a liking to the Flintlocks of the era he instead had his main lines formed entirely with men armed with them and instead used his pikemen to hold the flanks to protect the gunline from cav and charges.
Seeing how effective a gunline could blast apart an enemy formation - well they didn’t cause that many actual kills however just the fact you saw a few dozen guys wiped by these lines even volley plus the massive plumes of smoke each shot and the horrendous rippling BANG each time and the fact most armour - which while plate most didn’t wear much of like old medieval knights instead mostly a chest plate, maybe some arm and leg grieves and helmet - didn’t hold up as you got closer in… yeah most formations broke before they even made the front lines and those who did get close quickly found said gunline replaced with a reserve pike line to meet them.
As such many on seeing how well this tactic worked began to adopt it and so began the fall of the pike and the mass manufacture of guns - plus it was much easier to equip and train a man to load and fire a flintlock vs carry a pike and use it and hope he actually gets close enough to do so or is willing enough to do so when they get close vs do what most pike formations did during the era and just slap each others pike tips around against eachother until one side gave up.
- some interesting notes we also have on his tactics was as he began to use this gunline more he even made some minor adaptations like having multiple ranks not firing together but one after the other allowing for a more consistent stream of fire as well as having multiple lines but only two firing lines, the two that sat behind both were men who were given a flintlock but weren’t to shoot but instead hand it to the man infront and take there used one and load it. Again a way to increase the fire rate and use more skilled gunners to shoot.
That's incredibly insane to be able to institute a new way of using other weapons and changing up tactics (like not shooting all at once to keep the gunfire constant) on a new type of warfare. Holy smokes! Thanks for that insight, unbelievable I wasn't taught this in school. Creators of new warfare should be well known and also praised for their revolutionary thinking!!

The language is latin, what they spoke back in ancient Rome, but no, it's not close to swedish. And yes, he did invent some new stuff, if you google "Father of modern warfare" you will be pointed to Gustavus Adolphus (the latin name of Gustav II Adolf). And the eagle is sort of Rome, not the actual Rome, but "The holy Roman empire" which in fact was a bunch of central European states joining together pretending to be a successor to Rome. And the war was between catholics and protestants, the catholics was winning, conquering states in todays northern Germany, until Gustavus/Sweden came in and liberated the north, pushing the catholics back.
I can't believe I forgot about Latin 🤦 and thanks! I googled him and found out he used more firearms rather than pikes and such 🤯 Truly should be a household name!!

Love your reaction! Sabaton is very chill when it comes to people reacting on their songs so don´t worry about that. If you want to continue with songs about old swedish kings I would suggest Sabaton - Carolus Rex (english lyric video).
If you want newer songs then i would go for "Race to the sea" or "Soldier of heaven".

Here in Finland we do celebrate his death day as Finnish Swedish Heritage Day
which is celebrated in Finland on 6 November. The day celebrates the Swedish-speaking population of Finland, their culture, and the bilinguality of Finland.
As we were part of Swedish empire 100's of years.
That is so cool, embracing the bilinguality, culture, just plain acceptance of different people. Who would've thought that would be a tough concept to grasp. At least in my own country :/ cheers!

This war was largely fought in and over the German lands. Germany was not a single country but a patchwork of states. There were three groups: the Catholics, the Lutherans and the Calvinists.
Gustav II Adolph, the King of Sweden 1611 - 1632, was posthumously given the title “Gustavus Adolphus Magnus“
Gustavus Adolphus the Great.
He was Lutheran and seen as a champion of the Lutheran side.
The Thirty Years War effectively ended the “Wars of Religion“ period in European history and we moved into the modern period.
The lingua franca of the European educated elite of the seventeenth century was Latin. Everyone who ruled a country or was a senior advisor to a ruler was expected to use Latin - mostly for written communication.

So this song is about Gustav II Adolf also known as Gustavus Adolphus, when he entered the 30 years war, which essentially was about Protestantism vs Catholicism. Gustavus Adolphus and Sweden during this time was protestant, and was mostly warring in Germany(then the Holy Roman Empire) to try and safeguard Sweden from the Catholic threat. You should react to Sabaton History (which also does not care about reaction videos) if you want to know more, the videos are usually of the same name as the songs.
Also you should react to Sabatons song Carolus Rex which is also about a Swedish king about 100 years after this.

English and Swedish are both in the Germanic language group.
Latin, French, Spanish, Italian are a few of the Romance language group.
This is after rome´s fall and the pope+catholic capital was in germany, so Germany is the eagle and Sweden the Lion from north
The Swedish language builds of the German language and the German-Roman Empire.
The thing that Gustavus Adolphus "paved the way we still walk today" is the conscription system. As you probably know, it's a thing all over the world today, he reformed the Swedish army into using it back then and thus having more reliable/loyal soldiers that isn't just fighting for money but instead fighting for their own country.
Also, sweden has never been conquered, by rome or another nation. Denmark came closest during the kalmar union but that was because of a pretty messy inheritance between the monarchies. But we have never been conquered.

It's definitly one of those that should have more attention because that's kind of a big deal. He also revolutionized warfare as some others said in the comments.
