Livgardet was created by Gustav Vasa when he traveled further north to get support from the men of the dales. He did this to throw out the Danish from the country, and break the kalmar union, making swedish fully independent once again. Gustav Vasa was the founder of modern sweden and is also the grandfather of Gustavus Adolphus (Gustav II Adolf). All of this took place almost exactly 500 years ago now, in 1521.

The choir melody from the song bears resemblance to a Christian hymn "Fairest Lord Jesus", also known as "Beautiful Savior". In Sweden, the same melody is also used in Psalm 297 ("Härlig är jorden" ("Lovely is the Earth").) (I had to copypaste this coz I didnt know the english word of the hymn. But there you go.)
Love this song and happy that you listened to them :)
P.S. "I Frid och I Strid" means "In Peace and in Battle" (was corrected in response, thx!)
And for the next Swedish part:
    "For Sweden through Time,
    Whereever the King goes,
    They do what seems impossible,
    whatever the future foretold"

    • @FamousGirlfriend
      @FamousGirlfriend 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

No, not "freedom". Nowadays, "frid" usually means "calm", but I'm pretty sure that, in this context, "frid" should be translated to the more archaic Swedish word for "peace", as in "in peace(-time)". So it's a somewhat archaic way to say "in times of peace and in times of battle".
"För Sverige - i tiden" is the credo of the current King; "For Sweden - through the ages" in English.
"De gör(a) vad som synes omöjligt" is the credo of The Royal Guard; "They do what seems to be impossible", basically.
(I'm sorry for correcting you like this, I just want to make sure the translation is accurate!)

The song itself talks about the history of Livgardet, the March across the Belts and Battle of Narva were specific events the royal guard took part in
As i don't think this is mentioned in the history videos:
The music video itself shows the Skirmish at Bender which is not mentioned in the song
After Carolus Rex was defeated at Poltava he sought refuge in the Ottoman Empire for few years before his increasing demands were enough for the Sultan who then promptly sent a force of around 10k soldiers to the king's residence at Bender, Carolus Rex together with around 40 swedish soldiers held out for around 7 hours taking down up to 300 Turks before being forced out of the residence due to a fire that was set by the Ottoman fire arrows which led to his surrender.

So glad to see you again! Hope you're doing well, despite that crazy work schedule you told us about.
4:13 yep, it was written to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the royal guard, and was originally a collaboration with the real royal guard. However, our department of defense worried it would lead to diplomatic issues due to Sabaton having played a concert for Putin affiliated people, and forbade it from being officially sanctioned by the guard. :/
    Quoted from Sabaton's wiki:
"Sabaton had planned a cooperation with the Swedish Armed Forces for the 500th anniversary of the Swedish Royal Guard (the Guard even issued a official request to the band about the cooperation), but it was stopped due to political pressure put on the Swedish Guard and the Swedish Armed Forces.
What was problematic for the politicians, was the fact that Sabaton played a concert on the Crimean Peninsula in 2015 which was organized by a motorcycle gang "Night Wolves" closely affiliated with the Russian president Vladimir Putin, according to a statement issued by the Swedish Armed Forces, "politics and music are connected when it comes to that type of gig"."

    • @cloudedreactions2578

I¨m not sure they still teach this in the history classes, but not long ago all children learnt about the great marsch across the Belt. We were at war with Denmark then, I think. It was one of the greatest moments in Swedish history.

    • @cloudedreactions2578
      @cloudedreactions2578  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, someone recalled the event as being the "most badass event in Swedish history" lol

  • @melkor3496

They sang about the March across the belt which is an event that happen during the second northern war 1658 (before the great northern war) when Sweden was fighting the polish Lithuanian commonwealth Denmark declared war on Sweden. As a response Charles/Karl X (tenth) of Sweden moved most of his army towards Jutland and focused on taking the danish mainland. However he then needed a way to get to Copenhagen across a few islands which he couldn’t because of the size of the danish navy and the danish straits. The king waited until the ice was strong enough in winter then he marched his entire army over the sea to Copenhagen and capitulated Denmark and got a huge peace treaty that even got us Scania which is Swedish to this day. Here is some info if you want to learn. This is a legendary event in Swedish history and for me personally one of the most badass and hilarious events in Scandinavian or recent European history. 😂 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_Across_the_Belts
Now the second part “crushing blow at Narva dealt” is about a battle in the Great northern war (1700-1721) with Charles/Karl the XII (twelfth), (Carolus Rex) about a battle in Swedish Estonia during the beginning of the war. When a Russia army 30-40 thousand strong came and besieged Narva in 1700 but later that year after having dealt with Denmark Charles the twelfth turned his army against the Russian army before having gathered all his forces and that year he met the prepared dug in Russian army with his own army of around 10 thousand men and attacked it destroying a large portion of the entire 30-40 thousand strong Russian army while losing relatively few soldiers himself. Another legendary battle in Swedish military history.
Here you can read more about this battle: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Narva_(1700)
So really Sabaton is singing in both versions of this song about Swedish history and a few noteworthy battles and events.
    Hope this helped.

To add to this, the battle of Narva was fought in a blizzard. Which helped the swedes because they could get closer to their enemies and win easily due to the Swedish military was experts at close combat. According to swedish reports, we lost some 500 men.

    The Belts (in English)
    in Danish Bælterne
    or Swedish Bälten
are the straits that separate the various islands
and peninsular that make up Denmark.
They are more commonly called the Danish Straits
The two that I think of immediately are:
Storebælt (Great Belt) between Zealand (where Copenhagen is)
and Funen (where Hans Christian Andersen came from)
    and
Lillebælt (Little Belt) between Funen and Jutland
(the peninsula connected to mainland Europe.
They were a major obstacle until the nineteenth century
when railway bridges were built and now road bridges
so the act of a march "across the Belts" was to attack Denmark
    in an unexpected way.
BTW the Swedes and Danes were at war on and off
for the first three hundred years after Sweden's withdrawal
from the Kalmar Union in the 1520s.

Narva lies in modern day Estonia and was a part of the Swedish empire at the time, where 10 000 Swedish soldiers defeated 40 000 russian soldiers with the help of a blizzard changing direction blinding the russians as the Swedes charged, the russians retreated/fled across the bridge over the river Peiper, but the stampede collapsed the bridge killing most if not all of the russian soldiers.
