I agree 100%. Recently bought a Chronarch D7 that was said to be "rough". Ended up being that very bearing. It also makes servicing the reel take just a hair longer. Give me a bushing all day in that spot

For real.....I dig it.....The color is slick..and it's finish is so much better than the Metanium DC ever was....when new which was like a dirty looking gunmetal that looked beat up when new

My guess about the slight V shape of the arbor is that it creates a triangle to the flanges and strengthens them as there is that much less line pressing outward. This would afford lighter walls which stand farther outside the line's diameter and jeopardize rotation inertia the more material there is further from the axis (think Dorothy Hammil) . The goal is to reduce rotational mass and lighten the strengthened spool. But too much of it, will offset the line-lay depending on various diameters of line, so easy does it on the V.

Hey Nick, love the content! I found some crazy old spinners going through some of my dad’s late friend’s fishing gear. I found a Daiwa bg15 and what looks to be a mitchell 308 from a billion years ago lol. Both are in rough cosmetic shape but still retrieve line and have drags that aren’t shot. Would you be interested in looking at them? I know you are more into the new egg beaters coming out but figured I’d reach out to you.
What gear did you use to replace the on metanium?
Is there any info out there comparing i-dc4 to the i-dc5?

TW keeps changing the arrival date of the Shimano poison which is starting to annoy me. First June 14 then April 30 then May 20 and then back to June 14. For me thought it says May 20 on my order so I hope that’s right. I’m excited to get the rod for the most part the 6’11 m+, also I think something’s wrong with one of my guide with my expride 7’2 mh. It makes a grinding noise but no abrasions the seems on my line but I have never used braid on it just flouro. I know how much you hate the metanium dc man but for it’s the perfect reel, but never will Spool braid most likely. Straight flourcarbon is the line hands down we’re I’m fishing.
Do you know where I can get a 90mm handle to put on this?

Oh hey while your here I was wondering if putting the boca bearings in the metanium would be a downgrade from what it has already I know putting them on my chronarch’s helped and I put them on my core 50mg and it seemed like an upgrade but that was also the first time I broke a reel down all the way cleaned and lubed with that Shimano dura ace grease so I’m not sure if replacing them helped bc of the cleaning and lubing I did at the same time but the spool spins on it for 1:44 which is better than any other reel I’ve cleaned by a long stretch. And thx for all your knowledge man.
I'd purge and clean the existing bearings first.. Although with the met DC. The side plate bearing isn't accessed normally.... (don't use alcohol anywhere in that side plate. It'll melt that rubber coating. I've used tons of boca bearing sets over the years and it was a standard add on... On every new reel for a long time.. I stopped years ago after finding the gains to be minimal at best over stock. And almost none existant compared to purged and properly oiled stock bearings.. It's up to you.. Bearings get burnished with oil that usually can only be removed through heat solvents, high speed or ultrasonic. If they are gunked up and sluggish. Replace em. But if go elsewhere for bearings of spending boca money as they're Chinese bearings. Look at some of better bearings on hedgehog studios site

Wow didn't even get a notification for this.
the amount of impressions meaning the amount of times my vids are shown to viewers has been extremely low for the past month. Very high click through rate.....but the past 3 weeks has been very very low on new vids.....5.5 million impressions with 890,000 views per month on my library.....but the past 5 vids never were put in front of peoples eyes. Despite a long view duration and high engagement rate....This vids engagement rate was crazy.....between likes comments and clicks on end screens and cards...it was around 25% where as most get 5% Very weird.......

They might not necessarily have "scrapped" the bearing under the handle shaft. I'm a machinist, and when you got the reel disassembled and pulled the handle shaft, the blue color of the bushing was sort of a give away. Self lubricating plastic bearings are being more widely used every day.

@@TackleAdvisors yes and no. The material in plastic bearings is of a higher quality than a bushing. Should have a much longer life.

I recently got a Scorpion DC, and I'm SO glad I did. There's one and only one thing I don't like: there's much more (sideways, not turning-wise) play in the handle and knobs than I'm used to with my other Shimano reels, and it's out of place on such a beautiful and pricey reel. Please tell me how to get rid of it and remove the X-axis wiggle. Shims? Washers? Witch doctor?

You also equate Scorpion with Curado. Have you noticed any difference in cranking power? I have both the Scorpion DC and Curado DC, and the Curado DC just feels more powerful while the Scorpion DC feels more ... toy-ish?
It's the same reel....different paint, The handle knobs are shimmed better so there is less in and out than on the curado while retrieving (that can make a massive differnce in feel as that's the first line of contact) Other than that I don't know the gear ratios that you have but maybe the different handle lengths or ratios make it feel different. But all the parts are interchangeable.
I bought a Shimano scorpion mgl and after about 6 months it started marking noises on the retrieve I believe that it’s the main micro gears but I oiled it and it still makes sounds so what should I do?
Mine started squeaking / chirping.... No idea what it was lubed everything and it still squeaked... Soaked the clutch in oil and it went away.. I assume it was that

Pick your Bain. What Shimano would you recommend for a large swimbait reel? Would this do it well or the Bantam MGL ?
I think if you're throwinng bigger baits. The tranx 200 and it's different method of supporting the spool shaft would be a benefit. Which is a benefit with bigger swimbaits 3 ounces 75 grams plus....But This reel and the bantam as long as capacity isn't an issue would do fine....same with the curado k. In a 10 ounce pacakge that abu beast 40 is proving to be very very nice. I put it on par with the tranx 300/400

i know this might be a stupid question but I wanted to know if the 2018 Daiaw ballistic lt 4000 spinning reel on the very top of the reel stem were it says made in china is that still a good reel ?like is that what J&H Tackle has im just making sure because I recently ordered one from academy sports an it's bothering the crap out of me

over at my region, they released a ballistic JDM which is made in japan
So the parts on the reel are made in Japan an the reel is manufactured in china ?
Where did you get the brass gear for the metanium dc..? I like to change my out too.
You can get them from the tackle trap. Same gears as the brass met mgl.
Assuming the gears are the same as the MGL gears, you can order a set of gears from The Tackle Trap and the kit will include a new gear set along with the required drag washer

Order through Amazon and they'll just charge you standard tax for your area, and may even provide free shipping. I did.
Your camera has the colour right as compared to others. This red is simply gorgeous. I do have one complaint though, I am also a low gear ratio guy, so I will be getting the 151, but here is the thing that Shimano pi*ses me off, for most of their JDM reels, unless we are talking about XG, to date they still come with a pathetic 84mm handle. Is just too damn short. 90mm is pretty much the industry's minimum these days which means I will have to fork out another US$80 for an aftermarket handle.
You could just put the larger curado handle on it and it'd be cheaper than $80, maybe even try to sell the smaller one to get some of your money back if you cared to. You don't *have* to go aftermarket.
Hmmm...would it be possible to swap out the bearing on the curado for a bushing
I'll have to take a peek and see if the shafts are the same size....and configured the same.....if they are..then sure. if not...then it's more complicated than it's worth

I think it depends on the reel, the application, and the angler.... If you haven't owned a DC brake... I say give one a try. You may love it. Not many negatives for bass duty. The slx DC is my favorite compared to the metanium and curado DC reels

So with Shimano's new rule, would that mean reels like the Aldebaran BFS would get a dealer dropped if they sold it outside of the JDM or Asian market? Or just make it so that a dealer is incentivized not to in order to save themselves?
I guess we'll be finding out.....I asked a dealer about that specific reel..Aldees are available all over....but not specific variants. That's is the exact grey area type that some dealers don't want to deal with.
This has me confused/nervous. I really hope Daiwa doesn't do that too. I was really wanting to order an Aldebaran BFS potentially, might just get another Daiwa now, I like the reliability of the Alphas (AIR) build anyways...

No clue... But it's something that shimano is implementing to protect dealers. When the USA got the Antares.. You could have bought it for 20 percent less a month sooner from Japan.. Completely hosing US dealers.. Which is the idea behind it from what I've heard..

I took apart my senna to fix it,I fixed it alright giant piece of salt right on the gears,nice!
I tried to put it back together didn’t work and tried again and tried again and again.
2hours later GOT IT!
LOL.....been at it for 25 years lol.....I get excited when a completely new design shows up....they are all remarkably similar. I recomend filming the tear down so you know what goes where. and work on a lint free towel....what I film on isn't newvb friendly because if you drop a part it'll go flying since it's a very hard surface.

That's why I call it the bastard bearing.....It so often goes un touched.....when it's one of the most important lol......They dont really...but any corrosion or contaminants that get in that bearing...are immediately felt when turning the handle......Same as if you had handle knob bearings that crap out.....it'll feel like you demolished your gear teeth....It's not perfect nothing is because deposits and gunk can still get in there....but it's less perceivable......When I finally get to the conceptz you'll see a blob of salt deposits down there....and no effect on performance...(at least that salt deposit was there 7 months ago when I last opened it lol.
Lube is always good in areas under load as long as it doesn't trap sand and dirt. Which at that location isn't likely.....also mitigate water from getting deep in the pocket. Grease makes for a good barrier
I remember you saying about a year or so ago that brass and aluminium makes no difference and that folks on tackletour were upgrading to brass for no reason. Now you use brass on all your Mets lol
Like anything else...views change based on personal experiences. (if they don't there's a problem lol) I remember at some point saying it made no difference......and later saying I was late to aboard the hate train....but my tickets punched.....At the same time...I can't say a single negative thing about what the steez reels use in their alu main gears. And then there is the chornarch which feels amazing compared to what my stock Mets felt like. Which makes no sense...

HELP! my scorpion mgl was great for about 6 hours. It has started making an obnoxious speaking noise and i think its coming from the handle... took the handle off tonight and added some grease, but its still squeaking. What say you?
I think it is coming from the bearing in the handle side plate. It is spinning in the side plate causing squeaking...why is it spinning between the side plate and bearing and not just the bearing spinning? lol
Yo for real? Mine did that too... Drove me nuts. Soaked the side plate bearing and oiled the crap out of the one way bearing. After it sat for a bit it went away. But yeah.. Sounded like a bird call
Yes! See the thing is when I removed the side plate bearing and put the handle back on it still happened. So maybe it’s in the one way bearing? Damn I don’t know enough about reels to know what bearing is the one way bearing...I’ve messaged Japan Tackle and I’m going to try and have my reel replaced, if it happens again to the next reel I suppose I’ll have to find out what the one way bearing is...thanks for the reply.
It took me a solid hour of messin with it and thinkin I did something or lost a part (i didn't reassemble it for a few days....) Was very surprised and in a way releived someon else had the issue. Worst thing was. It wasn't a definate solution....just a few things I did in excess that cured it.

At some point can you do a review on one of the Top House Branded reels either spinning or casting from BassProShops/Cabela's/OffShore Angler ? It seems as if they are attempting to upgrade from the major brands at each particular price point -
I try to theme my background colors to the reel....make it fun as long as I can do it without blinding anyone or giving a seizure....I want to...and that's a project I wanted to do.....I'll see if the timing works in the next month or so.

I haven't seen much on it.....what size are you lookin for? if under 10 ounces in frame size I think you may be best getting that okuma epixor off amazon for cheap..I've put up links where it was between 35 and 40 bucks....rock solid and great line lay...with a bail that feels better than a stella when ya open and close it.

I've bought the most from Japan Lureshop, Followed by Plat.co.jp And JapanTackle. Japan lureshop ships faster than free shipping on tackle warehouse.....And the 20 bucks is back in your pocket with a free megabass lure. If you buy a reel. I think I've made 20 orders from Japan lureshop over the years.....never had an issue.

Could try to review the Shimano spheros . Ever heard of the brand ATC ? Could try some of the reels
The spheros is literally a Saragossa with a pain job. Different bailwire, top only drag system with everything else being the same..those difference are pretty significant if it's seeing hard use on big fish in harsh conditions.
But the spheros sw is a great reel....(the JDM version is a significant down grade getting a hex handle shaft vs threaded) I've heard about them once before. Know nothing about them

@Leopold Well i have to order scorpion parts to fix all the calais that come in. mostly side plates, from people wrenching down the drag too much.
To be fair, they've used the scorpion name from the antares, to metaniums to curados over the years. Recently the scorpion nomenclature has been for curados.

You can use proxy services. They can't stop people buying nice and cheap JDM tackles. If you want us to buy from local sources, just do a price match. Why do we have to pay 30% more for the same reel?
