Thank you very much Linda. Happy you enjoyed the video. Bikes on the beach is the answer. Or actually since I get asked a lot why I do not show my face I decide to show it this way. We had a lot of fun riding in the hard sand. As long as you were going with the wind. It was fairly strong that day. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks so much. This wood is amazing. It came from a very old and huge tree. A small branch that when cut up filled the back of my truck. So not so small. Gary
Great live edge bowl. Walnut is truly king of American hardwoods. Looks like you had a delightful time bike touring along the beach. Glad you had a great time.
Thank you Doug and Black Walnut seems to be a favorite of many. We took did on long ride on the beach but the day of the picture the tide was in and we could not find any of the hard sand you get when it is out. Still had fun. Thanks for watching, Gary

Beautiful piece Gary. When you spoke about dark and light wood, i really like any dark wood, but, i absolutely love the contrast between dark and light wood just like this piece, i absolutely love it. Great job and video 😁👏👍🏼
Thank you John. I made it too hard. So I get ask all the time why I do not show my face in my videos. So in the picture was my face LOL. The was a stick in the tide and a bird on the water though. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you very much. The Devils Punch Bowl was calm that day. It is fun to watch with high tides and rough water. It really makes a nice splash. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very nice Bryon. I have seen the tree this came off of many times. It is on a farm my nephew's in laws have. I have gotten English Walnut from there but was sure happy when the trimmings from the Black Walnut was offered. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you George. It was a trick question. I am always ask if why I do not show my face so this time I did. There was something in the water and not sure what it was. Lots of both in this area and the whales come real close as well. Just a few miles north and Depot Bay we see them a lot. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very nice Gary! Thanks for the lesson on how to set up a chunk of wood for a natural edge. I will try to practice that when I get a chance. A beautiful piece. I love black walnut as well. I am surrounded by loads of it, and it is one that I have always loved to work with. If I ever get a chance, I could bring you a truckload of it. It is truly one of the beautiful woods. I have wanted to try to do a segment project using the dark and light sapwood from black walnut as different segments. Just wondering how that will turn out. In the meantime, thank you again for a beautiful project, and another good lesson. See you next week!
Thank you Mark. On a lot of pieces you need to shim it up for making a flat spot to mount to. It really does not matter if the bottom is flat because that will be shaped in the turning process. I have saved a lot of English Walnut trimmings for segment work. Some of the light and some of the dark. I dried it in my cardboard drying box and showed that in a video awhile back. Thanks for watching, Gary
She's a beauty. Keep up the good work. I'm guessing you two are posing with an otter in the background. Who knows, I get lucky guessing once in a while. Looks like it was fun either way. 👍
Thank you Dave. It was actually just us posing. I get ask a lot why I do not show myself in front of the camera much so it was just a little surprise. Actually a few miles up the road is famous for the whales coming in close. The last trip we came down here we were lucky enough to see them. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary! I'm absolutely blown away. I know you are the master of complicated geometry and cool illusions, but I like this sort of thing just as much. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks so much Perry. I do have another glue up coming but will have another chunk of a log first. The glue up is a bit complex and I want to make sure to get it right. Take care, Gary
Very nice, turning a green piece of Boxelder live edge. Those types of bowls really highlight the contrasting grain and colors. I was glad to hear you explain about the tailstock getting in your way when doing the edge since when I was hollowing mine I was actually wondering what Gary would do. Also nice to hear the sounds of the tool “skipping” along the sides of the wood while turning. That vibration appears to be normal harmonic when the sides get to a certain thinness. Thank you for your instructions and guidance.
Thank you Lee. Boxelder live edge sounds very interesting. I have a piece of Boxelder given to me. Kind of an odd shape and plenty dry. I have not turned any of it yet. Big enough for a couple turnings. It is nice to have the tailstock against the piece when getting started on the inside but on a smaller piece it gets in the way real fast. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi Gary... Wow... what a beautiful bowl... As you said.. the contrasting colours are just amazing... well done... Looks like you and your better half are going for a land speed record... am I right?.. Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thanks so much Andy. You are correct ...it was us! Yes when the wind was with us we almost broke the sound barrier...well about 760 MPH short of it LOL. Thanks for watching my friend. Gary
Great job! There's lot's of walnut around here. It's one of my favorite woods to work with. It looks good with or without the contrast. As for the worry of the bark coming off. I use ca glue all the way around the edge before I sand. Sometimes sooner. Happy Turning.
Steven I come across more English Walnut than Black Walnut. It is nice as well. I like to use CA before final clean up coats. Easer to remove and it is hard to remove the staining with just sanding. Thanks for watching and for your tips. Gary
gary that is a nice natural edge bowl i wanna turn one of that same wood i love the cont of the heartwood and sapwood u take care of yourself ok? just remember, God loves u, God bless. chris
I just came home from my annual trip to Bay City, OR. That's 5 minutes from Tillamook. I go there every year to spend 2 weeks with mu Niece & her family. They have a nice little house on a hillside, looking down at the Tillamook Bay. Beverly Beach is a nice spot.
@@ThePapa1947 I currently live in the Seattle, WA area, but we all grew up on the southern OR coast. I've spent some time in Denver, CO, The Dalles, OR, Woodland Hills, CA, Coeur d'Alene, ID, and even 2 years someplace in Georgia when I was 4-ish. Oh, also Lebanon, OR. My dad moved us around a lot. Coos Bay, OR is where I went to High School. We had our parents, 7 kids & various critters that got dragged around every 6 mos to a year. Where are you from?
Sorry I'm so late viewing this, Gary! Wow, that is some wonderful Black Walnut! From the moment you showed the raw piece, it was clear it was going to be special and it is! I'm amazed at the three main colors of this piece, the very dark bark, the sap wood and then that beautiful heart wood. I absolutely love the shape you chose for this bowl, so graceful! Amazing too, is the finish you got on this rather green wood. Really beautiful and with a great shine! Another excellent turning by one of my favorite turners and a fun video to watch! Oh, and it looks like the tide is going out in the last picture. I've been up and down the Oregon coast a few times but don't remember ever having seen the Devils Punch Bowl before. Very cool! 😊 Phil
Thanks Phil and no problem. For sure this was a nice piece of wood. I wish I would have taken a picture of the tree. They were offered $10,000 for it but just laughed. It came from a place called The Peachy Pig Farm. My nephews in laws have a farm and they sell fruits and berries as well as it is a you pick. I was concerned about the finish because it was such a fresh piece but it worked out ok. The tide was just going out that day. We got to ride a long ways the day before because the tide was out and the sand gets hard enough to ride. Not so much when it was in. Devils Punch Bowl is at Otter Rock which was 2.5 miles north of Beverly Beach. Thanks for watching my friend and take care, Gary
Thanks so much Louis! I am always happy when Mother Nature gives me something like this to do my small part in. Finding amazing grain and color is what keeps me going. Take care, Gary
Very nicely done, I have always liked natural edge bowls. I have a hard time getting them to look like yours. Looks like there was something in the water behind you in what picture. Thank you for sharing your video.
Thank you Mark. Natural edge bowls do have a look of their own and it reminds you it was actually a tree at one time. There was a stick floating in and I think a bird. But what was going on I was actually showing my face in a video LOL. I get asked all the time why I don't. So it was surprise trick question LOL Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Billy. Oh yeah I do know how you love Walnut. I think we all do. I keep getting told that Black Walnut is very toxic and will make your skin break out. We had a great time and rode to the beach through the camp ground and rode on it everyday. Lots of fun and had some great sea food for lunch on the way home. Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful work of course. I like the looks of all wood, but Black Walnut is one I like a little more. It grows in my area here in Central Texas. I have on in my side yard that keeps me entertained with the noise of the walnuts dropping on the metal roof of my big shed. Haha. I am watching for the chance to make a walking stick out of a limb of good size. It looks like you had a nice cycling trip along the beach. Thanks for sharing your work.
Thank you Josh. I was a bit concerned turning it green and then leaving for 4 days or so. But it all worked out. Since all of it is what I may do a twice turned bowl...but no time delay in the video. What do you think??? Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I think showing the twice-turning process is a good idea. I'd include the use of a microwave, though you could also do a video just on drying techniques.
Hi Gary, That came out amazing! I love natural edge work. I haven't turned any kind of bowl and probably two or three years now! Lol I have a bunch of cherry blanks that I got after we had a tornado here in Connecticut oh I don't know four or five years ago. I keep saying I'm going to turn some natural edge bowls out of it but I don't seem to get to it. Thanks for the video God bless! Tom
Thank you Tom. I like most all finishes if used in the right place. But I prefer the ones that do not take a week to put on. Not making very many things for food use gives me lots of choices. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank You Gary....What is there to complain about Black Walnut? It is always a show stopper and you have more pieces stored away just waiting for your imagination. I always look forward to your inventive shop work, your share of knowledge and your commercial free broadcast. Until next time... TM
Thanks TM! For sure I will be turning more. Not sure I can wait a year or more for it to dry so might have to do a few twice turned bowls. All in one video though! We use the skip ahead button for commercials on TV but I sure would not put you through that LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary
What a perfect treatment of that piece of wood, Gary. When you first showed the polishing paste I was wondering if it was following Danish oil. I like the higher gloss of the poly and the chatoyancy it encourages, but it doesn't take away from the grain and contrast, either. I picked up a few things from your video that I needed for a current tricky project. A resin casting of a maple burl that was unexpectedly out of balance until I began hollowing and found the punkiness. Some of what I'm dealing with reminded me of you shear scraping the bark fuzz as well as one other cut you made. Glad you had such a great trip. Devil's Punch Bowl. Interesting and nice image. Canada lost "Teacup Rock" in Prince Edward Island from Hurricane Fiona. Huge rock with a narrow base not tipped over or nearby, just gone. Amazing formations and power. Have a great weekend.
Thank you Jay and happy you are making headway on your project. I was battling a piece today and decided to let it do what it wanted and I am happy I did. Devils Punch Bowl is a pretty cool place. We have lots of interesting things to see along the coast. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gorgeous bowl, Gary! The contrast between sap and heart wood is excellent and that chatoiance (sp?)-- spectacular! And thank you again for having made my shop a stop on your trip to the beach. We had a wonderful time while you were here!
Thank you Dave! Yes it is a very pretty piece of wood. Going to be hard for me to wait to turn more so a twice turned bowl may be in the books. We had a wonderful time visiting with you as well. Sure glad you wife was able to be there as well or mine would have hauled me out a lot sooner. I think she can only listen to so much wood turning talk LOL. We came home the same way and I was going to honk but the highway is too far for you to have heard it. Take care, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 We do hear big trucks and emergency vehicles that are out there. But if you HAD come by again, it's highly likely you'd have found a large chunk of green big-leaf maple in the cargo hatch when you got home! 😁
That is another amazing bowl, Gary! Walnut never fails to amaze. Love the job you did with this one, my friend. I would tell you to keep up the great work but I’m quite sure you don’t know how to do anything else. 👍👍 Happy turning, …..Gord
Thank you Gord and you are so right. Hard to fail with Walnut. I can not promise next weeks as I almost took it out of the lathe and burned it...LOL. Well actually it was headed for the burn pile a few times but this time I could hear it say. "No no...please give me a chance. I promise I will be very pretty? Thanks so much Jim. I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching.

Gary
Beautiful piece Gary. When you spoke about dark and light wood, i really like any dark wood, but, i absolutely love the contrast between dark and light wood just like this piece, i absolutely love it. Great job and video 😁👏👍🏼
Thank you Japie and thanks for watching.
Take care my friend,
Gary
Another great work, beautiful!!!
Thank you very much Mauro!
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful bowl.
Thank you Jason I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Garry, what a smashing wee bowl I do wish we could get wood like that in Scotland, nice to see you enjoyed your wee break
Thank you Alan. Happy you liked the bowl and we had a great time on the trip.
Take care,
Gary
That is one beautiful bowl Gary. I'm sure there is something/someone swimming in the ocean behind your first photo. Take care, John
Thank you John. I made it too hard. So I get ask all the time why I do not show my face in my videos. So in the picture was my face LOL.
The was a stick in the tide and a bird on the water though.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Really nice piece Gary, love the live natural edge and finish. I bet the coast was nice, love that Devils bowl spot. Stay well.
Thank you very much. The Devils Punch Bowl was calm that day. It is fun to watch with high tides and rough water. It really makes a nice splash.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Black walnut is what I primarily turn since that I one of the two woods I have the most of growing on our 20 acres.
Very nice Bryon. I have seen the tree this came off of many times. It is on a farm my nephew's in laws have. I have gotten English Walnut from there but was sure happy when the trimmings from the Black Walnut was offered.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
love the bowl. I believe the is a sea otter or a sea lion in the ocean behind you.
Thank you George. It was a trick question. I am always ask if why I do not show my face so this time I did.
There was something in the water and not sure what it was. Lots of both in this area and the whales come real close as well. Just a few miles north and Depot Bay we see them a lot.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That one turned out nice!
Thanks so much Jack! And thanks for watching,
Gary
She's a beauty. Keep up the good work.
I'm guessing you two are posing with an otter in the background. Who knows, I get lucky guessing once in a while. Looks like it was fun either way. 👍
Thank you Dave. It was actually just us posing. I get ask a lot why I do not show myself in front of the camera much so it was just a little surprise. Actually a few miles up the road is famous for the whales coming in close. The last trip we came down here we were lucky enough to see them.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
love your work thanks for sharing
Thanks so much Neil and thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
Take care,
Gary
wow great job
Thank you Mark. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Very nice. As stated in a previous comment I come into a lot of black walnut lately. I have never tuner an Thanks for tip using plastic bag..
Thanks Doug! It is always nice to come across Black Walnut
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Black Walnut is always beautiful, excellent job of turning Gary. Hope you enjoyed your trip.
Thank you Kent. Yes we had a great trip.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow, the contrast of the dark and light wood is beautiful
Thanks Tim it sure is. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
Gorgeous, love everything about it. 🙃
Looks like a seal or sealion in the water.
Thank you Marge! Happy you enjoyed it.
Take care,
Gary
A very neat bowl love the bark
Thank you Paul and thanks for watching,
Gary
Spindles Luie does great work. This walnut bowl looks great. I'll have to try wipe on poly. I normally only use finish that is easily touched up.
Yes he sure does and has a nice video today.
Wipe on poly is a very nice finish. Worth trying.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gorgeous!
Thanks so much Willa and thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary...
Wow... what a beautiful bowl...
Gary
I thought your bowl looked a lot like "Devils punch bowl. Beautifully done!
Thank you Mike. Someone else said that and I think you are right.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Gary
gary that is a nice natural edge bowl i wanna turn one of that same wood i love the cont of the heartwood and sapwood u take care of yourself ok? just remember, God loves u, God bless. chris
Thank you Chris. Walnut is a very pretty wood for sure. Not to worry Chris I wake up very morning know he loves me and everyone else.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 ik i always like to say that
Beautiful wood and turning
Thank you Wayne and thanks for watching.
Gary
Beautiful bowl. Love turning walnut it has great color to it. 👍
Thanks so much Robert and I agree with you on turning Walnut. It is a great wood.
Take care,
Gary
I just came home from my annual trip to Bay City, OR. That's 5 minutes from Tillamook. I go there every year to spend 2 weeks with mu Niece & her family. They have a nice little house on a hillside, looking down at the Tillamook Bay. Beverly Beach is a nice spot.
Thank you Amy. I have spent a lot of time fishing in Tillamook and the surroundings.
Where are you from?
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very cool! 😊
Phil
Thanks for watching my friend and take care,
Gary
For me, it's hard to beat a simple design, expertly executed. Wonderful piece Gary. Between you and Mother Nature it's a WOW!
Thanks so much Louis! I am always happy when Mother Nature gives me something like this to do my small part in. Finding amazing grain and color is what keeps me going.
Take care,
Gary
You are correct. I prefer a simple design too a complex one.
So it was surprise trick question LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Absolutely gorgeous piece. The colors and contrast are beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Eileen and thanks for watching.
Gary
Wow that is a beautiful piece. Absolutely stunning. Black walnut is beautiful. Great job Gary as usual.
Thank you Chris. Hard to beat black Walnut for beauty.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
beautiful
Thank you! 😊
I love the shape of the bowl and its bark edges! also you seem to have had a nice vacation in Oregon!
Thank you very much Einar. Yes we had a good time. Have been there many times and it is one of our favortie.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Truly a beautiful piece, Gary! But you know how much I love Walnut!
Looks like y'all had a great trip as well!
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful work of course. I like the looks of all wood, but Black Walnut is one I like a little more. It grows in my area here in Central Texas. I have on in my side yard that keeps me entertained with the noise of the walnuts dropping on the metal roof of my big shed. Haha. I am watching for the chance to make a walking stick out of a limb of good size. It looks like you had a nice cycling trip along the beach. Thanks for sharing your work.
Thank you Travis. This limb came off the biggest Black Walnut tree I have seen.
We had a great time riding on the beach.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Lovely bowl with amazing contrast between all the woods and bark, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you very much Al. Happy you enjoyed it.
Take care,
Gary
That's one beautiful bowl, Gary. Walnut is definitely one of my favorites and this one came out great.
That bowl is absolutely beautiful. The wipe on poly is an excellent finish. It lets the wood's chatoyance really glow.
Thank you James. For sure the poly can allow the chatoyance to really shine.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I had to google chatoyance...😂. But you're right. Gives it that cat's eye almost metallic look.
Hi Gary,
That came out amazing!
Tom
Thank you Tom, natural edge is nice but I like about any kind of turning.
Hope you have a very Merry Christmas. God Bless,
Gary
Spectacular bowl Gary! I love the contrasting colours.
Thanks Ron. It is a very special wood for sure.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Another great piece!! Great call, Im not a fan of Danish or Tung oil!!
Thank you Tom. I like most all finishes if used in the right place. But I prefer the ones that do not take a week to put on.
Not making very many things for food use gives me lots of choices.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank You Gary....What is there to complain about Black Walnut? It is always a show stopper and you have more pieces stored away just waiting for your imagination. I always look forward to your inventive shop work, your share of knowledge and your commercial free broadcast. Until next time... TM
Thanks TM! For sure I will be turning more. Not sure I can wait a year or more for it to dry so might have to do a few twice turned bowls. All in one video though!
We use the skip ahead button for commercials on TV but I sure would not put you through that LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 We do hear big trucks and emergency vehicles that are out there. But if you HAD come by again, it's highly likely you'd have found a large chunk of green big-leaf maple in the cargo hatch when you got home! 😁
That is another amazing bowl, Gary! Walnut never fails to amaze. Love the job you did with this one, my friend. I would tell you to keep up the great work but I’m quite sure you don’t know how to do anything else. 👍👍
Happy turning,
…..Gord
Thank you Gord and you are so right. Hard to fail with Walnut.
I can not promise next weeks as I almost took it out of the lathe and burned it...LOL. Well actually it was headed for the burn pile a few times but this time I could hear it say. "No no...please give me a chance. I promise I will be very pretty? Well all I can say is it just might be because I have a coat of sealer on it and flipped around to finish. But I it warned, it if you give me a hard time on the inside...well you know the rest!
Thanks for your very kind words my friend,
Gary
That is so nice! That wood looks very nice to turn.
Thank you Chris. Yes it does turn very nicely. So does English Walnut.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Yo Gary, that’s a mighty pretty bowl. I like the chatoyance of the wood. It’s amazing how such beauty can be unlocked from a chunk of wood.
Glad you had a good time down on the Oregon coast. It’s always good to get away every now and then.
👍👍👍👍👍 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
Thank you John. Yes the wood is really pretty. I might even do a twice turn piece soon. I have a hard time waiting for a log to dry...LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
The Walnut is so gorgeous and I love the contrasts! Your trip must have been amazing!
Thank you very much Carol. Yes the trip was great. We had been looking forward to it but a few things came up so we did it a few weeks later than planned. But we really only make plans if we need to reserve a camp site. We were glad we found one where we wanted to go.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Stunning! You work is inspiring to me. I am currently working on my first segmented turning. Peruvian walnut, white oak and maple.
I love the Oregon coast, but what’s not to love? I missed whatever was going on in your pictures.
Thank you Todd. You have picked some great wood for your first segmented turning.
Yes the Oregon coast has a lot to offer What was going on was the two of us on the beach. I do not get in front of the camera much on my videos so I added this.
