Wood Turning Turn A Picture Into A Bowl

- I use my bowl from a board method to make this bowl. I use a photograph and some bandsaw cuts to create the shape. Just avoided a fail on this one but it all worked out great. I used Sapele, Maple, Oak and Padauk.
Finished with MInwax Wipe On Poly and Acks Sanding Paste

Thanks Valerie. I just compared it to the actual banners this morning. All agreed it matches pretty close.
Love your banner bowl. It turned out perfect.
Thanks so much Paul. Happy you liked it. I knew I could make the shape but the overall look is even better than I was expecting.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Definitely a good choice to keep it square. Lovely piece. Jonathan
Thank you Jonathan. Leaving it square still left the chance to make it round. But I had decided to leave it not matter what.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

You are so talented!!
Thanks Luie, happy you like it. And thanks for your very kind words.
So these banners are up for maybe 3 months and then they change them out. So Tuesday morning we went to church and guess what? They had just put them up and I had just uploaded the video that morning.
Your old lathe is looking good!
Take care,
Gary
It looks even better than the banner!
Thank you very much Susan.
Outstanding Gary I love it very beautiful take care and God bless my friend
Thank you Mike. Those banners are changed through out the year. They were gone for close to a year after I took the photo. I finished the turning last Tuesday and then that morning we went to church and guess what they were back up.
Pretty cool if you ask me. Take care and God bless,
Gary
Excellent piece Gary
Thanks it was a lot of fun to make.
Take care,
Gary
Inspiration from church, might make a nice collection plate!
Thank you Stuart! Our church is pretty big so it would need a lot of these bowls. Plus we give online because we are both in the choir so it is much easier.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

That is a fantastic bowl!
Thanks so much Amy and thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
Gary, very impressive you just have a knack for the beautiful combinations of wood. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much Kevin. I consider myself color blind to somethings but I can see when choosing which wood will look good.
When I got my drivers license in 1963 I flunked the color blindness test given. Now it is some browns look green to me and so on.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Awesome piece.
Well done
Thank you very much Kevin and thanks for watching,
Gary

All of your turnings are really great
Thanks and keep them coming
Thanks so much Jeffery I will do my best.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary,
Excellent as usual. I'll be making this one. I'll send you a photo
RP
Thank you Rp! Looking forward to seeing it. The banners are back up again as of Tuesday of this week. this is only 1/3 of the height. There is more under it but really wanted to make this square. I may think about doing one that is 3 times as long as it is wide. Maybe LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I think yours looks better than the one on the photo. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much Ed. I should have added the full picture of the banner. It has a total of 3 sections like this and is about 8 feet tall.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is a great looking piece. Nice work.
Thank you Jiggsy and thanks for watching.
Gary
You nailed it, looks great.

Take care my friend,
Gary
Beautiful bowl!
Thank you very much Dotty!
Pretty, very beautiful,👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much Gao!
THANK YOU GARY....I love all the adventure of watching a craftsman explore a new idea. I watch, I learn & my peanut brain starts to imagine ...what if.....??? One thing leads to another & sometimes I find myself in my own shop exploring my own version.... Gary I must say (after watching you play in your shop) your inventive imagination will never ever let you down. Always challenging...ah...ah....(OK Gary, later...I just glanced at one of my incomplete "table projects"...) Your abstract bowl looks wonderful & again I love your adventure sharing your process. Until next time.....TM
Thanks so much TM. I love doing things different and trying new things. I have a note pad with things that I may or may not do.
This one was always on the to-do list.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Love the bowl looks freaking awesome I love it
Thanks so much Danny. I am very happy with how it turned out. And those banners were put back up early this week.
What a coincidence!

Thanks so much Sony, happy you like it.
Gary
Another beauty Gary and a very simple way of getting everything together! Sapelle is a beautiful that I have use a lot when I can get it! Well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al, it was lots of fun. Where I get it the price is fairly reasonable compared to other woods I get such as Padauk. But like everything I see the prices have gone up.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Amazing bowl from a board. I’m really blown away with how your mind works as far as coming up with a process/procedure that will give you the results you expect. My wife taught the gifted students in our area her last 15 years as a teacher so I asked her to watch a couple of your videos. She was also impressed with you seeing the process before ever making any shavings. She said you were very bright and intelligent and she would know.
Wow Danny not sure what to say about your wife's comment other thank you very much.
I do feel I was given a gift to see how things look before I start them. But I worked as a wood patternmaker and would be given 2D drawings with 3 views. My job was to make a pattern out of wood that was 3D in shape and match drawing to very tight tolerances. I still remember the day as an apprentice where I looked at the drawing and it was as clear as a bell. I did pretty good in my trade. I retired in 2012 and now work in my home shop trying to come up with something new.
Thanks again and thank you wife for me.
Gary
Very pretty!
Thank you very much Cecille and thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary! Looks even better than the banner, I would say 👍🏻 Well done, another gorgeous bowl!!! I always think that with all the gorgeous bowls you have turned over time, it must be hard to find some free space in the house to really show them off… They are all sooooo beautiful! I have to do some catching up on your videos, I have been sort of bit busy lately and falling off to sleep early… Beautiful picture of the sunset and the ocean at the end, very soothing 😊 Thank you for another great video, Gary, take care 🙏🏻
Thank you very much I really enjoyed making it. For sure I am running out of places to put them. I
I sure understand getting busy. With the nice weather it is easy to just go sit and relax in the sun. Then I discover the freezer part of our refrigerator was not working. I reset it and seems to be ok for now. Darn electronic controlled things...I love them but much harder to figure out.
I have been using photos from around Oregon I took as well as some trips we taken. This one was taken at Newport Oregon in 2006 on a very special trip we took.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I definitely wanted you to put the slight drop corner. I have done a dropped corner bowl and really loved it.
Great !
Thank you Dana. I think a turning like this really needs the corners to drop a little. I
Thanks for watching.
It looks fantastic
Thank you very much Ronnie and thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice work!! I really like your artistic talent.
Thanks Doug I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching,
Gary
very nice it look better
Thank you very much Delbert and thanks for watching.
Gary
Beautiful!
Thank you very much!
very nice job Gary! it does look like the banner, only better! that would make a nice offering plate when the banner is up at the church. it might have been ok round, but i think you made the right choice on leaving it square. the slight droop on the corners was a nice touch also! good job!
Thank you very much Dave! Now I need to pay attention to all the other banners that we have. None have got me thinking like this one did. As soon as I saw it last year I knew I would do this. Took close to a year to go ahead with it. I took the photo back then and visited the idea a few times and then said it was time.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Dera Papa,
You are such a clever man. It is so smart to maded the top in a square
shape....I Love it .... I wish
I could have one on my table. Soso nice.
♡•♡•♡•♡•♡
Thank you very much Helene. I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful.
Thank you Sue!
I don’t have the right words. Really fascinating, creative and beautiful.
Thank you very much Eric, those words sound perfect to me.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Love it!
Thank you very much Peter and thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice! 😎
Thank you very much!
Certainly no lack of imagination on your part!! No doubt, you might have been at home, driving a "Woodie" car, back in the oldened days!! Your just so comfortable with wood!!
Amazing design, beautiful wood character!! Great finish, wonderful bowl!!
Thanks so much Joe. Oh yes I love those old Woodie cars.
Never had one but my first care was a 1947 Dodge coupe. In 1963 I paid $25.00 for it. Not sure it was even worth that LOL.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 friend and I went "Halfseys" on a 48 Plymouth! $35! Surely wasn't worth it! Never had a chance at a "Woodys", But loved them!
@@joeroscillo4015 way back then we had a local ad in the newspaper called The Thrifty's. It had a $25.00 limit. I also bought a 47 Chev Fleetline and a 51 Chev Deluxe 2 door hardtop. That is the one I wished I had kept.
He said it had a cracked head and my oldest brother said no problem we can put a new head on it. Ended up having a cracked block as well. But still that was one sweet car.
By the way I also was able to resell all of them for what I paid. A whopping $25.00
@@ThePapa1947 yeah, the good old days, when most guts could work on car engines, without being an engineer!
You made a good representation of the church banner Gary. I guess inspiration for turning projects can be found anywhere!
Thank you very much and for sure there was lots of inspirations for this one.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Really cool, Look like you made a new parting tool rest for your lathe. Like the bowl!
Thank you and yes. I made 3 versions. One can be made from things you can buy very easily.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I like your last one, metal
Gary that is just lovely. Have not turned Sapele yet. I sure want to. So far Paduk has been my favorite. I love the smell. I know you can't smell it, it reminds me of vanilla.
Thank you Jane and I have used some Sapele in another turning but have not used it for the main wood. I also love Padauk.
The Sapele turns nicely.
Take care,
Gary
I really like the design, I’ve done a bit with Sapele, I like the finish but I find it can easily tear out
Thank you Rob! Yes I think the grain can be prone to tear out. The worked out pretty good though.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Gary, it looks like you pretty much nailed the design. I have some Sapele I haven’t used yet. I need to find a project for it.
Thank you Mark. I sure do love the look of the Sapele. This is the only thickness they have were I get my hardwood.
I would like 5/4 for making segments and having the nice grain show on the outside.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, really nice project. Thanks for the step by step explanation throughout the project as it makes it something I might want to try. Cheers, Tom
Thank you Tom and best of luck.
Take care,
Gary
Gorgeous bowl Gary! Awesome turning! I still need to make your jig, have to much pecan to turn still! Lol Take care brother and Happy Turning!✌🏼💫🪵
Thank you Douglas. I do need to get some logs out to turn but I have a few others to do first.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
That's brilliant great work, you must always be thinking, my wife sez it looks art deco. big thumbs up. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you Gary. Well certainly copied some art. Those banners were about 8 foot tall and 3 foot wide. A mirrored set.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Very nice
Thanks so much William and thanks for watching.
Gary
Nice match and a beautiful bowl! Never heard of Sapeli (sic) but sure is pretty.
Thank you and I had heard of it myself. It belongs to the mahogany family.
@@ThePapa1947 Thanks in return for the mahogany info.
Only you would see a pleasing banner and think, "I bet I could make a bowl like that!" And, you did! They look like twins. Excellent job on building, turning and finishing this great looking bowl, Gary! And yeah, all the wood looks great but that Sapele is just special all by itself. Such beautiful grain and color. A very fine job, my friend!
Phil
Thanks so much Phil. I kind of cheated...that banner was 3 times longer than how wide it was. There was 3 sets of these twisty shapes. Full size was about 8 feet high with a mirror image of it on the right side of our church.
For sure that Sapele is something else. I actually bought that board just for doing this.
Thanks again buddy.
Take care,
Gary
What a clever idea, it turned out lovely. As you know, I use sapele and oak (I get cheap off cuts). I copied your trick for removing a glue block yesterday and, what do you know, it worked. Thanks for sharing Gary 🌞
Thank thank you Ray and I am very pleased with the look.
Happy the trick worked for you. Now you will be hooked on doing it. I know after watching Phil do it I just had to give it a try.
Take care,
Gary
dont matter about looking like the banner cause it pretty in its own right
Thank you Donald. You are right it is the final look that is important.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl, Gary, and it really matches the banner very well. You are a magician, my friend. Your ideas are amazing and you always do such a great job of explaining what you are doing. Thanks for sharing this video. There will be a lot of turners paying homage to you by using your ideas. 👍👍
Take care,
.....Gord
Thanks so much Gord. I am very happy with it and those I have shown it to at church knew exactly what it was. So it just happens the 2 banners were put back up. We alternate through the cycles of the year.
Well I sure hope people are inspired to try new things. As you know I do not sell or make anything and my payment is taking the mystery of our wonderful hobby.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Gary
I think it came out perfect. The contrasting woods really make it an art piece
Thanks so much Michael and thanks for watching,
Gary
Love your creativity in all your turnings, Gary. You are so gracious to share the processes you go through with all of us. Thank you! This is another beautiful piece!
Thank you Greg this was a lot of fun to do. I have watched videos on things that were very complex and when someone ask in comments how to do it the answer was: figure it out your self. So instead of asking I figured it out made a video on it and I shared how to do it.
Instead of making it hard for someone learning I think it is better to encourage them.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nothing more left to say. Thanks for sharing and?inspiring!
Very nice! I think it looks better than the photo. I think square was the way to go and I like the curved downward corners.
I am anxious to try this bandsaw joint method, but first I'm about to try my first segmented turn. It will be a bowl with solid maple on the bottom, then a segmented ring of African blackwood, then a 1/8" layer of walnut, then topped with a segmented ring of Padauk with very thin slices of maple in each segment joint. I'm using 16 segment rings.
Thank you Dave. There are a lot of things you can make using the band saw method of matching those joints. I have a few other videos showing now easy it is to do.
Best of luck with your segmented turning.
Gary
A great idea from you Gary and as always, an inspiring video ,I love how this turned out mate
Cheers, Bram
Thanks so much Bram. I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching my friend.
Cheers,
Gary
Wahouu !
Merci encore,
Gary
Wonderful work. Reminds me of John 3:8 where Jesus says "The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."
Thank you very much Clint. That is a great reading.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Another beautiful piece Gary. All of your videos provide a wealth of information to newer turners like me and I'm sure many veteran turners. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much John. I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching.
Gary
Wow! Very nice Gary. It got an “Oh wow” from my wife as well. Just beautiful. Thank goodness for your strong glue joints!
Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick and thanks to your wife. I am not concerned with the round rings but I was with the square one. Yeah I was happy for the good joints.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
