    Meanwhile at the Ubisoft car lot...
    Welcome to my car dealer. Please select which edition of this car you want.
    "Why would I want to buy a car without a wind shield?"
    No idea, but it's an option.
    "This other one doesn't even have tires on it."
    It's the starting edition. Don't worry, it can still drive.
    "Why is this one more expensive than that one?"
    It adds the iconic radio device.
    "A radio is iconic?"
    You bet.

      The new corporate marketing scheme (analogy):
      Customer - C
      Publisher - P
      C - “I would like a ham sandwich, please.”
      P - “Okay. That’ll be $10.”
      C - “Wow... that’s a bit expensive.”
      P - “Costs a lot to make sandwiches now. We have a guy to whisper to the bread. A guy to put the mayo on. A guy to put the meat on. A guy to put the bottom piece of bread on. A guy to put the top piece of bread on. A guy to cut the tomato once. Another to cut it a second time. Another to cut it a third time.”
      C - “All that seems wholly unnecessary.”
      P - “Here’s your sandwich.”
      C - “Wait. This is just a stack of three slices of ham.”
      P - “Yes. It is technically a sandwich that includes ham.”
      C - “It seems like it’s not finished.”
      P - “Well, sandwiches are expensive to make now.”
      C - “But this is only a sandwich in a definition of the word that allows you to not get sued for lying about what you’re selling.”
      P - “Well, you can buy the top bread for $5, bottom bread for $5, both together for $10.50...”
      C - “That’s not a deal.”
      P - “...a random condiment (chosen from a pool of 730) for $2 a pop, a vegetable of some sort (chosen from a pool with things like safety pins and used hair ties).”
      C - “I don’t want those. Can I just buy the condiments and vegetables I want?”
      P - “Hahahahahaha! I don’t even know how we’d do that!”
      C - “This whole thing seriously sounds like you’re just running a racket.”
      P - “Well, it’s wholly optional. Enjoy your sandwich, dickhead.”
      C - “It has a bunch of bugs on it. Goddamnit.”

      Car dealerships actually do that, though. They'll quote you a low price on a car, but it's for a car without any of the "options;" no A/C, no cruise control, etc. and you end up paying thousands more if you want anything more than just the bare-bones car. They still charge you extra for automatic transmission, FFS. Just a friendly reminder that predatory business practices aren't the sole domain of the video games industry, and we're probably going to need to change things at a societal level before this shit goes away.

      Meanwhile God Hand was a clunky (it has tank controls and other shit like that), poorly marketed and downright average game (that offered a unique experience). No surprise at all it was just a one-off. I mean God Hand came out 1 year after DMC3 so that's the kind of game people were comparing it to.

    Not only will game companies not give things away for free, they also won't just sell you what you want. You can't buy a complete game - you have to buy it three times or read a spreadsheet and put up 3 times as much money for the "digital vanguard super deluxe ultimate edition" (i.e. the complete game). Then if you want certain extras like skins, you can't just buy them - you have to spend real money to gamble for them in loot boxes. This is why I prefer retro games at this point.

      The top two tiers don't add anything to the game, they're physical stuff (a Division statue for the top one, a Rogue statue for the second to top), the Ultimate Edition I think is the last one to add anything gameplay-wise (judging by the uplay description, though uplay only has three editions on sale, not 6) because it's the Gold Edition (Game + Pass) plus a named AK-47 variant (they gave away a weapon like that in the first one too, it was shit, this time they're giving the crafting blueprint too so at least you can remake it at top level) , the extra stash spaces (unless they cut down the stash size from the first one this is a non-issue, though I will note there have been players for the last few years on Division 1 begging Ubisoft for the ability to gain more stash space either via gameplay or purchase... no idea how they managed to filll it, it was huge), two packs with an outfit, an emote and a weapon skin.
      Not really worth the extra $25 really, especially since those packs look like they'll probably be available separately (because they look a lot like some of the Division 1 paid DLC) if you only want some of them.

    • @ItsRetroPlanet

      Retro titles will never go out of style. Simpler time, way more fun games, and they are just so much easier to play. Imagine if a contractor of some sort gave you an offer on a job and they then proceeded to give you 5 different deals on the same job, without even vaguely defining what they are actually offering in each of the deals in question; Their company would obviously go bankrupt in no time at all. However, in the videogame industry that shit is essentially standard practice these days. It's beyond disgusting. Blind consumerism keeps encouraging the greedy publishers to pump out sub-par products without being forced to actually respond to backlash.

      It is those other people who think that they can beat Jim and leech off of his popularity to gain exposure. There are enough shitty indie games and scummy AAA publisher practices that Jim does not need the drama and would not run out of videos without it.

    • @tenjenk
      @tenjenk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I dont think Spag even realizes the irony of repeatedly making posts with a different version of the same condescending sentence about the real world/naivety/growing up and then following up with statements far departed from reality. The general premise of his arguement seems to be "Its this way because i say so and my earlier condescending statements means I have more experience so you have to listen." The problem is even that is shoddily done. His reply to me addressed nothing I actually said (none of his replies to anyone actually do), you could copy paste his replies anywhere, they are that vapid and generic. "let me explain about how the grown up world works" was followed by "this is not ultimately a crticism channel", his follow up has nothing to do with his previous statement!
      He's selecting random statements to put people down, but it comes off as disjointed with his criticisms when he jumps onto his high horse. he couldnt even put that little thought into what he's saying. *shrug* he has no foundation to stand on to begin with, which doesnt matter since his points lacks substance anyhow. The fact remains clear before our eyes. Ruina has only been exposing himself further by bringing Sterling up to his own fanbase, and Sterling is gaining immense amusement from the entire thing because its something he had already moved on from. But he didnt really care for that in the first place as this is all a poorly veiled excuse to take a piss at sterling without even making a concerted effort to even do that, so he's literally pissing into the wind and thinking its minty morning mist as it hits him in the face.
      Sterling has repeatedly recognized and called out shitty game industry behaviours long before others and predicted how events will turn out over and over. The fact he does it in a grandiose, over the top and amusing manner only makes it all the more fun. He brings up valid points I have not seen other critics mention. More than the games themselves, I come to him for his commentary about the industry and the players within. He covers that better than other critics and honestly its fun to watch while he does it.

      This is a common practice in some MMOs and ARPGs. But in the case of Diablo 3 you cant buy the extra Stash space with real money, only with in-game gold that you ha ve to loot, and in path of exile you have to pay for it with real money but the game itself its free to play, so... yeah paying for extra stash space in a 60+ dolar game its still bullshit

    • @MegawackyMax
      @MegawackyMax 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Oh, I totally understand paying with in-game currency to expand your inventory; that can be used as a means of feeling progress. I remember every time I got an expansion briefcase in Resident Evil 4; you really felt that you were getting somewhere. And yes, many RPGs and MMOs can have that... But this is different, I feel. I don't feel there's a sense of achievement in expanding your inventory space... just a spenditure of real money. Sheesh...

    • @zanthor5422
      @zanthor5422 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, it's not uncommon at all for inventory space to be sold for real money, but that's always been almost exclusively done in free-to-play MMOs, as Max said. It's pretty much unfounded to see it in a $60 game, though.

    • @linkno1
      @linkno1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Comparatively, I would say this is worse than Konami's save slot shit, even if only due to Konami's ineptitude.
      You can at least easily get around that save slot crap by just logging in as another user/profile. Definitely just an oversight by Konami there, but it's at least easily circumventable with not much effort. Not to mention there's less investment by the player, it's something you either buy or you don't, you don't put hundreds of hours in to the game and then feel you have to buy a save slot due to that investment...Not that anybody should put hundreds of hours into that piece of shit game anyway, but I digress.
      Storage space though? It's going to look more and more tempting once you've dropped X amount of hours into the game with no other real alternatives on offer. From experience, I've sat grinding money solely for some more storage space in games before and that was with in game currency, so this definitely hits a similar vein as cosmetic items being """optional""". It seems more scummy as it basically preys on the fact that a player might not want to lose something they've earned, therefore they have to pay.

    • @AirahsELL
      @AirahsELL 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Path of Exile does it and they also sell you the ability to have it automatically organized with special inventory tabs.

    I'd like to make it clear to people that the game developers could just increase the storage size before launch. It is not black magic. The game developers could allow you to store 999+ items. Good game developers restrict this amount to add challenge, compromise and encourage selling and trading. Bad game developers restrict this amount to sell storage space for real money.

      It being online-only would mean that they can't make the inventory size infinite, yeah. The larger someone's inventory, the more space it needs to take up in code, and in theory if that space is truly infinite that means someone can crash whatever device is storing that data. Assuming The Division 2 stores people's inventory items on said online servers, which it probably does, that means infinite items is technically unfeasible.
      Of course, that doesn't really excuse selling additional inventory space for real-world money. Selling inventory space for in-game money would make sense, real-world money is unjustifiable outside of "We want to make more $$$".
      Inventory space limits can and do exist for a reason, and in many games it's a perfectly justifiable feature, even for technical reasons like The Division 2, but paywalling it a bad idea. When you paywall features like that you're engendering distrust within your community and will NEVER be able to shake the sentiment that you're scamming them (probably because you are).

I told him that there was a time before he was born where things called "cheat codes" existed that did that and other fun things for free. When he asked how that worked, I told him that games used to be released in their entirety without being butchered to bits. He made a comment along the lines of how he thought that sucked because he doesn't seem able to comprehend that a game can be longer or have a lot of content if it doesn't have dlc. "No, dude," I said, "when you bought a game, you bought the WHOLE game with everything they made for it." He just rolled his eyes and shook his head. He has no clue that most dlc comes from butchering an otherwise complete game - he thinks it's all extra content and a good thing.

      I am so hyped for the story DLC. I never thought it was going to be this good. According to some of the Nintendo Europe people, during Gamescom, they said it would take 30 - 40 hours to play through this game. Which impressed me. The story DLC is looking so good that it could be A LOT better then the base game. New battle system, Community system, slightly better graphics, better U.I, (so far) better Voice Acting (listen to Mythra's screaming), and so on. That is just the story DLC.
      There is the rest of the DLC, where it was slow in the beginning, but once they got around the Challenge mode... It was all worth the wait. I did not expect Shulk, Fiora, or Elma joining as blades, let alone visions and overdrive coming back from their games, PLUS THEIR MUSIC. I am really impress with their DLC even without the story.
      Also, let's not forget it's free DLC. It added in T-elos, an easy difficulty option, and New Game Plus which has its own features in itself.
      I wished that Breath of the Wild DLC was A LOT better or much cheaper. XC2 DLC is running around in circles to BotW DLC in many different ways. Also, I find that there are things in Zelda's DLC that should have been in the main game, like Master mode and that Map feature for example.

It's the wording that makes it bad. If they call if "collector's edition", it implies an edition of the game (the game should be included). It's by far the worst of Poe's stories, and if not even Edgar Allan Poe, the master of Gothic horror and author of timeless classics, could make a good story out of the desire to see his critics dead, what chances does untalented hacks churning out cash grab asset flips have? Having just looked at both, not really. AC Odyssey is selling one mission in the Pantheon, Spartan and Medusa Editions. Everything else in there looks to be statues, maps, and other physical tat (oh and the early access but that's if you really feel like playing it before the proper day 1 patch, heh) Then Ultimate which has all the edition stuff (game, season pass, DD shite, early access), Gold (Game + Pass), DD (Game + DD) and Game (Game). They're leaning way heavier on the statues and shit which I think is Ubisoft's usual approach, remembering when they used to do the collector's boxes without the game in (and let's not mention the massive sold out statue that doesn't come with a copy of the game for Odyssey but is AU$1160... I mean, it looks cool, but holy shit it's over a grand). I can't actually telll what's in the DD pack (the AU website doesn't say, it just has photos. Looks like skins? Possibly a little XP boost and currency? That'd be fitting with the DD pack on Origins...), but all in all none of the editions give anything worse than Red Dead's preorder bonuses.
      I'd say the biggest difference between Odyssey and Red Dead is Red Dead's Ultimate Edition gives you shit for the Online mode. Depending on how good the "Additional weapons", "rank bonuses" and the free mount are, the ultimate edition may give you a leg up against other players. That's not kosher.

      Every single last mother fucking one of us has a backlog that can reach the heavens, so just go knock out one of those games you've never beaten and get whatever new game is out a week later when some shop'll already have it for like 25% off.

    The increased stash size isn't dependable, it's changing a number in code. There's no effort on ubisoft and it's literally removing functionality to try and get you to pay for it.
    These in game purchases, I don't know why anyone buys into them. You just spent $60+ on a game but now you're gonna buy single use, account locked features/functions that should be free? Why? Why would you waste your money on the dumbest crap here.
    Ubisoft continues to be brain dead with customer value and trustworthiness. Games filled with always online DRM and then also, in game purchases. Meaning all your purchases are going away in 4-5 years. But please, please spend 100+ bucks inside the game *hand on the server off button* There's still TIME to enjoy your player choice!

    • @sebastiankrant2738
      @sebastiankrant2738 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simple - grinding. They tend to design the games in ways that make those stashes more usefull and not buying them more painfull. Its how those "free-to-wait" games work: Simply make the purchase so usefull and the lack of purchase so annoying, that it works. Batter the player into spending money. Thats why this works so well - inventory space is an annoyance. While it can be integrated in a game to a good effect by forcing players to plan what to take and also ensure the loot-mechanic doesnt loose its touch by players taking EVERYTHING it is ripe for ensuring a lot of annoyance.

    So the tried and true method of waiting for an all-in-one "Complete Edition" to release with everything included and go on sale for sub~$20 is still the way to go? Cool. Why people buy games at these ludicrous prices on day one (or worse, preorder), just so they can spend even more money on DLC later on, truly boggles my mind. I will never understand that way of thinking.

    Completely uninterested in the AAA game industry anymore. I used to love a LOT of video games. Now I love old games and small indie titles exclusively. Very disappointing what all these companies are pulling.

      You're not alone there in feeling this way. It's one of the main reasons VR has saved this generation from being a total and utter failure for me. People moan about the price of the thing, and that the games are a bit short and tech demo-ish, but those games that I do buy for it in sales cost me very little, and I feel like I'm getting more value out of them than what the so called "AAA" games offer.

    I spot a new scheme in the year 1 pass: with this naming and subtext ("access to the first year of episodes") it is basically a subscription 'service' where the amount of DLC packs is not advertised, leaving the option for the publisher open to move content out of the time frame to reduce the pass' 'value' while keeping your pre-order money.

      I mean, the Ultimate Edition is all the actual game stuff (Game + Season Pass + Cosmetic DLC packs). Those two packs above it? Two different-themed packs of physical tat. And I'm amazed if they're even doing that for PC considering last year they just flat out didn't make physical copies of the PC version of AC Origins. If you wanted the tat you had to get the console version as well as your digital download on PC.

    Not that I really buy into "Live services" as I don't play any of those games. But my main problem with them from an outside perspective is how they are not even a freaking service, as mentioned in the video. They still make those "live services" on a yearly basis that outdates and makes the previous experience inferior. I thought Destiny was going to be a 10 year game? Assassins Creed took a year off and now back to yearly. None of these games are anywhere near a live service, which I would rather compare with Team Fortress 2, WoW, LoL, (and probably Fortnite) etc. Not that I play any of those either, but some are games that has been around for a decade, others are free and have tons of free updates etc. It's a service.

    • @JamieMadrox195

      Actually they said after odyssey there will be another year break.

    • @darthvaderreviews6926
      @darthvaderreviews6926 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. The issues is, publishers want to have their cake and eat it too, so they're simulatenously trying to make long-lived live services, and still sticking to frequent release schedules.
      I think this will resolve itself over time as publishers get more used to the live service model, but that'll probably result in significant and frequent failures (because, after all, a single gamer can generally only keep up with 1-2 true live services at a time) due to market oversaturation, with a couple of standout success stories.

    • @odinsplaygrounds
      @odinsplaygrounds 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JamieMadrox195 I don't see the relevance of how taking 1 year off somehow makes it a live service? So a game only last 2 years at maximum to be replaced by another game, that's a "service"? Why not copy LoL,WoW, TF2, Diablo, etc if they want to create a service? a game only lasting 2 years at maximum isn't a "live service", it's barely following normal recycle of games. Most games are not even replaced that quickly. Most games (Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Zelda, MGS, GTA, etc etc) you have to wait several years between each game. It's only garbage recycled shit that comes out every 1-2 year. Can't believe "only" coming out every 2nd year is somehow a pat on their back.

    • @odinsplaygrounds
      @odinsplaygrounds 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DarthVaderReviews Their idiotic gamble on a live service that players will continue to dump money into, is that a player will just stick with ONE live service like this. One MMO / MMO lite / online game that he/she keeps on playing and supporting. Players only have a limited amount of time. And they're so stupid for believing they can just continue to create these "live services" when people obviously are oversaturated by it already, and only one game per player can be that "one game".

  • @HeartInLight
    @HeartInLight 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I have a theory. Its probably wrong. But AAA games are so lacking in content alot now. It seems like they are pushing graphics to the extreme for what the gpus coming out can do. Nvidia works closely with game developers to maximize graphics. But...its not graphics that make a good game. I got The Division free with my 970, and I couldnt even force myself to play through that empty shell of a game. Its gorgeous. But its like an empty shell of an experience. Are they putting all the development money towards graphics alone now for the wow factor???
    The whole push to make games services. Because so many people play COD or WoW. Is stupid. They are alienating a vast majority of gamers and they are looking to Indie developers for games. And you know what? They do it better too.
    Games are an art form. And passion projects. Not mass produced copy paste bull, not assembly line products you ship out whether they are bolted together or not. And you definitely dont sell assembly line products incomplete, and then make people buy bits of it at a time to complete it.
    Im ok with expansions, not dlc, real expansions. Like how they used to do. But screw dlc. Dying Light did it right. Cd Projekt Red does it right.
    And even worse, when you buy hardware. What games do they giveaway for purchasing a new gpu? A "AAA" shell garbage title that looks beautiful. But is usually absolute shit. Or has 20 dlcs "1 expansion, and 19 outfits in game" Im as enraged as you are Jim. Down with this bullcrap.

    @JimSterling the reason it's complicated and convoluted is quite simple: People need to spend more time thinking about what they want to get what they actually want. At the point where people go from "So I might buy the game" to "But IF i buy the game, which edition should I buy" is the point where the sale is basically closed, because the part before the comma will be forgotten over the time spent deciding.
